    Yep that's the question. There was this argument in one of the VN communities yesterday and this particular person by the name of, DM (initials, don't want to disclose names)
    It was a Steins gate 0 English release thread, and this was pretty how it triggered the title question.  PS: Aga is my lad.
    So what do you guys think about his statement? IMO, learning anything for anything is never retarded, we should all learn new stuff and move forward.
    I will use myself as an example, I learned JP to read VNs initially, and now I can read any VN without problem I decided to expand my knowledge and are planning to attend UNI in Japan next academic year and see what I can start over there. Maid cafe.....

    Telling people why they shouldn't learn something they clearly care about is even more retarded imo. 
    I don't go around telling stamp collectors that spending money on stamps is stupid. Because it's what they enjoy doing. Similarly, learning a language can serve multiple purposes, and neither of those purposes is wrong (well, I guess if you're learning a language to join a terrorist organization, that might not be so great).

    Has anyone read Mr. Moody's borderline terrible essay? I really don't advise it, you never know how much of somebody's stupidity rubs off on random passers-by. Let me quickly explain why this 'philosopher's' essay on transgendered pronoun is the stupidest thing I've read this week.
    First some history. A very long time ago, English used to be a gendered language (probably due to English's tendency to steal from other languages) with nouns expressing a gender like in France. Le horror. A simplified explanation can be found here:

    However this wouldn't last. In the 1300s gender was eliminated from English nouns, and there was a concerted push to do the same for pronouns. This is why you had people like Shakespeare using the word 'they' in the singular - this was the word that was designated to for a non-gendered third person pronoun. Examples can be found here:

    Unfortunately later on, many centuries later actually, grammarists struck this down telling people it was wrong. 'They' is plural, they said, and therefore using it to indicate a singular pronoun is obviously terrible English. So after this people tried using 'he' as a universal pronoun that included both the sexes, but this is obviously quite controversial these days.
    Now knowing this, how can anybody read Daniel Moody's essay with a straight face when he opens with: 
    You have permission to laugh, I certainly did.
    What he does is take a system everybody agrees is obsolete, and have been happily finding ways around for 800 years or more and atrributes a reason for its existence that is not only non-sensical but is incorrect. A third person pronoun denotes a person, it does not NEED to denote more than that, just like ‘it’ just denotes and object and ‘they’ denotes a group of people. Details are lacking because they aren’t needed, and can be added later if they are. That gender/sex was used was a hangover from an obsolete system of English which attributed gender, or sex, to many nouns.
    So he’s wrong. But not only is he wrong, he ludicrously writes an essay extrapolating from his wrong assumption. He then concludes with this statement –
    People have been trying to get rid of the system for almost a millennia because 'it works', apparently. Referring to people via sex is a pain in the arse. Why? Well the first obvious reason is that the sex of an individual is not always known. A less obvious one is when you’re looking right at somebody, and still can’t figure out a person’s sex. But watch out you don’t slip. Ever call a woman a guy mistakenly? It’s not fun.
    So as an ‘anchor’ for communication, it’s a pretty lousy one. 
    It's also unclear what he means by 'transgender pronouns'. 
    He actually doesn’t say anything about this at all. However, the term has been thrown at gender neutral pronouns which is quite hilarious. Gender neutral pronouns are a way to refer to a person without referring to anything else about them. Recalling from before that a third person pronoun by definition refers to a person in the third person, not a GENDERED or SEXED person in the third person. 
    But this is quite beside the point. Daniel Moody begins with a misunderstanding, and extrapolates that until everything he says is an embarrassment, and is an example of extremely shoddy and wishy-washing thinking. This is why you do your research BEFOREHAND.
    Daniel Moody describes himself as a philosopher and has released a book about … who cares. If this is the type of thinking coming out of the mouths of modern day philosophers, then maybe the field is in as dire shape as people say.

