That's exactly why eroge is great, you don't really have it in any other for of media. You either fap or you have story.
 
And this is where eroge comes in, you can enjoy some school romance, awesome heartwarming stories and tearjerking events and without a need to use another content, you can also have some satisfying sex scenes with the character you became to love through the story and romancing - which makes it closer to the ideal life experience.
Even in real life you don't want to go on a date with a girl and then ditch her and go have sex with a prostitute to "just" satisfy your needs - you'd rather if you do it with the girl you spent the last few days with and with the emotional impact the experience is much stronger. And same way it works in VNs, you spend some time with the girls and you don't want to go read nukige or H-manga just to get satisfied, you want to have the emotional relationship make your sexual experience even better.
And for people who gave up on real life its the only way to have that kind of sexual experience influenced by real emotions that you built in the game.

Personally, I play a lot of visual novels specifically for the H-scenes. I like quite cutesy stuff, so I'm glad that there are cute, sugary vn with sex scenes in, rather than just having the hardcore stuff to choose from. I also like to get to 'know' a character before the sex - what can I say, I guess I'm just an ol' romantic - so I also like having the sex scenes anchored in some kind of story.
On the other hand, I also love a good plot, and I have had times when I've really been jolted out of it by a random H-scene that seems thrown in just for the sake of it. For example, I'm currently playing Kara no Shoujo, and am totally invested in the mysteries and how the story might turn out. The H-scenes so far have added nothing to the story, and I've just clicked through them to get back to the main point.
So, I guess I do have an issue with H-scenes that are just there for the sake of it. It would be nice if works with a genuine story to tell didn't feel they had to have sex in them to sell. I actually think it's a great idea when studios such as Key do all-ages and adult versions of their games.

I think everyone's covered the unlockable routes question. I really like unlockable secret character routes (most recent one I played was in Enzai), it's exciting to not know what's coming and not have any opinions formed about a character yet.
I play every route because I'm a completionist. I really wish I wasn't sometimes >.<

There can be plenty of reasons.
 
Most common is for the sake of making you want to play more because this route is locked therefore it's special (at least that's the train of thought they want).
Sometimes it's for the sake of the plot. Happens a lot with true routes because these are the ones that reveal everything and thus are locked until you gather all the information (or something along those lines). For example: Refrain in Little Busters and Yume's route in Hoshimemo.
Others are just pure fanservice like Harem routes and things like that since they're better than normal routes they're locked until you complete a certain amount of routes in order to be rewarded.
 
All of them are based on the keyword: Reward.
I think that's the jist of it at least. 
 
I usually tend to play in order to unlock everything to see if it's worth it. But i'll skip ones i dislike.

It's just entertaining and cute though the extremly long kiss scenes sometimes make me uncomfortable. But still worth it.
I'm probably enjoying it a lot more because slice of life is my favorite genre so that helps a lot when fighting lack of story.

I graduated in Summer 2012 and started looking for jobs in Japan (which btw is very difficult if you're not already living there). I finally found something and came over in October 2012. Since then I've been living and working in Tokyo. I've been at the same company the whole time, but I'm leaving next month to work as a freelance translator full time~

It depends what brands you use I guess XD You can find a lot of imported brands at big stores like Loft and Tokyo Hands, but they are more expensive. You will have to get used to using different stuff. I get my toothpaste sent from the UK because Japanese toothpaste has much less flouride, and I also get deodorant sent sometimes. It's best to just try and adapt to the readily available brands here as it will be easier and cheaper.

What kind of information? XD The biggest red light districts in Tokyo are probably Kabukicho in Shinjuku, Dogenzaka in Shibuya, and Roppongi. There's lots of stuff on offer there, but expect to spend a lot. People at my work have run up 300,000+ yen tabs ($3000) in one night going to hostess bars... Anyway, if you have any more specific questions just let me know! I've not been to a soapland or anything like that but I've been to some love hotels and host clubs, and know lots of guys who regularly go to strip clubs and hostess bars.
 
 
Yes there are! If you can get into one of the big banks or manufacturing companies then there are opportunities there. But usually they are looking for a) someone who speaks some Japanese or b) someone with experience in the industry already. My boyf works in PR at Toyota and he got in without any industry experience, but he does speak Japanese. Another way is to get into a multinational company in your own country, and then request a transfer to Japan later. Regarding video games, there are probably a lot of openings for programming but I'm not sure what else. I know Sony regularly hires foreigners (I have a friend working there) but again they're mostly looking for people who can speak some Japanese. You should give their site a look though.
 
