    I kind of intended to do this in my old introduction thread, but I guess it should have it's own topic since I think it's kind of special (to me, to a certain someone, who exactly you'll know in just a second.
     
    The last post of my introduction thread was by Naomi, its contents couldn't be any more relevant right now, in an incredibly funny, sweet and ironic way:
     
      I really want to share something with everyone; It's part continuation, part reboot of my introduction thread. So many things have went down and changed ever since I wrote the opening post, the most noticable part of it being that Aaeru has effectively left, or at least it feels like it. For a while - remember this happened right after the Fuwapocalypse - it really took the wind out of my sails. I wanted to quit right then because Aaeru's feedback has always been the thing that kept me going, even though we often imagined things in different ways, she always appreciated my input or my approach to things.   That's where the support from everyone came in: Two groups of very close friends, most of which I already mentioned in my original post (especially Tay, who has been an amazing colleague and friend), but also a lot of new people someone very special and dear to me brought in: Naomi. We've been friends pretty much ever since I joined the IRC and we happened to come in contact with each other. We've gone through an immense amount of bullshit happening to both of us, like the drama surrounding the IRC and some issues when she first got promoted to a moderator, but we've pretty much stuck through those and grown closer over it - a lot closer.   All the pain and hard work we went through paid out in the end, and Naomi and I are going to meet up during her spring break, as kind of a last confirmation that we work out in person as well - even though I don't have any doubts about that with how wonderful everthing about her is - and we're planning on living together after she graduates high school at the latest with how my job possibilities are laid out - I'm glad (and kind of embarassed) to announce that we might be the first couple meeting up on the wonderful site.   In light of all this I think the right subtitle for my thread should probably be more like this nowadays: How Fuwanovel continuously keeps saving and brightening my life. Thank you for reading this, and thank the wonderful girl that's at my side now - we went through so much, so all this feels like the kind of ending/beginning both of us have always hoped for. I love you with all my heart, Naomi.     P.S.: Yep, the crazy autist kids on Fuwanovel are falling in love with each other now. Don't bother commenting if you don't have anything to say on the matter:

    Did you finish the Fate route yet, or are you still playing?  The route itself addresses (in part) your frustration.  Saber and Shirou have to grow (a lot) after that first h-scene, and their relationship (both as master/servant (non-romantic), and as lovers) grows substantially.
     
    One thing we have in common is we found strong female leads to be one of the most appealing aspects of the game.  As you continue in the Fate route (as well as in UBW and HF), I think you'll find (as did I) that relationship issues (like having Rin in the first h-scene) is part of a running commentary on war, and not because the story is minimizing the women or their relationships. The authors work hard to put redeeming, intimate scenes later in the arcs, but use early content to stress the dire circumstances of the HGW. (I'm not a fan of h-scenes, and a lot of people hate F/SN's h-scenes, but the narrative intent is there)
     
    My advice is to not get discouraged.  I lean pretty heavily towards feminism, and while F/SN has its problems, Shirou and Saber do grow to have a quality relationship.  Don't give up on them yet.

    Here are the rest of my impressions from the demo.  
     
