Thanks, everyone for your help. I'm just trying to make sense of a VN using several different machine translators and dictionaries. Unfortunately, I don't read or speak Japanese. However, I am picking up bits and pieces as I go along.

This is an exercise in futility. Machine translators are there to aid people who already know some Japanese. Knowing no Japanese the machine only serves to spew out meaningless gibberish. Where's that clock picture... someone's bound to post it shortly.

  2. I find the ANN reviews quite reasonable and they do a blow-by-blow on a weekly basis as episodes come out. However my only criticism is they probably spend too much time explaining the story and not enough time critically appraising the shows though that doesn't matter that much since you'll only read those particular weekly reviews if you've seen the episode yourself and want to see what other people make of them. I try to rate each show's episodes as they come out and find the community's overall ratings not that dissimilar to my own.

I think SAO 2 is just as terrible and not worth it as the ALO arc because it essentially commits all the same mistakes ALO did but with different characters. And no, Mother's Rosario wasn't worth all the shit.

For once I agree 100% with you. SAO2 was so try hard for a different genre that I could barely even finish it and now I'm not sure why I did.

It can't be that bad can it!? BTY I just finished part 1 of the first season.

I guess I can make sense that taking the story any farther other than to find out what happened to Asuna would kinda be like dragging you through the mud. Well thanks for the warning guys, but I still want to at least watch part 2. I just can't leave things half finished when it comes to things, i'll be sure to lower my expectations to a decent level that way the suffering I might go through be lessened. Guess i'll just be another of the FOOLS that doesn't listen to reason.:wahaha: Cross my fingers that season 2 will make up for things.

You could probably just watch the 1st and last episodes of part 2 and be no worse off than watching the whole thing. At least then you find out what happens.

I've seen Attack on Titan and admittedly it's good. I'm waiting for its second season. I've watched Absolute Duo but unfortunately my rating for it is not quite high. I'll check the rest out.

I've included some that I rate highly that don't necessarily rate highly by everyone else. If you want the list trimmed of those, remove absolute duo, kiddy grade and my hime.

I actually don't mind whether it's old-school or futuristic, I just want some action, plus comedy if possible.

Action is only intermediate in that show I recommended as it has a lot of political intrigue and dialogue. Comedy virtually non-existent in it though.

On the other hand, if you want tons of action and comedy, and I can't tell since you don't really have a watchlist whether you've seen it or not, you can't go past the other full metal - Full Metal Panic and its sequel Full Metal Panic the Second Raid. Mecha but superb characters, action and comedy.

EDIT: I went through my own watchlist and came up with these great shows for action (though not so much comedy):

    Eureka seven (original)

    Last exile (original)

    Absolute duo

    Attack on Titan

    Cross Ange

    Gurren Lagann

    Kiddy Grade

    My Hime

I've been planning to watch Ushio to Tora.

Ushio to Tora is very good and gets much better by season 2, but it is not quite finished yet, and as much as I'm enjoying it, there's no way I'd rate it up there with FMAB standard.

If you're okay with old school anime with lots of subplots intrigue, some action and a sci-fi bent, try Legend of Galactic Heroes; 110 episodes and a massive space opera but the old school animation may put you off unless you're driven more by story than animation.

Maybe this is just how Australians talk? @Rooke?

As a fellow Australian who's translated I can tell you this is easy to do no matter how good your English is normally and it has nothing to do with being Australian. You look at the original line, you translate it, you get to the next sentence and realise you missed the nuance in one of the words, you go back and change one word. Then you translate the next sentence and realise the tense was wrong. You go back and change the tense of one word and go back to the new sentence and realise you now have to alter something to match the first sentence. Then you change another word and feel like you've done those two sentences and move to the next line to translate. You never go back to see what the whole line ended up looking like so you don't even know you've ended up creating a cryptic crossword.

