oh my fucking dawkins, i just watched Ponyo and it is without a doubt my new favorite film of all time.

there was literally not a single moment where i was not either grinning uncontrollably, tearing up with joy or sighing out of pure bliss

it was also the first piece of media besides key vns to get me past the sob-point, which to me is like an ultimate seal of quality

so much for target audience, eh?

I had exactly the same experience with Ponyo. It was the most beautiful rendition of the little mermaid ever - a story I otherwise couldn't care less about.

Important stuff in Nisekoi only starts happening around chapter 180-esh. There was a time where Nisekoi was really stuck on a status quo but recently it's started to change. Chapter 200 was the biggest thing to happen in Nisekoi so far.

For reference, the 2nd season of the anime ended on chapter 100. It also was a terrible adaptation, skipping over really important chapters that revealed a big chunk of the plot regarding the locket and the keys. It also skipped over all of Haru's arc where she falls in love with Raku, which was really stupid considering she should have been a main character in season 2.

Stuff does happen in Nisekoi, it's just that the anime skipped over it to adapt filler episodes, so that's why it feels like nothing happens.

Most Nisekoi fans discourage watching season 2 and suggest just jumping into the manga because that way the narrative isn't completely butchered.

Thanks. I've avoided the manga like the plague though since waiting for one more endless romantic comedy in manga form to eventuate would likely kill me (I scanlated negima for something like 100 chapters and have yet to recover from that fail). So while the anime is a lesser adaptation of the original source material (and well duh how rare is it for an adaptation to equal or surpass the original source), I'll stick to that till they get off their sorry arses and finish the freaking story with another season or 2.

Meanwhile, for me: I'm starting to get really annoyed with Nisekoi because nothing ever happens. I might simply drop it right now (I'm ~10 episodes in, I think), but I'll probably watch the remaining episodes and then fume about how nothing ever happens in it for a while, and then move on, hopefully to something that makes progress and has an ending. I like shows with endings.

Thanks. I still enjoyed Nisekoi but I get really annoyed at lack of conclusions in shows and Nisekoi was no exception though evolution does happen... at an excruciatingly slow pace but there's no end in sight for the anime so far... and in fact was about to start writing a thread about something along those lines.

  4. Screening the following shows now that I haven't seen that may make it to the wife-watch list.

    Natsume Yuujinchou

    Seto no Hanayome

    Bamboo Blade

    Usagi Drop

    Shirobako

    Haikyuu

    Mouretsu Uchuu Kaizoku

    Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou

EDIT: I should make a list of what has been successful to watch with my wife already.

  5. Now watching Natsume Yuujinchou. It rated really well, especially in the later seasons so I'm hopeful. So far it's been good and seems to be improving, though I doubt it's something I'd bother rewatching with my wife. Hard to find things that tick boxes for both of us (like Kaleido Star did which I'm rewatching with my wife currently now).

When did Kaleido Star get good for you? I watched an episode or two of it a long while back and was just kind of puzzled; I didn't get the appeal. Maybe I should give it another shot and watch for a bit longer?

Although, since you mention it, I should really watch Cross Game first, since I'm 99% sure I'm going to love it whenever I finally get around to trying it.

I quite liked KS right from the start - in that "makes you smile" kind of way. I'm a sucker for well executed feel-good shows. But by no means did I feel the urge to watch many episodes in a row back then. The show grew gradually on me after that and probably started watching long stretches of episodes in the last arc of season 1 (up to  episode 26). The first season everything goes well and is an easy watch. The second season has a lot more drama and new rivals which is initially irritating but like any well-executed storyline, that drama serves as a counterpoint for character development and it pulls it off really well. Ironically the irritating rivals made me start marathoning as nothing makes me happier than watch the heroine win (I'm a sucker for good endings no matter how obvious they are, provided they're pulled off well). The second season doesn't remotely go the way I expected.

EDIT: Finished it. It was excellent by the end and well worth the journey. Highly recommended.

As for Cross Game - anyone who's lived a life without watching this series has missed out. After I made my wife watch it, we hadn't even finished the series (50 episodes) and she asked if we could rewatch it immediately after the first viewing.

Got to episode 19 of Golden Time. Can now confirm I'd recommend it. I can also confirm some characters show pretty unlikeable sides sometimes, nobody's perfect, and I like that.

Addendum: After finishing it it is worthy of note that for a series full of drama I liked it surprisingly lot. That ending, however... Thank god I'm all for that sort of thing. 9/10

Glad you liked it after (I believe) my recommendation. I'm a sucker for a satisfying completely unambiguous romantic ending without the usual tropes and Yui Horie being VA was a complete surprise for me since she's doing less and less lead romantic roles these days so it may well be one of her last "young" romantic heroine roles. I absolutely adore her work and love any voice acting she does. I found GT very satisfying on so many levels, and my wife enjoyed it too.

  8. This is far enough into the season to declare the survivors this season that I will continue to watch to the end. As predicted it's overall pretty meh but there are still shows worth watching. Bear in mind I watch almost everything so for me to drop it means it was pretty bad. I even watch the shorts. Best shows highlighted.

    • Ao no kanata - decent
    • Prince of stride - okay (watching mainly for Kanazawa VA)
    • Musaigen no phantom world - good fun (Hayami VA puts it up another notch)
    • Kono suba - great fun
    • Haruchika - okay
    • Active raid - bare pass
    • Shoujo tachi - okay
    • Boku dake - excellent
    • Dagashi kashi - okay (a let down cos it should have been awesome but is only okay)
    • Pandora - silly but still okay
    • Bubuki bunraki - bare pass but the computer aided animation is annoying
    • Luck and logic - okay
    • Dimension W - great
    • Schwarzesmarken - okay
    • Mahou shoujo - silly but decent
    • Ojisan - okay
    • Oshiete galko-chan - great
    • Nijiiroi days - okay
    • Ooya-san - okay
    • Gate S2 - excellent
    • Ansatsu kyoushitsu S2 - good

    Leftovers:

    • Akagami no shirayuki hime - still good (Hayami VA raises its rating)
    • Heavy object - still good

Shows I tried to watch and gave up on

    • Saijaku - wtf
    • Norn 9 - oops
    • Phantasy star 2 - ugh
    • Divine gate - wtf
    • Showa genroku - zero connection
    • Nurse witch - oops
    • Hai to gensou - snorefest
    • Sekkou boys - meh
    • Yamishibai - meh
    • tabimachi - meh

After taking a 20 minute break and definitely not procrastinating, I watched Grimgar 4.  This show.. I am really on fence about whether to like it or not.  The novel was great, and the setting of the show itself is great.  All the character's are great. But the problem is the pacing.

It's quite okay, you don't have to force yourself to like it just because you like the original source material. I gave up on it because the anime is, well, dead shit boring.