    Specific thoughts Looping sound effects are often grating.  Longer effect loops with lower volumes will help.  For things like this, or adding more lines to dialog boxes (with auto-fitting/scaling, etc.) you can find tutorials on lemmasoft or in the Ren’py support documents.   A chronic issue in the demo was the need for less telling and more showing.  When you talk about the mindstorm being overwhelming, we’re informed of the fact but not introduced to the sounds and sights and memories which are actually overloading the narrator.  Instead of telling us (the readers) that the character is overwhelmed by the details, we (the readers) need to ourselves be overwhelmed by it!  A random example from the start: show us why the memory is overwhelming (ex: “The memories are too real and there’s too much to them.  It’s too much to remember every raindrop falling on my coat.  It’s too much to remember the number of ripples racing across the puddle under my feet.  My senses strain and buckle under the load of the perfect memory. // The sound of the rain becomes a roar as my vision goes white.  I can’t process it all.  The memories are too many, too perfect…”)  Another example of telling and not giving us more (or showing): “That piece of writing was key in defining who I am now.”  These statements could be expanded upon to give real narrative depth, insight into the narrator.  Right now they’re all over the place, which means there’s a lot of chances to make the story even better.   Add more sentences to each dialog box (more sentences per click). (Last time I bring this one up, promise!)   “And just like that, it’s over.” <--  Stop the sound effects at this screen.  The rain effect goes on too long.   THE INTRO MOVIE IS AWESOME!!!    What is the sound effect which kicks in post-intro movie? It sounds like rustling and it’s endlessly looping.  It sounds very distracting.  Is it the sound of rain on the roof?   Keeping the narrator’s name “???” for a while at the start of the game was an interesting choice.  Why did you decide to do it that way?   The phone conversation early in the game is stiff and could probably be cut in half with editing.  Make sure the Kyousuke’s personality is firm before finalizing the dialog: right now I can’t tell what he’s like (he’s simultaneously friendly-abusive, friendly-caring, and extremely formal).  This is further complicated by Aoki calling him a “cretin”, etc.  Make their relationship ultra-clear from the get-go.   Why is the word “Mindstorm” in quotes in much of the early dialog?  You already introduced it to us at the start.  Now it’s a proper noun and plot point which we know about, so it can be left on its own.  (Update: all of a sudden the quotes went away.  Maybe it just needs to be edited out of the earlier lines)   The music is very nice!  (except maybe for the overly carnival like parts : ))   Aoki’s voice is hard to track.  Is there a reason his lines are stiff? “Why are you at the mercy of this downpour?”, the line about an “auspicious occasion” to recite a poem, etc.   I think I’m starting to understand your use of quotes.  “Mindstorm”.  “Masterkey”.  You use quotes to highlight your fiction’s jargon, right?  I think you might be better served by making them a different color (PURPLE!!) than putting them in quotes.   The explanatory sequences – where the backgrounds dim and text is centered – are very helpful.  If anything, use more of them so you don’t feel the need to sneak worldbuilding into the dialog (where it comes across as out-of-place).   I liked having a sound effect announce the decision points.  Very nice touch!   I’d suggest cleaning up the UI a little when you use character portraits next to their dialog.   Right now the face images are layered transparently over the “Violet Hill” image on the far-left.    AaAH! My ears!  Have that ringing/screeching sound effect fade in and out (a few times if absolutely necessary – don’t let it loop.  : )  I almost died, there.), having it ring continuously made me want to furiously click through the dialog until it stopped.   Sasaski’s dialog was a little hard for me to swallow (thankfully she gets great music).  It was often awkwardly formal (and not in an in-character sort of way) (ex: “That’s right young sir, you could tell?”, followed by a lot of informal language, like “Umm…” etc.).  I know this is done purposefully (you have a line pointing this out: “She’s acting strange… now she’s suddenly informal.”), but it doesn’t come across that way yet.  If the dialog is tightened up (and grammar fixed), you could show her insecurity without needing to point it out.  (… but, really, kill the “young sir” line.  She’s young herself, and other polite references would work just as well in the situation)  The characterization confusion continues later with phrasings like “Eh? But prez!”   Aoki’s conversation with Sasaki was confusing.  He’s warm, friendly, making a friend.  That grates with the antisocial, conflicted Aoki who called the friend encouraging him to be social a “cretin”.     Minamoto’s music really grew on me.  It’s great for her early characterization.  Will it change as we get to know her better?   The switching of the art club presidency was odd.  Do it later in the game (such as after Aoki manages to get Kanade in).  It really doesn’t make coming at this point (and the line from Minamoto, “There’s no one more capable than you.” was out of place, out of character, and very odd).  Minamoto has reasons for saying so (which makes the comment seem less out of place in retrospect), but the timing is off.  Later in the game (even just shortly after), such as in the first club meeting or after Aoki displays his talent to them (or as a reward for getting a 4th member) makes more narrative sense.     Overall Impressions: Characterization – Needs to be tightened up.  A lot.  I’d suggest working extra hard to find each character’s personality and voice, and then redrafting the dialog to be consistent with the characters.  Of all the characters, Minamoto was done best, but even she needs a lot of work in the second half of the demo.  She keeps a relatively stable personality across most of the first half of the story up until the phone call to her late at night (which had a lot of promise, but her characterization quickly got loose and out of hand. I liked having her show excitement (read: more than a cool/cryptic side), but she quickly started speaking in ways outside the personality you’d developed for her.  That phone call marked the point of change away from her solid personality).     Intro Movie – Extremely good.  I’d use it as quickly as possible, in fact.  The intro to the Mindstorm is a good idea (but it should be made much shorter and more concise and more vivid (show not tell!)), but it should be notable and quick and quickly lead to the movie.  The movie is so good that it promises a quality product.  It may make up for a slightly cryptic intro and keep the reader going.   Dialog – Stiff, verbose but promising.  If it was redrafted to be consistent with personalities and the grammar was cleaned up, I’d say it would come across much better.  Also, I think you could cut all the conversations in half by making them concise and clear, and the game would really benefit from it.   Sound effects – need to be volume-adjusted, and many need their loops to be adjusted.  Also, some are confusing.   Pacing – Slow it down.  Introduce the major characters before introducing the first plot problem (art club members).  Right now the narrative feels washed out:  Meet girl A, meet girl B, art club, need one more girl, meet girl C, assume girl C  will be the fourth member = easy solution, etc..   And, if I haven’t already said it enough, SHOW NOT TELL!  You’ve got an interesting cast of characters.  As a reader, I don’t want to be informed about plot developments, I want to watch them.  Also, that’ll give you more opportunities to concisely and creatively reveal characters (as opposed to the voice of Aoki/God simply instructing us).     I’ll look forward to seeing more of the game.  Good luck, you can do it!

