It's not just WE3.  Shiny Days ended up the way it did in part because Sekai Project was busy with other projects and didn't have time to fix it.  It had JAST's name on the box, and JAST took the fall for the problems, but Sekai Project was doing the work.  Sekai Project is taking on more projects at once than they can handle, and that's a recipe for poor quality and delays.

I think a lot of the people who vote in this polls just look at the covers of the vns, the score (which doesnt tell you much about a vn because tastes are not the same for everyone most of the vns I really really like have a really low or average score.)  or the titles and if it sounds familiar or is a popular series (baldr force is the perfect example of this) they vote it, granted there is no way to know how good a vn is if there is no translation available in the first place but voting for those reasons is just a waste imo.
I'm still amazed on how everyone voted sakura no uta when probably nobody yet played subarashiki "sca-ji's masterpiece"(many many of the people who read it said that they didnt understand a lot of the plot but because scaji is a genius is a 10/10 vn, so yeah is masterpiece just because..or going as far to say "SCA-Ji is far more intelligent than anyone reading this blog entry, including myself." lol) or any of the sca-ji's vns in that matter and the only fully translated vn available that can tell you a bit of his writing is ikikoi which i dare you to say is a masterpiece...

Im just venting a bit ignore my entire post xD

@Rooke especially because its from the creator of spice & wolf it deserves a better treatment than that.
the first one suffered from a non optimal translation paired with partly unnatural wordings & its second one was blessed by countless typos plus an english i dont want to read in a work of literature other than in magazines etc. both ones appear pretty unpolished & raw, nothing i´would like my customers to read for non risking their reading experience to be foiled (not everone re-reads stuff so their pretty much stuck in the fuck by time the re-translation etc will be done & even then, the first read is the most important one)
this is not only about sekai, but in general, if i buy something i expect it to be done in the best way possible and wont accept some halfbaked stuff. "we´ve been already past our estimated schedule" is nothing that works on me, getting it even later to read wont piss me off as much as some rushed crap for whatever reason it may have happened

Haha, that's exactly my genre. The following recommendations have a (good) story and aren't (just) gruesome gorefests. I will not mention the most obvious ones (most Black Cyc games, Innocent Grey, some of elf's masterpieces like Kawarazaki-ke no Ichizoku 2 or all the games which are easily found on vndb with the death of heroine tag). I will also only mention games which have a value beside killing girls. These are good eroge which happen to include the killing of heroines as an important aspect of the story (which makes them obviously even better):

    Heaven -Death Game-:
Main character wins a trip to a deserted island. But as soon as he gets there, a Battle Royale starts and he must kill the other participants to survive. And contrary to most other Battle Royale visual novels... he will kill. This VN is an RPG and you can even decide whether you want new members in your party, or just kill them, hehe. This game has probably the most beautiful death CGs I have ever seen (that's Mink for you) and the story is interesting at first. Sadly, the game is far to easy and you probably don't trigger the really sick events because you are just to good at killing the others.
By the way, look at this delicious teaser:
    3M -Marionettes manipulate the marionette-:
Most people think that this is just a guro nukige, but that's not true. The horror writing is brilliant, characters and story are very engaging. Only downside is that it will probably never get its concluding chapter.
    Hotaruko:
Very good mystery game about your girlfriend and her past you're trying to uncover. Best thing is this nice feature while killing innocent little girls that the animation of the scene is linked to you mouse movement. It's like an interactive killing mini game! Very satisfying. I wish more games had a feature like this.

Some other games where your heroines die horribly, but your main character is not involved in the act of killing (or is he?):
    Love Letter:
Kinda like Kara no Shoujo, the girls around you get killed and you don't know why and want to solve this mystery. Game starts as a nice horror flick, then evolves into some kind of detective story. Story is good and the conclusion satisfying.
    Omokage:
Probably the most gory non-doujin eroge. You are trapped in a mansion and need to escape before you and your friends get killed. Pretty slasher horror-like. Don't look at the screens on its vndb page, they're endgame spoilers.
    13-nin no Uruwashiki Kedamono:
Story is about 13 trapped individuals and the death game they are forced to play. Main character and heroines are pretty bland, secondary characters and their relationships and background stories however are great. Death scenes and CGs are very beautiful (Mink again). Not really a very good game story-wise but the setting and the secondary characters are written very well.

I didn't check before I started writing because there were far to many to bother. Please forgive me. OTL

The most creepy depiction of ancient Japan can be found here: https://vndb.org/v14314
It's a pretty old game, but also pretty realistic in how it shows how dirty and corrupt the old Japan was. The Japanese hate this game because they tend to idealize their history. But for Western people there is tons of information and creepy imagery to be found you probably didn't know of yet. Also, this is one of the two video games Roger Ebert loved. And he hated video games. ^^
It's kinda an open world game and a hidden gem, especially if you have an interest in ancient Japan and Japanese mythology.

