  1. The House in fata morgana is the kamige, one of those vns you have to read before you die. It's maybe all age, but it aims to adult people. I mean, real adults that don't watch anime and still read a lot. Tokyo Babel is a boring pretentious game with some ridiculous religious interpretation. But it has high production values and godly voice acting.

As for the great eroge recommendation, have you tried Majikoi series? It's fun and sexy like hell.

am i the only one thinking that if that vn doesnt sold well, its ends up like supipara?

At least, Supipara is the new IP. But I am afraid, they will share the same fate, because no one likes short episodic games that reuse the same assets over and over again. Thank's God, no crowdfunding this time, so the West will get all the volumes no matter what.

no more cringe cancerous awkward and unnecessary porn

'Cause that's what people really want from them. No porn, episodic and cute girls wth guns.

For me, one of the main selling point of the trilogy is self-sufficient, extraordinary and witty protagonist. I wonder, how good is Aoi Haruto. I don't find this description  "Haha, my classmates often tell me I'm a total asshole." very inspirational.

Please this game wouldn't even be released if it weren't for the English Steam market.

Now we know who to blame.

They better work on Island. The age of Grisaya in The West is gone.

The most funny thing is that the spinoff might come out faster then the last game from the original trilogy. Could be confusing for some readers.

so why aren't we having a market for Android and iOS VNs just ye

Because no one really needs any VN on mobile devices when you can play Pokemon Go or Angry Birds. There are literally millions games to choose.

I have a tablet and I always thought how great would be if I could read all VNs on it, it's definitively something that I would look very forward to.

You can do it with VNDS magic or with the streaming app like Splashtop.

Back to the topic. I found out that "5pb" is involved with publishing "Ore-tachi ni Tsubasa wa Nai - Under the Innocent Sky", so for Navel it would be very hard to bring this title on Steam. So, maybe they don't have much choice and they have picked their hit game. But it doesn't explain why it has to be PS2 version.

May I know to whom are you referring to? I am trying to follow you here :D I thought at first that you meant Japan as a country but the more I am looking at it, it looks like you are referring to a person? O_O Whose alias is Bamboo?

He's Overdrive higher-up. You can read the interview with him here

And also that there's a difference between Japanese and English industries, in that products in the English market have a long tail (that is sell continuously years after they were released compared to the Japanese market where most of the product is sold in the first month.) Because of this long tale they can't start analysing to much later.

Also, the prices are different. In Japan we have 70 - 90$ and here is 45$ for the most expensive games. I see a logic in your arguments but I will stay with my belief for now.

Localising titles is a slow process. A VERY slow process when Japanese companies are involved. The idea that MG were able to shift company direction in a matter of months and produce a bunch of titles completely different from last years bunch of titles is something I would like confirmation over, because it goes against people's general observation.

For some titles it is slow, it depends on negotiations. And it wasn't a matter of months but more then a year if you consider the time before the actual announcements. I think that if the Steam decline would not have happened we could see a slightly different line of games at the Anime Expo or Otacon. I have no doubt that the company is hiding in a secret other things that it is too early to talk about.

MG's output has always maintained a fairly consistent ratio of nukige v. non-nukige, I don't know where people get the idea that they changed their focus one way or another at any point. There was one big con a few years ago where they announced nothing but nukige and got a lot of flak for it, but it was just an unfortunate coincidence (and admittedly, a shockingly bad PR decision).

The major change has happened after the ridiculous success of Go! Go! Nippon! ~My First Trip to Japan~ in early 2014.

SP being slow is another myth. Translation speed varies greatly from game to game, MG and SP are more or less equa all things considered. Some titles are translated very fast (Clannad, IYLMTSS), some very slow (DC III, Himawari, WEE). The slowpoke of VN loc. industry is definitely JAST USA.

Then Decay and Tay should stop posting VNTS every week. It's so misleading :)

And I don't care about JAST. Nobody cares about them anymore.

Also, I believe that Erogamer has every right to complain because he's a legitimate buyer. He could stay silent, walk away and just pirate the game. But he is trying to find a way to get it legally.

1 - 'Many' is relative. Relative to '0' sure, they have had 'many' all-ages releases. Relative to the actual number of games they put out - no, they don't put out 'many' all-age releases.

Steam Ready titles. My mistake was to emphasize on all age tag.