    Let me preface this by saying that I've done a lot of writing and have taught a few writing classes, and so my critiques are coming as a fellow writer, and not necessarily just as a reader.  I tried to include helpful criticism (such as my immediate technical difficulties and my impressions as a reader after the first 60 seconds of starting the game (post-disclaimers)).  These have always been useful metrics for me as a writer, and I hope they'll be useful to you.  
     
    I won't have time to finish the full demo right this minute, but I'll post again with my overall thoughts once I've finished the demo.
     
    In any case, I'm looking forward to following your project!
     

     
    Tested on Win7 desktop and Win8 Surface Pro 2.
      Technical problem right away: When I first booted up the program the game window opened up to a size of 1920x1080p.  That meant that most of the game was skewed off screen, and it took me a second to realize that I could resize the window to my liking.  I mention this because Ren’py has some cool functions to set a default window size when a user first opens the program.  My suggestion would be to choose a smaller default window size and include a note during an intro sequence that the window can be resized.  (the 1920x1080p window size was linked to my PC's resolution)   Technical suggestion: Include the ability to resize text.  On some monitors – like my Surface 2 Pro tablet/computer – the text is extremely small and hard to read.  A lot of VNers are playing VNs on PC tablets these days.     First 60 seconds impressions The title screen is beautiful.   The dripping sound effect would sound better if the individual drip sounds were spread much further apart.  It rapidly got annoying (for lack of a better word).   In the first 60 seconds I was introduced to what will be a key narrative plot point: the “mindstorm” (good!), but its description was convoluted and I have no idea why it's important or where this story is going (not so good).  In other words:  The writing didn’t offer an immediate hook and failed to grip me.   Sentences felt convoluted most of the time and need a lot of editing for grammar. That said, it was accentuated with a few fantastic and insightful sentences (ex: “I’m afraid to be alone with myself.”) <-- These sorts of sentences are vivid, use active voice, and were insightful into the character.   Sentence spacing (or whatever term you want to use for how many sentences appear per-click) was distracting. I think every sentence of my 60-second-impression required its own click and stood naked on its own dialog screen.  A lot of the sentences would be better if grouped together (one example would be: “Not because of any foreign feeling or my warped awareness, but because there is nowhere [for me] to go. I cannot hide from myself.” <--- Note, I fixed some grammar in that example.)        If I were to guess what the rest of the game will be like based on my first 60 seconds: I’d guess: It’ll have an interesting but depressing plot focused around the psychological phenomenon “mindstorm”.  The writing will be serviceable but will need a lot of grammar revision.  The protagonist will be a psychologically frayed.       Reading that over, I know it sounds critical.  I'll post as soon as I can finish the demo about my overall impressions.  I hope you'll put my suggestions aside and focus on the metrics I provided: the "If I were to guess what the rest of the game will be like based on my first 60 seconds" section at the end has always helped me as a writer.     EDIT: Also, I was trying to post a comment on your website and the wordpress login is very strange.  Could you fix it to accept wordpress users, and not just wordpress.com blogs?

    My favorite genre, as most of you probably know, is chuuni.  Chuuni is a genre where the protagonist is generally at the center of events, able to effect those events, and the story is generally filled with melodramatic plot and spoken lines, meant to be taken absolutely seriously.  An example of chuuni anime, for example, would be Fate/Zero or Code Geass (to give you an idea of what to look for).  Chuuni comes from the word 'chuunibyou', which is a common stage of development for teenagers, when they desperately want to believe they are more than they are and sometimes even convince themselves they are more than they are.  Many people who get addicted to fantasy and science fiction tend to get addicted during this stage of their lives, and it is also a stage of life that people generally look back on with embarrassment once they get over it.  This is the reason why the Japanese stuck 'byou' onto the end of the word, which has the same kanji as the one for disease, lol. 
     
    For those who simply enjoy fantasy and melodrama for the wild ride it can give, chuuni is pretty much the ultimate genre.  Chuuni also tends to tackle philosophical issues that get left by the roadside as people mature, simply because people start thinking that it is somehow embarrassing or pretentious to consider such issues as if they were the first person to do so ever.  Not to mention that many of the best writers in the otaku industry write chuuni VNs, light novels, and manga.  This is because it is a genre, similar to the ero genre, which simply has none of the limits that other genres tend to put on themselves.

