I love how Clephas has just given up on recommending titles that are translated. Well, if you don't mind untranslated suggestions, I recently wrote a whole blog post about how strong the atmosphere in Sayonara wo Oshiete is. So I would definitely recommend that.
For translated titles I am in agreement with Deep Blue, Swan Song is fantastic.

Thanks for the thread Rose, this is surely an interesting topic enough for me to exit my hermit cave and write a post here again lol.

Anyway, although I am Vietnamese I have been living and studying in Russia for many years. That's why I ended up being in these two communities at once. Interesting to compare those two: while the majority of Vietnamese visual novel readers prefer moege and stragedy-based eroges (like AliceSoft games), the audience of visual novels in Russia mostly consists of females (not the case with anime/manga though) and therefore otome novels are more dominant there. I might actually be wrong about the Russian community though because I also only passively stalk their forums and stuff, rarely engaging in conversations, but it is a fact that the biggest translation groups focus on otome novels. Maybe a Russian fuwanoveler could help me out with this.

On the other side, I actively participate in the Vietnamese VN community, and I can say that the only big visual novel forum hosts many successful fan translations. There are many good translators and editors there, though the community seriously needs more good hackers.

I'm kinda curious about other VN communities outside of the English language, so I made this thread. The JP>EN translation is what we're mostly about, but what about other languages? We can get an idea from VNDB but we don't know much about say, which VNs are being translated to French, German, etc. I added the "/community" to the title because without a fanbase, translations will hardly happen if at all, so it's something relevant to the discussion as well.

I used "native language" instead of "country" because you know, some countries share the same language and all that. Dunno, it felt right for me.

Anyway, how is it in your native language? Are there dedicated websites for VNs? Are there translation groups actively working to bring content for those who can't read in English nor Japanese? For those who are native English/Japanese speakers can also speak their mind here if they feel like it, though it'd be nice if we could avoid having the same arguments that every discussion about this had in the past.

Rackshen reacted to Ayana in Subahibi translation completed now editing is all that remains
Part of what makes SubaHibi so highly regarded is that it manages to make itself accessible to any type of reader despite also showing off a rather fair amount of ideologies to its readers. In other words, you don't have to be well-versed in Wittgenstein or Kant or any such philosophy (or even the literature references) to enjoy the story because it was constructed to simplify those ideas to its readers. Although if you want to understand aspects of SubaHibi on a much deeper level then the material is there to be studied.

But we did manage to publish the site so come check it out! http://skyspear-translations.webs.com/
Also, our faithful translators have continued to work on the prologue despite being busy with the real world themselves. I will be updating the line count shortly

    A little update:
We have begun to slowly move forward in translating. The common route *should* be done by the end of the year but we do still need a few extra TL/TLC. Also we have a website coming soon, a link to that will be added within the next few days.

Edit: Oh and we have scripts successfully re inserted as of yesterday, that might be important news . This is one of the very first lines in the game

Supreme Candy ~Oudou niwa Oudoutaru Riyuu ga Arun desu~

Supreme Candy is a Halloween themed game by Makura (the makers of Ikinari Anata ni Koishiteiru). The old team announced that a partial patch was to be released bin time for Halloween 2014. Sadly, Habluka who has been carrying the torch so far has declined to cooperate with us... I intend to translate this with much more dedication than has been previously shown in order to produce a quality project for all of you to enjoy.

    Description
Tonami Yuu is a somewhat awkward adolescent who keeps a certain distance between himself and others because of a traumatic incident that occurred when he was a child. One day he chances upon a jar of candy labelled 'Supreme Candy', a miraculous treat that allows him to change his physical age. Using this opportunity, he transforms himself into a child and enters the neighboring school's playground, where high school girls of his age play innocently with children. Yuu believes he has finally found something that will let him get close to other people again... (VNDB)

    Announcing

    FuwaSims - Fuwanovel's First Sims 3 Story

Come one, come all -- this is the chance of a lifetime, the chance you've been waiting for! I am about to produce a short Sims 3 story, and I'm looking for volunteers to put their names onto the characters! If you're interested in naming (or putting your own name) on a character, let me know via response!

    How the Game/Story Works:
I will generate a few Sims randomly using the randomize buttons and play with as much of a hands-off approach as is possible. Any interaction on my end will occur only if it's agreeing with a sim's current desires, needs. Where this'll go, nobody knows!

