No, the point is that they can't tell the difference.
Without us there to tell them, "hey, you're getting a crappy translation, you should be asking for better," there's no way for them to care.
So what if the result is a unreadable mess? To them that may as well be a problem with the editing/proofreading, not a problem with translation.

Depending on how you look at things, you may perceive them as different things.
I, for one, thought Fal's route was really romantic in its own way. Fal herself is simply a very unique kind of person, that isn't predisposed for normal love.

Fal is unique, very divisive, and often not well liked. I think her route is awesome, but that's almost certainly a minority opinion. Lise is simply boring, IMO, and Torta's route is... well, you'll see. At any rate, you shouldn't write off Symphonic Rain until you've finished all three of those heroines' routes: strangely enough, none of them is a good indication of what the game is really like.

I mean, you do hear things like "You're bats/batty" to mean someone's crazy, etc, but....
(bats/batty comes from "bats in the belfry", which in itself is a phrase I've never heard of)
I don't think any average English speaker is going to get what bat is supposed to mean here lol.
    Edit:
I think the last time I remember hearing bat used in this context is by the Joker, when he says something along the lines of "You're making me batty" to, guess who? Batman.

It's explained in the first instance the phrase is used, and I'm pretty sure the meaning is just simply the animal, not slang for "idiot".
So yeah, you would have to not read the lines to misunderstand why she's calling him that.

In which cases is it unnecessary? It's just a little hard to take your criticisms seriously when all you say is "they added words." "Adding words" is an integral part of the translation process. Sometimes removing them, too! I'd be interested to see a more nuanced criticism of the translation.

What the hell do you want these people to do?? It should be obvious that these people do not speak fluent English, so why in god's name do you expect them to somehow know what's better for a translation than the actual people working on it?
And to answer your question, yes the companies do actually look over the translations, and I know for a fact that Palette made suggestions on it.

Nobody from Sekai touched the translation. Have you considered that maybe, the translator himself just realized how terrible of a choice that is?

Why can I only give a post one like. If I ever write something in English about beef stew and someone translates it to Japanese, I hope they'd do me the common courtesy of translating my beef stew as "nikujaga" instead of writing "beef stew" in katakana.
Regarding numerals, AP and Chicago (and probably the others) agree that numbers ten and under should almost always be written out, and certainly in this case. If you're making mistakes like that in publicly-released materials, you probably need a style guide, so here's a free starter kit, a lightweight, VN-centric style guide: https://github.com/FredTheBarber/EditingPublic/blob/master/style guide.md

    And we're back.

Okay, time for some real talk.

I am currently very busy IRL. Something has come up that is keeping me rather occupied, and that will be the case for all of August. I'll spare you the details of what this is, but it's very important to me, and takes priority over my hobbies.

Anyways, because of this, I can't get all that much TL work done on this project during this time. And on top of that, I'm going to Japan in September to study abroad, and will be there for half a year. I am not sure how my internet situation will be over there, and I also don't know how much free time I'll have. So, this obviously means, TL progress will start to slow down. A lot.

Now, this does not mean I'm going to abandon this project. I still plan on finishing this, though as you can probably tell, I can't meet a 2017 deadline, since I'll have my hands full for the next 6 months.

For the moment, my plan is this:

I will do my absolute best to get the Minato route fully TLed before I leave for Japan. Or I will at the very least get it finished after a bit of time in Japan. I only have 2700 lines remaining on that, so it won't require all that much time. I will definitely aim for a 2017 release for Minato's route, at the very least.

After that though, I might have to put off the rest of the routes for a while. If I do happen to have a lot of free time in Japan, I'll definitely start TLing when I'm there. But, my studies comes first, so if I find myself with very little free time, I can't exactly throw away my degree just to get this TL done a little faster.

Which means, worst case scenario, Minato's route comes out, and I'll have to put the project on hiatus until Febuary of 2018, when I get back to Norway again.

I don't know what I'll be thinking 6 months from now, but at the moment, I definitely want to finish this project, even if it takes a long time.
I'll keep you updated on how the TL is going throughout of August, and will make one final update before I leave for Japan. (That update will hopefully be me hitting the 100% mark on Minato's route, but I can't make any promises.)
Thanks for sticking with me folks, see you in the next update.

Of course I won't stop anyone else from attempting to TL this, but just wanted to let you know that we are still working on a translation for this game.

