Steve got a reaction from Sieg in VNJS - A VNDS Interpreter in HTML5/Javascript
This system is indeed impressive, however I must "defend" the traditional model. Maybe not physical disc model but straight file DL.

I am probably one of very few anti-cloud people and I hope the idea will not completely rule the internet market.

I am against could music, could gaming, cloud movies, I think it is step back instead of forward, especially with today's imperfections. Giving control over the content to the companies instead of the users
Yes, as an idea it sounds really cool, you can access your stuff from everywhere, everytime. But it counts on people having 100% stable internet connection, it counts on people having fast internet connection, it counts on internet working as it is supposed to for that system, it counts on companies providing 100% working service. Where in reality it is much different. As a big Steam user, I have found myself unable to play my bought SINGLEPLAYER game, because "this game is currently unavailable, please try again" - I had the files on my computer and working internet connection, how was the game unavailable? And it is not could gaming, steam is just could DRM or how you want to call it. Yet there is lot of problems with Steam and it is THE most successful game distribution platform currently available. Yet with all their money, there are still problems with the service.
If you remember the Assassins Creed 2 incident, I had a pirated copy of the game and I could play, where as people who bought the game couldn't, because UBI servers were not working.

That is current situation, now imagine you have everything on cloud, my friend uses one of the cloud music services and almost writes poems about how awesome it is, yet when I talk to him, I find lot of things he cannot do there that I can do with torrented mp3 files or itunes files.
Firstly I can access my music even when my internet is down, doesn't happen often but it can happen. I can access my music when the cloud is down. I can move my files to devices not connected to internet, keyring mp3 players etc (TV for movies).
And what is even more important for me - I can have my own customization. On cloud services you depend on what the company offers you as a customization, take a look at youtube as it is known to anyone (not a cloud service but streaming one), you cannot customize anything there. You need scripts and addons and not even that will get you what you exactly want.
The customization is one of the most important aspects for me, I want to be able to edit the song, if it has too long intro I want to be able to delete it, if it is too loud or too quiet in comparison to the other songs in playlist, I want to be able to edit the volume. None of these things you can do with cloud music.

Now if I imagine cloud gaming (onlive someone?), you cannot play counter-strike there, in CS I play on servers under 20ms because every delay is felt, however with streaming it, the delay would be much higher. Of course you don't care about delay in visual novels, but what about another example - modability, do you not remember times of games being 100% modable, changing everything in the game as YOU like it. This feature in games lately very decreased and people don't like it, people still want to be able to inject FXAA/SMAA if they have enough powerful PC. Not only that, just look at how Diablo 3 ended up - DRM no mod game. No wonder people then go for Torchlight 2, which for an indie game sold sooo much copies before even releasing on consoles. With mods you can even add additional ultra extra difficulties (yes referring to touhou) which some steam games could use (AC ehm ehm).
Now how is this related to VNs? I mod VNs, I add english "mods" which are different files. Not only TL patches though, didn't you add side voices from playstation (or what was it) version of Little Busters to the PC one once they released the experimental patch? None of these things you can do on pure cloud.

What is next, clouded system? Clouded internet browser. I wouldn't want to waste hours spent customizing my firefox exactly to my likings.

If you ever played multiple MMOs, you might often find yourself saying "why isn't this interface feature here, why can't I sell all items I selected, why can't I chat with multiple people, why can't I set auto reply to chat messages when I am fighting with boss" - yes I played wow for a long time and I got used to lot of convenient addons, then you go to game like SWTOR and you have to PAY TO GET ADDITIONAL HOTKEY SLOTS FOR SPELLS!
giving power to one company is not good, even though the company is the developer, he has no right to tell you how exactly you consume its product, yes there has to be community rules against cheaters in MP games but why are there limits in SP games too. In some steam games you already cannot even use someone else's savegames.
Bakery has no right to tell you if you can fry their bread, if you can put butter on it, even if you want to put shit on it, they cannot do anything with it, because you just happen to like bread with shit, if you are not bothering other people, nobody should care. Just like in games unless you are cheating in multiplayer game, nobody should tell you what monitor you can use, if it is big one or small one, what mouse, if it is more acurate mouse or not, what FXAA options you want to use, what lens flares you want to use (someone modded battlefield 3 to look better and they threaten with bans to people who use it, because they want to have better experience, it is no wallhack, it just makes the grass more green, the game loses its blue tint I hated so much, it is more colorful more prettier game, yet they don't want you to use it).