    5 hours ago, Rooke said:

2 - The releases announced this year at the various cons would have been organised BEFORE the success or failure of Fata and others would have been known. So the relationship between the number of 18+ titles and the success or failure of their all-age line up is suspect.

In case of Fata Morgana Fan Disc it's true. But I can compare MG Anime Expo 2015 and 2016 announcements and clearly see the drifting towards 18+ releases. They don't abandon Steam but they and Sekai are adapting to the new reality.

    5 hours ago, Rooke said:

3 - MG's line up always has been, and always will be dominated by 18+ stuff. Anyone thinking their all-ages venture was a serious shift in company direction was taking wild mental leaps into the unknown. Tokyo Babel was suggested by Conjuror and Supipara was probably suggested by Minori (a project that isn't doing well in Japan either I believe.) MG has been listening to the titles their translators have wanted to translate. Gahkthun was likely something Koestl wanted to translate and MG got the license. That being said, MG has wanted to, and has made an effort, into branching into serious story related stuff. They didn't like their NukigeGamer tag, and they're in the financial position where they could choose riskier titles. Still don't see a 'focus' on all-age stuff, although I do see more variety in their line-up.

I know Good Haro mentioned how exactly MG managmet choose their next titles. The translator's opinion is relevant but it is not the final word in making decision. There are also business expectations from the western market.

    5 hours ago, Rooke said:

Hence the question mark. It meant 'what are you basing your statement on'?

I am basing it on sale's figures and changes in MG and SP policies.

    5 hours ago, Rooke said:

    Also Gahkthun isn't all ages.

Technically it's not, but game's H-scenes are subpar at best and very tame.

I understand, that a story title doesn't always means all-age But it wasn't my point to begin with. I just don't see how Navel can succeed with the PS2 version Shuffle on Steam. They have better chance with MG or DenpaSoft, or even Nutaku.

  11. 2 hours ago, Rooke said:

    ... ?

Is my English so bad? I'm sorry. I was trying to say that the previous Mangagamer lineup contained many "Steam ready" titles like The Fata Morgana, Tokyo Babel, The Gakhtun, Supipara and all of them behaved poorly in sales this year.

  12. 9 hours ago, trickzzter said:

By the way.. Have you seen the sales numbers of Steins;Gates? http://steamspy.com/app/412830

14,144 copies have been sold so far. It's a really old title, that was already released by Just USA. And yet it sells much better than most of new titles released in Japan

Well, it's still lower then early Sakura's games on Steam. For such famous and well-known even outside otaku crowd franchise it's pretty average numbers. And please don't compare these figures to the japanese sales. The VN's there sell strong every month with full price (~90$), while on Steam the biggest sale goes in the first couple of weeks.

It's a matter of fact that Steam miracle for visual novels, both Evns and Jvns, is gone now. That's why MG went from all-age lineup to entirely 18+. That's why SP remembered about Denpasoft and made a deal with Nutaku. It's a matter of money. And while all-age versions on Steam are still selling better then in companie's stores before the bubble, look at Flowers and Nurse Love Addiction numbers (1,552 and 2,587 respectively) or the tragedy of The Labyrinth of Grisaia (2,932).

I know, we can't really trust SteamSpy data, but I believe that the Steam buyers aren't very loyal or knowledgable. The first Grisaya game sold well because of anime, Princess Evangile and Nekopara both sold well because of Youtuber's, Yuri Ghosts sold well becuse of nudity precedent. In the end of the day, what's left is the core audience that could support pricy games if they have H-content. Everybody understand, so why Navel don't. Why is so hard to make all-age version and 18+ patch. It's not like Shuffle has some questionable content that could rise the storm among SJWs. Or maybe it's the first independent try of market for them to see how it'll go. I'm afraid they are too late.

Okay, thanks for confirmation then. Just for my confirmation here, 'low chance' here meaning that the chance for the VN had low sexual content are low (It could also refer to impossible, because after all 0% chance could also said as low here). Sorry.

You don't have to. I made a mistake and after another "carefull styding" I've found out that there are only 80 CG. Still, 90% is hentai. It's nukige, alright. And I really want to know, how long is the Steam version :).

  14. 8 minutes ago, Mr Poltroon said:

Now... it's a nukige... I can see the appeal of playing all ages versions of them but... What kind is it? Did they add scenes to replace the gaping holes left by the sex? Did they just cut it out? If it's the latter... Even I'd have to admit it'd be nothing but an hour of meaningless content.

