    Moooooore answers~

I live in central Tokyo and unfortunately don't have any experience of country life. I have visited some places in the countryside though and had great experiences. I remember I went with a friend to Toyama and we were staying in a family-run Japanese ryokan (hostel/inn type place). However, we got COMPLETELY LOST on the way there due to wrong GPS coordinates, and were eventually saved by a super nice old guy who phoned the place for us which turned out to be quite far away. He then drove us (two complete strangers, and foreigners to boot!) somewhere to meet the people from the ryokan, and they then drove us the rest of the way. Seriously, I can't imagine anyone doing that in the UK! I also had an amazing time on Yakushima, an island off Kyuushu. My boyfriend and I were looking for somewhere to eat but everywhere was closed, until we came upon a tiny little local drinking place. We were kind of wary of going in as some of these small places aren't too welcoming of foreigners, but everyone was lovely to us! So basically my travelling experiences (which include Hakkone, Nikko, Fukuoka, Osaka, Nagano, Yufuin, Kagoshima, Tanegashima, Yakushima) have all been great, but I don't know what it would be like to live there. Hopefully one day I will find out though!

Ah I remember the NOVA thing, sorry you were caught up in it Do you think you'll come back to work in Japan again?

Yes, it's definitely possible to come over to work as a teacher and then move onto something else. I know a lot of people who started out that way

Hehe, to be honest I don't think Japanese people are more intrinsically polite than anyone else, they just have certain manners and ways of acting that seem very polite on the surface. You might like some of these customs, but there might be some that rub you the wrong way. Personally, I operate well within Japanese culture, although there are sometimes cultural differences that sometimes frustrate me such as people not speaking up for themselves in the workplace. Believe it or not there are many people who live here but are very bitter about Japanese people and culture - if you look at the Gaijinpot forums there's a lot of hate - but I just don't understand why they stay here if they hate it so much :/

Mostly no. If you're a foreigner then you might get people approaching you to chat which can be nice, but can also be annoying. As a white female I get men approaching me quite often, under the guise of 'wanting to learn English' haha.  I would never ever strike up a conversation with someone on the street except maybe in the nightlife areas like Roppongi, both because that's not in my nature anyway, and I don't think most Japanese people would react well to it. That being said, if you're in a drinking place like an izakaya or a bar then you definitely can! I've had random people (usually middle aged guys with their wives XD) buy me food and drinks and stuff~ Oh also, being female helps :/

There's no limit that I know of (of course aside from your airline's standard luggage limit)! I've brought tons of stuff back in my suitcase, and shipped things back too. The only problem might be with 18+ rated material, but I've also carried that kind of thing out of the country with no problem
Yeah, Akiba is pretty awesome!! Lots of huge anime adverts everywhere, anime songs blaring out of the shops, girls in maid costumes trying to get you to come to their cafes.. I'll take some pics next time I'm there~

Thanks, I will definitely check these out.

About the rape, it's sad that when you want to find one of the more specific things (fetishes in this case, I guess?), especially if it's something crossing into the weird territory, it almost always gets paired with the equally weird or ever worse things that you find rather disturbing on the other hand. This is a perfect example of that.

Haha, it's probably strange, but I actually enjoy well written bad ends. I mean the ones involving death and the like - haven't encountered any of the sexual oriented ones, and I'd like to keep it that way. To give an example, I really liked the bad ends in Kara no Shoujo (man that VN was hell without a walkhrough, I think I accidentally got every single bad end possible o.O), or Grisaia had some really nice ones, especially Amane's. And well, Corpse Party is one big compilation of bad ends, some of which are kind of lame, but some are oh so amazing.

EDIT: Haha, I've looked up the VNs and just realised that I've actually seen the anime adaptation of Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteiru.

