I am a ultra Grisaia Fanboy. Keep that in mind.

To be honest... I don't recommend this one, of all of Ensemble's works.  Koi no Canvas and Gokigen Naname are much, much better...

Just for kicks I played a bit of 3 when it came out, and the gameplay was very tedious and boring. These games are essentially nukige, the main point is the h-scenes and you will not get a particularly compelling story out of them, nor will their gameplay enthrall you. You play to fap. I guess the dialogue was slightly amusing from time to time. I stopped pretty much after beating the first boss in 3 (and losing to it, a couple of times, you know, for the very interesting "plot"-filled bad ends), so maybe things changed, but that's not how it was looking.

ヤミハナ reacted to Clephas in For Love of VNs: For Beginners
This is a list of good games to begin your journey into playing VNs in Japanese.  Inevitably, most of these games will be moege, charage, or nakige.  There is little to be done about this, as chuuni, sci-fi, and fantasy-action VNs have linguistic barriers that will be too much for someone still struggling with reading conversational Japanese.  In particular, the biggest barrier for someone who is used to dealing with Japanese that is 'spoken', rather than 'written' is the existence of literary Japanese.  The turns of phrase, different wording, etc. that an inexperienced reader might run into can either be seen as a learning experience or as pure confusion, depending on your level and state of mind.  As such, I am only putting down games that are readable for someone who understands spoken Japanese but is weaker in literary Japanese.  I will also put a 'second level' for those who are interested in challenging themselves a little but not too much.  This one will be for those who are willing to see if they can handle the easier action scenes, more difficult event descriptions, and the like.

    First Level:

    Maji Suki Marginal Skip
    Suzunone Seven
    Kamikaze Explorer
Tsuisou no Augment (this game is hilarious, and it is not a moege.  I recommend this to people who liked the atmosphere of Yume Miru Kusuri)
Akabanzu - Real na Sekai de Boku ga Kimi ni Dekiru Koto (this game has only minor scientific terms and jargon, mostly related to AI and MMO's.  Since it is distinctly possible you ran into these terms just watching anime, I went ahead and put this up.)
Chuning Lover (this game is just generally rofl)
Ichiban Janakya Dame Desu Ka (one of the few almost-pure comedy in my personal lineup)
    Otomimi Infinity
Sakura Iro Quartet (this and the game above are for mimikko fetishists)
Ryuusei Kiseki (sci-fi moege, fairly easy.  Hardest parts are when the protag begins preaching about his hobby)
    Shiawase Kazoku-bu
Sukimazakura to Uso no Machi (surrealist fantasy moege... mildly funny, interesting in general)
Toppara - Zashikiwarashi no Hanashi (use this as your crash course in youkai)
    12/30/2014 edit
    Love Revenge
Real Imouto ga Iru Ooizumi-kun no Baai
    08/15/2016 Edit
    Sakigake Generation
    Minamijuujisei Renka
    Primal Hearts
    Primal Hearts 2
    World Election
    Koko Kara Natsu no Innocence

