You can also often see, that sometimes developers strive to provide equal number of scenes for each heroine, and it's obvious that some of them were added just to meet the quota.

Reminds me of a certain dream scene in FSN. :serasmug:

Edit. As for Hoshimemo, I'm actually in the same boat as @adamstan... with the exception that at some point after buying it I realized that this game is clearly very far from my tastes, so I doubt that I'll play it even if that new translation ever comes out (though at this point I'm pretty sure it won't).

  2. Anime: I guess, Shinsekai Yori. Though Clannad is also up there somewhere. And The Twelve Kingdoms.

Manga: I don't really read that many manga, and I generally prefer an anime adaptations if it exists, so the most stories I read in the manga format are generally pretty niche, and while they are nice on their own, I can't really say I remember reading something that amazing. I guess, I'll say Bokura no Kiseki (though I'm very far behind the translations, and, sadly, I don't think an official localization exists).

It's funny, considering FC has the worst localization of the whole series, as the first translator back then did a horrible job. It's full of mistranslations and changes quite a few things. (Like, English Estelle is dumber than Japanese Estelle, making them almost different characters)

Are you talking about the Steam version here? I just learned that apparently the translation was heavily revised for it, and I'm a bit curious how accurate the current translation is.

Anyway, I'm still playing Trails in the Sky, and I'm currently at chapter 2 of the first game. Overall, so far it's pretty good. The plot is somewhat cliche so far, but it still has time to change. Gameplay... well, I like it so far. I'm playing in the hard mode, and I'd say it's just hard enough to make the game somewhat challenging without making it tedious. I had some minor problems right at the start before I got used to the gameplay, but right now everything is going fine.

The funny part: I found myself at thought that if the backstories of some minor and background characters were published in a short-story format, I would love to read those. 🙂

and is the main version (little busters and little busters refrain) ecchi?

I mean, there are some panty shots, if I remember correctly, so it's more ecchi than Clannad, But it's still pretty much nothing compared to some other things.

is little busters as long as clannad?

I may be mistaken, but I think Little Busters is even longer? At least, they are similar in length. Well, if you enjoy Key stuff, you will probably enjoy it.

As for the other recommendations... Honestly, there are so many good things that I honestly don't know what to recommend.

Oh yeah, I forgot we're missing two stories from chronicles volume 3 as well: War Ensemble and Last Divers

Hmmm. I looked it up, and yeah, it looks like the two stories from Chronicles 4 are still missing (I believe, you meant to say volume 4 instead of volume 3). Well, it's a shame. I hope they will be released in some new fandisk.

PS. As for the nukige spinoff, I'm pretty sure it was just a joke story about alien monster girls or something. I skipped it when I played Chronicles vol. 1.

The multiple protagonists thing is bugging me a bit though.

It doesn't really have multiple protagonists, as far as I understand from playing the fan-translation of ep. 0 and all the information I've seen online. Episode 0 is pretty much a standalone story on its own, which pretty much introduces the setting and has different characters than the later episodes. Starting with ep. 1, it's pretty much one VN split into parts, and these parts all have one single protagonist. If you are confused by the vndb pages, then, like I mentioned in my previous post, the Japanese release of Alternative Chronicles consisted of multiple non-connected stories, and most of them were already released in English, while this release only consists of TDA, which was only a part of the original games. This is why this release is marked as "incomplete" on vndb.

PS. Also, for the same reason, the length tags may not be accurate. For reference, as far as I remember, episode 0 on its own was somewhere in the lower "short" category, maybe even "very short". The later episodes may be longer.

Girls however... I dunno if there are discriminatory reasons for this, but they seem much more free to write girl protagonists however they want. They can be lewd, they can drink even underage, they can spy on guys when they're bathing etc. This happened in male animes too, but 20 years ago.

Girl protagonists in shounen and seinen - sure.

Protagonists in shoujo (including otome games, as far as I know) either have extremely meek personalities and always rely on guys to solve all of their problems, or extremely thoughtless and always make guys to stop them from doing something dumb. They are also almost required to be completely dense about romance. (and have small breasts).

There are exceptions, of course, but these particular tropes repeat so often that it's pretty annoying.

    Trails in the Sky

Yep, this one. I'm not really sure if I'm going to finish the whole series since it seems to be pretty massive, but if I do I'll probably follow the first suggested order in this tweet.

I haven't played it for that much time yet, but I'm really enjoying it so far! Though I'm not really sure how interesting my impressions are going to be, considering that my experience with JRPGs is pretty close to zero, so I don't really have anything to compare it to, lol.

Ryu must have really hated working on this, probably because it was contract work and not his own. It was obvious that he just wanted to get it over with, so he could work on his own stuff again.

To me it feels like somebody wanted to have him work on this since he was known for writing horror, but they didn't realize what made his previous works good and gave him too many constraints for the actual writing. It's funny how this VN completely contradicts what Ryukishi himself believes about writing good horror.

By the way, I'm currently at chapter 5, and it made my impression even worse than I wrote in my previous post. It just went in the most cliche direction possible. Honestly, I'll probably try reading it a bit more, but I'm very close to following @Silvz's advice and just dropping it completely.
