Does monster girl quest get any better?

So I decided to take a look at this oft referenced game and I found it fairly underwhelming so far. Does the game improve much in mgq2 and mgq3 or is it just the same thing over and over again with different monster girls?

Mgq2 is fairly better but Mgq3 is really good. It's worth it to play all the way to the end. I was also kinda surprised by the dullness in the first but it gets better.

The 3rd game will throw you a plot curveball, but it's not a particularly good one. It's really something anyone into fantasy saw 10000 times already... With femdom, that is. If you don't like the style of the first game, I don't see why you would like the other two- the plot is a pleasant surprise since I thought it would be just a nukige, but for the plot alone, you're better off reading... Well, any other fantasy VN, really. If you do enjoy the style of the game, though, I don't see why you wouldn't like it- it's a bit cliche, but it's not a bad plot.

No.

Pretty much. Also, don't believe the 'RPG' tag they slapped on it. It's the weakest RPG I've ever encountered.

I would counter this by saying that there is definite character development in MGQ2 and MGQ3, and that the RPG combat can actually be more challenging than most JRPGs.  Because there are no random battles, you cannot trivialize the combat by grinding levels.  While a lot of the battles are pretty straightforward, there are quite a few(especially in MGQ3) that require you to make good use of your abilities and carefully watch for enemy cues in order to avoid defeat.  Contrast with your average Final Fantasy game where you can safely avoid most special abilities and just power your way through fights.

It's not the best VN available, and it's certainly not the best RPG out there.  But neither is it something I'd call "bad" either.  As a light VN with some RPG gameplay that requires you to pay attention, it's worth a go, IMO.  It's not a particularly long game, in any case, so there's little to be lost in giving it a chance(except some lost SAN from some of the sex scenes).

you need luck and many retries to win some battles in MGQ on hard mode even though u do everything perfect

Not really. Besides the final fights, there's a point in the game where you can just spam that attack skill (forgot the name), use salamander, spam the skill again and morning star if the enemy happens to be alive. This (with very few variations) literally lead me through at least 50% of the game without using any strategy at all (and without losing) in hard mode.

Considering you don't have all of those skills for a large portion of MGQ3, I'm going to have to admit to some skepticism on that claim.

Granted, morning star comes pretty late (that's why I said with a few variations, but once you get the effect from salamander back you can trivialize 90% of the fights you'll see anyway) and you do lose your spirits right off the bat but the fights before you get them back are pretty easy overall. And when you start getting them back, it becomes a question of which spirit to use, which also isn't very hard- You don't need much strategy for the game overall. I can't remember getting stuck at any point, at least.

The largest difficulty with the harder monsters comes from watching for cues given in battle.  Some of the fights require you to switch spirits mid-fight, guard or counter at specific times and the like.  Then too in the longer fights, skill point management is important(though admittedly this does become trivial once you regain Salamander) since not having enough skill points when a spirit wears off can be an instant fight ender.

Not every fight in the game is challenging, but I felt that enough of them were that the game was more challenging overall than most JRPGs I've played(not counting optional bosses that exist purely to give compulsive level grinders something to do).

If all you want is challenging combat, play an adventure/action game. No level gaining, no grinding, you'll be in bliss.

Most of the RPG conventions stuck in the game serve no purpose other than enabling the words "RPG" to be stuck on the cover. The weapon shops, for example, serve no purpose. The towns serve little purpose. The combat is just a thinly veiled excuse to look at porn. The levelling system is a joke. I didn't like the game, but that's just personal preference. But when I say it's an incredibly weak RPG, that's a fact.

And this is why genres are a limiting way of classifying things.  It's not really an RPG so much as it is a lightweight visual novel with RPG elements that makes fun of JRPGs.  The shops serve no purpose?  The shops are literally a joke.  The game also makes fun of healing at the inn and other well established JRPG standards.  If you are trying to play MGQ as a standard JRPG, of course you are going to be disappointed, because that's not what it is.  You may as well get upset at a roguelike for not having a deep and engaging story.

Monster Girl Quest isn't for everyone, no doubt about it.  But it isn't without its charms, and if the question being asked is "does the game improve after the first game," then my answer has to be "absolutely."

*Grimaces* If it was a parody, I thought it was a pretty poor one. But that's more of a personal preference, I suppose.

How is the MC ducking into the weapon shop, saying "there's nothing in here better than my weapon", than ducking out again supposed to be funny?

Speaking of rogue like do any eroge rogue likes exist? I'm curious to see what it is if it exists

I haven't seen one.  From what I've heard, Sengoku Rance has permadeath for side characters that die, but I don't think Rance himself can die.  I googled "eroge roguelikes" and pretty much came up with nothing besides...this...thing...  But yeah, I don't think that one's been made yet, or at least has gotten popular enough to get a result in the first few pages of a Google search.

From the roguelikes that I've seen, most don't have sexual content because they want to either get popular enough for a wide audience to play (e.g. Steam roguelikes) and having sexual content would make that harder, or they just don't have it because it doesn't add to the gameplay.

Eeeeh, whenever he loses into battle he dies, actually. I think he's the only character with a 100% death rate when his squad dies (justified by the fact that he fights in the front line, so escape should be nigh impossible). After that there's a bad end scene and the game ends, though. It's not a roguelike, anyway.

The closest thing you'll get to a roguelike in a VN is Eien no Aselia. There's the acual perma death (with other characters in rance there's only a change, generally small), and you'll feel the permadeaths, since there aren't many characters you can use to fight at all. It has a deep story, fantasy setting, much planning, etc.

Sure, Rance can die, but that isn't "permadeath", since it's a failure state that just makes you load the last save.  Contrast that to the side characters that Zeno mentioned -- if they die, you can just continue on playing with them dead -- they stay permanently dead in your game.  If Sengoku Rance were really a roguelike though, whenever Rance died it'd make you restart the game from the beginning :)

Glad I wasn't too far off with Sengoku Rance.  I've never played it (it's a little too rape-y for me), so I was just going off on what other people told me about it.

If you're looking for a roguelike, head to Steam.  They have a crap ton of them, since they're getting pretty popular again.  If you want to be technical about it, they're roguelike-like, or rogue-lites, since they're not exactly like Rogue, but they're still good.  I don't think that there are many decent eroge roguelikes out there.

I definitely wouldn't call MGQ a solid rpg experience, especially considering a huge portion of the game is parody of generic RPG's. A lot of 'hero' quotes you'll get out of MGQ are rather critical of the term.

Anyway, I find it hard to... explain the game, really. I wouldn't really call it good as much as it is strangely addicting and somewhat satisfying at the end. MGQ 1 is absolutely the weakest part but it get's quite a bit better in 2 and a whole lot better in 3. The games also have a pretty solid central theme of beliefs and sacrifice that it merges into it's plot better then alot of VN's will, shockingly enough. It is pretty typical in places though, but whatever.

I definitely can't recommend going past 1 though if it didn't sell you. While it does get alot better it's.. still an expansion of the same.