    Second Level:
Irotoridori no Sekai (yeah, it is being translated, but it isn't done yet)
Konata yori Kanata Made (relatively low-difficulty action/event scenes, as well as being an excellent entry point into the utsuge genre)
Tiny Dungeon series (relatively normal conversational and event scenes, and the actions scenes are relatively low-difficulty, if somewhat fast-paced)
Draculius (similar to above in the action)
Haruka ni Aogi, Uruwashi no (this game is probably one of the top three non-action/sci-fi/fantasy games I've played and it is harder than the games on the first level... but in exchange it is also a lot better, lol)
Hyper→Highspeed→Genius (relatively high difficulty to first level, but it is easier than the games I'd prefer to introduce people to, lol)
Koisuru Otome to Shugo no Tate - The Code Name is "Shield 9" (fanboys of fantranslations know this as one of the many dead projects)
    Ore no Tsure wa Hitodenashi
Kaminoyu (this one and the one above are your source for non-human love in this stage, lol)
Otome ga Tsumugu, Koi no Canvas (higher difficulty than first level primarily due to the art terms)
Aete Mushisuru, Kimi to no Mirai
Akatsuki no Goei (first one only, later ones are too hard for Second Level)
Re: birth Colony Lost Azurite (this, Tiny Dungeon, and Draculius are probably the hardest games on this list)
Fake Azure Arcology (direct link to the game above, and ditto)
Kimi to Boku to Eden no Ringo
Koiiro Soramoyou (famous for certain VN fanboys)
Kimi to Boku to no Kishi no HIbi (recent release, fairly easy, good protag)
Lunaris Filia (a vampire charage, for those who want some of that)
Naka no Hito nado Inai!! Tokyo Hero Project
    Dracu-riot
    Sakura Tale
Tojita Sekai no Tori Colony (this game is pretty hilarious, especially if you insist on seeing all of the loop ends before getting to the true end)
Tsuki ni Yorisou, Otome no Sahou (similar to Koi no Canvas, in that the terms that will give you the most trouble are the technical ones - this time for sewing and clothing design)
    12/30/2014 edit
Zannen na Oretachi no Seishun Jijou
    Kimi no Tonari de Koishiteiru
Sekai wo Sukuu Dake no Kantan na Shigoto
Nanairo Reincarnation (borderline within this if you are familiar with the base concepts of youkai and ghosts as understood by the Japanese)
    Sakigake Generation

Edit:  This will be the last in my series of lists.  I will edit them with additions occasionally, but I won't be making any new ones.  Have fun yall.

ヤミハナ reacted to Decay in Sekai Project April Q&A Livestream highlights
SP had a livestream today where they answered a bunch of questions from their forums and stream chat.
    I'll list off the highlights:
    1) Uncensored/uncut Maitetsu release: This was like the third question asked. "We definitely have something to announce by Anime Expo or sooner, we're just working out the logistics." I doubt the announcement they're hyping up will be "lol steam only." They recognized that it's controversial content, but said "we're working on it." "The intent is to bring Maitetsu over as best we can."
    2)  Kokonoe Kokoro (oh god why): engine issues are holding it back.
    3) Dovac's favorite game of all time is Final Fantasy 8. wtf.
    4) G-senjou 18+ version: akabeisoft just doesn't seem to like it? SP proposed it but got shot down.
    5) One of the biggest takeaways of the stream is that if you want something, just ask for it. Post about it on SP's forums, try to rally others to support the thread, that kind of thing. Japanese companies tend to need strong evidence of fan desire before they act on something. Basically, my interpretation of this is that instead of just sitting on some dark corner of the internet calling them idiots and criminals, actually attempting to open a dialogue and trying to reach out to the people making the decisions is a million times more effective at making a difference.
    6) Tenshin Ranman: "It's just sitting there." 16% translated, they want it to get further before they start promoting it. 18+ maybe. My interpretation is that they seem to be stretched a bit thin and simply haven't really started that in earnest yet.
    7) Wagamama High Spec: One guy said that 18+ version is going to happen and there will be more info at Anime Expo, another said that it's still in discussion. The developer seems interested in pushing the all-ages version first and foremost, in order to cross-promote with the anime (which will obviously not be 18+).
8 ) Chrono Clock: Only about 10% done. They didn't have the engine code and had to do extensive assembly hacking to get it to work right in English.
    9) Other Unison Shift titles: Focusing on Ley Line for now. They only just announced it and seem to still be working out the particulars of the deal. Flyaaabbleee Heaaarrttt.
    10) Grisaia no Meikyuu: As their latest KS update indicates, engine differences are causing the 18+ version to be postponed, and some of the 18+ content is still being translated. It will lag a month or so behind.
    11) Root Double: They can't say much, it's "complicated," they're working on it, Soon™.
    12) Console versions: They have Vita and PS4 devkits, they're working on some console versions (no word on if that extends beyond the KS stretch goals they've met). Very often, console versions of VNs are published by different companies than the original creators of the PC versions, and require you to either establish seperate licensing deals which may not be possible, or do the ports themselves, which they presumably don't have infinite skilled manpower for. 3DS has weird software limitations.
    13) Someone basically asked about Kindred Spirits and Gahkthun being on steam and if that will influence to SP re-evaluating their censorship policies. So, the transcript SP provides basically shuts down the question and says that they have their own guidelines they'll follow, but the stream got into a lot more detail. Essentially, they've taken notice of Gahkthun getting rated by the ESRB and releasing on Steam, and said that they're looking into that route, but it could also backfire if they rate a game AO and suddenly Sony is asking questions about whatever console ports they may be working on. They also said that in general, they've been relaxing the content guidelines a lot in recent times. Whereas before Sakura Spirit was scandalous, now it seems rather mundane. They said they have some possible controversial content coming to Steam in the future.
    14) Alternative pricing models: A "recent example of bad DLC segmentation" (Sharin no Kuni) is something they wouldn't ever willingly do. In the case of G-Senjou no Maou, the voiced/unvoiced versions was something AkabeiSoft2 thought would really help, and the buying habits for that title seemed to have somewhat reinforced that belief. According to them, it used to be an even more drastic split and SP had to talk them down. AkabeiSoft seems to really like doing that kind of feature segmentation.