    Hello! First of all, this is my second post (but is like the first one) so I want to say: hey everyone. This web is like a VN paradise, I love it haha
    I've been working on a Cyberpunk VN for a month, mostly on the script but I have some art already and I wanted to show it to you. Hope you like it. 
    I have a lot more but of couse I can't post it. So, thats the art but I want to talk a bit about the story and all of that, just because this is my first VN and I'm excited about it. As is said on the title the game will have a Cyberpunk/Sci-fi thematic with some soft philosophy on it and a lot of robots. All the protagonists are girls (with a bit of Yuri even if this is not an eroge~) Right now I'm thinking about using TyranoBuilder as engine, because I don't know anything about scripting, I'm not sure if is the best option though. I'm a bit worried about the music and the translation because: even if I have experience drawing and writing, this is my first time composing music so I will upload a couple of tracks in the future and you can tell me if they are any good. And since I'm spanish, I need to translate the script but my english is nowhere near perfect, so I may need help to correct the mistakes I will make translating the script. Thats all for now, I'll gladly answer any questions ;D

    In Starry Dreams, the player is a new resident of Sunflower Apartments, where they meet several interesting characters- two of which who want to open their own bakery! As the story progresses, the success of the bakery hinges on whether or not the player is good enough friends with the characters.



    The player plays as the nameable protagonist who has just moved into the apartments of most of the characters in Starry Dreams. There are a total of 6 characters in Starry Dreams, not including the player character. You build relationships with the characters, which decides how the story progresses. The better a friend you are to some of them- how much you support them- dictates if their dreams and goals are accomplished.

    The aim of the project is to make a light-hearted LGBT story that's cute but doesn't focus on the characters being LGBT- instead, it's about their lives and their goals. Two characters, Marion and Frederika, are a non-binary couple who want to build a bakery together. Two other characters, Licellia and Bricie, are a lesbian couple that have their own aspirations, developed later in the story. Starry Dreams focuses on becoming friends with the characters and either supporting their dreams or being apathetic to them.

    We've developed a pre-alpha demo for a brief look at the project. It features two backgrounds, one pose per main sprite, and a brief selection of music and story. While there are some placeholders and limited features, we hope it provides a glimpse of our vision! The main goal of the demo is to convey the overall atmosphere of the game in how we handle visuals and music.
    The demo is 2500 words long (around 7 minutes of material).
    We'd like to shoutout Youngha Hwang for programming the demo via the Ren'Py engine, and putting truckloads of work into custom functionalities!
     

     

     
     
    S T O R Y
    Here's the rundown: you play as Alison Hart, a fresh-out-of-college journalism graduate who is desperate for a job. In fact, you're so desperate that you're willing to apply for an infamous (yet successful) online tabloid that specializes in "supernatural events"—though, really, it's just a collection of tinfoil hat conspiracies.
    So, when you're assigned to investigate six people who are rumored carry the Spirits of the Zodiacs—whatever that means—you're not worried. After all, the whole idea is just sheer nonsense. Right?
    A light and fluffy adventure ensues in which you:
    Are almost crushed by a chandelier. Find yourself in a burning house. Witness an execution. And somewhere along the lines, you start to think that journalism is a lot more complicated than you expected.

    Zodiac•Axis is a commercial visual novel game that will be developed in Ren'Py and released for Mac, PC, and Linux. It is a fusion of suspense, romance, and supernatural fiction with a splash of psychological horror. With a thoroughly developed worldlore, it mixes a contemporary environment with whimsical Asian fantasy. 
    Romance five guys! (Not simultaneously.) Pick from an array of choices. Feign insanity, write a cheesy love song, and assimilate with cardboard boxes. Choices shape Alison’s skillset and allow her to stay alive. Er, that is to say, write good articles. Experience a narrative begins with humor and intrigue, then evolves into heartwarming depth.

    Cave of Sinners: A Virtual Reality Visual Novel Introduction.
    Q: Why VR for a VN?
    A: I know that VR might be like a "?" for most people, but when you're like me that enjoys free roam and puzzle based gameplay, it becomes a little more interesting.
    Q: What platform is the VN coming to?
    A: Right now the VR version being developed is for Android, the PC version will be made later when this one is finished.
    Q: Is the VR obligatory?
    A: No, VR is not forced on you. If you don't have a Google Cardboard or any other VR headset for Android you can turn the feature off. Same goes for the PC version with the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.
    Q: What will make the VN benefit from VR?
    A: Head tracking, fast movement and immersion. It will be essential in the gameplay segments and to more easily spot "things".
    Q: How big will the game be?
    A: The script says about 45 hours, which is for the first path taken out of a lot.
    Q: Will there be voice acting?
    A: Yes, fully.
    Q: Will it have any electronic music?
    A: So far I've made one electronic song for it, all else is orchestral.

