It seems this is only for certain issues relating to the incompleteness of DirectDraw on Win7+, so it's not guaranteed to solve your problem. A VM (or plain install in dualboot) of XP will still provide superior compatibility.

You can use Ctrl+C in a MessageBox to copy the contents for translation/posting here/etc. The message says something about an error (エラー), but you probably already knew that.

That import is not present in older versions of msvcrt.dll. You can try downloading a newer version and putting it in the same directory as the program.

IF NOT EXIST C:\Windows\SysWOW64 To whoever wrote that: Do not depend on Windows being installed in that directory, or even that drive. Use the appropriate environment variables instead.

It's easy to run wine in JP locale (if you have the fonts etc. installed already): LC_ALL=ja_JP wine

Depends on the timezone... it has quiet times too.

Try running in XP compatibility mode. If there are any special instructions to install fonts or make other changes after installation, ensure you have followed them.

16-bit support is one thing that seems to have come back in Windows 8, for some odd reason. MS has a history of removing things with each version, it's one thing to add new features but to force unnecessary changes only causes problems. Either way it'll be difficult to convince the users to switch back, although if many VNs you want to play don't work on Win8, maybe they'll reconsider... currently XP (32-bit) is probably the most compatible.

Renaming would be a safer approach... Some engines can be sensitive to NVRAM (saves, configuration, and other persistent state) corruption, especially if they've crashed before.

What have you tried? Another suggestion is to try running in compatibility mode for XP or 2K.

Keeping your current rate the translation should be finished slightly before 2014.
