The effects(?) of darker sexual content

I think that just because someone enjoys the darker stuff in fiction doesn't necessarily mean they'd enjoy - or crave it - in real life as well. In the end it's just fantasy, and the weirder stuff in particular is attractive probably exactly for that reason. I did read some of the stuff out of curiosity (namely euphoria), but I just found it either disturbing or weirdly hilarious, so I guess I can't really add to this discussion much. That said, I do enjoy some weird fetishes, and I find regular h-scenes pretty boring - but no dark stuff for me. At least not in relation to sex.

I out right avoid stuff with rape and torture cause it's just disgusting. I do like dark themes in stories though cause it gives the whole drama feel which I like but stuff like this is just wrong to look at in my opinion. I can't believe that some people find enjoyment in this and even more that people actually make games packed with rape and not get disturbed or disgusted at it. I think it's things like this that make people look down on VNs cause of it's sexual content. Well it's my opinion though and it's not gonna change anything so I just look away from that dark sexual stuff and move on to more better horizons.

Dark sexual content? I've seen it all. :P

Well, I liked gore and grimdark stuff long before I even discovered anime (not to mention VNs), so getting into dark H was just a natural course of action in my case. I wasn't exactly sensitive to begin with, so I don't think threading into the weird Japanese H territory had all that much influence on me.

However, I don't like dark H solely for fetish reasons. I like those themes mainly because they are simply interesting. Only when the story is written well enough though, even in nukiges. For me, dark sexual themes must be accompanied by serious drama (or a solid black comedy, like http://vndb.org/v10636 for example - but that's rarely done well). When rape/NTR/guro/whatever are used in a pure fetishistic way and the story is just a dumb excuse for sex, it doesn't work. That's applicable to all kinds of sexual content really - without at least somewhat decent characterization, setting and story, I almost always find it simply boring (with very few exceptions).

Needless to say, I fully support the existence of such content. The weirder and the more disturbing the better. ^^

I'm sorry to go off-topic, but since there's already a thread about stuff like this, it might be better than creating a whole new one just for this.

Did anyone here read Sayonara wo Oshiete? I got kind of interested by the tags, but I was wondering if it's just a mindless nukige full of weird sex, or if there actually exists some interesting story behind it?

  • 4 months later...

Funny, but the first actual VN I read was a dark twisted one called Mugen Yasoukyoku... I don't even remember how I started reading it, whether on accident or on purpose.  But it kind of blew my mind in all kinds of ways, since it was my first time encountering something like that xD.  Not just because of the hentai scenes, but the strange dark story.. I do remember liking it.  And that's what opened me up to more VNs on the hentai/nukige side... those were what I mainly played, and only later did I find out about non-nukige ones like Crescendo, which I really liked. That's when I started to look for more VNs which weren't as focused on hentai... and now that I'm older with those experiences, overall, I prefer a more story-driven VN. Though, I don't mind some cute nukige sometimes like the Sono Hanabira series.

Basically: What are the long term effects of searching for and viewing darker sexual content? Do you personally support such content's existence?

Whether it effected me longterm...  Since I started out with darker stuff, I guess I became more easily open to them.  Personally, I think it mostly just fulfilled my curiosity in a fantasy-sense in my mind, it doesn't mean I'd ever do those (hentai) things in real life, nor would I be okay with it happening to real people.  I might even say, it made me a more open-minded person.. since it does not scare or disgust me, I have access to more types of stories.  Dark stories can be emotional, and also teach some good lessons so I like them.  I don't restrict myself from being unable to read anything.

Like I tried playing Euphoria some time ago.. but that was a bit extreme for even me. xD I wouldn't be against playing it, but I rather play other things.  ...and since I'm open about it, I don't really judge others for playing those types of games.

So yes, I probably support it.  It's just a story, a fantasy, and Not Real.. I know that, and I'm not gonna like re-inact anything that would hurt others irl, since that's against my principle anyways.  I personally feel Dark VNs in the longterm did not twist me into anything that wasn't there in the first place.