I do not want to end up being told by other companies what I can and cannot do to enhance my enjoyment even more, if JAST/MG censors a game, Id rather pick a TL group that didn't, are you sure you will be able to do it on a COMMERCIAL cloud service?

I chose internet as my life, because there are no limits, I can do what I want to do whenever I want to do it. Not being told what I can and can't do, neither by Russia or America or anyone. You might have no idea but imagine that here before revolution, you could choose awesome entertainment, on TV: Russian movie or ... surprise Russian movie, and in movie theaters, there was also awesome picl, one week Russian movie, next week... wait for it... Russian movie. And TV has very close to the current cloud situation, you could watch what was being broadcasted as it was broadcasted, nothing else, controlled by government.
Well i'm not gonna go political again here, I already mentioned in few of my essay posts here xD

so I will just sum it up

TLDR: Cloud means taking power from the user and giving it to a single entity, whether it is company or government, in either case it is BAD. This being a fan based project is awesome, but having commercial cloud based service is not the right way to go, reasons can be found in the text above.

I get everything from torrent. nyaa torrent has most of it and the rest can be found from the website of the subtitle group (you can check sites like anidb to see what subtitle releases of what anime there is).

And when it comes to actual watching, I tried monitor in chair, I tried TV from sofa, but in the end what suits me the most is my small monitor "in my face" which I have in my bed (also called H-bed).
For player I use pot player which is a korean player with big support for anime so you can customize lot of stuff to fit your needs.

dear torbin, I am glad you called hentai help line, we might be able to help you

Anyways, the thing is all-ages VNs have different structure over the ones that have H. It is not only about the one scene at the end or middle or whenever.

I haven't played that many to make it a rule but from what I've played, All-ages VNs tend to lack all sorts of sexual references, sexual talk, dark mature themes such as drugs, alcohol, rape and other forms which can be used as a great tool for character development.

And often (not always) they lack the one part that some of us westerners like in the VNs or how we call them Dating Sims - that being the actual dating. What is a dating sim without the dating - a story. And it can be hell of a good story, yet for me and maybe it is the same with you, it is not nearly enough.
Now it is not always true but then again you can see why not, I would take example of Little Busters - originally all-ages but due to demand, EX version was made with H-scenes (I will leave the quality of those scenes aside, some like it, some don't, its not important). The important part is that LB was structured as a game that would be great with H-scenes and that's why it wasn't that hard to add them. And as I already mentioned somewhere else, I actually played the H scenes from JP EX installation after finishing the girl's route. And I think the H fit there very well, especially with my favorite Kud route - there was a lot of romancing and blushing, the stuff I like about VNs, there was the dating which represented the dating sim name.

And then on the other hand you can take stuff like Ever 17, where I only played a single route and can't just like you bring myself to finishing it - I played the Sara route (obviously I choose the youngest looking girl there is xD), it was good, but no kiss, no romance, no blushing, no dating - ofc it was good but I would have to ask myself, wouldn't it be better as anime or a KN with maybe different chapters? For me it would. If I look at the mentioned Planetarian, it is a great story with great character, but it is short, it is like 4 hours kinetic experience with no choices. It doesn't need dating. If you have short story focused anime (like Madoka or something), it doesn't need dating, it is about story.

And thats also where the VN community splits, some are looking for a great story to read, they prefer reading with pictures maybe, instead of watching moving anime in that case - and those are the people who like only all-ages releases. But they would probably like chapter based kinetic novels as well if they were made that way. The choices are more like "what chapter do you want to read first". But then again they just might want to have some more control over the story and have it interactive - and whats why there is some market for all-ages VNs even in Japan.

Where as what I consider a good VN is a good dating sim, a simulation where the choices I make let me get closer to the girl I love, and the ultimate goal is that you get so close, you are practically inside her
And that's where the importance of H comes in - you could do without it if there was tons if kissing and blushing and a bed scene without H and the sex only mentioned - just like it can be in any other form of media we know, where it is romance based but it is not actually a porn - yet the thought of having sex is there. In Japanese VNs, they had the great idea - why not just make it all the way, including the sex scene as a part of the game - and it worked, it is unique. But it also needs to be marked 18+.

So again, for me and lot of others, it is dating sim genre, and just like in any other sim you use the simulation part to reach the state that you would reach in real life - in train sim you reach your destination after controlling the train so I expect in dating sim you reach one of the goals of dating - being the sex from love with the girl. In all-ages VN you could have the sex mentioned or implied, like in games like mass effect - but then since the genre is already developed like that, they can as well just make it 18+ and add the H scene there and make more money - that's why most all-ages VNs don't have much dating or dating related stuff like long kissing scenes and if they do, people will often tell you the H is missing from those.

