heavenlysf reacted to XReaper in Anime or VN? Which one do you prefer?
from my point of view the whole question is somewhat meaningless, because both are different kind of media, targeting not the same audience, as most visual novels require more of a understanding regarding the matter & their literary value is higher, animes on the other hand are supposed to be mostly light entertainment, ergo no need to use ones brain to the fullest. of course it also happens at times, that media are overlapping each other, but those are considered rare cases.
basically though one can like both kinds of media, its non obvious that this has to go for everyone, as there´re certainly lots of people who avoid one of them, whilst enjoying the other. only because normally both are using the same kind of visuals, that doesnt mean they are of the same kind - ergo easy comparable.
In other words, you can consider vn´s more or less to be an interactive book, whereas anime are an animated movie/series, its like comparing cars with trains.

& for the sake of answering the question, personally i put visual novels/books before anime, considering the latter beeing currently more mainstream, which increases its generic level. of course there´re some series/movies i enjoyed, but they arent as much as i had hoped them to be. (& i also know that in many cases there is no other way for the studio, because animeproductions are expensive & not many want to go down the path of creating something truly unique, having a higher risk of earning lesser money, because potential viewers wont understand a fuck etc., heck even ore monogatari flopped real damn hard caused by its NON mainstream protagonist, so that a sequel is highly unlikely, despite it beeing a good series).
another reason why i like vn´s more, is that the story is more detailed in most cases, which i definitely prefer, so that ones imagination is really able to run wild like fuck, also due to them beeing mostly written from one´s own perspective, in comparison to anime where you rather feel like an observer.

Would be fun to see more decent h-scenes with characters passing out with joy.

Another annoying issue with eroge, is the sole fact, that one of the characters is almost always either treated as a reward, or a victim, not as a real partner in sex. This plagues basically the whole visual novel storywriting and isn't limited to eroge. I've only seen a couple of visual novels where partners stand on equal terms, no matter their characteristics (specific story elements aside; it's obviously not meant to happen, when sex is a result of rape). This is also one of the reasons h-scenes in most eroge tend to be ridiculously unrealistic, dull and/or hilarious; because writers do not consider their characters and sex scenes turn more into a drag, rather than an integral part of the storyline with a meaning and character development.

Can one really make a fellatio scene non generic?

I also still want to figure out how male protagonists can deny the refractory period during intercourse.
If I consider they're non human we can also assume it's a parasitic form lodged in their genitals that cancels the negative feedback going from their genitals to their brains, allowing continuous orgasms as well as an insane amount of fluids to be secreted from a portal to another dimension where there's an unlimited amount of it.

What if the protagonist actually responded to the "You can't, stop!" during sex and then the girl was like "Oh...I didn't expect you to actually stop..." and then he lost interest and their relationship spiraled downward at an alarming rate.

They also have multiple orgasms in a short span of time which is physically impossible due to the human body's phisiology.

The creatures in eroge which we often refer to as male protagonists have a portal to a different dimension in their genitals that allows for unlimited storage of fluids. They also deny negative feedback in their brains which allows for multiple orgasms. They are not human.

I feel like OP meant "engrossed" or "invested in", I also don't self insert myself consciously in anything I read, but I do find myself attached to certain stories and/or characters.

For example, Key visual novels are mostly based on self insertion, and if you finish the novel caring for any of the heroines, that means the game did its "self insertion" job well enough that you didn't really notice you were doing it subconsciously.

"Self insertion" or "Immersion" is not exclusively "Imagining yourself in the stead of the characters" or "Imagining you're part of the world", just being engrossed or finding yourself taking an interest in how the story and characters develop is in itself a form of "immersion", at least for me.

And to make sure I'm not just spewding BS, I made sure to look up "immersion" in the dictionary:
Immersion (ɪˈməːʃ(ə)n/) (noun) Deep mental involvement in something.

So really, just by finding yourself invested in reading a story, you're theoretically immersed.

I think what OP was asking was "Which medium do you really find yourself spending the most time on and take most enjoyment out of".

Their personal meaning to me I already explained in this thread

As for the medium itself, it's a medium.
As it stands it's certainly a window into Japanese culture and subculture.
To be it's an incredibly good medium, but it's also incredibly underutilized.

