I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that they were going for a T rating.

Nope it's been confirmed that the game will be receiving an M rating for the Mask of deception even with the censored content: Mask of Deception trailer

So this is not an instance of them changing a rating for more sales but because this was the only thing they could do to release the game without getting it an equivalent to an AO rating in Europe.

  2. Unfortunately it does seem as if the games will have some censorship which I know for many is a big no sale and I agree but on the other hand Atlus did tell us about this ahead of time and before we found out for ourselves they've explained it's for physical violence against minors and sexual content (likely in the same scene so it's probably discipline by spanking which is apparently AO territory these days in Europe) and so far the games have been rated M and outside of that scene no other scenes of censorship have been mentioned. I give props on Atlus for bothering to come clean about the decision early even if I am not a fan. Why we can not harm children in games I will never understand especially for an M rated title that children should not be playing anyways.

That said I am interested in the games so I'll probably pick them up eventually. The censorship may regulate me to buying it later for a lot cheaper or buying it used (also game wise I have too many for later this year as it is already).

  3. Just checked out the non-DRM demo of Tales of Berseria on PC...ran fine and I like the cast of characters which simply makes is sadder since I won't be picking it up until they remove the DRM...verdict is still undecided if I give in and grab the PS4 version though. I'm also having serious doubts about picking up Horizon Zero Dawn after the recent story trailer. I also pre-ordered a Switch and BotW and I'm like one of the most anti-nintendo people I know. I think the system itself sucks and has a ton of problems with it but that Zelda trailer looked really beautiful with the music and scenes that played out. I still have plenty of time to cancel if I decide not to go through with it but nintendo has never been about the game system it's been about the strong games. I also forgot I pre-ordered Fate/Extella ages ago and apparently my order went through so I'll likely check that out or return it.

Harukuru has an official English release in the plans it seems: Tweet

A little worried about the All Ages version they have planned hopefully they go through mangagamer and release an 18+ version as well as I am not quite sure how well it would work without the first part of the game. I'll remain hopeful for it though so nice find.

  5. So I did one of these in the past...basically it's a top 10 most wanted visual novels for 2017 list along with any honorable mentions you want to mention. Part of the purpose of this is to eventually go through and similar to what Mangagamer is doing, find out which games pop up the most often. At the same time this is hopefully going to introduce people to new potential games to look for as the bigger name visual novels are consistently getting licensed and people might start feeling as if there isn't anything. I will briefly go over a few reasons for picking what I did but you don't have to.

    1. Aiyoku no Eustia (The company behind this game August is one of the great hold out visual novel companies that according to opinions have great games. I am in particular interested in this game because the characters are supposedly adults and not in school. It's nice to see visual novels that escape the school setting and still manage to set up an interesting premise).

    2. Harumade, Kururu ( For a game that initially sounds like a cliche harem romp I have heard nothing but praise for this game and it's enough to consider me extremely curious to find out why people say it's more than it seems. I've liked previous games that have switched genres midway through and this one seems like it could have potential. My biggest reason though is simply curiosity)

    3. Twinkle Crusaders (Honestly I'm not sure why I think this would potentially be a good pick it sounds stupidly cliche in a way that the game itself might be funny. I'm not overly sold on the art but the fact the game also has gameplay kind of intrigues me a bit. I also think this is a more likely pick for a company like Mangagamer to pick up. I think it would sell well and that is good for whatever company decides to pick it up which is good for the medium overall).

    4. Hoshi Ori Yume Mirai: Honestly the real thing about this one that is selling me on the initial idea is the idea that the relationships will occur over time. I don't know how accurate this is but if that's the case I'd be for it. The art looks pretty solid and I've heard it's pretty long and while it has some routes better than others I'm interested enough that I wouldn't mind it. I am mainly jumping on board this one because a bunch of people are saying it's good no idea if this is true or not).

    5. White Album 2: (I highly doubt that we would get this game but then look at what else has been happening recently with all the other licenses. It's not impossible. I actually really enjoyed the anime and would love to see the actual game version of events as generally the story will be better in the written medium).

    6. Akatsuki no Goei Trilogy: (Don't ask me why I want this trilogy so much but I do. It sounds hell of a entertaining and might not be as it seems at first glance. I rather like the art and the premise and the character designs. It was one of the first non-translated visual novels that I ever heard of and it's probably why this and Parfait ~Chocolat Second Brew~ have been on my most wanted visual novels list for a long time. The premise of this makes me think it would sell well as well which is a plus. It's a bit older than some but damn I would love to see this.