The others tell you that you must be mistaken, that you are confused, that the isolation has started to get to you. They may be right. You think you might be losing your mind.
    But I know more about you than you realize...and I know you'll come looking for me.

    Greetings everyone, we are Eastwatch studio. Project Breach is our first title, and is truly a passion project.
    Our goal is to create something with high production value, and deliver an unforgettable story.
    As of now we are still early stage, though much of the foundation is in place. The overall story is complete, with the first few chapters completely written. While influences are many, the Zero Escape series is a prime inspiration in terms of storytelling and utilizing the medium. In terms of the art style for Project Breach, inspiration was drawn from cg films from the mid 2000s(such as appleseed ex machina), a style you don't see much of anymore, but we love. Much effort is being put into the development of the environments, making them feel alive and atmospheric. The intent is to build things in a way that when there is a cut to cinematic, it blends seamlessly and doesn't feel disjointed.
     

     
    In Project Breach, you can expect a lengthy, winding thriller mystery, with rich characters and choices that directly effect the story.

    In this barren world of endless deserts, almost all live their lives upon large fractions of land floating above the surface.
    Here there are two types of people: Normals and Abnormals.

    Buffalo Seer is an eccentric Abnormal who wants nothing more than to use the magic ability within them; future seeing. However, even within their society where everyone has a special power, future seeing is considered dangerous and advised against.
    Unable to be swayed, Seer finally gains permission to look into their own future, only to receive an unbelievable revelation. Not only have they left Abnormal society, they're married to someone they've never met before.
    With visions of happiness in their mind, Seer leaves everything behind and ventures to the part of the land fraction where those without magic live; Normal society.
    Seer is going to convince this stranger that they are meant to be together no matter what it takes, even if it means tagging along on an adventure.
    In only a few days Seer will learn just how far away that pleasant future is.

    Buffalo Seer is a driven, goal oriented individual. For most of their life their goal was to use their ability at least once. After that was achieved there was no plan, Seer simply expected to be satisfied with life. However, upon seeing what the future holds Seer immediately created a new goal, finding their future spouse. But then after finding them Seer decided they’d have to get married before they could be fully content. Once that inevitably occurs, who knows?  
    Seer has an odd habit of phrasing things in unnecessarily suspicious ways, that coupled with the way they dress causes them to come across as creepy within Normal society. Seer doesn’t seem to mind.  


    Kea is a police officer who recently transferred to the capital of Vespen in order to work undercover. The job requires an officer to infiltrate a street gang that mainly recruits young teens off the street, hence the outfit they’ve got on. Kea was requested specifically due to their youthful stature and fitting personality, since in informal situations Kea is chatty, fast-talking, and can easily come across as rude or uncultured. While on the job Kea speaks and behaves (somewhat) more seriously.
    Despite technically being in charge, they are the black sheep of the group. While everyone else is perfectly comfortable bending or even out right breaking the law Kea is, naturally, not so keen on that. But, no matter how often Kea intentionally or accidentally isolates themselves from the others and how much they cause disagreements, they don’t actually want it to be that way. They’d like to get along with the team and have a positive impact on situations, it just seems impossible because of their position.


    Mapmaker and item collector extraordinaire Piper wouldn’t normally have a reason to be in the capital, however this is an unusual time for her. She is currently on hiatus. She chose to take a break because constant work had worn her down. Before she felt duty call and joined the adventure she had been spending her days wearing nice clothing and drinking tea while discussing good books with pleasant ladies. However, Piper has no intention of wasting time sulking over the loss of the last part of her time off from ruin trekking. In fact, she doesn’t seem to ever spend time being in a poor mood. 
    Piper treats others in a friendly and casual manner but is nothing near an open book. She’s deeply enigmatic. Her courteous nature stems entirely from social obligations rather than genuine interest and that fact becomes rather obvious if you try speaking with her for any extended period of time. 


