I dont support Sekai Project kickstarters because there's not much communication with them post-launch (if the campaign actually gets funded) plus their tier rewards suck ass. They just don't reward you hard enough despite being a loyal pledger. You are already making me wait for 1 year or more.... so at least suck it up and give me some incentive to fund your shitty campaign, Sekai Project.
Other than Muv Luv and Kyuuketsuki no Libra, I haven't done shit to assist kickstarting VNs. Because it's easy to predict when a project is gonna flop like a fat kid doing slip n' slide when the funding has been struggling on the first 2 weeks and last 2 weeks.
I want to know what I'm investing in and always want constant communication with project starters in all the details even if it's just letting us know like where the money is going like marketing/PR campaigns, translation status, and stuff. Heck, I'll take a picture of the cute voice actresses signing autographs like what onomatope*/@MiKandi Japan have been doing with Libra over nothing. It really gives me a peace of mind when something is shown and effort is being put into something no matter how small.

MercyZombie reacted to kyrt in VN reading club - June 2015 (Yume Miru Kusuri)
Honestly Yume Miru Kusuri is one of the former gateway vns...it has a good amount of plot, sex, decent art, decent music and is short enough to keep most people's attention it has a few different characters and chances are you will be able to appreciate at least one of them. Now whether the vn is good or bad really depends on what you've read prior. To someone just starting out this is a great visual novel and it was for a lot of us who read it back when it first came out before there were a whole lot of good visual novels available for reading.

Before fan translating ever really took off visual novels were primarily only able to be bought via JAST USA, (Mangagamer had not yet come into existence) and fan-translations were in infant stages with even Fate/Stay Night only being in trial stages and the only real fan-translated visual novel available for reading being Tsukihime.  Kana Little Sister had issues when it was released, Ever 17 while brilliant had translation errors, censorship, and a few other small problems thanks to Hirameki, and really there were very few story emphasized visual novels at this time. YMK is the visual novel that changed that as far as company translated visual novels went. Yes it may have had a ton of ero scenes but they were done in a way that helped emphasize the overall plot. JAST really went out on trying to push the title and even tried to emphasize that this was a classic from Japan and a much more plot driven title. The game released in April of 2007 in english  so the visual novel is quite old compared to what a lot of people have read and has not aged overly well in the advent of the rise of fan translations and better titles released since then but when you look at it in the context of what else was released prior to it you realize that YMK was a pretty good title for the time of its release.

    Pretend that Keisuke posted this:

The final patch is out, and you can find it here! Merry Christmas!

Perhaps the easiest way to purchase a copy of Noble☆Works is through Amazon. Note that Yuzusoft does not have a downloadable version of the game, and it officially ships only within Japan, so you will need to make use of a mail forwarding service or something of that nature, assuming you live outside Japan.

Thank you to Keisuke because I'm awesome (this portion written by Fiddle); lead translator/image editor Fiddle; our other translators Secchan (who is also responsible for kicking off the translation), KiritoCy, Dark Blank, Solo Spieler, and Exiled; last-ditch translator Ephemeralist, whose extensive knowledge solved numerous complicated situations; our editor Twoo; TiagOfVarela and Decay, whose beta testing efforts went above and beyond to eliminate many a typo and fix awkward or ambiguous phrasing; Eclipsed, who wrote a detailed walkthrough for Noble☆Works on Fuwanovel; and OriginalRun, for his various forms of moral support.
If you experience technical problems, you can ask in the comments section of the Downloads page or in this topic.

I mean, really, just look at the classroom

Both the red circles are probably the typical "Did you watch the TV-drama yesterday/listen to that new CD"-conversation.
The green circle tells the story of "What's the matter, Desk-kun?" "I will never get Ponytail-san to notice me! It's hopeless"
Orange is a nichibros sketch about to happen.
And the guy in the blue circle is probably thinking "Wow, the girl talking to Desk-kun sure has a nice backside."

    Oh, this.
    I'll quote myself:
tl;dr it would be giving way too much credit to feminists or whoever else to think they are the reason why we can't have shitty boobs games in the west or that they have any sort of censorship power. This, in my opinion, is either some attempt by Koei to discharge themselves from the responsibility of not bringing the game over here or a blunder from their facebook page manager (who is clearly not very articulate in english).

Unfortunately Edison doesn't play a role in this one, as far as I know, so they don't play up that rivalry at all. Although it does feature Florence Nightingale and Wilhelm Reich.
Most of you know who Florence Nightingale is, but I'm sure many of you have never heard of Wilhelm Reich. Reich was an Austrian psychoanalyst, active from the 1920s until his death in '57. He worked under Freud and gained some recognition early on. But his theories quickly became heavily politicized. He had The Mass Psychology of Fascism published in 1933, after which he made a hasty exit from Nazi Germany. He was highly critical of fascism and, interestingly enough, attributed the rise of fascism to the repression of the youth's sexual desires. This political philosophizing caused some alienation in the psychoanalyst community, but it didn't end there.
His next work, The Sexual Revolution, was a controversial work that was practically pseudo-science. It merged ideas from marxism with psychoanalysis and theorized that the source of all neurosis is the lack of "orgastic potency" in subjects. He was actually somehow even more obsessed with sex than Freud was. He came up with a theory surrounding "orgone," a supposed universal energy that drives all life, which is sexual in nature. And he came up with a bizarre form of therapy where he would have his patients strip down and he would prod and massage them in certain ways that would allow them release repressed emotions and sometimes also reach orgasm. Yeah. Suffice to say, he became a bit of an outcast, and almost no one follows his teachings anymore.
So, what does this have to do with Gahkthun? Gahkthun's Wilhelm Reich is the leader of The Academia's Governing Council and actually has a fascist bent, which goes against the real-world Reich. The impression I get from his character bio is that he seems to be all business, being the kind of guy who has no time for sex and never talks about it. But what he does have in common is "Orgone." Gahkthun's Reich seems to be in search of this cosmic force he believes to be the manifestation of bliss itself. It will be interesting to see how many other ways the character may relate to the real life figure.
I know this post was largely apropos of nothing, but I like it when games utilize historical figures like this and I enjoy comparing them to the game characters. It's nice to know the background of these people before going in and hopefully some of you found it interesting as well.

