First, knowing kanji isn't really necessary to play VNs with the translation aggregator/ITH combo (using jparser only) or the VNR's furigana function.  These are solely for getting used to the language, separately from the kanji.  To be frank, learning kanji takes a lot longer than learning how to read Japanese this way, and unless you want to wait two or three years before you start, I don't suggest using kanji-knowledge as a marker for when to start playing VNs in Japanese.

These levels assume a basic background in Japanese grammar, syntax, and common vocab (particles, tenses, sentence structure, negative form, te-form, ta-form, etc. as well as words in common use in everyday conversation).  Understand, if you can't understand a raw anime episode (at least to a reasonable degree) you shouldn't even make the attempt.  While the written language has the advantage of a lack of the ambiguity lent to language by the intervention of a voice, it also has the disadvantage of being more complex than what is normally spoken in most cases.

Furigana converters like jparser and VNR's furigana converter basically allow you to circumvent the need for kanji-knowledge by putting romaji or kana atop the kanji to make them comprehensible to the kanji-illiterate.  If you haven't mastered ALL of the radicals (with an understanding of WHY they effect the kanji they are attached to the way they do), as well as all of the kanji seen in everyday use, you shouldn't even make the attempt to play without these tools.

Sorry, I ranted.  However, too much importance is placed on learning kanji, when it isn't really necessary to learn it before jumping into VNs.  Rather, you should understand their function.  Kanji function similar to the way parts of our words such as -ology (biology, astrology, etc using it as an obvious example) function, in that they lend specific meaning to widely-used syllables, which can lend the reader a richer understanding of certain words... if they already know those words, can recognize them in the context of the sentence, situation, and/or conversation.  Symbolic writing's advantage over and disadvantage against phonetic writing is summed up right there.  More meaning can be more easily conveyed in the written language, and thus understanding of the spoken language is weakened (thus too much kanji too early can lead to poor or flawed understanding of Japanese as a whole).

Really, it is best to balance them out, but if you want to read VNs... learning the spoken language then using those tools is the fastest, most effective way to do so.  I advocate a spoken-language-leaning approach because it results in better understanding at the endpoint, but others prefer to enter from kanji because it provides a seemingly easier (if you are really good at memorization) route to simply stealing the gist of what is being written by just extracting the kanji and staring at them until you THINK they make sense.  This is also why Japanese>Chinese>English translations are just... terrible in most cases (speaking from experience as a fansubber/fantl).  The illusion of understanding without any grasp of the subtleties is usually all that kanji without a greater understanding of the language gives you.

Edit:  Sorry, I've had several people I know jump into VNs with kanji knowledge but a weak understanding of grammar... and the results to their understanding of what went on were hideous.  I couldn't believe some of the results (see the English reviews on the web of Devils Devel Concept, for instance... they don't even resemble the actual game).  Seeing the light bulb go on above their heads when I explained the meaning of a key line was gratifying for me... but also disturbing.  It wasn't so much about the generalized (very generalized) meaning... it was that they missed most of the key details of what was going on, details that frequently defined everything that happened after that, even though they didn't seem important at the time.

Believe it or not, the forums are not the only part of Fuwanovel. This may surprise some of you, but there are plenty of us that do work for Fuwanovel, often without any help from the "Fuwa Staff". I feel that these people are just as much staff for the site as the Forum mods, and I would like to take a moment to recognize them.

For starters, Zakamutt has almost single handily been carrying the Fuwa Gazette for a while now. He puts in a lot of effort to his Status posts and recruitment posts, aznd has been looking for a team fruitlessly for a while now. Not only does he work as the head of the blog, he also does a ton of the lifting on the official Fuwanovel twitter account, typically posting news at the same moment I do. He also just so happens to be the newest member of the Facebook team and has only screwed up one post to date.

Next up is another blog staff member. JuicyYuuji just started today, but nothing caught fire and no deaths were reported. Indications are he will do just fine.

Down is considered one of the Fuwa Staff thanks to his moderation of the forums. He also does some off-forum work in the form of FuwaReviews and assisting in the Fuwanovel twitter account. I made him read School Days HQ, and he absolutely hated it. Despite that, he is moving on to the next review, like a trooper. A true survivor if I've ever seen one.

Ryechu reviews nukige and forced me to read ToS agreements to see if we could even post the reviews. Turns out we can. Fuck you censorship. He doesn't just review nukige for FuwaReviews though. He also took on Cho Dengeki Stryker and Magical Witch Diary or something. He also likes Raichu.