    January is a man of massive importance and wealth in the region of Vespen, though only due to inheriting it. He has been the Duke of a significant family ever since his mother passed away a few years prior. That title is no longer bestowed and every other house in Vespen that had the title at one point has had the lineage die out. With an heirless only child as a Duke, January’s family is currently one step away from joining those other houses in being stripped of their clout. The weight of being the last true noble in the region has not been lost on January. 
    The entire point of the trip is escorting January to a safe house, so in that sense he is an important member of the team. But only in that sense. January isn’t allowed to do anything, much to his frustration. Because of his sheltered upbringing January has spent his entire life having people assume he’s useless or an easy target. It is unclear if the group thinks the same way or if they are simply overprotective. Upon first meeting January he comes across as rather skittish. After Seer shows him his future he resolves to change the way he lives his life. From then on he begins to act more indignant and reckless. He is going to be a contributing member of the team, whether the rest of the group wants him to or not.


    *Not Pursueable*
    Trinette is the leader of a bounty hunting gang. The group is famous for its efficiency and willingness to work outside what is legal. However, lawlessness is the last thing you’ll find within the group itself. It is highly organized and functions essentially the way a normal business does. Every employee has a set wage, time off, health coverage, etc. 
    The reason this criminal gang functions this way is because Trinette’s background is mainly in finances. After working for many reputable companies she decided to start a company of her own. She chose a bounty hunting gang simply because it was a position that needed to be filled in the area.   If you can look past all her wrongdoing and not take what she does in her job personally, Trinette is a rather amiable woman.

    Salut! Thanks if you think our concept is cool.
    It's always nice to meet a colleague. Both Inform7 and Twine are fine tools.
    We use our own toolset that is a combination of natural language processing utilities + core of one modern chatbot/artificial assistant as a base for NPCs. Game produced with this toolset will look like classic text adventure (ie you enter some text, game outputs some text and so on) but with some additional features that you cannot achieve with Inform7 or Inform6 or with Twine - some features I described in announcement, some will be revealed in our development blog and here later.

    The plot
    People…
    In a rotten world where people forgot the definition of "humanity", two coalitions fight for power. One of them is the Order who keeps under its heel a puppet government and another one is the Alliance – a gang of yesterday’s bandits who decided to take power. What way to choose ? Who has truth behind him? Should one reject the old rules and rely on the ideas of the future ? The truth is to be looked for in the tricky tangles of people’s destinies, hopes and vicious desires.
    And what about gods ?...
    The Order uses the faith in them for its black deeds. And the main asset of the Order are no donations from millions of believers but children born with black eyes. These children are called "seers" because they can see the future and look within the mysteries of the past. It is believed that the seers are chosen by gods and that the Most High watch mortals through their eyes. From infancy the seers are taken away from their families to the Order where they are given to drink potions depriving them of their consciousness. To the regret of the Order, only a few are born seers so scientists try to create "the messengers of gods" artificially, by means of experiments.
    Certainly, nobody believes in a fairy-tale about the divinity of black eyes anymore, except for the desperate ordinary people who have nobody else to ask for help.
    But who knows, what if the gods watched for real?...
    The player is invited to walk through his way with Luca, a hired killer who was born with only one god’s eye. You will have to decide on what party to join in an unfolding conflict between the Order and the Alliance, and also to determine who really Luca is – a simple murderer or something more.

    Characters
    Luca
    Luca is the main character. He earns money being a hired killer. He has only one “god’s eye “ that he hides under a blindfold. Luca doesn’t want to enter the war (doesn’t matter whether it’s for the right cause or not), his own small world, far away from the Order’s intrigues, is good enough for him. However, one fact changes everything…

    Dora
    Dora is a victim of the Order’s unsuccessful experiments in an attempt of creating« the seers » artificially. She managed to escape from the Order’s facility when she was ten and she first met Luca in the slums. Dora has a sweet temper but a strong will. From child hood she decided to fight for the Alliance where she found a shelter and a refuge.