I've been wondering about this as well ever since that new sub genre of horror emerged titled: "Torture Porn" when the first Hostel movie came out. I personally don't believe it will do much good to censor or restrict it in any way because it is human nature to swing between extremes. Whether that be good vs. evil, light vs. dark, humans tend to have certain inclinations to kick the hornet's nest so to speak. Some people will get a glimpse of it and immediately become repulsed by the hideous and yet alluring nature of the beast, never to return again. Others will kick the door open and dive into the dark abyss, raring to entangle themselves with unknown territories in order to better understand taboo subjects.

My first reaction to witnessing the darker side of VNs and of human nature in other media was one of pure shock and revulsion. Curiosity got the better of me and after a while even that lost its luster. I guess it really just depends on whether one indulges too much of one thing. My mind felt heavy after having read perused that side of the VNs, so all that I can really say is to be aware of your limits. If you can make a clear distinction between fiction and reality, have a strong hold upon a moral compass and are able to function well in society without infringing upon another person's life then I see no reason why certain sides of storytelling should be restricted. It's really something that can only be set aside for a case-by-case basis. Not all people will react the same and lash out when they encounter rape, torture, or murder in storytelling. Casting a wide net will only ensure that our mental capacities are crippled and we become ignorant of the deeper meanings behind all stories.

I personally prefer my dark feast to be tied to a compelling plot with flawed characters, one that will scar me and yet make me appreciate the finer things in life all the more. I don't pursue the "dark side" of VNs to erode my humanity, but to better understand it and face it head so that I am better equipped understand all sides of this world. Stuff like Dustmania Grotesque reeks of exploitation, so it does nothing to appease my underlying appetite for a tragic story.

I try hard to avoid VNs with rape. One of my IRL friends was raped in college, and ever since I can't handle any male-on-female non-consensual scenes. I just can't stand rape being glamorized or sexualized. And I'm scared if I started reading VNs with rape, that I might start to enjoy it, and I just don't want to chance it. I'm already enough of a deviant as is! =)

That said, I don't have any problem with dark sexual / rape content existing, I just don't read it. It's fantasy, and I don't think less of anyone who can read it and enjoy it. I just can't compartmentalize myself well enough to do that.

Oh ... and I don't read NTR because it hurts my heart.

Well, H-Scenes don't do anything for me anyway, so my main concern in a VN is whether the scene actually helps drive the plot forward or whether it's just a "reward" H-Scene.  The former I like if I already liked the VN(Saya no Uta being the most obvious example I can think of), and the latter I just skip through(Muv-Luv, I'm looking at you).  That's my only criteria.  Since I don't enjoy them sexually, I'm also not turned off from darker content.

Basically, it has no more effect on me than any other violent content, which is to say it has none.

I feel like so long as one is capable of drawing the line between fiction and what is acceptable in reality, there shouldn't be any effects on someone who views and enjoys this kind of dark sexual content regularly that would be noticeable in real life.

While sexual violence is definitely not my fetish, I don't mind it and can as long as I know it's coming. If it catches me off-guard, I have a full-blown panic attack.

Bottom line though: I don't think there's any problem with the content being available to adults who want to view it.

I generally avoid anything dark. I don't want the protagonist involved in anything too over the top. I made an exception for rance because it was pretty kooky and pretty light hearted. I guess the darkest game I played was bible black. I don't think it has any impact on my preferences since I already formed them before playing the game.

Idk about 'darker' sexual content but ever since being exposed to sexual content in general my friends have noticed that I've... become a bit... more lewd? Like one of my female friends wore *overalls* one day and I literally motherfriggeneffingly said "nice ovaries" by mistake

smh x 23042304

I have one of those goody two shoes reputation btw

Nah. I enjoy a good ol' mind break-ing story, but it's not like it makes me want to go rape women. Maybe it's hypocritical, but that world is that world and this world is this world. I still think rapists are scumbags, and I'd rather kill myself than intentionally harm a woman.

Personally, I prefer dark chocolate with a vanilla filling. Like forced, but then it turns out they love each other. Something like a yandere who forces a guy to fuck her, but he totally falls for her cause who wouldn't? Or a hero falling victim to the whims of sexy mon-musume.

Holy shit. I really like femdom, don't I? Ehh, but I also like regular dom....so....

I'm S and M. Whoo!