No man insults Nohman, the third and final reviewer for the FuwaReviews team. He turns out some really good stuff and obeys my every command. You may also know him as Bill Murray, but I know his true name for those curious.

Nayleen is next up here. Fuck if I know what he does, but sometimes he breaks things, other times he fixes them. Just depends how much he's been drinking. He does some of the coding for Fuwanovel, so if anything seems broken, you know who to blame.

All hail the king of forum spam, Nosebleed. When he isn't posting 100 times a day on the forums, he makes Facebook posts for the page. Usually, he has to go in and answers questions that I reply super sarcastically to. We still await the day when Nico Nico Nii shows itself on the FB page. It will happen.

Ryouuuuu/Kyouuuuu might not be able to decide on what his name is, but thats alright. We forgive him anyway. Our resident Facebook Key specialist, if there is Key news about, he is on the case. 99% of my skype messages from him are usually along the lines of "Angel Beats hyyyppeeee!!!!!"

Beato is listed as a forum mod, but those pretty game download pages, thats her work. She is the one to usually get those pages up and running. We don't know much of her true nature, but as a Swede, I can only assume she controls Tay like a puppet.

dale is the reason you can fap to a high amount of seeds when downloading games. As the owner of the seedbox we use, nothing gets seeded without his permission. A warning to all lolicons.

For your podcast needs, look no farther than OriginalRen. Even if the episode count is out of order, rest assured you'll find plenty of interesting things in the episodes. Inner workings of the Fuwa staff, interviews with translators, and discussions with regular members all appear at one point or another.

There you have it. Most of, if not all of the Fuwanovel Staff. These guys work off the forums on the real parts of Fuwanovel. Please give these people some thanks and support for what they do off the forums as I feel they are often overlooked on Fuwanovel.

If I forgot anyone else, please let me know. As much as I try to keep up with the staff, sometimes someone will slip through the cracks, especially with all the new changes.

Merry Christmas, everyone. Hope you're all enjoying your holidays.
Forgive my horrible timing, I was busy wasting my time in nord ruins of Skyrim these days.

I've already wrote how did I get to know about visual novels in my small introduction on my profile page, but I don't mind saying it again here - I discovered G-Senjou no Maou on a hentai-streaming site. I've been using torrents for downloading for quite some time before that, so I searched for torrent trackers that might be seeding it and accidentally stumbled upon Fuwanovel. After finishing Haru's route I downloaded Grisaia no Kajitsu and If My Heart Had Wings afterwards. At that time I've become interested in the forum of Fuwa, and I registered my first account (it says "retired" now).

My first impression was a little odd, to say the least. I've been an active member on an anime forum before coming here, but I haven't seen as many people having waifus and preferring 2D world to 3D as here. I enjoy both of them myself, but I still prefer 3D to 2D. I grew accustomed pretty quickly, made a couple of friends. "Kinda" tried to contribute to this awesome community of yours, but that good will didn't last for long. Partly because of my own laziness and partly because of the lack of any attractive things to contribute to.

Now, "Pretty Much Entire Life History" part is coming up. Are you really interested?

I'm 17 years old. Born in Russia, living in Italy with my mother and her partner. No brothers or sisters. My father can as well be dead. How the heck did I end up here? A few months after I was born my father took my mother and me to our parents to Ukraine. Upon arriving there he told us that he thinks he's not ready to have a family yet. Living us to our parents, he returned back to Moscow. My mother, after recovering after the stress, received an offer to go working in Italy. She accepted it, and I was left with my grandparents. A few years after she got there, she found a man who she fell in love with. They started living together and at that time she started to prepare the documents for me to transfer here. She spent more than 6 years doing it, and at the time everything was ready I was 12 years old. Upon arriving here the family of her husband started to create all sorts of troubles to me and my mother. We've never been able to discover the true reason behind it, but the most plausible possibility is that once her husband discovered that his children he had with his previous wife were being jealous of my mother and me he decided to get rid of us. Under the pretence of finding a job as a manager of a restaurant to my mother, he moved us with our belongings to a new place, where we spent 2 years until we had to close because we weren't able to pay rent nor for the restaurant, nor for the place we were living in anymore. At that time my mother got in touch with a man we're currently living with. He invited us to stay with him, and so we're living together for a third year already.