    Cloyd
    Cloyd is a former military man whose sister was a seer. He has been hiding her from the Order for fifteen years but in the end he couldn’t save her. Cloyd has a harsh temper, his own codes of honor, and he won’t stop until he achieves the intended goal.

    White Lady
    The White Lady is the first leader of the Order. Cruel and mysterious woman, she thinks that she controls the balance of powers in the country. She got her nickname for her color preference in clothing.

    Garey
    Garey is the leader of the Alliance. He is physically undeveloped but very smart. In the past Garey was a professor of a University, and in his spare time he created his own drug dealing net. Even though he hides himself behind words of virtue, he only cares of himself.

    Spider
    Spider is the deputy of the White Lady, the second leader of the Order. He is smart, charming, able to find an approach  to people. At the same time he is diagnosed with alexithymia (he can’t understand and almost doesn’t feel any emotions). If he had an idol – that would be Hannibal Lector. He is acquainted with Luca. Before joining the Order he had worked with Luca for two years.

    Leland
    Leland is the third leader of the Order. He loves ballet and makes considerable donations for the needs of art, he also supplies arms. He was married five times but none of his wives could outlive the first year of marriage. Leland is sure that his ancestors were aristocrats. He collects porcelain dolls, five of them have faces of his deceased wives.

    Astra
    Astra is the fourth leader of the Order. She dreams about taking the place of the White Lady. She has three children ( all girls, she adopted each of them).  She favors the illegal organ trade. She was the one who caught Cloyd’s sister.
    Astra suffers from fits of melancholy. She doesn’t see the sense neither in her and nor in others’ lives. Only the fight for power helps her to distract herself from painful thoughts.

    Abby
    Abby is Luca’s  friend, who he has been raising since she was ten.  She is a cheerful girl. She dreams of a new life for her and for Luca. She saves money for moving to a different country.

    Nancy
    Nancy is a popular seamstress in the slums. It was precisely her who found Luca and raised him like her own son. Nancy is a rather rude and simple woman, she values her relatives more than anything.

    Today, I'm adding a few animated character portraits. I'm one of those visual novel fans who finds characters with full animation a bit distracting and painful on the eyes, but our character artist has created some lovely, subtle blinking animations to bring the characters to life a little without causing eyestrain.

    I've been working on a visual novel based on my own writing. It is a freeware visual novel and I intend to keep it free.
    It is built with TyranoBuilder, Blender, Daz3D, and GIMP for post processing of CG renders.

    Book of Zhu: Legacy is a visual novel starring Aya, princess, martial artist, and future empress of the Zhu empire, who will find herself faced with the reality of what the future holds for her. The world depicted in-game is inspired by Wuxia films, as well as anime such as Fist of the North Star, Kenichi, and Katanagatari, and is being painstakingly brought to life by my team and I for this Visual Novel and beyond. Over the course of the game you will experience firsthand the upper class of society within the country of Zhu, glimpses of the larger world, and of course many martial arts battles.
     
     
    The game will follow a central storyline focusing on Aya and how her life starts to change over the course of about a year, with differing choices available that change the details presented during the story and what aspects of the world come into focus.
     In addition to the central storyline there are several side paths focusing on specific characters that are mostly determined by who you spend the most time with and whose story you progress the most during the early parts of the game, though some alternate versions of paths are triggered by hidden flags and events. Some of these will be romantic in focus, but others will allow you to see different sides of various characters, experience different aspects of the world, as well as different fight sequences.
     
     
    The game will also be free. 
     

     

     Aya: The protagonist, heiress to both the Imperial Throne and her family's martial arts style. She is a girl eager to prove herself as both a future leader and a fighter to her mother, the Empress.
     
     

    Rin: Aya's cousin and a fellow princess. She is renowned for both her beauty and talent in the magical arts. She doesn't take her position seriously and prefers to indulge in pleasure instead of studying or training.
     

    Rani: Aya's loyal bodyguard and best friend. Despite living in the palace she has a reputation as a thug and spends a lot of her free time dealing with low-lifes and delinquents.
     

