  1. ^ Same here, I like that system a lot. Probably the best one in plot driven story, but with obligatory romances for VN audiences, who can't live without them.

    Anyway thanks for the review, now I know that I will read 11e, but with a massive amount of salt, because I don't believe you, never again. Because Comyu is Sharin-level shit and somehow you liked it. :P

    On the space-plane to Earth with Daigo after Aqua got kidnapped

    and I don't know if I really wanna continue. I'm not really enjoying it sadly. I got through Aries's route hoping I'll find Aqua's more interesting but I don't. i don't like most of the characters, and I really dislike Daigo. People say this route is the highlight of the VN and Asuka's route is a bit of a drop after Aqua's so I don't know if I should continue it. :mellow:

    Read it. It gets much worse from now.  And at the same time - thematically - much better and more complex. You somehow 'miiight' like it.

    I read everything up to and including Aqua route. Frankly I hate the writing in this game, I have a lot of issues with it, and my opinion of Daigo matches yours.

    Here's everything I can think of (spoilers, of course)

      Reveal hidden contents

    - Fuck Daigo, seriously. I won't even go into detail here since you've said it all.

    - "First love stronger and inevitably more important than any following ones"

    - "Non-blood-related not really family"

    - Aqua acting like a spoiled princess in her route: they're supposed to be equals there, yet the protag is the only one working his ass off. The bad ends are pretty bad in this game overall, but it was particularly awful at the end of Aqua route. Is she even interested in the relationship?

    - The implication that what Souichirou did was wrong - the naivete that radical solutions like that (killing a ton of people) are always bad and "there's always another way" - oh how sick I am of that line of thinking, you see this childish writing everywhere in Japanese media.

    - The statement that it was Akira who tore Daigo and Akari apart - so Akira is to blame for just being there because Akari wanted someone's D and Daigo wasn't close enough?

    - Youichi forgot about Aoi not because of Moon AIDS, but because "he couldn't live on otherwise" - now that's a hell of a convenient memory, haven't we seen this somewhere before? How about a ton of other titles with the same idiotic cliche?

    - You can switch to Aries/Aoi immediately after everything that happened with Aqua? How can you live with yourself after that? :amane:

    - Contrived ending to Aqua route, with Akira - the bad guys are the good guys now? Admit it writers, you simply couldn't think of any other way of making it a happy end plus giving Aqua the ability to marry which is apparently an indispensable thing in relationships (spoiler: it isn't, get rekt)

    - No killing allowed. Typical of almost all Japanese works. Aqua pointing a gun at Akira and about to pull the trigger? Show me someone who felt any tension from that scene, and if that person is familiar with Japanese media I'll laugh at them. Then we just handle the scene with two dudes beating each other up a little as if that solves anything. Fucking classic.

    - The loli trio constantly being obedient dogs when they can just take over the whole place when things get rough. They wouldn't even need to kill anyone for that.

    - Going back to the first episode. Trying to grow sunflowers in a public park? Isn't that, like, illegal? Those sunflowers will just get in the way.

    - The "grab her hand" bad end. Why is it either take the hand by force or not do anything? How about, you know, asking? But oh no, that'll get in the way of the plot.

    - In 2050, the only nations to have ever stood on the surface of the moon are America and Japan? Take your Japanese pride somewhere else, will ya.

    - The world is in turmoil because some astronaut guy died two years ago? Some idiot who got spectacularly turned down while the entire world was watching? Life goes on, plus he wasn't the first one to land on the moon anyway.

    - I thought Daigo was a womanizer, but with Youichi kissing Asuka in the backstory for no apparent reason I don't even know anymore. Despite this, Daigo doesn't land even a single kiss on Aqua, clearly to avoid giving the player a feeling of NTR (yes, I know that NTR is originally about sex, this is the expanded meaning).

    - The list goes on...

    Bonus: lost in translation

    The butler, I think is full name is Jouji? He calls himself Johny because Akari called him Jou-nii. It's a Japanese thing. Early in the game if you choose to go get the missile with Asuka, the seduction trick they use will involve calling Johny Jou-nii as you'll hear in the character voice, but the translation will simply say Jou.

    I love reading posts like that. I really hope that one day I will be able to put my thoughts in such a cohesive and non 'raging' way. :P

    Since you're about to start Asuka route - I will say that worst is behind you. Asuka route is fairly 'enjoyable' typical for charage route. Something that could easily take place in Hoshizora no Memoria, or something similiar. It's not good - but it's not insulting to their audience and to their own (pretty decent) plot ideas.

  4. Yup, finally something we can clearly agree upon.
    The truth is though - the VNs 'for me' are sometimes hard to distinguish from those 'not for me'. I loved i/o and Remeber11. I disliked Ever17. I loved 'comedy gold' Majikoi'. I hated another 'comedy gold' Grisaia. It's really hard to find something that I know it would please me.
    Himawari ought to be "character driven story in 'grounded' sf setting, with deep, developed characters". And I like character driven stories. I love deep characters. But here... I disliked everybody except for Momoji, and situations and 'depth' of those characters were way out of my 'likings'. (I don't found them particullary deep either). So, yeah. It's hard. But I will not stop trying, because when I find gems, all this struggling, all this rage, all this sadness and pain turns to be a worthwile road to happiness. Because for each Himawari there is Flowers, and for each Sharin no Kuni there is Kara No Shoujo 2.

