what should i say...as hungary is only famous for exporting hordes of gypsies & producing high quality porn (especially the weird one). oh forgot to mention our food is quite spicy, but thats about it.

That some specialty you have there. Can't really say much about spicy food since there's only a few regions that specializes in spicy dishes here in my country but I do love myself some good spicy food. Not really the overblown ones but the mild ones are good for me.

Football (real football you play with your feet): You must be a fan of a football team, otherwise you're a heretic and must be shunned from society. Even if you don't care much about football, always celebrate when the team wins an important game so you can fit in with everybody else. Football is basically on the level of religion in Portugal (probably even higher).

 

About 95% of Portugual's population is catholic (including all the variants) but only a tiny fraction actively practices the religion, most (like myself) were just baptized at birth. Although religious holidays are still celebrated by many even if just for the sake of having a party. We really like having random parties everywhere and they are often used as fundraisers.

 

Food: We're really proud of our food, especially seafood, if you don't eat seafood once in a while you're not enjoying life. Also Portugal, just like France, has restaurants that serve snails as snacks, most people from other countries are grossed out by it, but we don't really care.

 

Portugal is really proud of their heritage and backstory as we were once a decently big empire, even though right now we're not really that relevant anymore, but you should act proud anyway. We even brag about having our own music genre, but we don't really like it that much.

 

50% of Portugal is made up of beaches, we really like beaches and getting tanned here is basically human instinct for a lot of people since everyone lives close enough to the coastal line.

This is totally true. I do not have a club myself, you wouldn't believe how weird people think that is. Whenever my family's team is playing an important game, they always go visit our friends because our neighborhood is full with people from the opposite team.

Personally, I can manage without having a club, though everyone says I'm actually from their club, whichever it is.

So I guess that makes you one of the minority. Really interesting how you managed to be out of the descriptions that was given while being someone from the same environment. I really think that the environment shapes the inhabitants a lot so it's kinda strange how you didn't get swept up with that. Seems to prove how there's always an exception. I've also been more or less in the minority in what the people my age do so I do understand how people view me as if I'm a different existence.

The freedom is real along with the sarcasm. Kinda felt like actually creating a thread about the real meaning of freedom. That said, freedom in its truest definition might be a problem since that would mean that there would be no laws binding them.

I'm not really knowledgeable about sports but I don't think ice hockey is that popular of a sport everywhere since there are different countries that don't really have cold enough weather to actually have ice naturally. And I doubt that people in the olden days used to unnaturally freeze the ground so they could do the sport and carry it on nowadays. While I'm at it lemme say that my country's national sport is Arnis, it also being our national martial art.

 

Personally I really enjoy a cup of coffee. And by that I sometimes boil water for cups of coffee all for myself until I'm satisfied. No, we don't really use machines in brewing coffee here much. The traditional way of estimating how much sugar should you put that will end up in diabetes.

So you guys don't have any laws against minors drinking alcoholic beverages? Not that it really matters since you can drink in the comfort of your home and no one really cares. By the way I've heard somewhere that cold countries tend to have people drinking alcohol more. It warms up their bodies.

And that fewd looks good *Q*. It's 3 in the morning here so maybe I'll get something to eat. 

 

I'm not really that familiar with the work ethics here since I still don't work. Regarding politics, you can find a lot of them here bitching about how the government sucks and all but not doing anything at all to contribute to the improvement.

Okay then, some Russian traditions:

Compulsory military draft for males 18 and over.

You need to pay a fee to take the drivers license test, but if you don't also bribe the person taking your test, prepare to fail unless you're either really good or really lucky. Conversely, if you have never driven before but you bribe the person taking your test, you'll get your license anyway.

All homosexuals are also child molesters, so if you see a gay person beat the shit out of them to protect the children.

Drinking and smoking as early as 13-14 is pretty much par for the course.

When in a foreign country or, say, in an online game with non-Russian speakers, never give in and continue to speak Russian. If you raise your voice and swear people are more likely to understand you.

If you accidentally walk into someone the correct response is "Watch where you're going you dumb faggot."

Edit: If something bad (politically) happens, it's the (Jews'/Nazis'/Americans'/Immigrants'/Other) fault.

Yeah hockey is popular in many places but if you look how many pro players come from Finland that is a country with only 5 million inhabitants, you might be surpised.

Why does it sound like everyone is a delinquent and is out to get you? It feels like you don't need a dark alley and/or in the middle of the night to get killed. Bribery here is mostly seen in politics. It's more of "how can I buy the votes" rather than "how can I get support".

Well, killed is a bit unlikely, but mugged or beaten half to death, sure. Kinda rare for it to happen in the middle of a busy street, but somewhere off to the side, sure. Even during the day and especially at night.

My dad got mugged once. The way it happened was he was walking home from work in the evening, then was hit in the back of the head, kicked a few more times when he was on the ground (including his jaw, which ended up broken), then they went through his backpack and wallet, all they found was some cash and his passport, which they took.

 

And of course you can find those who are younger, but it's a little less common.

