On the topic of SonoHana, I almost wonder if they specifically wanted to shy away from releasing any translated titles out of fear that they might not sell well. I remember seeing a post from years back saying apparently some of the people translating SonoHana stuff at the time tried contacting Fuguriya about localizing some of their stuff officially, but didn't hear anything back. So maybe they were a bit unsure about the market coming in, which is why they wanted to start with an all-ages title that would sell more. Either way, there's still a few big untranslated SonoHana titles they could easily go for that would sell, namely https://vndb.org/v10700 , https://vndb.org/v12645 , and https://vndb.org/v16262 , and I doubt they'd have any problem finding people willing to translate them.

Did he even do this? If you're talking about pun jokes I guarantee you the people who translate for Frontwing would probably do the same.

Yeah, it was definitely better than what everyone feared for. It's been awhile since I last read anything Grisaia, but the translation is still very obviously an imitation of koestl's style. That said it was good in it's own right, so kudos to Frontwing for managing to actually find themselves decent, English native translators in Japan.

Getting dressed is something you do basically every day, and as an action it holds literally no meaning. In the context of a relationship, sex holds a lot of meaning, for some people more so than others (vast majority of VNs only use pure-ish heroines which this heavily applies to). The only reason those mediums you listed portray sex differently is because they'd run into problems if they showed certain things so they have to go into sexual scenes with that in mind. So basically, the act of two people having sex is inherently sexual, so the only way you're going to make a sex scene not "fanservice-y" is by censoring things. It's also worth noting that genres like LNs or anime are no less sexualized than VNs are, but characters having sex in those genres is a taboo, so as a result you end up with harem shows where the guy never picks a girl (only when the story ends do they pick anyone), and stuff like Shinmai Maou no Testament where the characters basically go around making each other orgasm every episode but strictly avoid penetrative sex.

Eh, I feel like the replacements were still just as silly. What, the magical dolphins swimming around when Rin and Shirou touch each other, after she removes one article of clothing just to make things awkward? As abrupt as they are, the replacement still ends up seeming abrupt since what they give up instead is something a lot more import than one's virginity. As silly as the scenes are, though, I have to admit it isn't all that silly to imagine that you could transfer mana through bodily fluids (including semen). Plenty of diseases work like that.

Yeah, the thing is, there's only five, and they're all short simple sentences. They aren't terrible but, eh, I'm not expecting anything amazing based on them. I think it's a shame this won't have more Makina, because they said they're trying to imitate the original's translation. I'd be interested in seeing if they could imitate Makina's style in the original to a decent effect.

The translation is entirely Lemnisca and actually pretty good, for what it's worth.

I don't think I've seen a VN translation group have a donation page (besides the LOE group, but that doesn't really count). Some anime fan-translation groups do or have had one, but I want to say some of the tools they use to sub anime cost money or something.

That's the entire point of it. Cut out something that doesn't really need to be there so they can put a lower-priced version. If you cut out something important (voices), you might dissuade people from buying that version, but if you cut out something miniscule they might bite. Granted I think the idea is dumb and I doubt they're going to make more money because of it.

Because they can do it on steam. It's impossible to section off different parts of the game in a physical release, otherwise they'd probably try something like this. On the topic, I think it's interesting to note that Akabei isn't cutting the voices like they did with G-Senjou. I'd reckon this is because that idea didn't work out nearly as well as they thought it did, probably because people actually value voices, so now they're going to cut something more insignificant to the overall game so they can justify making a lower-priced version.

I don't think any localization group would be dickish enough to pull something like that, honestly. The biggest incentive to use a fan-translation over doing it over is that it saves you a whole lot of time. Though, either way, it seems to me like localizers aren't really interested in pursuing titles that are already/currently being fan-translated, unless the people involved ask them to pursue it.

It's a good thing. Having the majority of translation being done officially encourages a standard of quality you won't get with an active fan-translation scene. Not to mention the incentive of money gives people a reason to stick in it longer, translate faster, and translate more stuff. Anime fan-translation has basically died down to where it's only a few groups that still do actual translation, or changing of translation (using the official TL as base). That's basically where VNs are at now, where all the people who used to be in fan-translation now work on official stuff (much like anime translation too). Give a few years for the current non-dead projects to finish or die and you'll probably see the fan-translation scene practically dead.

"My Slutty Older Sister Can't Be This Pure" Technically slut means someone who goes around sleeping with whoever, but people also use it to just describe women who act like a "temptress". Also regarding the whole ビッチ thing, "bitch" used to mean slut, as in the person is essentially a female dog in heat. That's where the Japanese word comes from, but the word has evolved over here to mean other things now.

I've never played it nor do I care to look into this, but the VNDB lists Sonico as the only character in the game. From what I've heard it's also just a game where you act as Sonico's manager or some shit, so maybe she's the only voiced character in it? Also, I'm not sure how much you know about the voice actor, but she's really, really famous among cosplay and convention-going people. Her twitter has 517k followers, so just imagine someone with that big of a following being on your game. They're not aiming for a steam audience, they're aiming for the casual anime fans who might not know anything about visual novels, but see Jessica Nigri on it and pick up interest in it.

Because the VA for sonico is a very famous cosplayer, which is pretty the only reason she was chosen to do the dub of the sonico anime (she's literally never voice acted anything else). Throwing her name in there means she can promote the game, which would give it a lot of exposure it wouldn't have had otherwise. None of the other English voice actors can give them that, so it's not worth it to spend money on them.

I don't think the main game is that badly done. The translator is the same person who did G-Senjou at least, so there shouldn't be any sort of Ixrec-level mistranslations in it. The editing could use work, but that's not enough of a problem in and of itself to require retranslation.

I don't think any of their newer titles are worth noting, which is probably why they're hoping to cash in on their two hits with the western market. Specifically, that Boku no Hitori Sensou was hyped as the new Looseboy game, yet it kind of flopped big time.

Uh, you do know that Akabeisoft is the one who didn't want an 18+ version? Either way, I'm a bit curious as to why they decided to drop Sekai. Maybe they actually wanted to kickstart G-Senjou, but Sekai didn't? Now that'd be a funny story.

He's just an attention-whore. Also considering what he's doing basically just amounts to childish trolling, I think it's not a surprise that a large amount of people think he's a dick. If he actually released the translations for the other routes that he "supposedly" had done, then nobody would care about him anymore. The only reason people still talk about him is because he purposefully holds onto these translations he's apparently finished so he can continually do stupid jokes like this where he teases people into believing he'll release them, only for him to go "lol nah, it was all a joke." I think the editor for Hoshizora no Memoria posted about him in a reddit thread, if you want to hear from someone who talked with him personally.

The concern is that it means developers will just half-ass the sex scenes and throw them in because they have to. Specifically with Chrono Clock, the content was apparently so bad the developers apologized and promised to change things with their next game. The new game by the Grisaia team also had complaints about the same thing, yet if you look at something like Grisaia no Meikyuu, by the exact same people, you'll see the erotic content is actually really good while still being separate from the main story.