Learning about Japanese language and culture while abroad.. well the best way would to be enroll in classes if you can. Other than that, use the web and all of the amazing things it offers. There's tons of Japanese people out there who want to practice your English, so try and connect with someone via a language exchange site. You'll have no problem finding someone  
 
 
Tokyo is of course amazing. It's also the most foreigner-friendly city. I also lived in Osaka for 3 months and really enjoyed it there too. To be honest though it's really up to you and depends on what you are looking to get out of your stay here.
Regarding the culture, again it depends on you. Research as much as possible before you come - of course there will still be culture shock, but it's good to be prepared. I didn't find it too difficult, but Tokyo is a very cosmopolitan area, and if I was out in the countryside I'm sure I would have to do a lot more adapting.

I remember I went with a friend to Toyama and we were staying in a family-run Japanese ryokan (hostel/inn type place). However, we got COMPLETELY LOST on the way there due to wrong GPS coordinates, and were eventually saved by a super nice old guy who phoned the place for us which turned out to be quite far away. He then drove us (two complete strangers, and foreigners to boot!) somewhere to meet the people from the ryokan, and they then drove us the rest of the way. Seriously, I can't imagine anyone doing that in the UK! I also had an amazing time on Yakushima, an island off Kyuushu. My boyfriend and I were looking for somewhere to eat but everywhere was closed, until we came upon a tiny little local drinking place. We were kind of wary of going in as some of these small places aren't too welcoming of foreigners, but everyone was lovely to us! So basically my travelling experiences (which include Hakkone, Nikko, Fukuoka, Osaka, Nagano, Yufuin, Kagoshima, Tanegashima, Yakushima) have all been great, but I don't know what it would be like to live there. Hopefully one day I will find out though!

Hehe, to be honest I don't think Japanese people are more intrinsically polite than anyone else, they just have certain manners and ways of acting that seem very polite on the surface. You might like some of these customs, but there might be some that rub you the wrong way. Personally, I operate well within Japanese culture, although there are sometimes cultural differences that sometimes frustrate me such as people not speaking up for themselves in the workplace. Believe it or not there are many people who live here but are very bitter about Japanese people and culture - if you look at the Gaijinpot forums there's a lot of hate - but I just don't understand why they stay here if they hate it so much :/

As a white female I get men approaching me quite often, under the guise of 'wanting to learn English' haha.  I would never ever strike up a conversation with someone on the street except maybe in the nightlife areas like Roppongi, both because that's not in my nature anyway, and I don't think most Japanese people would react well to it. That being said, if you're in a drinking place like an izakaya or a bar then you definitely can! I've had random people (usually middle aged guys with their wives XD) buy me food and drinks and stuff~ Oh also, being female helps :/ 
 
 
There's no limit that I know of (of course aside from your airline's standard luggage limit)! I've brought tons of stuff back in my suitcase, and shipped things back too. The only problem might be with 18+ rated material, but I've also carried that kind of thing out of the country with no problem

I like any company that is trying to get VN over to the West, BUT I was appalled at the quality of translation for the game Enzai. Seriously, they're charging money for this, and yet it's littered with mistakes. It was like it didn't go through any kind of quality check at all. The only other title of theirs I've bought is Saya no Uta and the translation for that was good, so maybe Enzai was just a one off. I'm still annoyed about spending my money on it though!

