Katatsumuri reacted to solidbatman in Introducing: The Other Fuwanovel Staff
Believe it or not, the forums are not the only part of Fuwanovel. This may surprise some of you, but there are plenty of us that do work for Fuwanovel, often without any help from the "Fuwa Staff". I feel that these people are just as much staff for the site as the Forum mods, and I would like to take a moment to recognize them.

For starters, Zakamutt has almost single handily been carrying the Fuwa Gazette for a while now. He puts in a lot of effort to his Status posts and recruitment posts, aznd has been looking for a team fruitlessly for a while now. Not only does he work as the head of the blog, he also does a ton of the lifting on the official Fuwanovel twitter account, typically posting news at the same moment I do. He also just so happens to be the newest member of the Facebook team and has only screwed up one post to date.

Next up is another blog staff member. JuicyYuuji just started today, but nothing caught fire and no deaths were reported. Indications are he will do just fine.

Down is considered one of the Fuwa Staff thanks to his moderation of the forums. He also does some off-forum work in the form of FuwaReviews and assisting in the Fuwanovel twitter account. I made him read School Days HQ, and he absolutely hated it. Despite that, he is moving on to the next review, like a trooper. A true survivor if I've ever seen one.

Ryechu reviews nukige and forced me to read ToS agreements to see if we could even post the reviews. Turns out we can. Fuck you censorship. He doesn't just review nukige for FuwaReviews though. He also took on Cho Dengeki Stryker and Magical Witch Diary or something. He also likes Raichu.

No man insults Nohman, the third and final reviewer for the FuwaReviews team. He turns out some really good stuff and obeys my every command. You may also know him as Bill Murray, but I know his true name for those curious.

Nayleen is next up here. Fuck if I know what he does, but sometimes he breaks things, other times he fixes them. Just depends how much he's been drinking. He does some of the coding for Fuwanovel, so if anything seems broken, you know who to blame.

All hail the king of forum spam, Nosebleed. When he isn't posting 100 times a day on the forums, he makes Facebook posts for the page. Usually, he has to go in and answers questions that I reply super sarcastically to. We still await the day when Nico Nico Nii shows itself on the FB page. It will happen.

Ryouuuuu/Kyouuuuu might not be able to decide on what his name is, but thats alright. We forgive him anyway. Our resident Facebook Key specialist, if there is Key news about, he is on the case. 99% of my skype messages from him are usually along the lines of "Angel Beats hyyyppeeee!!!!!"

Beato is listed as a forum mod, but those pretty game download pages, thats her work. She is the one to usually get those pages up and running. We don't know much of her true nature, but as a Swede, I can only assume she controls Tay like a puppet.

dale is the reason you can fap to a high amount of seeds when downloading games. As the owner of the seedbox we use, nothing gets seeded without his permission. A warning to all lolicons.

For your podcast needs, look no farther than OriginalRen. Even if the episode count is out of order, rest assured you'll find plenty of interesting things in the episodes. Inner workings of the Fuwa staff, interviews with translators, and discussions with regular members all appear at one point or another.

There you have it. Most of, if not all of the Fuwanovel Staff. These guys work off the forums on the real parts of Fuwanovel. Please give these people some thanks and support for what they do off the forums as I feel they are often overlooked on Fuwanovel.

If I forgot anyone else, please let me know. As much as I try to keep up with the staff, sometimes someone will slip through the cracks, especially with all the new changes.

Katatsumuri reacted to Clephas in Shower Thoughts on Character Archetypes
I'm going to be blunt.  The formation and use of archetypes in fiction is impossible to avoid.  Before we had the 'refined' archetypes we have today, we had other more basic archetypes, such as the tragic hero, the mentor, the damsel in distress, etc.

Rather than focusing on whether a character fits within an archetype, focus on how well the archetype is used.  An archetype that is used to create a more interesting story has value, an archetype that is used solely because it is a recognizable figure isn't.  It is simple as that.

Some of the best pieces of fiction out there, such as Star Wars for instance, use archetypes to form their characters... but create something wondrous out of them anyway.  While I frequently complain about archetypes in moege, that is because they are just slapping archetypes into the game without thinking about how to use them properly or how to make them interesting.  The same goes for anime, manga, and Western fiction.  My complaints about archetypes always refer to this issue... using them without doing so effectively.  Using archetypes out of laziness, without the competence to make them into something greater, is a crime against storytelling.

I PRE-ORDERED SAKURA SPIRIT FROM MANGAGAMER. IN RETROSPECT, I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER. ANYWAY, THAT GOT ME A STEAM KEY FOR IT AS WELL. I CONSIDERED ADDING IT TO MY ACCOUNT IRONICALLY, THEN BARFED FOR THREE HOURS STRAIGHT. BUT... PERHAPS YOU CAN HANDLE THE DELICIOUS IRONY? DO YOU JUST REALLY LIKE COMPETITIONS?

    WILL YOU GO THE DISTANCE?

TO ENTER THE COMPETITION, POST AN IMAGE OF AN ANIME GIRL, COMBINED WITH A FRUIT, OR VEGETABLE. OR BOTH. MAYBE MANY OF THEM?

