Is it just me or is the MG currently the best localization company for VNs right now ... I mean, comparing these three major ones, I have a considerably better opinion of MG than of JAST and SP.

They were so bad back in 2008 before Japanese handed marketing in the hands of Western's. And they still make mistakes. Many people complain about poor QC of Funbag Fantasy.

    No

All characters are over 18, right?

Allocation of translators most likely. Everybody’s been waiting for Django Orange from JAST for … I dunno, close to 5 years with no end in sight. 2 isn’t very long in comparison.

Comparing SP to Jast is not an excuse.

People need to get over their anger at fan-TLs being licensed. Here’s something you probably didn’t know, Himawari was 100% fan-translated by Conjueror before he offered it up to Mangagamer (and probably would have been fan released if MG turned him down.) And still not released, because official localisations take time.

I don't care about fan-TL much. It's free, so we have no room for complain. And I did know about Himawari. I think MG decided to hold the game for a convenient moment. Recently, they release one big title per month. It's also a bad practice but they can offer many other good games instead.

I look forward to the games that have already bought or intend to buy. WEE, Grisaia, SakuSaku, Fault, Sierra Ops, Crono Clock, Hoshimemo, Wagamama High Spec. In 2 years? I am afraid even think about release date of Maitetsu or Baldr Sky.

    30 minutes ago, Rooke said:

But at the end of the day, people aren't entitled to a fan release in the first place. If it happens, it's a bonus. If it doesn't, then people'll just have to stomach it.

Again, I'm perfectly fine when fan-TL becomes oficial work. What I don't like is when the company deliberately delay the game's release. Like MG or Jast. But SP is the special case, because they're frequently using crowdfounding.

  3. 31 minutes ago, Rooke said:

No, SP gained a bad reputation from Dovac. The 'constantly breaking promises' thing is just an excuse people use to try and present their irrational hatred as something which stems from reasonable reasons. Often it doesn't. SP don't constantly (relative to how many promises they've made and titles they've released) break their promises at all. They've been a few, but nothing to justify the amount of hatred in the community.

I don't hate them personally, I dissapointed in them. And I just can not believe that one person can generate so much hatred. I work in a little localization company and I'm familiar with the relationships between top-brass and subordinates. If you're right, that means that SP is incredibly unprofessional company.

It's not because someone was super "stingy" about ero content, or that Sekai Project's original staff have some vendetta against sex content

Not the whole ero content, just some part of it, apparently about lolis. That's why they keep silence about 18+ Maitetsu. It won't happen in any way. I don't believe even MG could risk with this title uncensored. But SP's stuff have to say it clear and loud and don't give us a false hope or base for conspiracy theories. I don't wany them to be the bad guys.

I was calm and patient for two years. They have to optimize their cataloge and actually start to release their games. Look at Chrono Clock TL. 34.44% ! And they going to release it in January 2017 according to VNDB? With adult version on Nutaku?

    when a fan-translation goes official

Um... yeah SakuSaku was 100% in April and in July Sekai took it away, so when do we exept to see the oficial English translation? In what year?

there are plenty of legitimate complaints that people have with them that they refuse to meaningfully address.  Poor communication, not providing backer rewards that were promised years ago, not being transparent when it comes to whether or not there will be 18+ versions

    This.

And we can't forget about Baldr Sky's drama. I really hope Nutaku's money will get us a full version of the title. In not so distant future.

Again, I do not like to accuse anyone without solid proof. But if the company management doesn't want to hear all of their fans, without exception, they have to deal with the negative public resonance. Or speculations. Silence breeds misunderstanding. Misunderstanding breeds anger. Anger creates resentment. A resentful people do not buy the games.

Someone who points his finger on others shouldn't forget that three fingers of his hand are directed on himself. I think PP would be better off checking out his own localization company first instead of badmouthing others. Especially since I remember some rants from him in the Jast forums too.

None of Sekai's releases I've played so far were buggy crash festivals or had untranslated parts because of a lack of proof reading. Can't exactly say the same for Jast's releases. <_<

That's true. He's not perfect (where's Sumaga?) but he's been doing it for 20 years and now lost interest in the VNs. Also, JAST gave us some pretty good games like Demonbane or Yumina. SP is a new company but it has already gained a bad reputation for constant breaking their promises. Still waiting for WEE Episode 3, Labirint of Grisaia 18+, Root Double OST... And they even don't like us. We're all pirates in their eyes.

As for SP, I'll stop criticizing them when they start to keep their promises.

    1 hour ago, babiker said:

Why are OELVNs generally considered worse than Japanese VNs?

Because they're made with a low effort and always based on the anime traits.

