While i certainly haven't played that many VNs I can see where you're coming from. However, there have been numerous titles that gave me stuff to think about and question (Clannad, Rewrite, Little Busters (yes, I'm a dirty Key fanboy), Grisaia, Stein's;Gate, IroSeka, KonoSora, ...) and numerous titles that were just fun to play all around without being philosophical at all (most light-hearted H-games out there).
I rly like VNs and will always look for something new to read if it interests me. Whether the genre has changed or corrupted me I'll leave to you, but I don't regret having started to read VNs.

Oh, I'm a dirty Key fandboy as well and don't worry, your corruption has only just begun.

Nice. :vanilla: I myself only reached 50 finished titles last month, and it took me 5 years and 8 months to get to this point, so, I guess, I'm going with more or less the same speed? Though if you count everything that I didn't finish, this number will probably rise quite significantly.

One day you will reach my level, only to find that I've already moved the goalposts several times over.

Just so you know, the Sakura Taisen games have pretty similar storytelling to Galaxy Angel (and there are read-along translations out there if you don't know japanese).

Sounds interesting and it seems like they are going to release a new game soon.

Congrats on the threshold! ^^ I wonder if I'll be able to keep reading VNs regularly for so many years. I'm at 200 after years and a half, by the virtue of going through SO MANY SHITTY SHORT EVNS, but this pace might be less than sustainable in the long run. :chaika:

So, as for questions: are there VNs where you actually did enjoy the h-scenes? :sachi:

Of course, the only place that you really belong is neck deep in the muck and mire of your own transgressions. I've only played around seven that I would consider to be total dogshit.

Of H scenes that I enjoyed the only ones I can really think of is a few in Kara No Shoujo oddly enough, oh and I truly loved the scene in Sekien no Inganock because it was actually romantic.

Yeah, if you want to truly complete everything (and in particular, if you want to get the joke ending) you have to do literally everything... but I dunno how feasible that even is on your own. I basically did what you said you're doing, and I still missed a bunch of things. You've got two reasonable options:

    • use an online guide, which will suck all the joy out of it
    • accept that you don't need to see everything and that the game tells a whole and complete story without needing to see the joke ending (this is what I did)

And I suppose a third option where you first do the second bullet point, and then do the first bullet point because you feel you really need to see the joke ending.

There is a forth option and it is to download a 100% save after they have finished the vn and get it that way. That's what I did since there was no way in hell I would jump all those exhausting hoops.

So, after around 10 years off on and off playing I finally managed to clear the 100 VN threshold and I can honestly say that I'm shocked that I've kept up with it for this long. I started playing around 2009 after blindly stumbling upon the genre whilst on my frenzied quest to find more Galaxy Angel content. What really drew me in was the uniqueness of the medium and the potential for really great storytelling. I was liked how romance was really emphasized which was not the case for most of the video games that I've played.(Except for the Bioware fare which to be honest was not always that substantial) It was like I had found a new frontier and I decided I would plunder it for anything I deemed of worth. I've played a lot of lot of truly great vns that inspired and influenced me and some pretty shit ones that I wished I could scrub my brain of all knowledge of. Thanks to my relatively discerning taste that hasn't been that many, usually it was anytime I decided to play an H game. I'd like to say that I've kind of learned my lesson but we all know that's not the case. Now, if you'd excuse me, I need to find another vn to play.

Anyway, I guess this is the part where you ask me a question, or crow about how you have already played 100 vns and you only started last year, or some other dumb shit.

  4. I'm fine with the length of a route so long as it feels natural and not overtly padded

If it's a compact vn but the character's route still feels substantial than I'm fine with it.

All I ask for is a happy medium

Sex scenes I don't give a shit about unless they are integral to the story and actually feel romantic (Which is about three vns)

  5. Finished playing Sound Of The Drop and I have to say that I quite liked it though I wasn't blown away by it. A lot of the horror seemed a bit goofy and the ending wasn't mesmerizing. What I think is remarkable is that they were able to improve so much with Fatal 12.

Also this marks 100 vns I've managed to play so far it's kind of hard to believe that I took this long to get there(Though I was on a long sabbatical from the genre.)

  6. Finished all the routes I could stand in Brass Restoration: the only ones left was the childhood friend character and a girl who referred to herself in the third person..so fuck that noise!

It was decent enough for an indie vn made in 2004, the writing could be quite good at times, surprisingly enough.

I also finished playing Void and I thought it was quite good even though it had one of the worst editing jobs I've ever seen(They claimed to have fixed it but since I didn't want to pay for that gamble, the world may never know)

Now I'm going to play Sound of Drop: Fall Into Poison, and I hate that it's not called Sound of the Drop since it's proper grammar and just sounds better.