    7. Evolimit/Bullet Butlers: Tokyo Babel is so far enjoyable. Not the greatest visual novel but I like a lot of what it is trying to do. Propeller is showing themselves to be capable and I wouldn't mind reading two of their so-called biggest hits.

    8. Eushully (any): (A number of visual novels I wouldn't mind from this company: Amayui Castle Meister (not yet out but it's in the same series as Kamidori Alchemy Meister so I would like to see it one day...extremely unlikely to get released in 2017 though even if Eushully did decide to release in the west). Ikusa Megami Zero, Ikusa Megami Verita, or Soukoku no Arterial. Biggest reason is the gameplay as Eushully is one of the big gameplay visual novel creators and for the most part they have decent or great game releases according to popular opinion.

    9. Scarlett: (I really like the idea of multiple protagonists in game that tells a good story through it. The game premise is a simple little story about 2 people and their different worlds and loves. It's one of the older visual novels on this list but I usually end up liking these types of visual novels so this one has enough in it to get me interested).

    10. Soushuu Senshinkan Gakuen Hachimyoujin: Light just entered the translated vn scene and they have quite a few visual novels that look interesting that I wouldn't mind reading at some point in time, this is just one of them.

Honorable Mentions: Hatsuyuki SakuraKoiiro SoramoyouSubarashiki Hibi ~Furenzoku Sonzai~, Tropical Kiss, Daitoshokan no HitsujikaiSakura no Uta -Sakura no Mori no Ue o Mau-, Evenicle, Ao no Kanata no Four RhythmSanoba Witch, Sengoku+Koihime~Otome Kenran *Sengoku Emaki Amairo*IslenautsSekai de Ichiban Dame na KoiAmatsutsumi, HHG Megami no Shuuen, , Da Capo III: spin off and fandisc (preferably mangagamer should bundle them together) Lovesick Puppies -Bokura wa Koi Suru Tame ni Umaretekita-, and Liar-Soft titles in general.

Unlikely Hopes: 18+ Pulltop titles (Miagete Goran, Yozora no Hoshi o), Muramasa,  Tsukihime Remake, Ore-tachi ni Tsubasa wa nai - under the innocent sky, ChuSinGura 18+(better translation), AstralAir no Shiroki Towa, 18+ Baldr SkyHatsuru Koto Naki Mirai YoriKono Yo no Hate de Koi o Utau Shoujo YU-NO (or the older version)

nukige because might as well: No Pantsu!!Henshin!!! ~Pantsu ni Natte Kunkun Peropero~Change! ~Ano Ko ni Natte Kunkun Peropero~

Honestly there's quite a few visual novels out there still that could potentially be interesting. Unfortunately unless the visual novel market increases in quality instead of quantity we may eventually find ourselves suffering the quality drought (if we catch up) that I've been told has been hitting Japan. Perhaps looking to original english language or (other language) visual novels is not a bad thing perhaps they can help drive the market with new ideas. Regardless as western audiences we have plenty more stories to look forward. What other games are people hopeful to get licensed or translated? Feel free to discuss and post your own lists below.

  6. I'll go ahead and suggest for one of the suggestions the same as most people but then I'm going to add two titles that I don't think many people have heard a lot about.

    1. Aiyoku no Eustia (this one is unlikely but not impossible...we don't know why they've refused the market thus far but if Light, Giga, Frontwing, Purple Software, Akabeisoft, Liar-Soft, Key, Alicesoft, etc... all rather important to the medium decided to throw in a try at succeeding in the west then I really don't think August or even Type-Moon is impossible at this rate.)

    2. Harumade, Kururu (I have heard nothing but praise for this game and it's enough to consider me extremely curious to find out why)

    3. Twinkle Crusaders (This just sounds entertaining although it would be better if they released it with all content that has been made for it)

  7. https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2017-01-12/amazon-u.s-launches-anime-strike-paid-streaming-service/.110924

Crunchyroll, Funimation, Daisuke, Anime Now, now have some 'serious competition' from amazon's $160 subscription fee of Anime Strike.

Now for anyone who is actually thinking Anime Strike will one day be worth it please remember that both funimation and crunchyroll offer airing anime for free a week after release. Amazon Strike requires payment.

The thing that really gets me is that when trying to push Anime Strike they say they want to treat anime fans right since television isn't doing that. They are right television isn't doing that because we had things like crunchyroll and funimation that actually understand anime fans. Instead we get Amazon who on top of making users pay 100 dollars for a prime membership must now spend an additional 60 for the Anime Strike. If that were not the kicker however there is more bad news. In order to get the Amazon Strike membership you must also have an Amazon Prime membership. Amazon is holding shows hostage behind a 160 dollar pay wall. But wait it gets worse than even that.