I know some people like rape and stuff, but I can't bring myself to like it, and the same goes with NTR or ganbang (even if the girls are ok with it). People have told me to not take it seriously because it's just fiction, but meh, I can't stand it anyway xD *Pretty vanilla*

Take a look at it this way:
There's 24 hours in a day, you use 8 to sleep, you use 4 to 8 hours working or/and studying, 1 to 2 hours for personal needs (eating, showering, etc), and add some other hour for commuting from/to work/places. You can add some time to hang out with friends too (if you do). You have, then, like 3/4 hours of free time. Would you spend them all translating instead of enjoying your well deserved time of rest? I wouldn't ^^U

This is an estimate, as there are people that don't work, or don't comute (job at home, or can walk a bit to get to the workplace/school), or that sleep less or more than 8 hours, or just stays at home all day because personal reasons, or that etc.
I took this example from Danny Choo (a guy that manages a website and a Japanese show), as he explained like that the few hours he had to learn Japanese when he was younger.

I think the general consensus is that we either need a separate subforum for suggestions, or leave things the way they are. I'm not sure which one I'd prefer, but a single thread for it all doesn't seem like a very good solution to me. If multiple people ask for suggestions at roughly the same time it can get really confusing as to which posts refer to whom.

Sooo, I live in Japan! And I thought there might be some of you who had questions about what life is like here

The very brief version of how I got here: I'm originally from the UK. I fell in love with anime & manga when I was about 13. When it came to make my university applications, I decided to choose to study Japanese~ I spent 5 years at university, 1 of which was spent at a university in Japan. I graduated in Summer 2012 and started looking for jobs in Japan (which btw is very difficult if you're not already living there). I finally found something and came over in October 2012. Since then I've been living and working in Tokyo. I've been at the same company the whole time, but I'm leaving next month to work as a freelance translator full time~

I know there's a few other members who live in Japan, and I'm sure many people have visited, so please feel free to share your experiences

Thanks for all the welcomes!  Experiences in Japan, huh?  Hmm...  Well I've lived in Okinawa for 7 years, and my wife of 5 years was from Nara.  I can't speak much Japanese, though now that I no longer have a live-in translator, I'm starting back up on that.

One thing to remember is that Okinawa isn't really Japan.  Well it is, but in the same way that Hawaii is the United States.  It's a place that Japanese people go to on vacation(traffic gets absolutely horrid here during Golden Week).  The culture is notably different from what you would find on the mainland.  In addition to the original Okinawan culture, the island technically belonged to the United States until 1972, and with the relatively high number of military bases on the island, there is a greater American influence in the areas surrounding those bases.

Festivals occur here quite frequently since we get both Japanese and Okinawan occasions to do so(as well as a couple of western influenced ones like Oktoberfest...  I think the islanders just like festivals).  I used to go to them fairly often wearing a jinbei, but sort of stopped after my marriage got more contentious.  Now that I'm single again, I might start going more often.

I have traveled to mainland Japan a couple of times to visit my then wife's family and do some site seeing.  Nara, my ex-wife's hometown, was the capitol of Japan during the 8th century(known as the Nara period), and is the site of Todai-ji, a temple that houses the largest bronze Buddha in the world.  surrounding that temple is a park where deer roam around free.  They have no fear of humans, and will come right up to you if you have food(stands along the park sell biscuits for 100 yen).  Some of the deer will bow to you for food, and some more aggressive ones will nip at you until you give them something.  Also, apparently my daughter is ridiculously cute or something because tourists kept wanting to take a picture of her.

Not too far away from Nara(about 40 minutes by train) is Osaka, the second largest city in Japan.  It's a port city, and the sushi there is delicious, with some rather generous serving sizes in a lot of places(I got served nigiri with the fish drooping all the way to the plate;  you couldn't see the rice at all).  Another common dish I love there is okinamiyaki, a sort of  fried pancake with cabbage, seafood and pork in it(there are different styles in other regions, but I love the Kansai style best).  I went shopping in Yodobashi Umeda and Nipponbashi(also known as Den Den Town, and similar to Tokyo's Akihabara, albeit on a smaller scale), though I didn't really end up buying anything.  While I was there, I visited Osaka-jo(one of the many castles in Japan) and Universal Studios Osaka(where I had the very odd experience of watching Hello Kitty sing and dance to a very upbeat rendition of the Marilyn Mason version of Beautiful People...  Japan is a weird place).