    Understand, I'm mostly listing all of these to give you a sense of just how wide the chuuni genre is.  While games like Comyu, Tsukihime, and FSN are most commonly labeled as such, games such as Sharin no Kuni and G-Senjou can be included for their degrees of melodrama, complex plot twists and turn-arounds, and attempts at hedge philosophy.  This should also tell you that a lot of translators are hidden chuuni fans, to one degree or another.  If nothing else, chuuni games are full of content that is well-considered and thought out, which tends to attract those with the passion and interest for translation.  To an extent, games like Hoshizora no Memoria also have chuuni elements, albeit not strongly enough to consider them primarily as chuuni games.

    There are a few genres that chuuni is almost completely incompatible with, such as 'original' or pure moege, but to make a good story, with decent drama, it is almost impossible to avoid putting something with chuuni elements in it.  The truest sign of chuuni influence is melodrama, after all.  Even the nakige genre has chuuni influences, as can be seen in Clannad and Air, (the reincarnation issues in Air, and the general melodramatic emotion-pulling that made Clannad so popular).  For the fun of it, try picking up chuuni elements in your favorite anime and video games.  Don't bother with jrpgs though, since those things are mostly straight chuuni, lol.

    Summary
    A spin-off of the popular Toradora Anime.
    Unlike in the original story, this time Takasu Ryuuji finds himself in a hospital bed. Confused and dizzy he's suddenly greeted by a short girl who calls him by a strange name. Is this his name? Who is this girl? It's soon after that the shocking truth comes to the surface. Amnesia. Poor Ryuuji suffered an accident after christmas eve and forgot everything about his past, his friends, his likes, his relationships, even his own name. 
    As he leaves the hospital he meets up with all sorts of people who seem to be acquainted with him. A beautiful blonde girl who apparently lives with him. His best friends Kitamura and Minori. The popular model Kawashima Ami and even his pet parakeet Inko-chan. These people hold all of Ryuuji's memories and they are the key to unlocking his past.
    What will Ryuuji do? Will he be able to recover all of his past? An eventful journey awaits him as new year approaches and the new school semester comes closer by the day. Will he be able to remember everything before school starts? And if he does will anything in his new life change? It's all up to you to you decide.
     Ending Guideline / Suggested Route Order
    This novel has an enforced playing order so you will not be able to avoid bad endings straight away.
    Each ending is graded at the end of the game by Yuri, she'll score it from the worst possible (50 points) to the best possible (100 points).
    There's a lot of dialog choices that are only available if you pick certain items while cleaning/talking.
    The common route always branches at the exact same point and you'll get a different scenario based on the choices you made.
    The game is divided into 3 scenarios: Kitamura & Kano, Courage Test and Solution.
    Within each scenario you have several character routes that you can get into.
    This is an ending guide not a full walkthrough
    Following this entire guide will get you around 90% completition of the game.
    Why not 100%? There's numerous ways of getting into the same ending and each of those counts as a percentage of the game. Every single choice, item and path is a percetange. My goal here is to give you all the endings not every single path in the game.
    There is a list at the end with every single item if you want to know where to find a specific one. You can view your items in the extras option.
    All 21 endings in the game are listed below.
    If you want to complete the game 100% you can try and search for new paths by pressing L during dialogs in order to see the route diagram. 
    Make different choices, pick up all the items you can by cleaning and talking and see if you can go in all the paths.

    I was going for something more subtle and simple, an icon that anyone who knows this site would recognise instantly, also something you can scale down to put into signatures etc. Considered just the 4 fuwacolour stripes + white silhouette of Aaeru in the centre, turned out difficult to make (and not as recognisable) - someone with better skills could try this. Or something like Aaeru-ism...?
    I started it but this is a community thing, so it's even better to see everyone joining in and continuing it. The +Aaeru versions are great, thanks and keep up the creativity everyone!

    Chances are, if you read VN, at some point you'll get interested in learning Japanese. This thread will NOT tell you how to learn japanese, I'm not qualified for that. This is a compilation of useful resources you might need, put together by helpful members and myself.

    If you know absolutely nothing about the language, I recommend you to read a bit about it before. Read some wikipedia pages and the introductions of various guides. The best way to approach things is probably to try out a bit of everything and see what works for you.

    Here are the categories of resources presented:

    Learning methods
    Those hardly consist of rigid guides that'll take you all the way, but they might help to give you an idea on how to approach learning the language. Don't spend too much time looking for methods, you'll most likely end up doing things in a different way anyway. 
    Tae Kim's complete guide to japanese (everything is not complete yet)
    Nukemarine's Suggested Guide for Beginners "It's a guide on how to learn japanese by plowing through anki cards in a effective manner. It's made by a community member at Koohi forums. (I'd like to mention you can learn vocab very fast with this method and keep it in memory. But you learn without a lot of context, which has its negative sides.)" (Bolverk)

    Useful softwares
    Those are basic tools you'll almost certainly need, or at least try out, in your learning of japanese.