This is a lot of fun to think about Here's my criteria for my 'ideal' game:   MOST IMPORTANT: A game that isn't clear-cut from the start. Not necessarily a genre-shift, but something where you don't actually know what will happen, or who will end up together. For example, there is the possibility of a yaoi route, or of two of the heroines falling for each other, or of the protagonist dying halfway through - nothing is off limits! Genre should be horror, mystery, psychological, utsuge or nakige. Not too much comedy, and nothing slapstick. Relationships develop believably. No childish, deredere characters. No loser protagonists, please. It's probably too much to ask, but more believable H-scene voice acting where the girl doesn't sound like a cross between a baby and a strangled cat. Hello Everybody,   Two weeks ago I held a little shindig on Skype to outline site priorities and projects, as well as take questions from site members about Fuwanovel’s future.  It was a little unusual, but it was a blast to get together.  Thanks to everybody who participated.  Shortly after that little meet-up, I got very sick, and then many problems arose in my graduate school applications as well as in my university.  It’s taken me a long time to get back on my feet, so as always, thanks for being patient with me (especially when you send me PMs and I don’t get back to you very quickly -- I promise I’m not ignoring them!) We shouldn’t kill ourselves to take care of these items ASAP – it’s important to keep balance and enjoy the holidays/time off of school/etc.)   First, a review of our major projects/products.  There are five core projects associated with Fuwanovel, and I added a sixth during the skype call: Games and game uploads Front site Forums Visual Novel Aer blog Social Media (NEW) Introduction to Visual Novels Kit   In the call I assigned a “project head” to each project: someone who has been involved with the project for a while and who will be responsible for: overseeing the project’s progress, providing updates on the Fuwanovel Improvement Board, posting ways members can help with their project on the Improvement Board, and recruiting people to help them.   I also laid out a road map for each of the projects.  All of this new information is displayed below:   Games and Game Uploads Project Head: Kendjin Road Map: Organize seedbox (no small matter) Update old torrents (especially those with the old piracy video, or which need new patches) Brainstorm a good system by which people can suggest new games, and look into ways that members could help upload them Prioritize games which should be added next, and add them   Front Site Project Head: Nayleen Road Map: We have lots of proposed changes.  Nayleen and Tay need to powwow and make priorities   Visual Novel Aer Blog Project Head: Tay Road Map: Lots of proposed work, but Tay needs to talk with Aaeru first   Forums Project Head: Forums Staff (moderators) Road Map: (largely keep on carrying on) Continuing to moderate Discussion of specific issues to be handled on staff forums  Do a board-wide cleanup (each section needs to be combed for topic moves, general cleanup, merges, unanswered questions, etc.)   Social Media Twitter -> We don’t have access right now. Facebook Project Head: Naomi Road Map: We’ve seen a lot of success.  Good job to everybody involved and thank you for working so hard.  We’ve over 6,500 likes! We have almost hit 7000 likes! Naomi has come up with a plan to increase facebook likes.  She’s still ironing out some details, but part of the Facebook Project Head job will be to itemize all the to-dos, and seek out help for making them happen. Share the workload!     New Project: The Introduction to Visual Novels Kit Project Head: Tay We’re going to develop a product that you can download, put on a DVD or thumb drive, and hand to a friend. We’ll make an all-ages version, and one with some 18+ content. It will contain:  A PDF Introduction to Visual novels  3 VNs of different types which are good intro VNs (Planetarian, Katawa Shoujo, Clannad, etc.)  A Fuwanovel Memory book – a second document where people write why they like VNs, how VNs have helped them in life, their favorite games, etc.    PDF Introduction to Visual novels Explain the genre  Introduce the 3 games (what they’re like, their characters, plot, etc. -- help them decide on which to play first) Game walkthroughs for each of the 3 games (for those concerned: we'll include a note about the philosophical qualms some have with walkthroughs worry not)  Recommendations for each type of game ("If you like Fate/Stay Night, you should try...") Explain concepts like Japanese Locale, patching, the translation process, different categories of VNs, Japanese Vocab (senpai!) Tell where people can find VNs – where buy legally and where obtain non-licensed games Not JUST a Fuwanovel product, though we’ll clearly be associated    Thus, there will be three sub-projects to making this happen:  Intro to VNs PDF  Fuwanovel Memory Book PDF  Choosing the 3 games  All of this will need to fit on a thumb drive and/or DVD for easily spreading the Gospel.    The VN community at large can be toxic and sick. Fuwanovel’s different. We’re friendly, and approachable. We are the perfect place to introduce people to VNs.   If we do a good job, make a great product, and can spread it well, I believe this is something that will long-outlive Fuwanovel and make a huge difference in bolstering VN sharing.           Lastly, Thanks.* (*Taken from my speech notes) Everybody who made it out for the Skype chat, thank you.    Beato, Down, Demon Lord Harry Kinomoto, ilegend, Kendjin, Luch, Meru, RETransInternational, Steve, zhurai – for being amazing friends and staff-mates, for tirelessly working on the forums, and for all the good memories.    Kaguya for being amazing at special projects for the last forever.