On the topic of Galaxy angel. I've held that off because galaxy angel 2 and it's sequels haven't been translated yet. Are they relevant? Does the story for the cast you get to know in the first series come to a close? I'd be pretty annoyed if i read 3 vn's and got a cliffhanger because the rest has yet to be translated.

No, Galaxy Angel 2 is a completely different story with all new characters and is only somewhat loosely connected with the first three. Eternal Lovers wraps up everything storywise.

  8. I don't think you can really play a vn for long and not play a eroge, you can twist and squirm all you want but you will eventually play one. There are quite a few that are all ages and have no sex scenes in it like the best vn of all time(I'm going to keep plugging GA until someone kills me) but they are a finite amount. Eventually you will run out of the quality ones, plus, some of the best vns are eroge's. I'm no fan of the sex scenes in them and I think almost all of them are badly written and that virgins are lame and boring. Nukiges I hardly ever play and every time I do play one I inevitably end up regretting my decision.

Thanks Plk_Lesiak. That gives me some hope since I'm making some yuri vn's lol (Thank fully one not based in high school lol). But anyway, I understand what you mean. I know plot-centered visual novels aren't super popular, but I hope they grow a bit more. I'm not against adult content either, but it can be annoying when people tell a creator to put it in when they don't want to. That's when I get kind of put off.

And yeah, they didn't start it. But for a while, Sakura games were popular for the fan service and cheap prices. Many players didn't want to spend big bucks on the better titles, so instead they went to titles like the Sakura game and the formula became even more popular. But Neko Para is a big player in why we see so many of these games. Granted, I don't think all visual novels need to be plot heavy and can be like Neko Para. My problem is when they do come out, seems people don't take notice or complain about it not having enough fan service.

Well, I can't really blame you. I may feel the same way. I've read some of the more popular JVN visual novels and I can tell you many of them have annoyed me at times by the horrible tropes used. Like best guy friend. That trope irritates me even in EVN's. As for copying trope, it's not necessarily a bad thing as long as it's handled well. However the porn part is a big problem. I don't think I've read a vn yet with decent sex scenes. It's more just eye candy. And yeah, the ideas the JVN market put out seem to always be the same. I agree games that are more diverse or original should also gain some spotlight. Sadly it's hard for them. Even now on KS, there's a really unique game about man eating monsters and humans having to coexsist together. Sadly, I don't think it'll make. Granted though, they may not be advertising it well.

All I saw was non high school yuri and got excited. What are you planning on making?

As to the question I would say that it is probably gotten popular of late, it certainly has grown considerably more from way back when I had just joined the scene. I think more people at least know about there existence. I worry though that many are turned off by the utter shit and rubbish vns that seem to fester on steam. I suppose that is just the way of the world.

  10. Yeah, thanks to the fan translators from back in the day that helped me discover this pretty cool sub genre of entertainment. I probably wouldn't have found it if I hadn't sought out the translation of Galaxy Angel. So yeah I hope you guys can actually finish all those projects that you started so that I can either play them or leave them languishing in my to play folder till the end of time.

  11. Finished yet another route in Tokyo Babel, I feel like this has been an eternity but I am determined to see it through to the end

In this adventure our slab of a protag fought against an action figure I had in the 90s. Oh well at least it is mindlessly entertaining, Jesus though this route took so long to finally end. Still, Sorami was pretty fun and the romance seemed like it was actually present this time. (I still wish she had been the protag)

Oh well, on to the last route with the best girl

    https://i.postimg.cc/s2yv8GV6/Capturesfsdfdsfdsss.png

We soon be gurl, we soon be.

  12. My favorite ones that I've played this year are

    1. Flowers Vol.2

It was a sequel that managed to be better than it's predecessor in every way, thanks in part than having one of the best and most interesting protags I've seen.

I really felt a deep connection with Erika and she stole the show, just like I thought she would. I should probably write a review for it just so I can gush on it some more.

    2. Fatal 12

It is pretty rare that a vn comes along that really surprises me and Fatal 12 really accomplished that and it did so consistently. I loved how varied and intriguing the characters were, I loved how wonderful the protag was. I also just really loved the story.

    3. Sekien no Inganock -What a Beautiful People-

Few visual novels try and even attempt to do any world building at all. It's just one forsaken high school after another until the end of time. Inganock pulls this off splendidly and that's it's greatest strength. It also has a splendid cast including Atti, who's just the best.

    4. Aioshiro

Despite having some drawbacks, which includes a few extremely long discussions about food and long tirades about Japanese folklore, it still manages to be very enjoyable thanks in part to it's unique and varied cast and it's great protagonist. Shouko is one of the best I've seen and she is steadfast and strong without being overpowered.

    5. Shadows of Pygmalion

I really enjoyed this vn thanks to the intriguing plot and solid characters. I especially liked the last route and how strong it turned out to be. The protag was also really enjoyable and I enjoyed the explanation behind her character. More proof that yuri's produce some of the best protags around.