    Google IME: Allows you to type in Japanese. Click this link, click the big blue button, install: you can now switch your typing mode to japanese.
    Rikaichan: Firefox app that gives you a dictionary entry for a word by simply hovering over it. Extremely useful. Also exists for Chrome.

    Anki: A flash card software with a built-in algorithm for learning efficiency. Exists on Android and iOS too. (Regular hand-written flash-cards can be a useful tool too). Use shared decks to find vocab/kanji pre-made decks.

    Note about Anki: the use of Anki is advocated as necessary by some and deemed completely useless by others. Starting out with basic vocab/kanji grinding will probably help you ease into practice material, however learning tons of words, or worse even tons of kanji out of context is not a good idea. It's up to you to find out whether you want to use Anki (and whether you can).
    ITH, TA, Mecab, Jparser: ITH is a text hooker that'll extract the text from, say, a VN for you. Translation Aggregator will pass said text through parsers and dictionaries. Extremely useful to practice on VNs.
    Some tips and other softs for ITH here
    Chiitrans: a useful alternative to ITH/TA. Same principle. Read the tuto for more details.
    Visual Novel Reader: Another alternative to ITH/TA.

    Note about text hookers: it might seem obvious but do NOT use machine translations with your text hookers. You won't learn anything from the garbage it feeds you and you won't even actually understand what's going on, whether you think you do or not.
    It is also not a very good idea to rely on parsers for grammar purposes. Parsers are far from perfect. They certainly can't replace a grammar resource and basic googling.
    Think of text hookers as crutches you use until you become able to read without constantly looking up vocabulary. It is also a good idea to switch to japanese-japanese dictionaries as soon as you can - only they will give you the nuances of the words, and they're also much less flawed than existing free j-e dictionaries.   

    Kanji & Kana
    Learning the hiragana and katakana should be about the first thing you do. It's not very long or difficult. Becoming accustomed to reading them is longer but it eventually comes.
    Kanjis are probably the biggest psychological barrier for japanese learners. I don't have a magical method to suggest, but do tell yourself it's really not that hard if you stop thinking too hard about it and trying to find the best, most optimized method for learning them. Try to learn the basic ones, see where you can get, and start practicing on reading as soon as you can.

    RealKana: This is just an example among others of ways to learn the kana. It's the first thing you should do anyway, and it's not hard or long.
    Heisig's Remember the Kanji: A method for learning kanji through memo stories, by association with an english keyword. Good for starters, probably won't get you through the whole kanji learning though. See Tay's guide and this website too.
    Kanjidamage: Learning the kanjis through radicals and memo sentences. I'm not a fan of his method, but it has some interesting information in the introduction and on some kanjis.

    Grammar
    Basic grammar:
    Tae Kim's guide: The most popular (and free!) guide on the internet. Rather compact, has all the essential grammar with good explanations and examples. A must.
    Genki: To take things more slowly, or have a different view on points you didn't get. (No links for that one yet, it's not free, sorry)
    Nihongomori: this is a youtube channel with videos explaining grammar, but also vocab and other misc things, done by native speakers (in english for the basics, japanese later). It goes from basic grammar (JLPT N5-N4 level) up to finer points (N2-N1 level) so it actually covers intermediate/advanced grammar too. The videos are pretty fun and well done, if you like the video media it might work good for you.
    More advanced grammar:
    Imabi: Lots of in-depth explanations about various grammar subjects. Not recommended for pure beginners and not written as a guide.
    If you want to go further than that, you'll need to go into japanese grammar books. Don't forget a simple research on the internet can give you lots of explanations about pretty much anything anyway.
    Advanced grammar:
    If you want to go further into grammar than that (for example if you want to read 古典 and such), you'll probably need to go into japanese grammar textbooks.
    This guide is approved as being really good. (Change the encoding of the page to Japanese EUC-JP for it to display correctly)
    This page could be useful too.
    Feel free to do your own research!
    Others:
    A grammar cheat sheet. Not for beginners, obviously.
    Nihongoresources: A grammar guide. Never tried it.

    Practice Material

    General advice: Try to avoid material based on comedy (because you need a good enough knowledge to get the jokes), or that rely heavily on slang or local dialect. Also, avoid things that have too much technical vocabulary (hard sci-fi) or chuuni stuff with abstract concepts and archaic kanjis.