THE BEST PICTURE, CHOSEN BY ME (GO AHEAD AND GUESS WHAT MY TASTES ARE), WILL EARN YOU THE KEY. I DON'T BLAME YOU IF YOU WANT TO GIVE IT AWAY AGAIN OR WHATEVER, BY THE WAY.

Katatsumuri reacted to solidbatman in Fuwanovel's Winter Steam Gift Exchange
Season's greetings fuwanerds! I am solidbatman, your lovable, mighty, sexy, hero. It is the time of giving, and the time of getting. Families around the world will gather together and judge each other for the gifts they get. "Oh look, socks again. Thank you sooo much." It is a time honored tradition to receive socks when you asked for a new cape.

Anyway, as many of your posts show in a long winded manner, some of you consider Fuwanovel a family. So I felt that we should recreate the spirit of giving and getting here. And what a perfect chance we have, with the Steam sale upon us now.

Here is how this will work. One person posts a game that they will gift on Steam. The first person to respond wanting the game will get that game, but only if they post up a game that they will be giving. For example, if I post Bad Rats, and Emi wants that game, she will post for it, and include another game for the next person. So she gets Bad Rats, and offers Farming Simulator 2014. Ren really wants to farm, so he posts that he wants the game, and then he offers Astrobreed, and so on and so on.

Feel free to stick to the $5 section on Steam. There are plenty of good games in it, so don't feel the need to break the bank. This is just a fun little way for everyone to do a little giving, and get something in return.

I'll start things off with a fun little game called Race the Sun, and endless runner type game. Be the first to respond and offer another game in order to receive the game. Remember, always offer another game for the next person. Don't just respond wanting the game. I will have those posts removed. You can take part more than once if you want, but don't try to hog all the games.

While I started out as a Nintendo Fanboy, I've since then moved to PC (Which in my opinion is quite frankly a lot better than the other choices due to various circumstances), but have as of late begun to play on a PS3 due to it's exclusives. But... PC is still my favorite.

Katatsumuri reacted to Clephas in Why Japanese is easier to learn than you think
I know that to many Fuwans, the learning of Japanese seems to be a huge hurdle, especially considering how different it is from Western languages.  However, there are a few reasons why it can be easier than you think.

    The Obvious

No other language has so much of its media overseas, except maybe English.  Moreover, the existence of tens of thousands of episodes of subtitled anime gives a near infinite amount of source material to draw from when learning the spoken language.

    The Less Obvious
Perhaps the biggest hurdle for the average person when learning Japanese is that it is so essentially different from any Western language.  However, this can actually be an advantage.  For one thing, there is little of the confusion you experience when you encounter similar terms in German, Spanish, or French, which can lead to mispronunciations.  Moreover, the fact that the Japanese language is so essentially different from a social linguistics perspective means that if you just take the time to understand why and how the Japanese think differently, the language becomes infinitely easier to grasp.  If anything, the fact that there is almost nothing in the way of similarities between the American mentality and the Japanese mentalities makes it easier to consciously shift one's consciousness.  Too many Americans, when learning Japanese, make the essential mistake of just assuming the Japanese are thinking the same as they are while speaking a different language (this is common to all Western cultures).  Let go of those preconceptions and things will be a lot easier for you.

The existence of Kanji also serves to make understanding easier, for those who choose to attack initially from the written perspective.  By learning kanji and how it is used to form the Japanese language, one can rapidly increase understanding...if and only if this study of kanji is preceded by an intellectual understanding of grammar.

A major difficulty for people who can't comprehend context clues
Pseudo-anglicanisms.  Basically, these are katakana terms drawn from English or other languages that are not used in the same way as they are in their original language.  Most katakana terms are essentially the same as their originals, but ones like マンション (which is basically a certain type of rental apartment) really don't mean the same as their original term.  About seventy percent of everyone who tries to learn Japanese never fix their understanding of terms like these, so pay attention to things that you think are used oddly, so you can understand how your initial understanding could be wrong.

    Internalization
This is the most important step of learning Japanese.  If you are having to logically consider what particles turn a sentence into and transform Japanese into English to understand it, you will never, ever be fluent.  This isn't a joke or an exaggeration.  Even if your speech is halting, if your comprehension is accurate without the need to translate in your head, you can be said to be reasonably fluent.  The best method to reach this stage isn't reading a textbook (in fact textbook learning just gets in the way of this) is immersion, which basically means giving up your original language for a period of one to three months, immersing yourself only in Japanese media.  During this period, you should avoid speaking, thinking, or listening to your native language, if at all possible.  If you are in high school, I'd suggest just using your summer break for this.  If you are an adult, this is harder.  It isn't like you can take a long vacation if you have to work or go to college.  However, this is effectively the only method by which you can internalize Japanese without your original language getting in the way of understanding at some point.  The only other possible method would be to get work in Japan and just live there for a period of time sufficient to create the same effect.

Internalization is really a step you need to take to become permanently fluent in any language, not just Japanese.  However, it is particularly effective with Japanese, because the language is so distinct form our own.

Note: Basic grammatical understanding must always precede immersion if you want it to be effective.
