Of course you can and the notion that writing skills stop at prose is ridiculous. The ability to craft a story, to build a world, to pace events, it's all part of a writer's skill and can't be shielded with language barriers.

Bad TL can easily ruin "the ability to craft a story, to build a world, to pace events". Also, I appeal to the statement "Ryushiki shows his skill as a writer unlike the other hacks". I need to know what so special about his writing skills. Because I'm professional writer and I don't see anything extraordinary. He's good for VN standard but that's all.

Don't compare visual novels to written novels

I was just joking around because clearly the OP doesn't want to express the opinion but to target people who like Rewrite. And you can compare VN to books when you talk about "the ability to craft a story, to build a world, to pace events".

But I agree about stupid textboxes.

Do you read Japanese? If not, then you can't really judge the writer's skill with Fun-TL.

Key is a major VN studio. It's not really forgivable to be so cheap on CGs.

It's not EA and visual novels aren't AAA titles.

unless you are someone like Ryushiki who puts out games famous for their plots and stories

You know, there're many other great VN's writers. Romeo f.e. Wait, he's done one of the Rewrite route. Oh, no...

    49 minutes ago, GUTB said:

The only idea something is happening is from the text alone.

Please don't ever read any book. Because, suprise, no pictures there!

Also....Summer Days has much better romance stories.

LOL, that is most hilarious thing I've ever read. Much funnier than Summer Days.

  3. It's up to person to decide what is boring or lazy. But you can't build your statement on the technical details and general impressions only. Well, you can but it doesn't make it 100% valid. The House in Fata Morgana has one of the lowest production values I've ever seen but it's considered as masterpiece. I know, it's doujin but even I can make better backgrounds in Gimp. Were the authors lazy or maybe it's because of a tight budget?

You know there's a rumor, that "Grisaia no Kajitsu" was the "Final Fantasy project" for FW and basically saved them from the bankruptcy. Even if it's a lie, most of the VN's companies live in constant fear of failure. Key is no exception. Their engine is so old that Rewrite was lagging on my high-end laptop. But still the stories they create are engaging and colorfull most of the time.

And the last example. I'm currently playing Dracu-riot and can confirm the lack of CG. They reuse one scene again and again and have no sprites for supporting cast at all. Does it make the game mediocre? Or less funny?

Bait or not, I still believe the good game doesn't deserve such treatment. If someone has different opinion, he or she better shows us the real arguments.

Rewrite is often called Key's finest VN

By whom? For the record, it's Clannad.

    28 minutes ago, GUTB said:

The common route could easily be cut in half and nothing at all would be lost. The SoL comedy is bad outside of the Yoshino / chuuni segments and a few gag scenes.

Actually, SoL part with occult club buisness is the most funny part of the VN.

    29 minutes ago, GUTB said:

All of the heroines are interesting, but their routes are mostly mediocre hack-jobs with the exception of Lucia's probably due to Ryushiki's greater talent. They all have giant plot holes , characterization problems, and like all mediocre VNs the heroine routes forget most other characters even exist.

In other words you simply hate all writers except Ryushika. Yeah,I like Stephen King but I despise Richard Bahman.

    34 minutes ago, GUTB said:

Several important characters don't have sprites.

It's a usual story with Key's games. And most of us play VN for the plot not the sprites.

    37 minutes ago, GUTB said:

Some high quality VNs can augment CGs with animated sprites and other effects to build a scene, but Rewrite does very little in the this department. In general scenes are very static, boring and lifeless

Yeah, I afraid what you can say about Steins Gate with its primitive special effects...

    39 minutes ago, GUTB said:

Now compare that with the festival in Summer Days -- visuals, audio, sound effects, etc, immerse you into those scenes.

You mean oyakodon and twincest scenes? Definitely, the right way to make life festive.

    42 minutes ago, GUTB said:

So, in general, it seems Rewrite is just a mediocre VN at best, just longer than most in the genre.

Bad trolling, mate. Try harder next time.

  5. Almost every moege has one loli route nowadays. You need to be more specific other then "cute". Saya from https://vndb.org/v97 is cute but also frightening. Sion from https://vndb.org/v1286 is cute and genius.

You can find loli heroines in

    https://vndb.org/v1474

    and

    https://vndb.org/v8213

    and

    https://vndb.org/v5652

    and of course

    https://vndb.org/v6245

Are you searching for looks or loli-character's quirks? Or for something like that https://vndb.org/v8435 ?

This is exactly the wrong attitude to take.  We have exactly one way to convince MoeNovel to do things properly:  Not buying their bowdlerized games, and demanding they fix their broken shit.  Giving them money for doing a shitty job, because someone will fix it for them for free, only tells them to keep doing what they're doing.

If you care about good translations, and if ridiculous censorship bothers you, then don't buy their products.  You're of course free to do whatever you want, but if you buy their products then the message you send is that this is acceptable to you, and you want them to do it more.

We're not their target audience. Steam's crowd is. As much as I hate to admit it, our opinion doesn't matter much. In such niche medium the company's evil deeds are pretty evident, but to influence their decision to cut or not cut the content is more difficult because of too small community power.