    Chokochoko: Some practice texts (articles on various stuff), ranked by JLPT difficulty.
    Children's tales: easy place to start.
    Japanese subtitles for lots of anime.
    VNs in japanese:
     *Relatively easy language for a story-focused VN.
     *List of VN for beginners, with two levels of difficulty.
     *A big list of Visual novels to read if you are confident enough (~JPTL N2).

    I won't point you out to raw mangas, of course, but if you can find high enough quality scans (or can afford to import them) it's obviously a great way to practice. Every shoujo and shonen manga have furiganas on every kanjis. Seinen/josei may not have them, but it doesn't mean they're necessarily more difficult.
    Dictionaries, vocabulary resources
    Note: Japanese-english dictionaries (the free ones you'll find on the internet) are pretty much all based on Edict. Of course, as a beginner you have to use j-e dictionaries, but 1) edict is far from perfect 2) j-e dictionaries are inherently limited anyway: only japanese dictionaries will give you the right nuance (and they're rather excellent). So as soon as you can, switch to japanese dictionaries. The jump is not easy but it's necessary, especially if you intend to read VNs with a higher level of language.
    Overall, the internet is your friend! A simple search will often yield whatever you're looking for. Finding your way, especially in japanese websites, is the most useful skill you can develop (although once again you need to reach a certain level of confidence first).  
    Jisho: Jap/eng dictionary.
    Tangorin: Same thing.
    WWWJDIC Dictionary site.
    Japanese online dictionary. Requires good enough knowledge of japanese to be used.
    Slang dictionary. Same as above.
    Writing recognition: Tries to find a kanji directly written with your mouse.
    Tanos: Various JLPT-related resources: vocabulary and kanji lists, etc.

