Since you are new to visual novels, I shall wholeheartedly recommend one of my favorite visual novels of all time to you; CLANNAD.
The price is quite high, I know, but now that it has finally been released in the West, I can't help but recommend it to everyone. ^^

Welcome! Glad to hear you like the medium. It is really awesome. To answer the question, where to buy VNs.
The western market is slightly limited, but there is still options out there. For instance, Denpasoft has a few novels, including Grisaia no Kajitsu, one of the most popular translated VNs. There is also Mangagamer, where you can find plenty of good, translated novels. (And also others that are ... less good, more "porny". But hey, to each their own.)
Also, although most people don't like VNs available on steam, there is still plenty available there. Do keep in mind that 18+ content is not allowed on steam, and so usually these are censored versions. For the most part, the 18+ versions are available on the previously mentioned sites instead. Examples: Nekopara, Grisaia no Kajitsu, Princess Evangile etc.
There is of course also the option of buying the Japanese game through a 3rd party who then ships it outside Japan, though this method is often very costly. (Think 100$+ for certain titles.)
My reccomendations to start of would be:
If my heart had wings (Steam, can install a restoration patch to get 18+ content)
Grisaia no Kajitsu (Denpasoft 18+, or steam for all ages)
Princess Evangile (Mangagamer 18+, or steam for an all ages version)
Shuffle! + Tick! Tack! (sequel) (Mangagamer, 18+)
Eden* They were only two on the planet (Steam, or Mangagamer for a 18+ version)
Planetarian (steam, all ages version only)

Confession: I have been searching for a job for about three months now, and have turned up literally nothing. It's really starting to put a drain on me... and it's not like I don't have any experience ether. :/
On a more positive note, my step-dad offered me some temporary work with him for some renovation stuff, which is quite similar to what I did at the beginning of the summer before I got that guided walk thing at a local parkway. So, it is something, but I really want to get my feet on stable ground and get an actual job.

Edit: I would also like to mention that I would literally pay infinite money to play a version of the game where every character is genderbent. Just sayin'.

Better than what I do. I also sit there quietly and awkwardly, but I have a really weird smile on the whole time and I never can seem to wipe it off. All I can imagine is them thinking that I have a fetish for getting my haircut or some shit. xD

Confession:
I usually don't confess much but here's to Linova/Eclipsed or others who might be interested.
I'm glad I was able to break the 1000+ miles barrier. It always felt like this huge wall in between us. It felt like it didn't matter how long or how often we talk. I know that if it had stayed online, nothing would have came out of it. It only served to maintain the interest until something happens. Given the distance there was always uncertainty, of whether I we'd work out "IRL" and there was no way of answering that online (Even 8+ hours of skype calls won't get close to answering that). Since Cyr won't be able to do anything about it in a reasonable time, it was up to me. I had to act and get it together. Luckily I had already been saving up and preparing for my move months even before I met her and had interest in that part of the US. After awhile I was ready, but I won't just move there with nothing to back me. So I absolutely had to have a more-than-minimum-job lined up already before the move. This was really tough. Given the job market and the fact that I'm so far out of state. Most hire locally and won't bother to look online. Only one came up and it was super risky. It was a Tuesday when I got the notice for the interview, which would be held that Friday. I have to pay hundreds of $$, fly for the weekend and back, take a day off from my current workplace --- all without reimbursement. It was higher pay and huge company so I thought why not. I came out disappointed that weekend because the job i interviewed for wasn't what I was expecting it to be. Though long story short, I ended up getting it because they opened up a new (different) position for me.
Anyways,
When it came to it, the 1000+ miles drive was nothing. Gunned it in 2 shots. I guess I'm lucky Cyr's not in another country or something. But I'm leaving away established familiar place, friends, and family for the sake of this move. Looking for an apartment was tough. Lots of challenges but it helped me tones that I had $$$ saved up and Cyr saved my butt so many times.
P.S: Unfortunately, though everything worked out and I'm super satisfied with many aspects of my life right now, my new job is making me unhappy. I applied to places (near me of course) already 2 weeks into my new job. I have one interview this week in field that I want to be in. (proof that I can easily get interviews if I'm part of the local pool... as with entry-level jobs). Hopefully I can get it and it's a better job, so I can start thinking about enjoying the moment and looking into the future.

Congrats on your 500 posts! And congrats on being able to put up with my cynical bullshit, not sure which one is the bigger achievement here. 

Damn, I legit teared up a bit like the little bitch I am, I wasn't expecting to be first :D. Anyway, keep up at it pine tree-san I'm sure that a lot of stuff is still waiting to happen.

Voluntary. Though it coincided a lot with my other goals in life like moving out of state, cheaper standard of living, getting my own place, getting another job (which pays more), new experiences etc. So it was a really easy decision and relatively easy to pull off since I was ready at the time (and even easier with Cyr's support).

So, hi fuwa. Im now 500(501) in and being a fuwa "elite" and all I thought it was the perfect occasion to make a post like this.
I have been here for around 11 months now so maybe I should have made this post for my 1 year anniversary as Eclipsed did, but hey im doing it now.
Although necroing a dead meme is simply not enough for me so im doing it originalrun style and going to thank people here.
You see, when I joined I had nothing, I was a bum on welfare, I also felt like shit in every sense of the word, I was shit, the world was shit and my situation was overall shit. But, there was exceptions, for example Visual novels and the community that came with it.
So here im sitting now nearly 12 months after, I got into the education of my dreams, I have actual energy, I have a cute girl im seeing atm and  my appartment is actually clean for the most part lol. I also got over a pseudo social anxiety I build up from being a borderline NEET at that time that I finally got rid off, which helped me start some new and old IRL relationships up again. The community helped me a great deal to make me reach what I wanted and overcome my fears. Suddenly I had people I could talk to anytime if I felt like shit and I had whole skype chats that wished me luck with my entrance exams, which gave me so much motivation and willpower.
So thanks fuwanovel, I love everyone of you, here is to another 500(499) posts!
Oh, before I leave Im gonna make this short notice for people I have talked with, again, im sorry if I didnt include you, you're a part of this community as well and that means that I love you to some extend no matter what I have said to you beforehand <3