    ...and I kinda love 'hating' things. So there is also that.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    @Funnerific - did you read Sunflower?
  5. Majikoi A2.
    Very uneven.
    First route, Monshiro was one of the worst and most boring Majikoi routes ever. Absolutely nothing, hard streched few hours of completly nothing.
    Second route, Seiso. My god, Takahiro is a god of light tonned chuuni. Amazing first half of the route, Seiso is great charatcer, and all those fights and 'power levels' and intrugues are just really god and fun to read. Especially considering the fact that fights are really short and not overlly detailed. Can't wait for more, hope this will keep it's quality level.
  6. I'm reading after stories, I'm in the first one, and... it's really good! Best part of the game, easily.
    It have great mood (with elements of even 'mystery thriller' in it!), good story, interesting, mature characters, no idiotic unfunny humour, no Aqua in sight, nobody resembles of Aries airheadness, and overall - it's good. It's really good.
    Cheap backgrounds reminds me of Tsukihime, no voice acting, so I envision characters as probably a little more mature than intended, and I really like it.
    Espacially Momoji, she's a nice 'protagonists', she's a little quirky, but I symphatize with her and envision her as a tall, slender, nov very pretty, but elegant character.
    And then remake developers said...
    FUCK YOU. FUCK YOU HARD IN THE ASS FUCKER. How dare you enjoy our story? How dare you envision those characters as much better looking characters than what we envisioned? Here you are, eat this shit asshole.
    Spoiler
    8Z4G3bz.jpg
    You wanted to have something good? Nope, we will coat all that good story with shitties of the shitty moe, dumb, emptyheaded looking mummin.
    I'm devastated. This is 3h long story and I need a break in the middle of it.
    Fuck this VN. Fuck Frontwing. Never again will I read anything from them (besides Grisaia, I need to finish that shitfest trilogy).
    Playing Higanbana and the use of "bully" derivatives in the Yukari chapters is drinking game worthy. Sometimes it is used four times in one paragraph!
    But is it good? Care to say anything more about it?
  8. 3 hours ago, Dergonu said:
    It did indeed just kind of pass by most people, but it was a very good read if you ask me. (I actually listed it as the best TLed game I read all year. Then again, I didn't read too many, but still.)
    Tbh it's probably fine not including it, with the small amount of people who actually read it. Not a lot of people know about it tbh, so it wouldn't get a lot of votes.
    People should read it though. It has a really good story and is completely different from most yuri games released which focus only on cute moe and fluffy romance. The bad ends are chilling and the good ends are beautiful. Overall a very unique and entertaining VN.
    I just finished Flowers and I'm in love with non fluffy lesbian games. Nurses have nice graphics, so I'll probably give it a shot in not so distant future. But is there any place I can read your wider opinion on this?
  9. I will take into account only VNs that was released in 2016 in english, on PC.
    So, best from what I read:
    FataMorgana. No doubts. Great production values, fantastic story.
    Worst? Well... Still haven't read Grisaia 2, so I will say:
    Himawari. Overhyped, boring, creepy and cliched story with vile, shallow but 'preteding to be deep' characters, and ugly art.
    Other worthy mentions, positive:
    Flowers 1, which is, while flawed, a way ahead majority of other VNs in terms of overall quality. It's actually kinda strange, since I'm reading both Hiamwari and Flowers right now.
    ...just saw my vndb profile and those, Lucy and Majikoi A1 are only ones released in 2016 that I read. :P Oh well. :P
    They won't. ;)
    2 hours ago, Dreamysyu said:
    The main intrigue is pretty interesting, and I personally cannot see so far where this is going. I just hope they don't end it all with something stupid like "It was all a dream" or something. I would be pretty disappointed if this is the case.:yumiko:
    Oh, you won't. You have no idea. ^^
    2 hours ago, Dreamysyu said:
    Also, nice intrigue is always good, but it means that the main ideas of the story are left in the dark until the very end, and I have no means of judging them before then. So far I'm willing to rate this title with 9/10, but I would not be surprised if the mark falls to 7 in the end.
    It's not as bad as Ever17, when almost every question was raised just before all the answers was presented - in the last few hours. FataMorgana opens itself slowly, but steadily, around 4th chapter onwards. And it's great.
  11. Thanks. I will stay on reading Rikka first then.
    Did I mention that I love it? Cause I love it. So many memorable scenes, such a great atmosphere. 1 on 1 scene with Rikka on bed, when they firs started using their names? Such a great chemistry and erotic tension. Suoh outburst that she beleives in Rikkas innocence, and Rikkas gratefullness? God-like voice acting, made simple scene filled with emotions. Great title so far.
    Although first 'investigation' was just pure luck + knowledge from character profiles on vndb. I had no idea what all those books mean, so I just shot in the blind.
    Glad I could save someone from the pain I went through :D
    Could you say how much 'routes' differ? Or rather - are there any routes at all?
    Because I wanted to save Mayurii (one of the best girls EVER <3 ) till the last playthrough, but if there is only one route with different endings, I might restert the game before it's too late and go with Mayurii first to have the best, full 'experience', without relying on 'skip' function.
