I think the sentencing was reasonable.

If canada stance is to per-emptively ban possession (of lolicon as well as CP), then they are merely enforcing that. (I  agree that possession of CP should be an offense, because possession encourages distribution and production.) It might have the defense's lawyers maneuverings (silly trial system), but the judge's sentencing seemed like it was made in consideration of the fact that he already has a fair chunk of his life ruined. (being forced to live separately from foster children, etc. It's a one-size-fits-all precaution, but probably with this type of risk, it's far too late after the fact; in addition, the public wouldn't tolerate the government not doing this if such an incident broke out.) The counselling is probably a good thing.

That being said, having let it be found by a student leading to being fired, is not so strange: the usb could have contained a number of other comprising details and still resultant in termination.

According to this recent article, ALL internet pornography is banned in Egypt.  Or at least it was in 2012.  Not sure how things changed with the revolution(s) and all.

Hahaha, I can say with confidence that you can do whatever you want on the internet in Egypt, no anywhere in the Middle East, and not really fear the government, mainly because they're just too dumb to make any working system for dealing with online crime. Just don't go showing off your porn to the officials' faces and you're ok.

Oh, and don't insult religion, cuz in that case they'll find you with speed and accuracy that'll make the FBI seem ourdated

^ what Babi said and yeah nothing blocked in the internet because it's pricey and costs lots of money according to the governement at least. So yeah u can access everything but ofc if u have porn with u , u will be arrested but then again the only solid proof is sex magazines and photos but as long as u keep them on your pc or mobile or whatever. Everything is good (plus our governement is too "busy" to meddle itself in such trivial matters so yeah even if someone does report me for holding porn, no one will come to even search me so my lolis collections are safe :makina: )

As long as there were pictures of real children, he got what he deserved. The punishment is certainly not a light one, though if they are stretching it and just making him look bad by saying (some may have been real), and they were all just hentai images then I think it's way too extreme, then again Canada is really against loli's and the like, and like mentioned earlier even high school girl hentai can get you in some deep water. Then again I don't live in Canada, and Indiana isn't as hard on hentai as most places, so I can't really relate to much of this. That being said, I have a hard time believing that a man who is a computer lab technician would carry around a USB containing illegal pornography, much less have it unprotected.

There's something incredibly fishy about the charges, not to mention schools, universities and labs like these are often fraught with interpersonal conflicts between various bodies. I wouldn't be amazed if someone actually did the dirty on him out of a personal grudge. The articles themselves don't reveal much on actual background of the man himself; whether he had similiar issues in the past, held interest in child pornography or was directly involved in other incidents. I can only say one thing - if he was really carrying real child porn on his personal pendrive, it was incredibly short-sighted of him to leave it in a place like this, regardless whether he had those pictures for his own enjoyment, or were they actually some research materials. If he's an actual pedophile, I can't really defend him, but if this was some sort of an hilarious misunderstanding, he has no one else to blame than himself.

Computer forensics officers discovered what appeared to be extensive child pornography on the drive — 20 images and nine videos, some of which were cartoon renderings of child porn.

Extensive? Twenty pictures and few movies, some of which were "cartoon" porn? Or perhaps all of them? Please. I'm so fed up with all that inapropriate lolicon and hentai nagging and modern pursuit of cheap sensation. I can't even comprehend how some cultures and societies - a lot of them belonging the the so called first world countries - find having their hidden sexual desires as something immoral and punishable. I'd only like for the govs to actually start taking care of REAL things that matter, instead trying to put the blame on fiction, because it's the easiest way to contribute to the general, public conviction that something is being done with these things, while in reality nothing had progressed for years.

I wonder whether goverments will actually begin to help those people, instead jailing them for possesion of child pornography and keep things as low-profile as possible, to avoid any unnecessary commotion within the mass media; no actual harm ever happens to anyone in such cases, it's really hard to discuss even whether the children in such pictures become direct victims, when there's no actual correlation between them and the accused. It's widely different with people who abuse those children and get involved in distribution of such materials and thus gaining financial profit. In this case though, they are clearly looking for scapegoats to shuffle everything under the rug as fast as possible, while the actual goverment and laws do nothing to protect those in need and remain incredibly sloppy in bringing the real culprits to justice.

In the end, the real wrongdoers will still continue to do what they did, someone who might have problems has his whole life (and not only his own life, but everyone around him) irremediably ruined and we - fans of media where boundaries between certain topics are draw thin become the real, actual issue for the rest of society and any constructive discussions often get derailed into nothingness.

Society itself is increasingly becoming more of a problem, rather than a useful feature.