Do also remember amazon has never shown a genuine interest in the anime fandom beyond are dollar value. Amazon system of organization (as someone who checked out the free thing for less than an hour) the company has a total of 52 anime (and only 6 of those are exclusive to Strike). There is no way to properly discuss the show only to give ratings there is nothing to build a community. Amazon is treating it like television as well as a number of the more risque shows are still censored and still of broadcast releases rather than dvd/blu-ray releases (Yes I checked). Amazon is also a private business so if a show offends it they can easily pull it or censor it without notice. They are also extremely limited on dub shows as well. The fact that amazon is going to curate the site/platform as well likely means any reviews or comments depicting a show in a negative light they can remove at will. Amazon has already been heavily moderating user responses/questions/reviews so this just means we're going to see it even worse now.

Amazon Strike has also affected those with with Prime membership as many of the shows that had the entire lineup available to watch via prime now only have a few episodes which is likely confirmation that yes they are saying fuck you anime fans you want to watch anime you gotta pay us an additional 60 dollars.

Anime Strike also unlike crunchyroll, funimation, and all those others do not have a free service of any sort. Please do not support this horrible action by amazon...hell I'm annoyed enough that I'm probably going to simply stop supporting amazon and will return to pirating for their select shows.

Anime Strike needs to fail. It has to fail or we will be seeing basically the whole situation with television happening online even worse than it already is. I am not going to do anything with Amazon Strike and I urge everyone to make it fail so that they give up on it.

And with that my initial distaste for this mockery of anime is at an end. I'll try to remain more civil from now on I'm just so very pissed at this time. Perhaps once I cool down I can play the amazon's advocate...although as it is at the moment hell will freeze over first.

Is there motion blur when you swivel the camera? I'm thinking of picking this up for my sister, but she gets migraines. One of her migraine triggers is when swiveling the camera generates a fair bit of motion blur. She loved the older Tales games, but couldn't play Zestiria because of it.

They have a free demo on PS4 and PC if you want to check which is one of the things I do appreciate about this release...PC players can find out if the game is even capable of being played now.

  9. So just use this as a main thread for Tales of Berseria talk about characters, plot, development decisions etc...

So the new Tales of series game is almost upon us and I'm having difficulty deciding whether or not to buy this one. Zestiria was a bit boring but not an unplayable game and this one looks a lot better. The plot and even combat seem interesting and I would probably buy it if that was all that concerned me. However the recent announcement of Namco Bandai has caused me to question whether or not this is a game I should bother supporting.

For reference the censorship in the game pertains to an early part of the game where a sword impaling someone is changed to two swords impaling someone. In fact it actually seems a bit more brutal with the censored scene. I don't care for censorship (they altered the scene to not go over a 16+ rating in Europe apparently) but since the intent/purpose of the scene is still there and doesn't actually change a whole lot (to my knowledge?) is this an instance where I can just let it be.

The second issue is that the PC version, the version I would prefer to get has Denuvo in addition to Steam. I've heard and read a lot about Denuvo and hypothetically none of it is good. I don't like buying games with DRM and I didn't buy anything but non-DRM copies from Mangagamer when they still offered it. I've gotten a tad more lax on this type of thing and I'm pretty sure that at least one game I have already had Denuvo install so am I making more issue towards this than I should be?

The third issue is whether or not I should just bite the bullet and buy it on PS4 instead. I do prefer games on PC but could probably get used to a controller again if need be. So the question I ask if I do end up deciding to get it should I get is PS4 (edit: I own one) or PC?

One final question I have is whether or not people are planning on buying the game or are looking forward to it at all?

Edit: I'm currently considering just waiting and buying the PS4 version (or if they remove denuvo pc version) at a later date in time. If anyone does buy it be sure to let us know if the game is even worth it.

  10. Here's a few don't expect me to discuss the plot/characters or anything but I'll try and give you an idea about why you might like one of these. I'm in the same camp though grinding I used to enjoy when I was younger but as I'm older I just don't have time for that as much anymore. Hopefully you can find something to try and enjoy.