Happy end? Not really. The man has tons of his own problems to solve, so he can't fully dedicate his attention to us. Can't say he's any eager about it either. To heat the house we have to use electric heaters because there's no heating in the place we're living. We can't keep constantly turned on either because the electric bill grows to the sky. We do have a fireplace, which fills the apartment with smoke whenever you try to start a fire in it. Apparently the chimney is too short for the smoke to escape efficiently. Perhaps I should add that there are no jobs to be found here. But we're living near the sea, so I suppose it's all worth it. Too bad it adds enormous amount of humidity to the apartment, though.

Unlike Tiago, I'm a natural optimist. Everything has a positive side to it, you just have to see it. I like pondering about philosophical matters (that's a little hobby of mine). Aside from that - I love music, especially listening to it. Currently learning Japanese, but who cares.

Pretty Much Entire Life History - check. Ah. Holiday message, right.

Happy holidays! I hope you'll spend them having as much fun as you want, doing what you want when you want where you want. Thanks again for such an awesome community, everyone. Please continue being awesome.

    Fellow Fuwans!

It is with great pleasure that I am finally able to make this post and announce the complete migration of all my "let's play" videos to Google Drive. For those of you who aren't aware of what this entails, feel free to read on and follow any of the links posted in this thread. All the current games I have streamed/recorded or am currently streaming/recording are located here, complete with descriptions and any additional details.

For those of you who don't know much about me, my name is OriginalRen, a visual novel enthusiast who enjoys streaming and recording visual novel "let's plays" for the community. Some of the games I play are in their original Japanese text, while others are accompanied with an English patch. Often times I have a friend joining me for the fun, where I will read the game and we comment on the style and overall plot of the visual novel. Either way, I hope that I spark your interest in visual novels and the many games the community and fan translators have to offer, and I hope these videos grab your attention and you take the time to read these novels and many more in your own time. While I made this post to sound like the streaming/recording will be complete once these 6 games are finished, that is not the case. I plan to stream more games when the time comes and continue helping translation groups promote their games when able; all future "let's play" videos will be posted on my Google Drive. That being said, I am always willing to try new things and play new games, so let me know!

With that, feel free to follow any of the links below for more information, and I hope you continue to support me, my YouTube channel, and the community by playing visual novels. Thanks again!

    Description:
Halfway through the 21st century, we are surely approaching something called the “network golden age”.
The Multi-purpose communication card “Orca” provides a phone network (that goes without saying), an overwhelming number of apps to use allowing one to shop from their home telephone, and even a way to receive school lessons.
Even IDs and the health insurance cards are all incorporated into the Orca card.
It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that one’s entire life is influenced by this one small card.
I, Hayami Taiyou, lives in a city that supports cutting-edge Orca cards, also a student of Makoto Advanced Academy (something like this city has the best ones)
Blessed with friends, and although i have no large problems occur in my daily life……
A bug occurred in some students’ Orca card after a sudden automatic update was applied.
An unusual app called “Cocoro Function” was installed.
And it seems I was one of them, and apparently due to this app, my inner thoughts are revealed to the people around me.

    “Chairman! Bad News!”
“What’s wrong? (But, I would never get tired of groping your bouncing boobs)”
    “Chairman! You pervert!”

You can’t delete the app, but on the other hand you couldn’t live without Orca either.
After that, it was impossible to hide my erotic delusions.
Furthermore, apparently there are other apps at school that have special features that are also causing problems.
The troubles in school are gradually building up.
I had to do something, and with that in mind, I gathered a group of people also bothered by this mysterious app,
and started up the Cocoro Function Countermeasure Committee (CFC), in order to try to solve the problem.
Can everyone else and I retain our peaceful school life!?!

There's also a prestigious all-female school nearby; this being the case, several students/teachers live in the same neighborhood as the hero's childhood friend; thus the rarely seen male presence begins a bit of an uproar as awkward, hormone-charged interactions begin.

    It was a buried memory.
    It was an eternal oath.
It was a wish from the heart.
It was a regret kept for eternity.

    And a childhood promise—

Yuuto was raised in an orphanage in England. He was taken to Japan after being adopted by Yoshiomi Takakura, an executive of his business.

Yuuto, who couldn’t speak Japanese, was supported by his twin sister-in-laws, the bright and shy Anzu, and the cool and reliable Anri, along with the innocent and gentle Tsubame, and the showy and devious Izumi.

The young boys and girls were unaware of love. They laughed and they cried, nurturing irreplaceable bonds.

    And 10 years later—

The local scenery had changed so much, and so did Yuuto and the others.

–But there are also things that remained the same.

“Do you remember… the promise we made that day?”

Yuuto's other childhood friends, Hekiru and Hikaru, moved overseas ten years ago.
They are together with Yuuto again, and their memories from ten years ago return with them.