    Hello Everybody,   Two weeks ago I held a little shindig on Skype to outline site priorities and projects, as well as take questions from site members about Fuwanovel’s future.  It was a little unusual, but it was a blast to get together.  Thanks to everybody who participated.  Shortly after that little meet-up, I got very sick, and then many problems arose in my graduate school applications as well as in my university.  It’s taken me a long time to get back on my feet, so as always, thanks for being patient with me (especially when you send me PMs and I don’t get back to you very quickly -- I promise I’m not ignoring them!) (well… except for Steve’s D&D PM.  Totally ignoring that one ).     I’ll be available intermittently until December 18th, and back full-time thereafter.   This post is meant to convey the gist and information I shared in the Skype call.  Let me know if you have questions.       Tay’s State of the Union – Winter 2013 The main purpose of this post is to explain how Fuwanovel will function while I’m filling in for Aaeru. I don’t know how I’ll be doing so, but I suspect it’ll go on for sufficient time that it makes sense for me to lay out a road map.  The projects/goals listed below are meant as global to-dos over the next few months (read: not a sprint. We shouldn’t kill ourselves to take care of these items ASAP – it’s important to keep balance and enjoy the holidays/time off of school/etc.)   First, a review of our major projects/products.  There are five core projects associated with Fuwanovel, and I added a sixth during the skype call: Games and game uploads Front site Forums Visual Novel Aer blog Social Media (NEW) Introduction to Visual Novels Kit   In the call I assigned a “project head” to each project: someone who has been involved with the project for a while and who will be responsible for: overseeing the project’s progress, providing updates on the Fuwanovel Improvement Board, posting ways members can help with their project on the Improvement Board, and recruiting people to help them.   I also laid out a road map for each of the projects.  All of this new information is displayed below:   Games and Game Uploads Project Head: Kendjin Road Map: Organize seedbox (no small matter) Update old torrents (especially those with the old piracy video, or which need new patches) Brainstorm a good system by which people can suggest new games, and look into ways that members could help upload them Prioritize games which should be added next, and add them   Front Site Project Head: Nayleen Road Map: We have lots of proposed changes.  Nayleen and Tay need to powwow and make priorities   Visual Novel Aer Blog Project Head: Tay Road Map: Lots of proposed work, but Tay needs to talk with Aaeru first   Forums Project Head: Forums Staff (moderators) Road Map: (largely keep on carrying on) Continuing to moderate Discussion of specific issues to be handled on staff forums  Do a board-wide cleanup (each section needs to be combed for topic moves, general cleanup, merges, unanswered questions, etc.)   Social Media Twitter -> We don’t have access right now. Facebook Project Head: Naomi Road Map: We’ve seen a lot of success.  Good job to everybody involved and thank you for working so hard.  We’ve over 6,500 likes! We have almost hit 7000 likes! Naomi has come up with a plan to increase facebook likes.  She’s still ironing out some details, but part of the Facebook Project Head job will be to itemize all the to-dos, and seek out help for making them happen. Share the workload!     New Project: The Introduction to Visual Novels Kit Project Head: Tay We’re going to develop a product that you can download, put on a DVD or thumb drive, and hand to a friend. We’ll make an all-ages version, and one with some 18+ content. It will contain:  A PDF Introduction to Visual novels  3 VNs of different types which are good intro VNs (Planetarian, Katawa Shoujo, Clannad, etc.)  A Fuwanovel Memory book – a second document where people write why they like VNs, how VNs have helped them in life, their favorite games, etc.    PDF Introduction to Visual novels Explain the genre  Introduce the 3 games (what they’re like, their characters, plot, etc. -- help them decide on which to play first) Game walkthroughs for each of the 3 games (for those concerned: we'll include a note about the philosophical qualms some have with walkthroughs worry not)  Recommendations for each type of game ("If you like Fate/Stay Night, you should try...") Explain concepts like Japanese Locale, patching, the translation process, different categories of VNs, Japanese Vocab (senpai!) Tell where people can find VNs – where buy legally and where obtain non-licensed games Not JUST a Fuwanovel product, though we’ll clearly be associated    Thus, there will be three sub-projects to making this happen:  Intro to VNs PDF  Fuwanovel Memory Book PDF  Choosing the 3 games  All of this will need to fit on a thumb drive and/or DVD for easily spreading the Gospel.    The VN community at large can be toxic and sick. Fuwanovel’s different. We’re friendly, and approachable.     Hello Everybody,   Two weeks ago I held a little shindig on Skype to outline site priorities and projects, as well as take questions from site members about Fuwanovel’s future.  It was a little unusual, but it was a blast to get together.  Thanks to everybody who participated.  Shortly after that little meet-up, I got very sick, and then many problems arose in my graduate school applications as well as in my university.  It’s taken me a long time to get back on my feet, so as always, thanks for being patient with me (especially when you send me PMs and I don’t get back to you very quickly -- I promise I’m not ignoring them!) (well… except for Steve’s D&D PM.  Totally ignoring that one ).     I’ll be available intermittently until December 18th, and back full-time thereafter.   This post is meant to convey the gist and information I shared in the Skype call.  Let me know if you have questions.       Tay’s State of the Union – Winter 2013 The main purpose of this post is to explain how Fuwanovel will function while I’m filling in for Aaeru. I don’t know how I’ll be doing so, but I suspect it’ll go on for sufficient time that it makes sense for me to lay out a road map.  The projects/goals listed below are meant as global to-dos over the next few months (read: not a sprint. We shouldn’t kill ourselves to take care of these items ASAP – it’s important to keep balance and enjoy the holidays/time off of school/etc.)   First, a review of our major projects/products.  There are five core projects associated with Fuwanovel, and I added a sixth during the skype call: Games and game uploads Front site Forums Visual Novel Aer blog Social Media (NEW) Introduction to Visual Novels Kit   In the call I assigned a “project head” to each project: someone who has been involved with the project for a while and who will be responsible for: overseeing the project’s progress, providing updates on the Fuwanovel Improvement Board, posting ways members can help with their project on the Improvement Board, and recruiting people to help them.   I also laid out a road map for each of the projects.  All of this new information is displayed below:   Games and Game Uploads Project Head: Kendjin Road Map: Organize seedbox (no small matter) Update old torrents (especially those with the old piracy video, or which need new patches) Brainstorm a good system by which people can suggest new games, and look into ways that members could help upload them Prioritize games which should be added next, and add them   Front Site Project Head: Nayleen Road Map: We have lots of proposed changes.  Nayleen and Tay need to powwow and make priorities   Visual Novel Aer Blog Project Head: Tay Road Map: Lots of proposed work, but Tay needs to talk with Aaeru first   Forums Project Head: Forums Staff (moderators) Road Map: (largely keep on carrying on) Continuing to moderate Discussion of specific issues to be handled on staff forums  Do a board-wide cleanup (each section needs to be combed for topic moves, general cleanup, merges, unanswered questions, etc.)   Social Media Twitter -> We don’t have access right now. Facebook Project Head: Naomi Road Map: We’ve seen a lot of success.  Good job to everybody involved and thank you for working so hard.  We’ve over 6,500 likes! We have almost hit 7000 likes! Naomi has come up with a plan to increase facebook likes.  She’s still ironing out some details, but part of the Facebook Project Head job will be to itemize all the to-dos, and seek out help for making them happen. Share the workload!     New Project: The Introduction to Visual Novels Kit Project Head: Tay We’re going to develop a product that you can download, put on a DVD or thumb drive, and hand to a friend. We’ll make an all-ages version, and one with some 18+ content. It will contain:  A PDF Introduction to Visual novels  3 VNs of different types which are good intro VNs (Planetarian, Katawa Shoujo, Clannad, etc.)  A Fuwanovel Memory book – a second document where people write why they like VNs, how VNs have helped them in life, their favorite games, etc.    PDF Introduction to Visual novels Explain the genre  Introduce the 3 games (what they’re like, their characters, plot, etc. -- help them decide on which to play first) Game walkthroughs for each of the 3 games (for those concerned: we'll include a note about the philosophical qualms some have with walkthroughs worry not)  Recommendations for each type of game ("If you like Fate/Stay Night, you should try...") Explain concepts like Japanese Locale, patching, the translation process, different categories of VNs, Japanese Vocab (senpai!) Tell where people can find VNs – where buy legally and where obtain non-licensed games Not JUST a Fuwanovel product, though we’ll clearly be associated    Thus, there will be three sub-projects to making this happen:  Intro to VNs PDF  Fuwanovel Memory Book PDF  Choosing the 3 games  All of this will need to fit on a thumb drive and/or DVD for easily spreading the Gospel.    The VN community at large can be toxic and sick. Fuwanovel’s different. We’re friendly, and approachable. We are the perfect place to introduce people to VNs.   If we do a good job, make a great product, and can spread it well, I believe this is something that will long-outlive Fuwanovel and make a huge difference in bolstering VN sharing.           Lastly, Thanks.* (*Taken from my speech notes) Everybody who made it out for the Skype chat, thank you.    Beato, Down, Demon Lord Harry Kinomoto, ilegend, Kendjin, Luch, Meru, RETransInternational, Steve, zhurai – for being amazing friends and staff-mates, for tirelessly working on the forums, and for all the good memories.    Kaguya for being amazing at special projects for the last forever. I ended up realizing that that’s not something we can ever do in the finished sense: we do it every day by being friendly, choosing to respect each other, and making a welcoming community.     I hadn’t planned on responding to this thread (more on this later), but I’ve since decided that I need to do so. I spent a lot of time thinking about my response, and I hope that the community will take a moment to listen to what I have to say. This is Batman’s thread, but in order to address what he’s offered us here, I need to start with a few words about me.