The last place I visited on the mainland was Kyoto, another former capitol, and the site of a ridiculous number of temples.  My ex and I rented kimonos while we were there, and I would like to go on record to say that I hate kimonos now and will never wear one again if I can help it.  I had to take tiny steps the entire day, and the weather was fairly cold(we went in November).  We visited a few different temples there, most memorably Tou-ji and Kiyomizu-dera(which has an amazing view) and then had dinner and some drinks with one of my ex's coworkers -who just happened to be visiting the city on the same day- at a British-style pub called the Pig & Whistle.

Overall, I enjoy living in Okinawa, though I might try to transfer to one of the mainland bases in the future.  I would like to visit Tokyo at some point.

SieghartXx reacted to Flutterz in Why are forums so anal about old topics and posts?
My guess would be that it's because older members, who perhaps had already posted in the topic all those months(years?) ago might post again on it after it gets necro'd and that'd look weird, or the topic might have died simply because there was nothing left to discuss, and then someone who only read the first and last pages makes a point that was made a million times in the middle pages. Plus even if that doesn't happen, knowledge and opinions can change drastically over time, so it might be better to just start fresh.
That said, any forum that forbids necros and forbids repeat threads is just stupid - it's either one or the other, or neither, like it is here.

Hey everybody, Tay here.  Ziddy, the project lead over at Rinjinbu Translations (who also happens to be one of my favorite people in the VN world) needs our help!  Many of you probably know Ziddy through the efforts of his excellent youtube channel.
It sounds like the team working on the OreImo PSP game needs translators:

Rinjinbu Translations (Oreimo PSP) is currently looking for JP-EN Translators! To date, we have released 3 partial patches (Kuroneko, Kirino and Ayase) and we require more translators in order to continue our work from the first disc and beyond!
You will have to go through a translation test before we accept you! If you are able to prove your translation skills using existing translated material though, that’s accepted as well.
Please contact me (Ziddy) at #rinjinbu, irc.rizon.net or e-mail me directly at dizzyziddy at gmail dot com if you have any questions.
If you aren’t a translator, please help spread the word!
There are a lot of us looking forward to this game, and I hope that available translators will flock to this project and offer a helping hand.

If you’re interested in helping our friends at Rinjinbu, please contact them through theirrecruitment page on their website.  If you have questions, please contact Ziddy at #rinjinbu, irc.rizon.net or e-mail me directly at dizzyziddy at gmail dot com.  The fate of this project is in the hands of willing translators — please help out!

When I was browsing a thread, I though about how convinient it would be to have a "load more posts" option to that thread. It had a lot of pages, and I wanted to see the next entries without having to open a new window or changing the current page. Just an idea, though.

If space is a problem why not making the user's awards button able to hide/show or just maximize/minimize the chosen awards instead of redirecting to X's profile, we wouldn't be able to show off our awards (i don't have any but talking this way makes it easier for me) but members
could show them off in their signatures.
Personally i think all that's needed to do is making the "User's Awards" button smaller.

Okay, here's my idea. Like Steve, I believe in not showing all of the awards at once- We should let people choose three to show in every post and have the rest appear in their profile.

Besides that, do not have the black "user awards" box while still showing the awards. Like that, there's basically no problems with the size of posts. Like this.
Also, forgive me for the bad job with paint. It's just so that you have an idea. I think this size is quite reasonable. Oh, the scribbles in black are to not show the IP of the user, in case anyone feels curious.