    PC Recommendations:

Grandia II: Long held by jrpg fans to have one of the best combat systems for the genre of game, the HD Remaster is great PC version of the game. It comes with both english and japanese dialogue and multiple difficulty modes. The game itself while the story is a bit cliche is rather entertaining and enjoyable nonetheless. One point for it (or against for some) is that the game can be completed in about 40 hours which is rather short for most jrpgs. While it is not a perfect game it is one of the better jrpgs on Steam.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD: You may be wondering why I have this Final Fantasy game on here and not a different game. The simple answer is that the PC HD Remaster has additional features that can make grinding a lot easier. The game comes with 5 pottential boosters which do the following (hit escape to see the menu); speed mode (toggles between normal, 2x speed, and 4x speed...no skipping cutscenes and doesn't affect menus though), supercharge mode (not sure what this does but I imagine it will make people hit like a truck, Encounter Mode (increase or decrease enemy encounter rate), Auto-Battle Mode (use this along with the speed mode and grinding is easy as hell and speeds up the process), Hud mode (toggles the hud on or off so you can take screenshots). You don't have to use any of them but the speed and auto-battle mode makes grinding less tedious if you decide to do it. The story is pretty good for the most part and the characters have character and can be interesting but it is a bit boring at the beginning but gets better as it goes on...a bunch of side quests, minigames, etc... that you can do if you want (it's optional), and it's the first final fantasy game to release with dialogue (at least back when it released).

Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky: This is is a great jrpg it has some quirky personalities but it has character and plot and has pretty solid gameplay while also giving you a very interesting look at the world that the game takes place in. I can't really do any game justice with just talking about it but this is one of my favorite jrpgs to come out recently. The game does leave off a bit ambiguous but the sequel has been translated and released as well.

    Valkyria Chronicles: What Rooke said

Tales of Symphonia: Not the best port but there is a mod to make it more manageable on PC. I was a fan of the Tales series growing up and even like it to this day even if I dislike some practices of the current PC crowd. It deals with pretty mature content and while friends and all that is a thing (it's a jrpg) it's not nearly as emphasized as something like Graces F. It has an interesting world and interesting characters with a decent story. But again unless you use the mod might be better off skippig

Positive points: You can pick up Valkyria Chronicles, Grandia II, and Legend of Heroes on a sale for usually less than 10 dollars and X/X-2 during a squenix sale for less than 20.

Console/ Recommendations for you: Suikoden II, Chrono Trigger, Skies of Arcadia, Nier, Xenogears/Xenosaga, Shadow Hearts Covenant (or play Shadow Hearts then SH Covenant), Valkyrie Profile, and Parasite Eve)

Currently playing Tsukihime (not the remake lol).

The graphics are like sand in my eyes, but as a Type Moon fan, I must grind through it!!

Hope it will be worth it lol

You could just wait for the remake...they are almost out of fate spin-offs to milk after all. I'm sure they'll get around to it eventually. Watch them announce it on April 1st of this year. The joke will be that no one will believe it's a real announcement.

  12. As someone who never really got into the nekopara franchise I am able to look at this a bit more critically. I find it rather disappointing that most people backing this would rather a 60 minutes ova on cat girls than a 60 hour game like Dies Irae but that's just my opinion. Kickstarter seems to have become a way for Japanese companies to sell crap that normally could be made and sold much cheaper just about anywhere else rather than the product they are trying to kickstart. When did kickstarter become about memorabilia and licensing rather than new ideas? Shame really. Regardless the amount of money put into this is likely more on the Japanese side of things. I also find it quite likely that this would have happened regardless of the kickstarter and that this is just a quick way for them to make a few quick bucks.

That said which studio is even doing this and if they are doing an in home studio what evidence do we have that the quality will be any good?

I also have to say that the stretch goals for this are rather awful. The initial goal of 100,000 will pay for a 20 minute ova (it would seem likely that every 50,000 would be for 10 minutes). However the stretch goals are 100,000 afterward to extend it by 10 minutes. This is double the initial goal per 10 minute increments. Hell even the tiers are pretty much crap when put in perspective. They require an extra 150 (300 dolalrs total) for just two plushies? It doesn't help that after the 300 dollar tier they jump to 800. I don't know why but this just seems badly done especially if they offer any of the kickstarter items after the kickstarter which you will note none of this says kickstarter exclusive. What this means is that it is quite likely they will sell this stuff after the kickstarter. If people also bother to check there isn't even a confirmation that they are getting the same voice actresses for the game. I would be cautious about this especially since Sekai Project has had a poor time of releasing content both in a timely matter and at all. I get this sinking feeling that this is going to be not what people are expecting.

Now taking off the paranoia goggles if you want to back this go right ahead this is also just a few minor things I've been concerned with don't take that as a means of me hating this kickstarter but just I've gotten a lot more cynical of kickstarters. Hopefully to everyone that backs there are no issues and you actually get it within a few years.