MercyZombie reacted to KuroganeHomura in The Market of VNs Around the World - Discussion
Moege generally aren't something I personally go for, but I can definitely see a lot of untapped potential there. Case in point, Princess Evangile seems to have done really well for MG. The western market is probably big enough by now to sustain a few releases of that kind each year. Pretty sure someone's going to fill that gap sooner or later. There's money to be made there, after all.
As far as running out of good games goes, I don't really think that's all that much of an issue, except for kickstarters. It's somewhat hard to succesfully kickstart a localization of an unknown game, even if the game is really good, moreso if the game is good but not really amazing. I do think the market is big enough to sustain a few releases per genre for a number of genres each year, though. And although the Japanese market favors moeges, it's not like that's the only kind of game released there, or the only successful kind, even. Case in point: https://twitter.com/shigeo_h/status/662615531426476033 https://twitter.com/shigeo_h/status/663283963264274432, and that game is anything but a moege. Put another way, the output per year of Japanese releases is still far greater than the output of localizations, so even given a slant towards certain genres in the original market, there's still a big enough pool to pick from so that you don't need to localize crap just to avoid running out of games to release. For that matter, while the pool of really awesome VNs may be rather small, a game doesn't have to be absolutely amazing to sell well enough to turn a profit. It just has to be good. There's many more good VNs than amazing ones. And indeed, a VN doesn't have to be good or even just decent to do well - case in point, any of the Sakura games.

So all in all, I'm not worried. At the current size, we won't ever run out of games to localize. And if the market does grow further, it'll eventually be big enough to influence the decisions made by Japanese devs on what kind of game to produce - or allow devs that already produce games suited to the western market to give their games a higher budget since they can count on additional sales from this market.

Agreed. Ironically the anime was much better because it just condensed down the little bit of the story that actually did have progress which is why I've recommended it. Those parts have delicious suggestiveness in them. The manga has the worst progression ever beyond what was portrayed in the anime - that being "none", followed with the least satisfying "ending" in history.

You would be lucky to even find a noticeable spot on your bed. Some girls don't even bleed at all. Usually the blood just sticks on the guy's manhood and is easily cleaned with a tissue. Yeah this virginity blood is something that VNs exaggerated horribly.
Oh my god, that semen release issue is something I should add on my list too. A guy being able to cum 5 times in a row without a minute of of rest may look like a stud (or one heck of a premature ejaculator) but I've never seen that happen irl. I love Majikoi and all but this is what makes go, "What!?" when Yamato comes 3-6 times in a row in a single H-scene. I don't think there's an H-scene across all games where he cums less than 3 times. Let me know when you find it.

Kinda both. I mean for example if you absolutely hate NTR and rape, you won't be turn on sexually right? Or is this one of those "you may be saying you hate it, but your body is honest" type of scenario cliche. Man, I've heard that freaking line at least 50 times now in many forced/rape/NTR vns.

The grimdark dystopian future is finally here, but it's not nearly as rad as we all thought it would be. Instead of cyborgs, flying cars, and smokestacks perpetually shooting jets of fire, it's lawyers, impenetrable legal codes, and people being threatened with fines for having an opinion on the internet.

Official: Bokuten (yes, I'm the one lone bastard that is waiting for this), Clannad (No valid string, please make a ticket about it) and Seinarukana (get your ass moving Jast).
Sadly it's getting harder and harder to keep the hype going for fan translations because many of them end up not seeing the light of day.
Looks like Noble Works might actually be done soon though so that is something to look forward to.

MercyZombie reacted to Fiddle in Thoughts on long common routes
A disproportionately long common route detracts from the relationship one has with a particular heroine, in my opinion. I believe that it should serve as an introduction, albeit an extended one, that allows the player to reasonably choose his heroine by getting to know the selection better. Therefore, I prefer a game in which the common route doesn't exceed half of the total playtime. There are plenty of good games that defy this, like Hoshimemo and Rewrite, but I think it would be better if they were constructed around a shorter common route.

MercyZombie reacted to Suzu Fanatic in What are your H-scenes preferences in visual novels?
I am pulled towards H content, but I find i can live without it as well, even if slightly disatisfied by the lack of.

How can I explain it? Before reading Fate/Stay Night - I would NEVER have considered reading a VN without Hscenes, I just automatically paired up the two as a requirement to be "worthwhile".

Then, when I was almost through Fate route, I was completely taken by surprise when a H-scene popped up - I had completely forgotten I was reading a eroge.

Since then, I've opened my eyes and realized I could probably find other titles that can be good, even without any h-scenes. (I read Clannad after that, and found that belief to be reinforced).

I still like to have it in my VNs, for both pure and dirty reasons - but if the story is good enough, I can live without it.