So yeah, you are not alone, I am struggling with Rewrite now too, it is great story with great characters, but it is more like a fairy tale, people like each other and they save each other from problems and help each other and enjoy being together but they don't do the stuff that couples do, kissing, sex and all that - well at least in the 2 routes I played do far.

So yeah, I hope it helps and you can see that most all-ages VNs are targeted at different kind if audience who just want (great) interactive story.
For people that want as its in English called dating sim or in Japanese called eroge - erotic game, for those there is plenty of those with H because it is mostly necessary part of the genre, brings more storytelling means and character development tools which are not possible without it.

Well the "sharpness" might simply be because it is in 1280x720 over the classic 800x600 which most translated VNs have.

But I wouldn't call it "graphical quality" but rather artstyle. It is KEY so there is high quality for CGs and characters but there are people who prefer different style.

You can look at games that are 10 years old and still see beautiful characters, but just because it is rendered in lower resolution (this one is even 640x480) doesn't make it less good

the static art used in VNs is eternal and it only depends on the artist.
there can be VN with 1080p resolution but bad artist and the fact they have "better graphics" doesn't actually make it nicer.

Rewrite is just combination of relatively good resolution, awesome artstyle and UI design (the moving parts and all that looks very nice).

But then you can look at some of the games that have animated CGs, are in realtime 3d or have the new live2d technology - and it is graphically more advanced than rewrite which just uses static sprites on BG and nice CGs.

So what I say is that there is no "graphics" in visual novels, not in the sense you use it for other games, there you look at the texture resolution, polygon count on models, antialiasing and all those technologies that allow you to render the 3d game in realtime. In normal VNs there is no realtime rendering so there is no need have technologies that save graphical power - therefore no graphics - its just an image and it depends on how the image is drawn.
Also lot of gamers mistake graphics for aesthetics. There can be game that has inferior graphics but has good world design and aesthetics and looks better than for example BF3 which has so powerful graphical engine, but is ruined by all the wrong decisions from developer side, blue tint over the screen, lens flares etc ruining the whole picture.
But that is just my opinion on it, some people might like these effects, for me it ruined the game.
And the same way it is with VNs, there can be so good artstyle that I love but other people don't. Because both artstyle in VNs (which is often times linked to the author) and aesthetics in videogames are very subjective thing.
I can say I love character design that looks like this where as other people prefer very different one and even hate to see this style in VNs.

So to at least little answer the topic, FOR ME Rewrite is the best looking game that has English patch but as mentioned above, it is very subjective. There are people who like style like http://vndb.org/v7576 but I don't enjoy it at all.

Also one more example of the point, try to have this rendered in 3d as in RPG, it would be almost impossible with all the details you can see there. But when it is just image, the author can add any detail he wants and it doesn't affect performance at all.
    This is actually a CG from a VN ( http://vndb.org/v8036 )

    HATSUKOI (初恋)

    Description:

    Endings with this guide:

Note from Steve: the choices for routes are as they are in the alpha English patch release. Few choices are in Japanese so I will make them in Japanese for this guide as well.
Other than that, 99.9% of the lines in Common and Anzu route were translated (that's what I played so far).
Also worth noting that I as someone who barely uses walkthroughs needed to use it here as the choices are very tricky, I recommend using it form the beginning so you don't end up in a route that is not translated.

    Routes:

    Anzu

    Resources:
    JAPANESE WALKTHROUGH
    ORIGINAL IMAGE BEFORE PHOTOSHOPPED
    OFFICIAL WEBSITE OF THE GAME
    VNDB PAGE

Final words: I will add the second route as soon as I finish it as I need to know the choices in the alpha patch. If you wish to play the loli first, use the Japanese guide in the meanwhile, her choices are under her Japanese name 椎名 柚純
Also worth noting that the most time on this WT I spent was photoshopping the image xD So please appreciate it

Ok, it is done, download is here:

    https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BylWuAJokVXMUDd5dVpZMVVvZzQ/edit
Patched to English with the partial one.

also I tried translating what I can in settings

    Run _hatsukoi-hwt.exe for Half-width text
    or _hatsukoi-pt.exe for Proportional-width text

and this is the difference between the exe

HWT is left, PT is right

Steve got a reaction from Tief Blau in Just had a big argument with Kouryuu from Mangagamer on copyright
Well I read through it (but twitter so complicated to read conversation!! xD)

And even though I don't understand all that is going on as I don't follow the TL scene as much, I know this:

Everything can be done for free and I as someone who uses lot of free things try to also offer what little I do for free (now this has nothing to do with VNs or anime in my case). So I would agree there with Aaeru.

