I do think my most embarrassing moment was explaining to my parents that I translate porn games for a hobby.
It went good and I can still read VNs and translate them with a clear conscience, but for that 2-hour talk, I really wanted to dig a ditch and go die.

There's a lot I consider really good, and I don't really have a unified number one choice, but I have favourites for different genres.
Bishoujo Mangekyou series is excellent, for example. Especially the first one.

I'd say so.
I started with moege and it still covers over half of all the visual novels I've read to this day. They've given me laughs, if nothing else. And even after the gigantic hiatus, I've had with VNs, guess what was the thing I picked up first? Another moege.
'Guess I can't escape them, I like SoL and cute stuff anyways.

Goblin Slayer is also extremely dark with great world-building, but it doesn't have a dark protagonist. Dark protagonists are a rarity, y'see. You can give it a whirl, however. I think it's localized via Yen Press.

Ascendance of a Bookworm is horrendously slow, slower than anything I've read before. Therein lies also its core strength. It's an isekai story with amazing world-building. If you can get past how rather whiny the protagonist is in the beginning, it's an enjoyable ride. There's also close to no romance until the last third or so.

It is really good if you can get past/like the protagonist and the messed-up tones of it. It's quite refreshing in how absolutely fucked everything is.

From this list, only Kaifuku Jutsushi and Summomed Slaughterer, but both of them are exceptionally dark, especially Slaughterer.