 

Oh, here's another one. If you find a phone or a wallet or something you're better off just selling it. If you find the person it belongs to and return it, there's a decent chance they'll call the police, attack you or just insult you for "stealing it."

That's one dangerous and thrilling country. Not really for the weak-hearted me. 

It seems like the intense environment made everyone weary with everyone else. Here it's outright stealing and they are really good. They can take stuff without you and the people around noticing. I've been a victim once so I can attest to this. Although they are weak against confrontations. I managed to get my wallet back after getting a grip on the partner of the thief through talking. Seriously, I just talked and convinced them to give it back.

 

We do have laws against it but we simply dont care and even the cops its pretty easy to get alcohol and if you are 16 years old you can buy beer wine and champagne legally

Pretty loose when it comes to laws regarding alcohols huh. Well there are a lot of instances where things just can't be avoided or happens too commonly and the authorities just let it go. I can't really say that we have the same dishes. The closest with the appearance of the pic is fries from Mc Donalds along with some chicken from another fastfood chain. My country being Asian, kinda doubt it. As for the choosing of party, I don't think it matters much here since it always end up the same. There are some exceptions but they are rarely showing up. I believe there was one who died a few years ago and they were singing praises of him since he wasn't corrupt at all. Well, according to the media anyway.

It's quite a feat to actually avoid that much after living there for years. And it sounds like you stayed the for quite some time. I haven't had any seriously dangerous encounters here but it'll probably end when I start attending classes at night. That or I can be careful enough that's being borderline paranoid.

Vietnam (yeah, I'm pretty much throwing mud at my own country here):

- We spend about 6 hours per day on meal (shopping for food, cooking, eating).

- We have a big collection of "foods that make people vomit right from the first sight". Lots (not all) of them are actually delicious though, people just don't have the gut the try them.

- We are brainwashed by Korean drama and music

- Because of the two wars, our culture is heavily affected by France (North Vietnam) and U.S (South Vietnam).

- Due to some weird different in ideas, lots of people from the South hate people from the North and vice versa. Mainly youngsters with flat brain though.

- We have a bunch of the useless so-called "world heritage", and their number keeps increasing every year. Most of us proud of it, although I just find it idiot.

- We don't celebrate Christmas. All the shops still make use of this day for their business, and couples still use Christmas for dating this and that, but it's not official.

- Our government holds voting for Parliament's member all the time, but the actual decision was already made by them before that. Result of the vote has zero effect whatsoever.

- We have our name in the ban list of lots of MMO games.

- Football a.k.a soccer is the most popular sport in Vietnam. Despite that, what we learn in PE class are badminton and basketball.

- In college and university, we have a whole subject just to be brainwashed study about the glorious of the government. Fail that one, and you are done for.

Still haven't seen one that sings praises about his own country. Not that everything's negative but mostly negative along with some positive ones. There might not be huge wars that hit continents but there really are conflict everywhere. Well, that always happen when people interact tho. Also the food. It's common in Asian cuisine so don't worry about it. Looks inedible but really delicious.

 

We aren't really banned on MMOs but we are notorious for being salty, stupid players in games. I don't really play DotA 2 but I heard that they coined a wonderful term for us; Peenoise. I'm not really offended tho since it's more or less deserved.

 

For the university courses, we have one called RIzal Course. Everyone is require to take take it no matter what degree you're pursuing. Basically it's all about the wonderful life of our National Hero, Jose Rizal. And by that everything about him is included.

Also fun fact: His full name is Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonzo Realonda. If you're wondering why his name is sooo long, google it. You'll find some sort of law during that time that required adding names to your own.

That's pretty bad... I actually don't know what worse, that or Rustard. And yeah, I play Dota 2 and the shit that Russians get is completely deserved.

 

There are some positive aspects, but the negative ones far outweigh them imo.

Mushroom picking is pretty common in the summer, and as long as you're careful not to pick something poisonous a lot of wild mushrooms taste way better than the usual ones you buy in a store.

PC games are super cheap because people earn way less there, and back when people tried to sell games at full price most people just pirated them. Then Valve had the brilliant idea of selling games cheaper there, and it worked, although a lot of people pirate anyway, though not as many. Consoles, on the other hand, didn't have Valve and it's a bit more difficult to pirate games, so they sell them for the full price + import costs. As a result the same AAA game on release can cost $20 for PC and $80 for a console (at least that's how it was a few years ago).

On that note, pretty much everything is cheaper there because people don't earn as much.

Dunno what else, those are just the first "traditions" that came to mind that aren't horrible.

Well, since I'm in the US, all we do is co-opt other countries' culture and worship American sports and the mighty American dollar.  Ironically, we all love democracy as praise it to high heaven, but loathe almost all of the politicians that we elect to high office and whine about how terrible our current system of government is.

 

Most of the traditions I personally follow are related to my international heritage (I have a large amount of German, British, Scottish and Irish blood), so it's kinda hard to say what traditions I have as an American.  Does consumer culture count?
