Opinions on the Sakura games.

Hope it's not the latter. People are missing out on other amazing VNs out there just because they had a horrendously boring experience with Sakura series. This is exactly why Ive been preaching that VNs are not just pretty girls, sex, and cliche romance settings.

Tried some, I'm indifferent towards it. I don't hate them but I don't enjoy them ether. They have a nice art, but it's too short and it definitely needs more work on the conversations and characters. But if I have to chose, I would say that I enjoyed it more then those sex filled VN's with mind-breaking heroines themes, which I don't like. All in all, there are better ones out there, it's a shame for those people who form opinion of VN based on Sakura series.

I honestly doubt that anyone unironically getting introduced to the genre via buying Sakura games would know what a VN is.

With the knowledge of what a VN is, swiftly comes the realization that Sakura games are not worth paying for.

I don't understand why so many people bought this game on steam when people there say visual novels are infecting the steam store yet they still support the most hated visual novel franchise in steam to date? Don't see the logic anywhere.

I don't think those are the same people. The steam userbase is huge you know

I believe they're shit, and that a better future for the Western VN industry stands beyond them.
'Cause of their bullshit, Visual Novels are going to look rather bad... especially when LPs cover them.

Still, I believe there is hope.
Clannad is along the way, and Muv Luv is kicking ass in its Kickstarter.
Now that is the stuff we need on steam, and to be covered on the internet.

Of course though, I'm not going to waste my money on stuff like that, so basically, my opinion is just :salt:

I don't think Muv Luv is going to be the savior some are hoping for. How many people are going to hear of the massive kickstarter success for this dark mecha series, and decide to try it out on a lark? They'll proceed to boot up Muv-Luv Extra and I think you can imagine how that will go down. You need to have tolerance for some real bullshit in order to get through that.

edit: Sakura Spirit is a better game than Muv Luv Extra. I genuinely believe that. MLE is that bad.

Maybe in a vacuum, but supposedly Extra has some foreshadowing for Alternative that makes Extra retroactively better.  But it's still a stretch, and I haven't confirmed it for myself

I don't think it is going to be a saviour, but I hope it will brighten up and improve the image of Visual Novels in the west.
Still, I will agree though, you have to go through some bullshit to get to the meat, and I bet some will drop it, but the ones with patience will get something good. (And I'm sure the steam community and such will tell them to keep playing)

I'll admit, I don't mind Extra, sure, it is a little bit long, but I don't mind it. It introduces some important things before throwing you into the fire. Hell, it might have been the creator's intention to do so. Once again though, a little too damn long to wait for darkness and mech goodness.

I won’t be. Life’s too short and time’s too precious to wade through hundreds of thousands of word of tedium, foreshadowy shit it may be, to eke out a modicum of entertainment later on. There’s too many other great stories to be read for that.

A lot of Japanese VNs are bloated to the hilt, i.e. they tend to be full of meandering, meaningless stuff. If someone wants to drop it, I won't be pressuring them to continue. Encouraging the consumer to keep reading is the author's job.

There is none. Neither Muv Luv, nor Clannd will help change anything; You see, those games aren't really that interesting. To be honest, Clannad is really boring (I'll be faithful to my opinion - if you want Clannad, you'd better watch the anime adaptations) and Muv-Luv isn't any better. I can easily bet none of those series will even surprass Sakura games in terms of sales; Clannad hype is long over - people wanted it badly years ago, translation came way too late; Muv Luv will be bought only by a handful of tryhard weebs and sci-fi fans.

If you wish for the best, you'd actually pray for vn's to remain somewhat niche - having larger coverage, but still something played only by a handful of people. I can assure you - you don't want eroge to become as popular as our standard western games, and it's not because of porn. Popularity simply hurts the medium and if you still don't believe, just take a look at the japanese industry.

Indeed. Games become overhyped trash the more fanboys/weeabs gather around them. Same thing for visual novels unfortunately. As much as I hate Sakura fanboys on steam, Muv Luv/Clannad white knights are probably just as as bad, if not worse.

Well as long someone enjoy the game in my opinion it has serve it purpose. The reason people gets angry with certain popular games it's because they're overhyped and many consider it annoying when people are trashing other games but they are attracted to games who aren't actually that good but all of a sudden they got very famous when there is other games that exist who are better but not famous and yet they consider these games inferior for some reason.

Yeah. It takes a lot of dedication to get through visual novels and if they aren't interesting you, I'm not gonna stop them from dropping it.

I love Clannad's anime series and I haven't played through the entirety of the VN but I can see how it can be boring to you. We all have different opinions on the matter. Haven't played Muv Luv but I've heard Extra is utter shite and I'm not looking forward to playing through it to get to Alternative. Sakura gets all its sales from the fanservice aspect which Clannad and Muv Luv don't focus on that. I also want VNs to stay niche, but a little bit of popularity isn't gonna hurt it much.

Just cause a game is overhyped doesn't mean it's trash, it just means you are expecting too much of it and if you don't like it, you're gonna call it trash.

Since this is related, I leave this here:

Winged Cloud about sakura games:

"We will just release them without sekai. From my personal feeling most of the people at sekai just disagree with our ecchi / hentai games. We where just feeling very awkward working with a company where a lot of people straight out dislike our games. Its really regrettable but they prefere more "serious" storys and many of them just dont like our games."