Clover Day's starts during those rich and fulfilling days.

    Halloo

So, after a number of minutes troubleshooting this and scouring the Internet, I have arrived at a semi-solid solution for the Muv Luv crashing problems faced when running the game on a Windows 8 platform.

I'm posting this year at the risk of repeating the information elsewhere because I nearly tore my hair out trying to find it.

The crash purportedly occurs in two places:

     - on Sumika's date following the food contest
     - on Sumika's route at the ending credits

Obviously, this poses a game-breaking obstacle to unlocking Unlimited.

Here are the steps I took to get the game working on multiple machines:

    0. Prepare your save just before the crash.

    1. Navigate to the Muv Luv Plugins folder.
    ex. C:\age\マブラヴ11\Plugins

    2. Move the mlhookv2.rpo file (cut, no copying) to another location; say, the Desktop.

    3. Return to the C:\age\マブラヴ11\ directory and rightclick on the マブラヴ11.exe application, then navigate to the Compatibility tab.

    4. Set the following options:
     - Run in Compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3
     - Disable display scaling on high DPI settings
     - Reduced color mode, and set to 16-bit (65536 color)

    5. Run the game - it will be in Japanese now. Fret not. Select the second option from the top, and load your save.

    6. You might crash occasionially. This is somewhat expected. Fight on until you navigate to the scene when Takeru, Sumika, and the snot-nosed kid watch the power rangers show at the amusement park.

    7. You should be able to navigate successfully past the part where the camera pans upwards to see the fighters standing on the sign. YOU MAY HAVE TO DO THE FOLLOWING:
     - set it to auto
     - CTRL-skip
     - simply click

    8. STOP advancing the story once the power rangers appear and save the game.

    9. Replace the mlhookv2.rpo back in the Plugins folder.

    10. Restart the game (returned to English) and load your latest save.

    11. Voila! You may proceed.

It is very reasonable to say that this fix will also prevent the game from crashing as Sumika's credits roll, allowing the game to save the completion data.

If anyone has problems with this or is also successful, post a reply. I'm curious to see if anyone still can't get past the scene using this ugly trick.

Oh hello there, my name is Tyrael and after lurking on this site for a while I recently decided to become a member of this wonderful community. Therefore I thought it'd be a good idea to introduce myself here . Unfortunately it took me a while before I was able to post this topic since I had to fight the 'stuck in validation' bug first .

    About me:
I have been into anime for about a year now but I never really thought about reading a visual novel until the moment I started watching a fantastic show called The World God Only Knows which has a MC who is pretty much addicted to them (even though he only seems to play galge). This made me interested in the topic and so I started browsing the web a bit, searching for english translations of acclaimed VN's which would inevitably lead me to Fuwanovel. I have only been reading VN's for about a month now so I know that I have a lot to catch up to, in addition to me not really knowing which VN's are actually worth reading and such. But I'm convinced you guys will be a great help when it comes to that. In any case, I look forward to interacting with you all on a regular basis.

Oh and in case you were wondering where my name is from: http://diablo.wikia.com/wiki/Tyrael

PS: My favourite VN at the moment is Clannad, because it was the first VN I ever read and because I hold the anime very dear as well. My apologies if you were expecting something less 'basic', hehe. Also, please excuse me for any spelling or grammar errors you might encounter, English is only my third language ^^ (Dutch and French being the first two ).

Hello all . I have just released my last visual novel for the year, Without Within. Since the game is complete, I figured it is better to put it here than Oncoming Projects. Hopefully that is okay!

Vinty has been getting nowhere with her calligraphy. Her confidence has sunk to an all time low.
As life pressures her toward giving up, will she forget why she pursued this craft in the first place?

The game is available free as my way of saying thanks for supporting me this year. I knew this would be done near Christmas so I hope it can be seen as a little gift from me . The game was inspired by a reddit thread I stumbled upon a few months back.

The game is on greenlight at the moment, so if you could spare a moment for me, that would be really cool :

I also have a campaign for rewards like postcards, trading cards, physical copies etc:

Some of the stuff you can get:

    Some screenshots from the game:

Thank you everyone! Hope you can spare a moment to check out the game sometime, and most important, happy holidays .