    12 minutes ago, KonpekiUmi said:

The translation really is awful. How can they mess up something as important as translating the source language for a localized work?

Because they know we have no other legal choice not to buy it. If it's really good title, we will "grit our teeth and read it anyway" as our fellow member said.

This is impossible! It's a commom knowledge that the protagonist can't be smarter then the average otaku :)

Anyway, I also suggest you Dracu-riot. It's from the Yuzusoft, the creators of Nobel Works. It's practically the same game, only a thousand times more fun. And the MC is much more tolerable.

A lot of western countries in general don't allow lolicon... Like Canada where I live. If there's actually lolicon (that can't be reasonably avoided with a giant "these characters are 18+" sticker - i.e. a story element is that the characters are under 18 or they look very, very obviously under 18), then it's gonna be a lot harder for companies to license given the potential risks to their customers and lost revenue from not being able to sell it to entire countries.

There's that chinese VN on Steam that features a naked loli, so... Steam doesn't allow sex. What you have beyond that doesn't matter so much. Maitetsu is eventually coming to steam, after all.

I know that. I was being sarcastic. Apparently, I failed.

    7 minutes ago, Lambda said:

But yeah, this game isn't interesting to me, either. Can't even tell if it's a straight VN from that or an idol game, although vndb says it's all in 3D so. I'm most impatient for Frontwing to just smoothly get Himawari out already at this point...

I'm waiting for Island. So, every lowcost FrontWing's VN makes the waiting harder.

  9. Firstly, you need to understand why a person need to learn another language. If it is necessary for his buisness, travel or exploring the foreign culture and traditions, it is useful exercise. But to learn the language just for the game, I don't think it's incredibly reasonable move. Just how many kamiges left untranslated for us to sacrifice our minds for moonrunes?

I've been learning English for nearly two decades and have no problem with books, novels or movies, but still it's hard for me to write and formulate my thoughts. That's because I have no experience with native English speakers in real life. You just can't call yourself a polyglot without spending time in another country.

Secondly, it's not the matter of how someone spends their free time. The most important thing is how you treat your activity. If you learn the language just for the praise, it will lead you nowhere. All efforts will be in vain. And such person will be perceived as a hypocrite. Do not treat your lifetime so lightly.

Whatever it is, everyone has a choice. And everyone is master of their time. Just think ahead before doing something.

Well I don't think this counts, but in a sense is kinda like a visual novel? First thing off top in my head when mentioning breaking the fourth wall is Ar nosurge. Also analogue story insert you inside the story in a weird way, so there is that too. (Take note no one of the mentioned games has sex scenes or anything like it, so they might not met your expectation. Or maybe what you're looking for would be more reasonable to achieve by playing a VR porn game? It does seem to kinda insert you inside the game although that might count as cheating.)

Ar Nosuruge? It's console only and I don't have any (sigh). Analoge Story is good but it doesn't count or every western RPG with character's creating would suffice. As for VR, I don't think there is any porno game for it yet. And the price... my God. My girlfriend would kill me if I buy it just for porn :) Besides I like visual novels. I prefer my porn with decent story. Sometimes story is cooler then porn.

Well, Umineko often comes really close to breaking the fourth wall, and a reader, actually, plays quite an important role in the story. But it still tries to keep everything in-universe, so I am not sure it is exactly what you are looking for.

Thanks everyone. I think I need to add something to make things a little bit clearly.

When I was playing eroge some time ago, suddenly the idea came to me, why developers put so much efforts in girls and so little in MC. Do I need this shallow protagonist to be my alter-ego? Maybe, there's visual novel where I can be not the silent reader but also a participant. So I looked and I didn't find anything... The vast sea of VN's themes, tropes and traits has never let me down before.

I remember now. Time for reread :)

As I said in the OP, it's not exactly what I am searching. I often meet such passages in eroges, but never I've experienced complete breaking of the forth wall, I wonder why.

  14. I know, you can use VNDB for that but what I am actually asking, are there games where characters not just say "it's eroge or something" but acknowledge the existence of readers, speak to them like they do to each other. It's ok if it's japanese, I'm use to VNR. And it would be great if it's nukige. Yeah, I can't believe myself how rotten I've become...

    Thank you in advance!

I look into it, I am new to this whole VN thing I'm just trying to figure out what I like and don't like atm. Thanks for the recommendations.

Oh, then I have to be more specific. Majikoi is the short name for "Maji de Watashi ni Koishinasai!" For now it has three games in English.

    Original

    https://vndb.org/v1143

    Sequel

    https://vndb.org/v6245

    Fan-Disc for Sequel (only A-1)

    https://vndb.org/v10361

If you're into erotic comedy and hate too much drama, it's the best game to start. Grisaia no Kajitsu has more depth and big emotional ups and downs. But it also funny in the beginning. You can try anything but I have to say, that there's no official english release for Majikoi. And I dought there will be ever. So you best chance is FanTL and import.

Good Luck and may the Power of Eroge be with you.