The battle system in Seinarukana is simpler and therefore doesn't drag like Yumina's.  You can't change skills during battle so battles are much quicker and don't require so much micromanagement.  The system is essentially a refined version of Aselia's with a greater variety of skills, giving each unit type more versatility.  Also unlike Aselia, the majority of the units in your squad are hero types from the story rather than faceless soldiers.

Yeah, I might still give it a try. I didn't really rule it out completely anyway, but after the first play-through I simply needed a break from it and read something different.
You're not the only one liking it. While I'm not the only one who dislikes the village parts, there's also a fairly large group who seems to like that part in particular. So there's certainly something special about it that seems to cause those split opinions. I do have a hunch though. The section has a very slow pacing and I seem to struggle with those. In general I seem to enjoy VN's with a fast pacing more than others and VN's with a slow pacing less than others.
The problem is most likely that I have a rather slow reading speed, probably caused by the fact that English isn't my mother language although it's probably more than just that. Actually, Clephas wrote a blog a few weeks ago where he directly linked reading speed to enjoyment of a visual novel. It was quite enlightening even if it wasn't particularly long. It actually made me remember that it took me about 2 - 3 days to finish Eden while another guy apparently finished it in just a few hours. I also have to reduce the auto reading speed in VN's almost always since it's way too fast for me with the default setting. So I'm pretty sure that it has something do with that.
Unfortunately, I can't exactly snip with my fingers and double my reading speed. So I'm probably doomed to be not be able to appreciate highly descriptive text like a faster reader. It's a bit frustrating, but since I seem to enjoy most stuff like normal, I can probably live with the few problematic VN's which are written for more advanced readers.

I also have a question - is it possible to omitt every h scenes?
So far from what I have seen - it almost is. Only one inevitable seems to be

But every (fuckin!) walkthrough is focused on 'collect all the p*ssy' type of gameplay, which angers me greatly, because we all know how h-scenes can ruin great mood in story driven VNs.
Did you know walktrough which is story focused and omitting unnecessary sex? Because I wanted to be 'pure' and have sex only with girl I love, after eventuall love confession or non at all.

Also - does Stella have some CG with her? While playing on my own I developed some bond with her, I had a scene when Reji found probably her pendant, but never had a chance to return it to her (cause bad ending happened before I could). And is any walkthrough, which I couldn't find, 'collecting' all of her random encounter scenes? Right now I'm on rout to Normal Ending, and while visiting Stella on one point, they barely know each other at end of April, which was sad.

Tyr got a reaction from Vorathiel in Who are charages aimed for?
Uh, how about the game which pretty much invented the genre? https://vndb.org/v185
Back then, most eroge were pretty linear. That also meant that they were quite short. Most of the time, you could H every heroine in one run (with the last being your new girlfriend most of the time, lol)
The idea behind this "new" dating sim concept was to enhance playing time with challenging the reader. Firstly, you only get one heroine at most, thus several runs are necessary. Secondly, the "challenge" here is to get the girl. That means you had to "capture" your heroine which essentially means to win her heart.
The difference to modern charage is that there is no challenge in modern eroge whatsoever. The reader expects to get the route he wants the first time. And the protagonist will solve the drama for him, the reader just needs to read. If not, he will complain about "stupid choices". He will also complain if the girls doesn't like him from the beginning, because that's not helping with his escapism. He wants to read something where he, the player, is loved by everyone.
I'm not trying to judge, mind you. But there is clearly a difference in what the audience expected back then and now.
Some English translated examples are https://vndb.org/v241 (dating sim) and https://vndb.org/v206 (vn).

Yeah right. If you want to read about good characters, charages are the way to go. No self-insertion at all.
To actually answer OP's question: There are different types of beta-males. The type Vorathiel probably is too is the self-consciously type who knows too much about himself and his flaws that he can't fantasize anymore to be someone else. It irritates him to see a protag who does something he would never do. And it's especially irritating if protag gets the girls with being someone the reader could never be.
If I were a beta-male, I would probably be this type too.
Interestingly, Japanese otakus seem to be another type of beta. They don't have any self-consciousness left. They don't have any personality whatsoever and can assimilate everything they read as long as it's cool. That's why we have so many overpowered main characters although their target audience are socially retarded 3D-hetares. I don't think this type of otakuness is healthy and it's probably one of the reasons why animu and eroge are getting so bad.

Key protagonists are the literal definition of not doing anything and being super useless (but nice) and getting every single woman to fall in love with you. Every Key protagonist also has the bumbling idiot friend who makes them look so much cooler than they actually are. They are the protagonists that never act on sex (because if men do that it's evil), thus showing ladies how it's done and then watching them become horny and proceed to consistently have sex until drama sets in.
When drama comes up in a woman's life, they stand there pretending they can actually solve something. In the end, they do literally nothing and merely wait for the right opportunity to have an epic speech reminding their girlfriend that they will and have always loved them even though they [the woman] are insecure about themselves and don't believe it's possible to have such an awesome boyfriend. At this point, time leaps occur and some magic is sprinkled on and everything is perfect.
    The end.