  13. I finished Aqua route in Himawari, found it annoying in the first part, and mildly interesting in second, which could be summarised as 'typical charage route' with interesting ideas behind "drama", presented in '2048' retrospect episode. So yeah, nothing great in here.
    I'm so tired of this VN right now, so I'm taking a break before diving in another 'shitty unfunny humour filled first part' route. At least there is no Aqua, who is simply a vile, mentaly unstable creature.
    My break looks like this:
    102129_43339753.png
    And just from the beginning there is SO MUCH QUALITY. I love InoGrey art, music, drawnings, voice actors, everything. And those top notch voice actors have some really beutiful things to say. I do not know jack shit about japanese, but I just love to listen to these full, complex, fastly read sentences, instead of typical for moeblobs moaning, whinning, barking and howling. When I hear those long sentences I just feel 'these characters are intelligent'. When I hear Himawari Aries doing all her 'Ewewewee, Yoichi, Aries is happy-desu!' I just feel like 'this is not a character, this thing is acting like an animal/very little kid'.
    So yeah, excited to read Flowers. Unfortunatelly choice structure here is fucked up.
  14. 9 hours ago, Narcosis said:
     That said, Himawari is more about the road and struggles of it's characters, rather than the ending , which is open up to personal interpretations. If you jumped into it without any sort of expectations, or actually didn't really knew what you're getting into, it's obvious you'll be disappointed.
    All I know about Himawari were desings of main characters, and that it's 'character driven story, set in not distant future'. And that first chapter is moeblobbing, while next ones are much more serious. So far - it's exactly what I thought it would be. Except that I don't like basically nobody except Ginga, whom I only 'tolerate'.
    [Aqua in her 'route' is much more unlikeable (her attitude towards Youichi, while explainable, is still far from nice, so I just don't like her) than in 2048.]
    9 hours ago, Narcosis said:
    That aside - they're in space, on a corporation's private station. Earth's laws don't apply there. There's no stockholm syndrome, either.
    Who cares about law? (And I do believe that law aboard space stations are clearly defined.) It's just...wrong. Creepy. From moral standpoint.
    9 hours ago, Narcosis said:
    Aqua could have shot him. She actually almost did it once. Their relationship grows on their mutual dependence. You see, Aqua needs him and Daigo wouldn't simply get through it, if not for her. There's a lot more to it than just a young girl falling head over heels for a much older, rowdy guy. You won't understand it, till majority of the game, though. Aqua's route will reveal most of it.
    Yeha, because shoting a guy is a normal thing to do and everybody 'can' do that.
    I agree that Daigo needed her. I don't see why she really 'needed' him, but there would be no progress in her character if not for him, to that I agree.
    9 hours ago, Narcosis said:
    There's no stockholm syndrome, either. Do you even know what a stockholm syndrome is?
    Yup, I do know. And I stay by my words.
    "Stockholm syndrome is a psychological condition that causes hostages to develop sympathetic sentiments towards their captors, often sharing their opinions and acquiring romantic feelings for them as a survival strategy during captivity."
    This guy was a completly new thing in her life. She, as a decent human being, out of compassion and fear, helped him and tend to his wounds. Then he started to live in her quarters. She was constantly angry at him, constantly tired and was (in her thoughts, so it was genuine) yearning for some calmness. Of course she spended time with him and wanted this time to be as enjoyable as possible - as any sane person in her situation would do. If she went to Akira (of whom she was scared), she would be in problem as well, because she was sheltering him. She was confused and didn't know what to do, to the point in which she completly enclosed herself from even her 'sisters'.
    Probably most of the 14 yo girls, living in bubble of spacestation, with very little human interactions would be very confused, or even scared if 40+ yo loud and creepy guy imposed himself on her room and her life. And she couldn't even escape, because she had nowhere to go - it was her room, her one and only private place.
    9 hours ago, Narcosis said:
    Personally, I found their relationship entertaining and kind of fulfilling, while the ending was heartwrenching. Not because I was expecting Aqua to get down and dirty with Daigo, sharing their last moments while running out of air on a Moon, but because it was genuine and I was actually able to relate with Aqua, because I already knew, what's cooking.
    Well, good for you then. I believe your feelings were in writter intentions.
    9 hours ago, Narcosis said:
     2048 gives you enough hints to somewhat grasp that bigger picture in front of you, even if certain things won't become clear until the end. If you were unable to sense it, I am truly sorry you couldn't enjoy it the way I did, because Himawari's foreshadowing is mostly impressive - the way all the events finally meld in the end is something worth waiting for.
    I feel like I spend too much time discussing this before I even finished this title. I will come back to you after I finish this whole VN. Hopefully tomorrow. ;)
    Just hope this ending is as good as you're saying. But I have in mind fact, that I found true route in ever17 very lacking and pretty mediocre (best route was Yous' route), so I have reservations when people writting that 'XYZ is greatly tying everything together in the last chapter'. So, yeah. Let's get back to grinding.