There's two parts to a VN so let's start with the story part.
Many people mentioned screen/anime, novel, and manga/comics. I am going to be different and say there is one other thing VN is more functionally closer to than any of those three: Theater.
That I have amateur theater background has nothing to do with this

    Let's break it down:
VN has tachi-e, background, and CG. It needs a lot less descriptive writing than novel, but can convey close to the same amount of details.
It can not convey as much detail as screen or comics, but in turn invites the audience to fill in with their imagination (before someone butcher me, manga just means comics in Japanese. Yes I know they mean only Japanese comics in English)
It has music to help build mood, something it shares with screen.
And there is acting. In this case voice acting, again to help with mood.

What also shares all those characteristics? Theater.
They are both middle points between showing you the entire scene and leaving it entirely to your imagination.

Now VN don't have actual acting-acting, and probably can not be used for a musical.
But it can convey thoughts and description better than a soliloquy or the chorus can.

If I were to put rank the five: Screen, Comics, Theater, Novel, and VN in different categories, from 5 to 1, 5 being most 1 being least, I would put it:

Screen          Comics           Theater            Novel           Visual Novel
    Time Needed                      1                  3                     2                    5                     4
    Mood-Immersion                  2                  1                     4                    3                     5
    Descriptive Details                5                  4                     2                    1                     3
    Plot/Character Details           1                  2                     3                    5                     4
    Open to Imagination            1                  2                     3                    5                     4

Now these are not set in stone, but just in general.
So as a storytelling medium, I feel VN is like an even more personal version of Theater. It's also a nice balance compared to other forms.

Each form has something very specific to it. VN is it's ability give the audience the visual and audio input from a character's point of view for long periods (or even most). Theater by design must be third person, while comics and screen can not only limit their first person view to short segments for emphasis. Novels can be written for first person, but has no sound or sight.
I feel this allows VN to be the most personal of all the forms.
Third person could definitely be done on the VN format (interestingly all the third person VN I've read are SLG or RPG) but I prefer first person. VN can provide enough details for narration to be minimum, or even non existent, so might as well not squander the chance to make the story personal, with access to thoughts and stuff.

Having said all that, I feel VN is being limited by its fanbase and dating-sims history. I hope some day there could be something like, I don't know, a WWII VN or Fantasy VN with little or no romance. VN I feel is the only one of the four mediums that is limited to centering on comedy/romance/drama and taking little experimentation in other genres, instead of a more frequent, wider reach.

With that I go to the game part.
Of those 5 mediums, VN is the one unique in that it makes the audience participate, and in ways far engaging than Theater or Choose-your-own-adventure novels can without needing to sacrifice story-telling in theory (in practice it will likely happen). Yet I haven't seen any go down this route. At best I've seen games and story in the same software but more-or-less independent of each other. (Though Key has a interesting thing of writing replayability and routes into the story itself).

I hope someday I can find a VN where the story path is decided by gameplay, like what objective you pick in an SLG, how you do in an RPG, etc.
Long Live the Queen does this. And it's quite refreshing and entertaining. Just that both story and gameplay are very barebone.

This "emptiness" that you're feeling right now is what many people refer to as the 'void'. You experienced something that is so amazing and had such a big impact on you that after it ended, you feel like part of you went 'missing'. You feel as though you will never going to experience the same thing ever again. You don't know what to do with your life, and the fact that everyone around you are oblivious to what you've just experienced adds to that.

But don't worry, it will go away in time. What should you do? Simple. Go and experience more things. Remember that KonoSora is just your first visual novel, and as your gateway VN, it's going to leave quite an impact. There are tons of other amazing VNs out there that are as good, or even better, than KonoSora

heavenlysf reacted to Rabbit in Has your enjoyment from gaming remained the same throughout the years?
Gaming will never be the same from when I was younger, it might just feel like that because of nostalgia but I can't just get into games as easy as I used too when I was younger. there's been a few games that I have played alot when I was younger, I have 1 thousand hours on mw2 and god knows how much I have on WoW from when I was younger, now I play something for 30 hours at the best before I start getting bored if I even get that far. I could also play alot more by myself before, nowadays playing w/o friends isn't really enjoyable anymore.

Games has always been important to me, a big part of my childhood as it helped me through some very rough times, it distracted me. And I don't need that distraction as much anymore so that might be one reason for why games just doesn't do it for me anymore.