SieghartXx reacted to Steve in Get Steve back to VNs (aka "recommend me VN" topic)
So as it turns out I didn't FINISH a visual novel in a year (last finished 31 January 2013). Since then I only played 2 routes of Rewrite, 1 route of Hatsukoi, started playing common of some VNs and never got back to them even though they seem nice (like Shinikiss etc, some of the 2013 released projects).

Quick summary why I didn't finish some of the examples from above as it will help to understand the requirements I have for a VN.
Rewrite: I played 2 routes and started common for 3rd, BUT there is SO MANY CHOICES AND MINIGAMES that the skipping of common and getting to the next route takes so long that it just bored me to quit. Sure there are few "extra" scenes that I didn't have the first time but those are not often that funny or entertaining as the remainder of the common route, especially because I don't know where exactly in the common I am. And most of the time is just watching quickly flashing images.
Hatsukoi: This time the choices are pretty bad. There is also tons of them but I even got it wrong on my first playthrough that I had to use Japanese walkthrough to get into the correct route. I started playing the second route but I didn't want to alt tab all the time to look what choice I need to select while images flash through my eyes.
Shinikiss: I liked the beginning but I didn't LOVE it, it was interesting but not as entertaining to hook me up to so much, It seemed pretty slow paced to me, maybe its the way the characters speak. Same with some other VNs.

Yet it was possible to hook me up so much to a game before, with Hoshimemo I was supposed to go to sleep but then I ended up playing 6 hours because there was constantly some mystery happening, some characters being introduced, some comedy. Same goes for rewrite, the first time playing that game I even said that Rewrite has the best common route of any game. But unlike Rewrite, in Hoshimemo there is like 4 total choices so skipping to the next route was really quick, the choices are straightforward, you literally cannot make mistake there.

So with that said, these are my requirements:

    Required traits:
    - Voiced heroines, protagonist is preferred to be left unvoiced and side characters can be unvoiced but I want main heroines to have voice.
    - English translation in a good state
    - Very catchy common route that will hook me up from the start, even before the Opening, something like Hoshimemo, Rewrite, even Flyable Heart
    - Low amount of choices, about 0.5 choices per hour (for example Hoshimemo first few playthroughs require 6 choices while the common route is more than 12 hours long - less then 1 choice per 2 hours)
    - Easy choices to understand what girl I'm going for
    - Happy endings that don't have tricky choices, even better if there are no bad endings
    - Moe looking characters like in Hoshimemo, Rewrite and such, not necessarily lolis or pettan, just cute like Komomo for example (who has large boobs but I still like her very much)
    - Awesome personality of characters that separates them from each other, again for example like Komomo xD
    - Good protagonist that I can immerse with
    - Great story overall, making me want to play so much to find out the truth behind some mystery
    - Good music fitting the situations and reinforcing the feelings of them
    - Focused on love and friendship so romancing like in Hoshimemo or bromancing (not to be confused with yaoi) like in Little Busters, all hail Masato xD

    Preferred traits:
    - A loli with a route, can be just one of them, if its the true route it might be even better
    - Good looking interface like menus and anti-aliasing, you look at that all the time so it needs to look nice, take Rewrite for example, awesome interface
    - Comedy scenarios, it should be serious at parts but funny at others
    - True end with happy ending
    - Mystery that makes me want to continue playing the game, nearly required but maybe there is something else that can replace the mystery
    - H-scenes with good production, yes I put it only in preferred and not required as I am willing to try a non H if all the other required traits match

    Unwanted traits:
    - Gameplay that would only distract me from the actual story
    - Pure horror story that uses some monstrosities and such
    - Gore or too much blood (pools of blood), if someone gets stabbed or something it should be fine
    - Too much violence that is not comical (like battle system of Little Busters is fun and so like that it is fine)
    - Yandere heroine, I don't like violence so I don't like yandere either xD
    - Yaoi in any form whether it be H or non-H
    - Trap heroine, that's the worst xD
    - Other weird stuff like tentacle rape or weird monsters in sexual acts
