Deardrops is quite likely the worst VN I have ever played. Wait, scratch that. EVERYTHING from Overdrive is quite possible the worst VNs I have ever played.
With the exception of Dengeki Stryker, Overdrive titles are terrible. It's like watching 30+ hour low budget, soap opera episodes.

I only hate that they started this "experiment" on such good and well-know title. On the other hand we already have a best version, translated years ago and I have my physical copy no one will take from me. Just I already see how new readers would get much worse experience than I had, having scenes removed/images cropped and now even without voices... Looks like they intentionally want to ruin the experience user will get in order to sell that big... Already see post with complains "and this is in top ten of VNDB?? really???"... If dovac want money - why ruin good games? Create your own Sakura Clicker for 10$ and get your billions... I already thought, that this release would be a bad thing, but I never thought it would become even worse than I thought it would be...

Did I told already that I really hate how they did widescreen? Most of event graphics lost part of head (visible clearly in Gonzou case on screenshots), all close-ups would look quite bad in this case (like part of eye not fitting the screen or headless persons or legless guys) - take for example this image for reference (there is much more similar ones, just that's the only one which does not affect the story) - http://psp4real.ru/_tr/ev_other_01.png

What would be? Half-headless mobsters or chairless table?

Anyway, I have my physical box first press release (something with huge artbook for all Akabesoft2 titles), so would not buy that, for sure. Dunno why create widescreen mode this way. For example Regista created PSP port of 4:3 widescreen, and allowed player to scroll image top/bottom/etc., to see whole picture. This is example of how I would like to see that. But... You know what Sekai would do, right?

I am not a child to be afraid of someone coming and seeing me in the middle of h-scene

So I can say I always prefer to play VN with h-scenes (since it started long time ago, with old games from PC-98 like Three Sisters Story, Nocturnal Illusion, Divi-Dead and stuff like that, which had quite a bit of h-scenes). Maybe it is just me, but really, playing for 50 hours, reading tons of things about affections/puns about sex/etc. and do not seeing any sex at all (perfect example is that Chaos;Head) is utterly boring.

H-scenes give at least some relief to the long and boring story (like Ever17 which was truly repetitve as hell and h-scenes along that 30-hours repetitive marathon would help. But no luck) and indeed, how much stories are really that great? Not much, I would say, and at least 40 or even more % of their charm they get from graphic side. So by removing h-scenes you just make less appeal, as part of charm disappears.

And I do not like myself that latest tendency having very long scenes with lot of "sluuuurps".and stuff. I like the old type of h-scenes, where there is 1-2 images and dunno, 10-15 phrases, not that usual detailed description about who, where and how much times did So scenes like in Yu-No, Divi-Dead and other oldies - most preferable.

This is Rin's prologue, it always starts this way, before you finish prologue. After you finish prologue it will start showing title screen with menu.

I'm sure Rooke is a diehard fan of Nekopara and Sunrider Academy.  The writing in Nekopara definitely blew him away and caused him to demand more from VNs like fault milestone.

Boku no Hitori Sensou / My own private war - latest VN from Looseboy - scenario writer for Devil on a G-String and Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo. You can read review by Clephas here.

What is done so far: well, I "adapted" game for unicode, so no need to change your locale anymore. Then, I changed the output from that vertical to normal horizontal (you can see in the image below), also translated top menu and MOST of it ALL, lo and behold - PROLOGUE (1st part of it) in GLORIOUS GOOGLE TRANSLATE!!! Obv I can do more, fix imperfections like word wrapping, change border, other stuff, but... no reason for that right now

How to use - just download patch and put in the installation directory, where you have wa.exe, this will do the trick!

    Enjoy!

Btw, if someone REALLY want to translate the game - then I need translator and editor and maybe image editor, if first two would be found. Feel free to contact me.

No way to do it inside the game, that was intentionally done for prologue part. Had to change the script code for that. You can anyway download patch, as it "translates" only first 5 minutes in prologue, so all other text would be in japanese in horizontal mode.

Actually, if there were enough market, I am sure on Speccy would be great VNs. As even having its mind-blowing screen architecture, people really able to produce very pretty images.

Here are some examples of my personal favorites:

And there is more than 2000 of actual text adventure games on it! So if VNs have migrated from Japan in Speccy era... Well, never mind.

Considering Shakespeare was responsible for many of the idioms we use in English today, I believe you're not doing him justice. He was a master of imagery:

Furthermore good prose is necessary for an interesting story, prose relating to how a story and the relevant images are delivered to the audience, obviously if the prose is terrible than imagery presented would be substandard and/or the reader will be continuously jolted out of the story. Most fan-translations contain basic style errors and a weak vocabulary, the weak vocabulary contributes to either vague images presented OR a bloated and wordy script. It also means that those with a greater vocabulary will wrinkle their nose and be tempted to walk away. The basic style errors makes things read awkwardly and/or lessens the impact and/or relates to how well/badly you manage to capture the original author's style (if that was your primary intent.)

That being said, fan-translations are delivered to us for free so one can't complain. I do expect a little more from the stuff we're forking $50 out for, though.

Well, if try to read them with a translator tool, original text is usually not much better. So yes, this depend on translator, but seems also greatly depend on the original writer too (as unskilled translator usually want to be maximally faithful to the original text, which results in... well...)

At least I have this.impression. But also agree, that a really good translator (I could remember of this guy) could make even rather dull text to shine.

Unfortunately this does not change the fact that prose of 98% translated VNs looks like work of high-schooler... And this annoys as hell. As I even cannot recommend virtually anything, as my friends read Tolstoy, Shakespeare, Marquez, Vonnegut, Hemingway and trying to read so-called "prose" in VNs they tell "what is this? you really find such text decent enough? ah, i got it, you're just a visual whore who want to see boobs in center of the screen and in CG scenes, that's why you like that."

I do not know, will someday a decent VN get a decent translation or not...

Lot of VNs have just really awful writing and barely unreadable (looks like a person who never know how to write decided to create a VN).

Never7, Ever17, virtually all Uchikoshi before 999 are pain to read.
Same goes to Tsukihime (oh, I would gladly remove 50% of text from that VN to make it less repetitive with lexicon of 10-year old).

Best writing I read so far (I read about 50 from top 100 novels in English by VNDB rating) was in Sharin no Kuni and G-Senjou no Maou and (to some extent) in 999. Most likely this is because of the translator's vocabulary (the_noob_avenger is best!), but also is hugely depend on source material...

All other I read in translations are so simplified and boned to the ground that it was like a kids book...