    I officially joined the forums just after the original site was hacked/trashed, and was able to participate in the rebuilding effort. That was well over a year ago, and I’ve seen the community go through several unique periods since then. I’ve seen a lot of people come and go, and the site has constantly grown, stretched and dreamed of bigger things. It’s been inspiring, sometimes stressful and heartbreaking, and at other times, it’s been all those things simultaneously. During the recent site outage (read: Fuwapocalypse), I realized that Fuwanovel means a lot to me, and has had a great influence in my life. I decided to start a project: “Tay’s History of Fuwanovel” – a chronicling of my time here in this community. Each chapter of the book is divided up into the names of community members. One of the chapters is named “Solidbatman”.

    Batman is one of my closest friends on Fuwanovel: someone who's opinion weighs as heavily as Ryoji’s – which is really saying something – and somebody I deeply respect. He’s my friend, and I hope that I’m his. I’ll be the first one to admit that Batman joined the staff – and became an admin – during some of the site’s most difficult chapters. Despite seeing the very ugliest that Fuwanovel has to offer, he’s been a constant force for cooperation, compromise, and respect. The word “character” comes to mind, here. “Integrity” is another good one.

    I am glad that Batman took the time to write this post. We do need to be friendlier to each other, and more patient and understanding when miscommunications and conflicts arise. Like Batman, I’ve seen the ugly corners of Fuwanovel’s history. They’re there. The staff forums chronicle some of them. Many others have happened off the forums. I’ve been there for most of them. I’ve tried to learn from them.

    The point I’d like to get across is pretty simple. We are each responsible for what Fuwanovel becomes. The way we act, re-act, react all determine what the community stands for.




    I hadn’t originally planned on responding to this post. Batman and I already know where we stand in relation to each other. However, the responses of many new members prompted me to respond to them. To new members, and to their concerns.

    Fuwanovel is changing, but it’s always been in the process of changing. Better than anyone, I can attest that the site and community have never stood still. As new people come into the community – especially from other VN sites which are known to have toxic rhetoric – we will be faced with a constant identity crisis. We will be constantly faced with the decision to be welcoming, friendly and respectful, or the opposite. As we go forward, we will have to make the conscious choice – every day – to be different.

    I am deeply grateful for Batman, and the dozens of other members, who face this choice with a determination to do the right thing. Let’s get along. Let’s play visual novels. Let’s have fun together.

    Since I'm a lazy fuck I'll need someone to look through that list to tell me which of those don't have any choices and I'll filter them out, but afterwards it's free sailing for you guys to focus on those games if you so choose.

    Oh, and I added all walkthroughs that were not yet linked to their games on the page, so that list is up-to-date. Keep up your great work, people!