Slightly off topic question though should this be in the anime section instead of the visual novel section. I mean sure it's based on a vn but then we have other vn adaptations discussed about in the anime section rather than here. I'm sure the same is likely true the other way around but what area should this be in?

The House In Fata Morgana is exactly what you're looking for.

I would have to say as of the moment you were exactly right. I decided to randomly buy a vn from the suggested ones here and this one happened to be on sale so I decided to try it. I've spent the last 8 or so hours straight slowly reading to Chapter 4 which is not something I can say has happened in quite some time. I've heard a lot of good things about it but for whatever reason never got around to trying it. Now that I finally have as it's quite enjoyable so far.

Thanks all for the recommendations; I might get to some of the others after, as this one will likely be done with soon. I think Fata Morgana has indeed rekindled my interest in the medium though so thanks.

  14. I have been a user on the forums for quite some time and you can tell who I am often by my posts as they usually go on for far longer than is necessary. That said as much as I used to love visual novels I've been having difficulty getting back into the medium. I've been playing regular video games far more often and I haven't finished a visual novel in quite some time. I am looking for a visual novel to rekindle my love for the medium. Now I've read a lot of visual novels so I would like to limit the games to the last two years. I want to know that the medium is not stagnant and that it can still surprise me with quality, meaningful and/or fun experiences. I do not mind the genre so anything goes. I am unfortunately rather bad at even basic japanese so please limit the games to english translated games released (via legitimate or fan-translation) within the last two years (2015-2016). I plan to try Da Capo III come end of January but in the mean time I would like to try something else. Please help me try to rekindle my love for visual novels. Thank you in advance for any suggestions you give me.

  15. I bought this and Rance on a whim the other day after what I can only assume was a holiday high (excitement) after seeing one was released and one was coming soon. I was hoping Da Capo III would release by the end of 2016 but was sad when it didn't but it got pretty damn close so all's good. I was not expecting it that early in 2017. I am excited for it and I have to agree with what people have been saying. Mangagamer has come a long long way from when it first entered the market. Hell it's essentially the main visual novel company of choice these days since they release games uncensored/uncut/at a decent speed/no drm/quality and quick, and generally seem to know how to sell to the consumer and what we as consumers actually want. They also have found a means to appeal to the story oriented fan and the fap fan. Hopefully this game actually ends up being decent.

  16. I just bought Rance and pre-ordered Da Capo III (hopefully not a mistake?) so I'll get around to them at some point in time. I'm still trying to play through Koiken Otome though so when I eventually finish that I'll be able to go to one of those.

  17. I am currently in the post game for Final Fantasy XV and while a lot of people will probably not care for it I actually really enjoyed it. The biggest problem with the game comes from the fact that some of the story comes from either books or notes in game or through other forms of media (brotherhood anime and kingsglaive). The game also has a ton of plotholes but that's to be expected of FF. I really liked the villain and would actually consider the villain among the great final fantasy villains. Hell 15 is probably in my top 10 now and that's with it still being a somewhat rushed product although I feel until it gets all the updates and dlc I can't say where in the top 10 it actually belongs just that at the moment it will be there. I have to say after playing 15 the franchise itself has been redeemed from the mess that was the 13 trilogy.

I'm in the post game but I'm going to probably give both WoFF and Type-0 a try in the near future. I've also had an urge to replay essentially the entire series so I'll probably be stuck in Final Fantasy for a while.

I am also still trying to decide whether or not Fate/Extella will be worth purchasing. Haven't heard a whole lot of opinions on it.

  18. Let's plays of visual novels should be encouraged so long as they are commentating or analytical in nature. Visual Novels are a hard enough medium as it is to get new people into let's plays broaden the horizon. Now that said I do think it also hurts the industry as well as helps it. It helps the industry as a whole but hurts the sales of the particular vn someone is reading. It would be a lot smarter for companies to give youtubers or streamers the right to play one route of their choosing.  Visual Novels require a full playthrough of at least one route to show what they are capable but they also need to keep some stuff back to give people an incentive to purchase/read it on their own.

  19. Excellent set up for the prefunida thus far and any potential qualms I had about the game have been addressed very neatly in their prefundia page. Honestly I'm set on backing it my only issue lies in the potential release month. If it goes up in Dec/Jan it will have to contend with gift shopping and and cash drought from holiday shopping. I think this might not be the best time to have a kickstarter. I'll put enough down for a t-shirt and the game (think that's about 100); I really hope they can make the 160,000 goal. Hell it would be even better if they could make the 500,000 goal but I find that rather unlikely sadly. Looking good in the preliminary stage will just have to see how the full blown kickstarter goes.
