I think they are introductions to supportive characters you already know so it might not matter that much, when i found out the LN's a went further into the story i put the anime on hold and started the LN's one volume ahead of the arc i last watched on the anime and luckily that arc is where the story began to be less filler-like. 

someone i know has zero interest in anime, but he did watch Afro Samurai for some reason