ヤミハナ reacted to Down in what is happening
I'm not really sure why it's been happening those last few days, I can tell you that there is some protection active on the forum because I use a VPN and have to solve a god damn captcha every day.
Anyway usually there's always a mod on but all it takes is me going to the dentist for half an hour for a spammer to pop up of course ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It's not a major difficulty to get rid of the spam and it rarely stays more than an hour or two so it's not that big of an issue.

Not a fan of the communitie's attitude towards requests. I get it, no one is expected to translate anything for anyone, but at least have more tact. Especially to those new to the site. Also, perhaps a thread could be created where a poll could be taken to see which titles people would like to see translated. Nothing has to come from it, but perhaps a translator may see it and consider it. To OP: Your best bet is to ask Mangagamer or Jast. I wouldn't bother with Sekai tho.

There was an attempt at translating it that has been dead for forever now. Something you'll have to learn is that no matter the quality of the VN, most VNs will never be picked up and even if they are, they won't be fully TLed unless it's an official translation and some companies can't even promise that.

I was pondering about starting this threat for quite some time, but final 'nail' was from "Philosophical/psychological VN"  thread in recommendations.

" VN you can actually learn something from ". But do you really?
I have a big problem here myself. But first things first:
I'm reading lots of books, watching tv series, watching movies. I have a fair amount of knowledge about movies, much higher than 'regular watcher'. So I can easily distinct when somehting is 'valuable', or just plain shit.
And I believe in them. When charatcers in books/series/movies ['b/s/m' for future refference] are doing 'interesting' thngs I believe them. I believe that science b/s/m selling me is somehow right (of course I'm not going to believe in science in movies like Transformes or Lucy, but when highly acclaimed one is dealing with f.e biology, psychology, or 'down to earth' science I immidiatelly believe it).
I also believe in human interactions. When guy is approaching girl in interesting way, I believe that this could work. When characters are responding to 'normal live' events, like fe death of somebody close, I read or watch it and I believe that this behaviour could actually happen in real life.
I'm obtaining a knowledge about human behaviour, about patterns, about how they think, how they act, what could tickle them, what could irk them.

And there goes VNs. I spend more than last 6 month almost solely focusing on reading them. And I don't believe them. Like, at all.
Situations, even when they're down to earth, ignites sometimes so bizarre reactions from heroines, that sometimes it's just interesting to read how ridiculous this could be (I'm looking at you Grisaia, Sharin, Hoshimemo), but I never absorb this as any 'pattern' of how people actualy might act. When girls suffers from PTSD after some trauma in her childhood I believe in what movie is showing to me, but when VN is doing this I found it cancerous.
Same with science. Steins;Gate had a fair amount of actuall science, many aspects of that I was familiar with, so I could naturally believe that rest of it made sense too. But I couldn't. Other VNs killed that ability in me.

I'm reading VNs but other that pure 'fun' or 'cancerous fun', I don't find any valuable things, like I do in other creations of culture.
So when VN is 'making me think', like Sharin no Kuni was trying with theme of 'society', I think for myself about it, but when VN is proposing some answers I immidiatelly rejects them, believing that they're taken out of ass, scientifically innacurate.
How is it with you? Do you believe in VNs? Do you absorb what they're showing as something which mirrors RL to some point, or rejects it all? And how it looks for you with b/s/m?
