Clover Day's is one of my personal favourites of all time for me and it's in that list.
  3. Doubt it. In every art form there is always a notion that the past was better than the present, but it's my firm belief that this is universally the effect of time making people remember only the better releases and forgetting how much other shit was released at the same time. A classic only becomes a classic because it's stood the test of time. A modern work cannot, by definition, be a classic till it has become old. We only remember the classics of the past and compare them to the broad landscape of the present.
  4. One of my all time favourites, and 10/10 is Cross Game. I recently found out that the creator had a much earlier work called Touch, that is almost 30 years old. I started watching it and it's not bad. Shows the change in anime sensibilities over time and moves much more slowly. It took is a baseball series, but there is much more emphasis on relationships and less on the baseball, but the parallels in the story are pretty strong. It is also twice as long as Cross Game at 101 episodes, so it's a nice long watch. It's keeping me busy as a late night filler series at least, and having made it through season 1 (27 episodes), I'm pretty sure I'll end up watching the whole lot. The extra 20+ years of experience in writing Cross Game really shows though.
  5. Just for reference, the question is mostly rhetorical, to make the religious collectors think more about what they're doing. I've been playing VNs for 20 years now, am happily married with a wife of 23 years, and 2 teenage kids. I don't have a single physical copy of any VN on the shelf, and yes I've bought many many games.
  6. For those males here that are religiously collecting boxes of hard core 2D porn that are sitting on their shelves, what do you plan to do if and when you start a relationship, or have kids? Do you honestly think that there are (m)any women that would be happy to accept someone with that on their shelves? It's akin to leaving 3D porn on the shelf.
  7. To Heart 2 A classic reference charage that defined the modern genre, with 11 heroines and 9 routes.
  8. There are definitely alive projects around, and not all of them have threads on this forum, but look around and you'll find them. However, what @Plk_Lesiak says is basically correct, the fan translation scene has mostly achieved what its aim was - to make for more consistent and a wider range of English releases on a professional level. It hasn't reached the level of success that the anime market has, but it's improved out of sight compared to a decade ago. Most people with enough skills to actually do a decent VN translation are usually looking for translation work long term (unlike myself) and eventually get snapped up or contracted by an official company. This usually kills off their ability to work on fan translation even if they want to.
  9. It definitely was, but check the opening post, I keep updating it and I'd put it there already a while back.
  10. Sure you can't have brilliant writing in the translation when you started with Sakura games...
  11. I did not blame the translator. The rating is for overall translation/editing/localisation.
  12. No, I mean that it's written in such a way in English that all cultural aspects of Japan come across perfectly well despite the use of perfectly natural English language. Characters should have their personality portrayed perfectly as well. I'm not talking about making it sound like it's in England or the USA.
  13. Indeed, but within the framework of what I think it's still interesting to see how other people view it. Every poll will always be subjective, but at least with obvious steps in the ranking, we can make comparisons between people's opinions. I chose the rating system around the value 5/10 being where the plot is intact (but not much else.) I personally voted a 6 for what it's worth because an intact plot but sloppy writing drives me insane so a 5 would kill me, but 6 is "good enough" for fan charage translations (which is all I read). I'd vote an 8 for official localisations. Alas the last official one I bought wasn't even a 7 (yes I'm looking at you SP.) And yes, even though I read in Japanese, it's still a lot less effort to read in English so I probably read 1 in 5 VNs in English now. I'm almost certain that those that read more plot heavy and literary works by virtue of the material would expect even higher quality since more of the experience is the writing and less is the fapping romance.
  14. Find the value that most matches what you think is most important then, as both scale up in the descriptions. It was overly complex as it was; splitting up the editing and translation components would have rendered the poll impossible. I said as much in my opening post. Obviously no one rating could possibly cover all possibilities, but I listed them as I've seen releases. It's really rare to see a perfectly accurate translation with a shithouse edit, while I've seen valiant efforts at editing on shithouse translations... Alternatively, we could try and debate on what would constitute an ideal set of rankings? This was just something I knocked up in 5 mins.
  15. I agree in principle too. However, I would say of the officially localised releases I've seen or bought, not a single one would get a 9 - most are 6-8, whereas scarily, I've seen stuff that would get a 1 (which fortunately I haven't bought). I agree that 6 or 7 is fine for a fan translation as well - if they're planning on selling it, they're only really selling the translation and it should be the job of the pro company to spruce it up to at least an 8.
  16. Interesting... what are the 5 localisations that you think are a 9?
  17. This is in response to the repeated discussion we get over and over about what is "good enough" localisation, and the recent discussion about the "toxic" response to fan translations in the community. The ranking is entirely my own, and is meant to be non-linear. It does NOT equate to the quality of the original VN, and editing has intentionally been included as part of the ranking for simplicity, even though you may get seriously skewed better quality in either translation (unlikely) or editing. Note this is mostly about fan translations, as I think it's fair to be more critical of official localisations but if you want to comment on those perhaps put in a comment. Sorry if the poll is long, I wanted the options to be very descriptive.
  18. I can't vote because I try to only buy download only versions, but when in Japan (which happens only infrequently) I'll buy physical copies, rip the disk image, then throw out the physical copies...
  19. Three of the above. Only read charage and moege and only if they have H scenes, and mostly read only Japanese. Though I spend even more time on fan translation of the above than actually playing them too.
  20. I'll give a counterexample that has bugged me lately. I'm playing Sarasarasasara which has lucid dream sequences that characters are aware they're in a dream, but in the dream world there are no other people present. However I just played a scene from a dream sequence which made a big deal about the fact there were no other people around, but the background image they chose of the city showed the usual number of random people walking the streets... meh.