I haven't actually finished a VN since Chrono Clock, and I chose not to review that in the end because of the ongoing negotiations I was party to with its publisher. Before that, last finished Himawari in January. And then Supipara last August. Ouch.
I don't have as much time as I used to for frivolously playing VNs, true, but to be honest, I also don't have quite as much drive as I used to. I still love VNs and enjoy reading them, but working on VN translation makes me want to do other shit after I mentally exhaust myself for the day.
I'm halfway through Dies Irae and I plan on finishing that eventually. Hopefully sometime this month, but maybe next month instead. I'll review it once I'm done. After that, who knows. I don't want to quit reviewing but if I'm not finishing any new releases then I'll never have anything to review. Maybe once I finish Dracu-Riot I'll binge on a few games.

From my perspective as one of the current reviewers, and speaking only for myself, not for FuwaReviews at large or Palas in particular as the head, I see a combination of factors influencing the rate at which we publish reviews (which, btw, I don't think is all that slow; we've maybe had some outlier slow months recently with only one review a month, but these things are going to be cyclical):
Reading a VN simply takes time, and we're all busy individuals doing various things. Reading a VN to review it vs. reading it for pleasure is actually a surprisingly different experience. Reading something with the intent to review it actually puts a fair bit of mental burden on me, vs. simply reading it normally, for better and worse: I spend time stepping back and assessing how I'm feeling about certain things, taking notes, constantly considering collecting screenshots, etc. All told, it's actually a fair bit less entertaining to read this way. That said, the psychological payoff of actually putting out the review and having a big public conversation with people about a game is substantial (and is the reason I do reviews). It actually takes a while to write a review. Even if you're thoughtfully preparing along the way while reading it, like I mentioned, preparing the final review takes a few hours (at least for me). Basically, choosing to do a review is signing up for a fair bit of work. We don't have all that many active reviewers. Looks like only 5 reviewers have posted something in the last 10 months? Palas recruited another reviewer fairly recently, and I myself only joined the team within the last year, so this isn't an area where we're completely stagnating, but finding interested and qualified people is not easy. To have a review, you have to have a game that people want to review. There are a ton of VNs coming out all the time, of course, but individual reviewers have their own preferences and interests, and not much incentive or desire (hopefully understandably) to review outside of things they're already interested in. And even within the bounds of those interests, things don't always work out. As an example, the Symphonic Rain HD remaster came out recently, and I picked it up with the intent of reviewing it since I really liked it back when I read the fan TL years ago. However, a couple hours in, I realized the release was sub-par in a lot of ways (backlog didn't work correctly, lots of proofing errors, translation did a poor job of capturing characterization), and I just couldn't stand the thought of sinking 40 hours into ruining my pleasant memories of a game by playing a bad release of it at that level of elevated scrutiny, just to wind up saying, "This game I loved got a sub-standard official localization and HD remaster," even though I think that's exactly the sort of review that would be great to put out there, in that it would likely create an interesting conversation. Now, all that said, I can personally say that I'm planning to pick up WagaHigh on release date and review it, since for whatever combination of reasons, it's caught my eye. I don't know how long it will take—my time is always limited—but you have my word there will be a review of it before too long after release.
I also want to add one important request, as a reviewer. If you want to support FuwaReviews, from my perspective, the best thing you can do is to make sure to comment on the reviews, in whichever venue you prefer: the tweets (retweets are always appreciated), the FuwaReviews blog posts themselves, associated forum threads, the Facebook post I guess (I've never even looked at those to see if there are comments... I probably should...). Doing reviews, for me, is an extension of why I'm on Fuwanovel in the first place: I like VNs, and I want to talk to people about them. The payoff of all that time spent reviewing a game is all in that subsequent conversation a review sparks.

    Hey everyone o/
we’ve been quiet for a while, time to get the latest numbers out 😉
Today, Nanako’s route crossed the 50% mark, leaving us with 7123 lines to be translated.
TLC on Tsugumi’s route is near completion, editing on the other hand is slow as usual.

As a programmer I’m not really involved in the translation process, so naturally I expected a lot of off-time once the initial “hacking” was finished.
That however has turned out to be a huge miscalculation, there is still a lot of work to be done.
I don’t even want to know how many hours I’ve spent staring at hex editors and disassemblers, examining every instruction of the yuka engine…
Without exaggerating, at this point I probably know more about the internals of yuka than the people at smee, who worked with it to create the game ^^
The latest project has been to add support for non shift-jis compliant fonts to the engine, because the two fonts shipped with the game (MS Gothic and MS Mincho) don’t exactly look great with English text.
After several hours it turned out I only had to patch 2 bytes of the executable from 0x80 (SHIFTJIS_CHARSET) to 0x01 (DEFAULT_CHARSET):

So here we have it, Vera Sans in Lover Able ^^
Some of you might recognize the font from other titles (e.g. DaCapo II)

And since there was no option to enable it, I simply added another button to the options menu (just a few additional lines of code and some graphics):

    Take care, Atom