However even though everything can be done for free, in this world there are still things that are not free and to get those you also need to get paid for stuff you could potentially do for free. You need money to buy food because it is not free, you need money to even pay for clean air as not even that is free anymore here. And in that I have to agree with Kouryuu, he just wants to live off doing translation and even though he could do it for free, nobody is going to give him food for free, give him place to live for free.

However I do not agree with him going against the free competition. He can do TL for money, but he has no right to tell people to stop doing it for free. If I volunteer to go helping old people for free, I don't expect people that work in the care system to get mad because they get paid for it.

In order to survive in this world, you need to find a nice balance, do as many things for free because you can also use other people's work for free. But you still need something to buy the things that are not free.

As I already mentioned I work on the internet in book selling system - and people pay us for books they can torrent or download for free on various sites - because it is a digital copy of the book, it doesn't cost anything to give it to them. However I have this as my job and get paid for it - that way I can afford to live. They pay for the convenience to have the books on one place, just like on steam. And even though they can get it free and I could be giving it for free to people, I cannot expect anyone to give me free food and water and roof to live under. Because nobody will.

So you are both right and wrong. You are similar, but each of you charges people for something else. He charges people for his translation works and then maybe does lot of things for free. You Aaeru charge nothing for your TL work, but surely you still do something to earn money, you could do it for free but you can't because that way you couldn't afford to live. I don't know what your source of income is but whether it is manual work or some data entry work or work in McDonald's or you have a business, you need to get paid for it. That way you have way to live and you can do free stuff for the rest of the day

So you just need to understand each other, he needs to understand that you can do free stuff he does for money (and he has no right to stop you). And you need to understand that just like you do your paid job, he needs one too to live. He does free stuff in different place.
Its not like he is a millionaire, I don't like those because those just have money sitting or account and still do charge for their work (and sometimes its not even their work). If I could get everything for free, I wouldn't charge anything for what I do. But some people have more then they can use (and they even use much more then they need). After I pay my life expenses I have like 100$ a month left, I do with that because there is lot of free stuff on the internet, sadly I can't afford a plane to places I want to visit like Japan. But I rather do some stuff for free and not visit Japan, than if I would get paid for everything and have all money for myself - sadly many people go only for money and their own happiness and that needs to be fixed.
For example politicians in this country take too much money and their work is not even worth it. If they just took what normal person needs, we wouldn't have to pay for state services. Few years ago we still didn't have to pay for medical care, doctor visits etc. Now we do have to pay. And I think in this case it is even worse in America (with health care). And because America has so big influence over the economy, I don't think this copyright bullshit can change, because it all originated there. Hard to say if communism with socialistic economy really worked as it was intended to work (as the original author explained in the book), it could really be a good political system with good economy, however it is only a theory and nowhere in the world it ended up working. Because there are always greedy people and thus in theory good communism/socialism turned into totalitarianism and other shit. (and even so many older people here always remember how everything was free... yeah too bad it wasn't the only thing, too bad it brought very big disadvantages with it as well, because of bad evil people)

Now don't take me like some socialist communism fan, just saying that if it work as wrote on paper, it could be good, just like would be democracy and capitalism on paper - they sound good but in reality they are shit, I don't prefer any of the systems, neither of them works on this planet.

However it is not really problem of the systems but a problem of the people and there will always be bad people.

Anyway neither Aaeru or Kouryuu are one of those, you just do things differently, get paid for something else. So you should not argue and just accept each other and live happily as you can in this corrupted and rotten society.

Well VNs for me are never ending stories
Even after I finish, I still live with the characters in my mind
And I finally look up all the MADs, mashups etc on youtube and niconico xD
And since I have full soundtrack unlocked I download OST so I can listen to it outside of the game.

Well, what more to say, if the ending is good, it just inscribes into my heart and stays there forever.
I never skip ED song and I just enjoy it the last second, sometimes if the VN doesn't automatically transition into menu, I just stay there looking at the company logo or whatever the last screen is, thinking about how good it was
Often tiemes it transitions into menu and the menu is changed so I look at the new menu xD

Then I often replay good moments from memo saves I make throughout the game.

Don't know what more to say without mentioning specific VNs, but that would be for the specific VN topic including spoilers, not this one.