I am eager to find out, because this https://vndb.org/v17515 is also coming to Steam. So based on the experience we'll know what to expect.

You're in luck, as this OELVN will be fully voiced by Japanese seiyuus:

    Quantum Suicide: https://vndb.org/v18699

Well, I need suicide right now :)

Jokes aside, this one https://vndb.org/v19322 will have them too. If it's Evn in japanese style, that's ok, I guess. But for western authors I recommend stick with non-voice version while it's very expensive to hire professional cast. F.e. I think, actors in "Life is Strange" did a good job. But I don't think EVNs have budget for this. And hiring someone with lower skills ("Just Desert") only makes the things worse.

Die? How's it dying? If you want to let it die because it doesn't suit your interests, whatever they may be, why should you feel obligated to support it? And yet it moves.

Other than that, Rooke is saying what I should probably be saying, so go bother him instead.

You need to read posts before replying. I specifically mentioned about my interests. Use the word "taste". I like good visual novels regardless of origin. I critisize western vn scene more because I think it's time for it to grow up.

The western VN scene is larger and more vibrant than ever before right now. It's very far from dying.

Do you guys read my post? I said about giving up. When people accept the things how they are that's when the market is doomed. Do you believe that if you feed the public with mediocre product, sooner or later it will get tired of the Evns. The sales are declayning. Maybe it's temporary but if it's not...  Am I so wrong to demand something big and exceptional from the Evns?

    Not particularly.

People don’t defend ‘bad’ OELVNs. However, people who come from a Japanese eroge background will tend to put a heavy emphasis on a) sex and b) art, and therefore dismiss OELVNs out of hand. People from a Japanese storytelling background will put emphasis on c) play time. This causes problems because these are not areas the industry outside Japan excel in.

OELVNs tend to take the medium in a different direction than Japanese VNs. Japanese VNs are heavy on story and light on agency in games. OELVNs place a higher emphasis on agency, utilising to a fuller extent the ‘choice’ mechanic that the Japanese developers tend to use as a gimmick, but sacrifices overall length.

Because of this, many people from the Japanese world will deride OELVNs for being crap because they don’t follow the priorities of the Japanese industry. Hypocritically though they then mock them when they’re TOO much like the Japanese industry.

People into VNs for the ‘eroge’ will never like the direction OELVNs are going in. People into VNs for lengthy stories won’t appreciate that (currently) there isn’t the budget to make such things, or if there is more budget is spent on adding branches and consequences rather than length (like a book.)

VNs are one of the unique mediums that can take advantage of non-linear storytelling. Interactive storytelling. Player choice and consequence. OELVNs are heading in a direction where all of these things are explored, Japanese VNs tend to be books with pictures. In the Japanese industry, hardly any of the advantages of the medium are currently being explored, and most VNs can easily be written as books. On the whole it's a stagnant industry. I find the Japanese industry comparatively boring. That is, they don't tell as good a story as a novel, but they want to pretend they are. Maybe one day they'll awaken to the potential of the medium they're writing in and I'll be interested, but at the moment I don't get anything from a Japanese VN that I don't get from a novel.

I can go into more detail, but suffice to say that the OELVN industry is one with incredible potential, is growing rapidly, but is often derided by people unwilling to give it a chance.

That is why they’re defended so vigorously.

Thank you for your interesting opinion.

Can people appreciate the both industries equally? Do they have to choose? I don't think the ‘choice’ mechanic can save inconsistent writing. The story is the center of any visual novel, even if it's eroge. The story and the characters are what bring people on board. I see some good examples of former and latter in the english fanfics but rarely in Evns. I see great ideas and bad realization. They are so lazy in execution. It's like I'm reading class students homework. Sometimes they use the language worse then I'm right now. And I am ESL.

  17. 2 minutes ago, Palas said:

That's exactly the point. They don't. So what exactly you're expecting might never come simply because no one needs to cater to your tastes to go by, probably. Ebihime sure doesn't. So the great game either already exists (there ARE great OELVNs out there, multiple examples have been provided) or OELVNs are actually heading in a different direction that might or might not have great games, but that simply don't match your interests and make your whole point moot.

So, we should give up and let the western scene die? I think, we should support those efforts that could bring us some really good products. Different from Japanese of course, but still great.

And please, don't decide for me what my interests are. I like english writing style more then japanese. I believe Rin's route from KS is superior to most eastern romance vns. It happened once, so I'll be waiting for it to happen again.