    1 hour ago, babiker said:

What are the attributes that make OELVNs stand out (in a positive way) from their Japanese counterparts?

Is Undertale an OELVN? And of so has it already made VNs popular in the west?... And if so has Fuwanovel lost its purpose of existence?!

No, it's not 'cause of gameplay. I'm sorry, when did that happened? For better or worse, Fuwanovel will never loose its purpose of existence. The site'll go down with the VN's scene in the late 2020's. And I'm an optimist.

Voice acting would have seriously detracted from the game, a ton. It also would have ruined some of the tricks the VN has up its sleeve to alter the reader's perspective.

Japanese voices, yes, would have but I'd try some english VA with some british accent.

    8 hours ago, littleshogun said:

To responding Solidbatman regarding voice acting there, guess I should said to each other there if you like it or not for Fata Morgana. But at least I think it could be attracted people to buy Fata Morgana if Novectale using famous seiyuu for the drama CD there (Of course, the consequence there would be the production cost would be higher). Once again, it's okay if you didn't like it voiced though.

I would like to see them changed the backgrounds. I'd bye the game again just for that.

  9. I usually read 1-3 VN at one time. So, if one if them starts to drag, I go to another game. But you have to be a fast reader with broad mind not to mess with each game's plot and characters. Also, some of the best visual novels need a special preparation or even right mood to embrace them. I've tried Sharin and LB three times before they won my attention.

And I like to think VN are like girls with different quirks and styles. And everyone has its own ideal type of girl. No need to struggle when the ocean is full with fish. With maybe few exceptions like Steins Gate, Muv Love, Ever 17. You just can't call yourself a true visual novel fan without finishing them. It's like a universal list or required set of knowledge. Like math in school. You have to do your homework.

  10. When I read someone complains about how is the game difficult to understand or the atmosphere is too dark to swallow or the plot is so confusing, I just want to scream: "Come on, people, it's an adult game with adult themes" and not some pretentious moege with fappable anime girls. It's not torture machine, it's extremely compelling and deep story with a live characters. The House in Fata Morgana is the kamige we don't often get in our lands and minding sales numbers don't deserve to get at all.

You know how one tells that visual novels are actually books with images and music? In 99% cases it's bullshit. I would never compliment Grisaia or Clannad if I had them in the book format. Yes, they both has good scenarios but not the writing. The Novectacle's game is something else: elegant and inspirational. I'm writer myself and I see how much work the author put in the original idea to make a literary masterpiece.

From the first encounter with the maid to the last spoken words I'v never been lost, disappointed or frustrated. I know why many players or readers hate flashbacks but in this case it's necessary evil to orchestrate the grand performance in the cursed mansion.

So many things I want to say but it's so hard not to spoil important things. Remember this, it's not scary or horror story. It's not especially traumatic or cringe worthy. It's not Berserk kinda suffering. It's a

    Spoiler

love story that would break your heart but lift your spirit.

I'm with Tay in his begging’s. Try it now, buy it now, you'll never regret. And if you will, then it means you're still not grown enough. Go back in couple of years when you can appreciate such sophisticated work of art.

As for the real shortcomings of the game, there are only three:

    1) Cheap backgrounds (what you expect from tiny doujin circle?)

    2) 800x600 (Yeah, kirikiri is a crap engine)

    3) Modern slang in some parts (nobody says "Ok" in 1099, ok?)

As for why vocal in the divine OST is Portuguese. What did you study in school? Pokemones? From the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, Portugal was a huge colonial empire. Read about Treaty of Tordesillas in Wiki. If I'll have chance to go back in those times, I think I can definitely hear some similar songs and instrumental compositions like in the soundtrack. I wish the characters would speak Portuguese or Spanish or French. I can imagine the great gothic movie based on the game's script. With Del Toro in the director's seat.

Sorry for my emotional escapade, but the game is worth it. Bless MG for bringing this incredible visual novel to us. And for God Sake, support it!

I don't see any good business reason not to use Aroduc's work, if he made a reasonable offer.  He's worked with JAST, who are notoriously inept with their project handling, so his expectations can't be THAT high.

There's no hint of this in Aroduc's post, but suppose Aroduc had demanded an adult release and Sekai Project refused to guarantee that?  That would be the only situation I could reasonably imagine where they'd have no choice but to turn Aroduc down (and maybe stonewall him and hope he changed his mind).

Aroduc complained about the game a lot, so I don't think he'd really demanded 18+ content. From the words he chose, I believe he's a very narcissistic person and he was deeply hurt by Sekai's ''give and leave" attitude. Another fan TL groups were just happy to earn some money and drop the projects into SP's hands but not him. They're all like kids. It's not the way the buisness works.