    Dokura : Rani’s mother, loyal retainer for the Imperial family, and one of the Empire's most respected warriors. She is seen by Aya as an aunt of sorts, someone always looking out for her that she can turn to.
     

    The Empress: Aya's mother and the absolute ruler of their people. She is loved as a living representation of Zhu tradition and feared for the swift and harsh retribution that tradition demands. For better or worse every action she makes is part of a legacy she will leave behind for Aya someday.

(20 hour game)   Estimated release:~Summer 2017   “Whether friend or tyrant, I will become a King!"   Welcome to the Rift, a dimensional tear located in Canaan where the ancient gods were created and where you must prove your worthiness to lead the world of men. You have allies and the training needed to fight, but nothing will prepare you for the wonders and horrors of the unstable plains in the Rift.     Manage Respect, Relationships, and Mental will when making decisions. Assigning team members to missions best suited for them. Discovering weaknesses to epic enemies through investigations. Collecting real world lore and in game lore by discovering hidden items. Unlocking secrets of the past by collecting memory gems. Making timed decisions and avoiding damage in high intensity situations. Completing certain missions and training will gain you very limited talent points to specialize your character in lore friendly ways.     Respect   You are a leader. You must earn the respect of your soldiers! Decisions you make and the success of those decisions will affect the confidence your allies have in you. If you fail a lot, they will lose confidence and go rogue during critical decisions. You may even lose command. A true Pharaoh never loses command…       Kinship   While how successful you are in decision making and your sense in the field affects the way they see you, it does not help one bit on how they think of you as a person. In order to get on their good side, you must appeal to their innate personalities. One cannot please everyone so make your choices wisely. It is worth noting that Kinship affects how allies act when not around you or when not commanded.     Stability   You are the strongest. Unfortunately, you are also the most flawed… You have an issue with Dementia and you must suppress these voices throughout your time in the Rift. The tradeoff is considerable though because when you were young, and you let the voices run wild, you could do things others could only dream of. In these dark days, will you allow your mind to slip in order to wield more power or will you avoid such pleasures and rely on knowledge of self?     The rift has stood for thousands of years, since the day Nun arrived from the planet Nibiru. Located in the barren lands of Canaan, this void was created to keep the outside world uncontaminated while Nun worked on his creations. He spent centuries studying the humans and when he figured out this world, he created ancients similar to the life found on his home planet. They warred with each other inside the Rift until only 3 families remained. When they left the Rift, Nun used a stability gem to alter reality and hide the incomprehensible damage done. But now, thousands of years since the great sundering, Nun has created another race of beings to combat his creations from ions past. In order for them to prove themselves, they must survive the Rift, as it were during the time of the ancients. Stability is no more! Can the mortals survive the Trials of the Rift?   There are many different types of quests in Black Sands. We will briefly go through some of them to better understand the gameplay mechanics involved in each. In Black Sands, time, health, and deployment all work against you as you stride to prepare yourself for the final battle with Nun.   Scouting - designed to seek new quests exclusively. Minimal danger   Investigation - A quest that requires discipline and perception. Player must decipher material and decide what is important and not. Proper investigation rewards secrets.   Tracking - This is an extremely heavy skill check category that requires quick decision making and a little luck. These missions are available only once before they go back into the quest pool.   Social - This is a quest where you develop relationships with the other characters and learn more about them.   Instant Events - Automatically happen when certain criteria are met. May have nothing to do with prior tasks.   Group Events - The entire group must participate. Nun will go over your notes and inspect your facility whenever this happens.   Epic Events - Storyline Events that are either triggered by actions or chose by the player. These tend to have more decision making then other events.   Exploration - A quest designed to explore unknown locations. These quests have no prior knowledge so player must use their wits to move forward. The farther you get, the better the rewards. These missions can be ended at any time but there is no guarantee you can return.     This game is directly inspired by Dragon Age and Telltale. Their strong narratives and crucial game changing decisions inspired me to design a visual novel unlike any before it.   Additional motivation was found in the way Hollywood depicts middle eastern and Saharan people. We do a lot of research and use annotations in game to teach the actual history behind the fantasy of our world.   Future   We will be converting all sprites to Live2d and making them look a bit more realistic and 20x more brutal.