    What I need from You:
If you want to name/put your name on a Sim, let me know! If you have any other ideas for setting/etc. or if you have a particular challenge, please let me know!

Aiyoku no Eustia is definitely worth a try. It is the best August game out there.

Recommendations huh? *Fanboy mode* Try Supreme Candy. This is by far my favorite eroge. Half light half dark atmosphere, witches, magicians, hidden main heroine, epic final scenario, pumpkins and candies - just everything you need! Plus, the protagonist is a damn bad-ass!
The main plot is not as mentally deep as Eustia, but is much more complicated and stunning. It's a surprise how they can mix lighthearted comedy and romance with brain-melting main plot. And I LOVE EM ALL!!!
I can rant 2 pages of essay right now, but you get the idea. Now go and pick up the eroge!

Somehow it turned into one of the most embarrassingly pretentious things I've ever made, so I can't really tell myself if it's good or not.

So... what do you think? It is currently set as unlisted, so are there any changes I need to make before I upload the final version to Youtube?
(Or should I simply bury it under a mountain and forget I ever made it...?)

User ratings do nothing. In your profile, in the top right corner, you will see 5 blank stars. Members can go to others profiles and rate the members. I assume the stars will average out those ratings. To rate, you simply click the number of stars.

As for what they do.... not a thing. But it sure looks pretty.

If you don't mind ones that are only in Japanese, I can name thirty or forty truly epic games, but I'll start with ones that are just generally good: Harumade Kururu (this game starts like a harem nukige and turns into a serious mindfuck), Evolimit (any action game by propeller really), Ruitomo, Comyu, Dies Irae (for its unrepentant melodrama), Hapymaher, Grisaia (the first one), Haruka ni Aogi Uruwashi no, Jingai Makyou, Komorebi no Nostalgia, Otome ga Tsumugu Koi no Canvas, Sousei Kitan Aerial, Tiny Dungeon series, Draculius, Tsuisou no Augment, Vermillion - Bind of Blood. I could go on further, but I won't.

Rackshen reacted to InvertMouse in Anime/visual novel creepypasta
This started from another thread I have created here. I for one, would be interested in reading some otaku themed creepypasta . If you're in the mood to write one, feel free to post it here! To start things off, I'll share a Hyouka one I came up with a while back.

    * * *

This happened a while ago, but I was too distraught to talk about it until now.

Hyouka was a series that aired during a recent anime season. If you’re a Twitter friend of mine, you’ll know I really like Chitanda. Many people do. Her insatiable curiosity is just so lovable.

That all changed after a particular Hyouka episode I watched.

If you type in “Chitanda empty eyes” on Google Images, it’s the first result you’ll see. That’s all I’ll say. I no longer remember which episode this took place in, and I never want to know. Please, just, keep the episode number to yourselves.

It happened on a Friday night. I was hoping to relax after a week’s work by downloading the latest Hyouka episode. Truth be told, the episode was average, but Chitanda was charming as always, so that’s okay.

About three quarters of the way through, Oreki said something to Chitanda. What he said, I can no longer recall. I wished I could just forget this entire episode. Too bad that was impossible. Not after what I saw.

After Oreki spoke, the scene cut to a close up of Chitanda looking delighted. For some reason, her eyes were void of highlights. I assumed the artists forgot to paint them in. That was when my screen froze. As I was forced to stare into Chitanda’s empty eyes, a deep groan came through my headset. It sounded like “気” dragged out for eternally. Something like, “kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii”.

The image of Chitanda grew more pixelated with each passing second. Eventually, glitches covered the entire screen. Then, the voice vanished, replaced by a silence that haunted me even more.

The screen turned black, and a line of Japanese text appeared. My Japanese is far from great. Still, I knew enough to know what it said.

    “Curiosity will be your undoing.”

Below that was a date. I never got a chance to read it, because VLC Player closed on its own. For a full minute, I sat there and gazed at my downloads folder. There was no way that just happened. Despite knowing it was a bad idea, I decided to check out the episode again. But the file was no longer there. Well, I do have lots of files in that folder. I must have just missed it. No. Three more checks, and the file was still nowhere to be found.

That weekend, I came down with a fever. One that took me a full week to recover from. Afterward, I asked several close friends if they’ve had the same experience while watching the episode. They always see their shows through the same source as mine, after all. But they all said no to my question.

I never rewatched that episode again. Hell, I considered dropping the entire series. In the end, I did finish the show, and no more activity occurred.

Still, I must say I like Chitanda a little less than I used to.