This largely goes away if you double translate scenes by going back over the entire scene but given how long translation takes in the first place, there's a good chance most translators skip it and leave it for the TLC and editors to fix. No doubt if someone was translating professionally, the approach would be more thorough. I'm certainly embarrassed by some of the shit my editors have had to clean up.

progress took a dive this week. i came across something that broke me a bit. ive heard rumors of the horror but ive never imagined this. i came across.....................................the first h-scene. :o

seriously i had a difficult time with it. it just drained all of my energy. not like that. so much repetition with moaning and sounds i could barely go on. i almost thought about forgetting putting words in and just leaving them blank but that wouldnt be fair. well now im past the first h-scene and ready and excited to tl more!!

Good luck my friend. These are without a doubt the scenes that can make even the most avid translator slow down/stall. I have a site that you may find helpful for newcomers to H sfx translation:

  10. Flying witch was delightful this week.

Tanaka-kun continues to be a nice laugh.

    Luluco stupid fun.

Ushio + Tora2 has been simply fantastic for quite a few episodes now and still is.

Haifuri was kinda hohum but okay. At least it's a known quantity now.

Kiznaiver pulled out all the stops this week with a sensational episode. Considering how banal I thought this series was to begin with, I'm really surprised.

Asterisk continues to disappoint - considering this was a climactic episode it was pretty meh. It shits me how this show could have been so much better but got the double season funding when Rakudai which is almost the identical story got funding for only one season and was a trillion times better than this shit. EDIT: I just remembered I said pretty much the same thing during last season :P

Overall though, a great couple of days' watching.

Brevity is the soul of wit.

    Can you elaborate?

Go with the smaller font. English is rarely as concise as Japanese and you'll never keep the nuance if you're forever trimming text. I did the same in ToHeart2 but then that was a massive font with fullscreen walls of text.

God I loved that anime, it was freaking hilarious. Pretty positive that's a one and done anime unfortunately.

There was a "selection" that suggested "watch season2". Can't remember if it was the final episode or OVA but I suspect they were hoping for funding for another season.

  13. Finished My mental choices are completely interfering with my school romantic comedy aka NouCome and the OVA. It was pretty good and quite amusing, though it just notches up another scar on my unresolved harem list, awaiting more seasons of more unresolution [sic].

  14. Welcome to the forums. I've done a similar journey to yourself though I date back to 1995. There is no need to try and force VNs down your throat, but the vast scope of what's out there now is nothing like the wasteland of just a decade ago. I'm pretty sure you'll find something to pique your interest, you just have to find the right genre. Good VNs are truly amazing unique pieces of art.

All them talks about decades and years makes you sound old, but I bet 50 bucks that you're younger than another member 'round these parts who goes by the alias "Rooke"

And I'm even older, and though my interest in VNs waxed and waned over the last 20 years, it never died out. Currently I can't get enough of them so much that I'm translating as a pastime. You never know where your journey will end up.

  15. Finished Acchi Kocchi (was okay). Skipped through shuffle (didn't watch). Finished K-On2 with my wife (enjoyed it more 2nd watching).

Watching Cardcaptor, NouCome, Ouran high school host club, Chihayafuru, Special A, Maid Sama. Still have K-On movie to watch with wife.

  16. Netoge was decent this week.

    Spoiler

Glad they didn't use the account takeover to make the show turn dark or anything; they kept the tone as light as it has been so far. I'd hate for it to get too serious since that's just not in keeping with the style. I also got sick of Nishimura not going the extra 1% effort required to explain his romance for Ako to her more clearly so I'm glad they ended this episode with him clarifying it - though there is a good chance they may effectively backtrack on following episodes with her still not understanding the difference between the real world and the net, and that would suck.

Kabaneri had a nice interlude in there before the shit hits the fan again.

Assclass was the surprise this week, taking full marks from me.

    Spoiler

That last scene blew my mind and it's even funnier in Japanese since Karasuma says お前がうちで働け which means both "work with us" and "work at our/my home", and what he says later makes it clearer what he really meant. Great stuff.