This is a list of good games to begin your journey into playing VNs in Japanese.  Inevitably, most of these games will be moege, charage, or nakige.  There is little to be done about this, as chuuni, sci-fi, and fantasy-action VNs have linguistic barriers that will be too much for someone still struggling with reading conversational Japanese.  In particular, the biggest barrier for someone who is used to dealing with Japanese that is 'spoken', rather than 'written' is the existence of literary Japanese.  The turns of phrase, different wording, etc. that an inexperienced reader might run into can either be seen as a learning experience or as pure confusion, depending on your level and state of mind.  As such, I am only putting down games that are readable for someone who understands spoken Japanese but is weaker in literary Japanese.  I will also put a 'second level' for those who are interested in challenging themselves a little but not too much.  This one will be for those who are willing to see if they can handle the easier action scenes, more difficult event descriptions, and the like.

    First Level:

    Maji Suki Marginal Skip
    Suzunone Seven
    Kamikaze Explorer
Tsuisou no Augment (this game is hilarious, and it is not a moege.  I recommend this to people who liked the atmosphere of Yume Miru Kusuri)
Akabanzu - Real na Sekai de Boku ga Kimi ni Dekiru Koto (this game has only minor scientific terms and jargon, mostly related to AI and MMO's.  Since it is distinctly possible you ran into these terms just watching anime, I went ahead and put this up.)
Chuning Lover (this game is just generally rofl)
Ichiban Janakya Dame Desu Ka (one of the few almost-pure comedy in my personal lineup)
    Otomimi Infinity
Sakura Iro Quartet (this and the game above are for mimikko fetishists)
Ryuusei Kiseki (sci-fi moege, fairly easy.  Hardest parts are when the protag begins preaching about his hobby)
    Shiawase Kazoku-bu
Sukimazakura to Uso no Machi (surrealist fantasy moege... mildly funny, interesting in general)
Toppara - Zashikiwarashi no Hanashi (use this as your crash course in youkai)
    12/30/2014 edit
    Love Revenge
Real Imouto ga Iru Ooizumi-kun no Baai
    08/15/2016 Edit
    Sakigake Generation
    Minamijuujisei Renka
    Primal Hearts
    Primal Hearts 2
    World Election
    Koko Kara Natsu no Innocence

    Second Level:
Irotoridori no Sekai (yeah, it is being translated, but it isn't done yet)
Konata yori Kanata Made (relatively low-difficulty action/event scenes, as well as being an excellent entry point into the utsuge genre)
Tiny Dungeon series (relatively normal conversational and event scenes, and the actions scenes are relatively low-difficulty, if somewhat fast-paced)
Draculius (similar to above in the action)
Haruka ni Aogi, Uruwashi no (this game is probably one of the top three non-action/sci-fi/fantasy games I've played and it is harder than the games on the first level... but in exchange it is also a lot better, lol)
Hyper→Highspeed→Genius (relatively high difficulty to first level, but it is easier than the games I'd prefer to introduce people to, lol)
Koisuru Otome to Shugo no Tate - The Code Name is "Shield 9" (fanboys of fantranslations know this as one of the many dead projects)
    Ore no Tsure wa Hitodenashi
Kaminoyu (this one and the one above are your source for non-human love in this stage, lol)
Otome ga Tsumugu, Koi no Canvas (higher difficulty than first level primarily due to the art terms)
Aete Mushisuru, Kimi to no Mirai
Akatsuki no Goei (first one only, later ones are too hard for Second Level)
Re: birth Colony Lost Azurite (this, Tiny Dungeon, and Draculius are probably the hardest games on this list)
Fake Azure Arcology (direct link to the game above, and ditto)
Kimi to Boku to Eden no Ringo
Koiiro Soramoyou (famous for certain VN fanboys)
Kimi to Boku to no Kishi no HIbi (recent release, fairly easy, good protag)
Lunaris Filia (a vampire charage, for those who want some of that)
Naka no Hito nado Inai!! Tokyo Hero Project
    Dracu-riot
    Sakura Tale
Tojita Sekai no Tori Colony (this game is pretty hilarious, especially if you insist on seeing all of the loop ends before getting to the true end)
Tsuki ni Yorisou, Otome no Sahou (similar to Koi no Canvas, in that the terms that will give you the most trouble are the technical ones - this time for sewing and clothing design)
    12/30/2014 edit
Zannen na Oretachi no Seishun Jijou
    Kimi no Tonari de Koishiteiru
Sekai wo Sukuu Dake no Kantan na Shigoto
Nanairo Reincarnation (borderline within this if you are familiar with the base concepts of youkai and ghosts as understood by the Japanese)
    Sakigake Generation

Edit:  This will be the last in my series of lists.  I will edit them with additions occasionally, but I won't be making any new ones.  Have fun yall.