  14. 30 minutes ago, Nandemonai said:

We don't know, and never will, because companies never talk about this kind of thing in public unless it goes to court.  And believe me, it won't.

Maybe Aroduc wanted too much money.  Maybe SP are skinflints and gave an insultingly low offer.  Maybe the folks over at Giga were not impressed that someone decided to work on the title without their permission, and told Sekai Project that he would not be acceptable to them.

I figure the most likely explanation is Sekai Project was secretly negotiating for Baldr Sky at the same time Aroduc was secretly fan translating it.  And that neither one knew what the other one was doing.  So SP might have already inked a contract with another translator to work on the project.  It's still fairly rotten for SP to not even straight up tell Aroduc 'sorry, we can't hire you' and subject him to the no-reply treatment.  That's just straight up unprofessional.

The no-reply treatment is fairly common in the world of business.  If I submit my resume to a bunch of different places, I expect to not really hear back from places that have no interest.  They just don't respond.  I don't expect places that were actively talking to me to suddenly stop.  If a company and I are talking, and they decide 'this isn't going to work out, we don't think we want to hire you after all', but they've already started talking to me, or I've already had an interview?  Very bad form to simply start stonewalling.

Honestly, I get the feeling that Sekai Project's troubles almost all seem to stem from the unprofessional way they seem to be handling public relations and communication.  This issue was never going to make Aroduc happy (his work on a game he didn't even like is now wasted), but blowing him off is just stupid and short-sighted.  What if they want to work with him in the future?

Likewise, all the controversy over will-they-won't-they on whether their recent announcements will get adult releases.  If you take one of their twitter comments at face value, the only reason they didn't announce the adult versions was time constraints.  Okay, so why haven't they since?  Why have we been left to read the tea leaves, and try to read into statements like "well this game was explicitly announced for Denpasoft and Steam, this other game was only announced for Steam".  They said they'd have news to share at AX about Maitetsu uncensored; they said the reason they didn't reveal it there was they ran out of time at the panel.  Then why didn't they announce it at Otacon?  Or online?

So either they lied, or they were telling the truth and somehow something came up.  If they lied, and have no plans to make any such announcements and are simply trying to shut people up - this is terribly unprofessional, and makes them look bad, and makes people not trust them.  If they were telling the truth, then they are simply incompetent at public relations, they're so bad that they can't even keep track of the things they said they'd announce, or they commit to announcing info they really intend to announce but then it turns out they can't.

Either way I think SP would do well to get this under control.  They're generating a LOT of ill will towards themselves unnecessarily.  Even if the answers are "no adult versions of games X, Y, and Z for now, sorry, we tried" - telling the truth would hurt less than this.

I agree with you in many terms, though I dought Giga really knows about Aroduc. And even if they do, why not include Aroduc in the new team? Let him have his moment of glory, if it means to release BS sooner. This game's not getting any younger. Or shorter.

  15. Just now, novurdim said:

Probably something in the vein of a personal animosity, neither Aroduc nor Dovac are the most likeable people. Wouldn't surprise me if the whole drama stems from the disdain they might feel for each other, it's not like we know how exactly Aroduc asked/proposed things or how he had been refused.

True enough, but it's buisness and a pretty big franchise, the biggest after Muv-Love, so they both could swallow their pride and make a deal for the sake of money... I mean, fans. Or, maybe after recent flops SP experiences financial problems and can't give him a reasonable price. They have to learn how to communicate with community better. And keep their promices at least sometimes. The post above about ''the new TL team" is so confusing. In any way we have to wait. As usual.

  16. 14 minutes ago, Nier said:

Yeah, right. Why not launch another kickstarter to pay this imaginary project team? Maybe, I'm really stupid, but tell me, why not choose Aroduc with his pretty much already done TL but instead basically tell him ''go to hell''? It's NOT the first time SP buys fan-translation. And Aroduc is not some teenager with basic knowledge of moonrunes. I don't think he is so greedy and stubborn to ignore any possible compromise. In his work he complains mostly about attitude of SP. Well, everybody does at this point. But it's Baldr Sky and that's why it's so sad...

That beats the necessary skill for any Nutaku fan: learning Japanese.  Not kidding.  I rewrote part of the in-game help section for Nutaku's Girls Kingdom, based on the Japanese wiki and my own independent research, because it was wholly inadequate and read like it was translated by an ESL student.  You'll notice because it's the part in English.

You know, it'd be funny if it wasn't... not... funny. But you're lucky to know Japanese, I'm still learning English.
