Visual Novel Multiplayer—Game Night

(lol, it's a secret hope of mine that someday we'll all hear each others' voices) Text chat is very... VNish. Very fitting.

I still think this idea would be a blast.

perhaps its time to put together a topic explaining the TS I mentioned in my intro thread xD

We mostly only chat in no-voice channels but voice is possible if needed xD

I wanted to wait and ask aaeru about permission or something but nobody knows where she is :o (except Tay, he knows everything)

As far as the original idea of Twitch.tv goes, we actually have an official fuwanovel user account! We've talked and talked about making this happen, but if anybody's seriously interested I think we should speak up and make it happen : ). (I'm in, for one.) Besides voicing interest in participating, we should have a few recommendations for the game to play, and then maybe do a poll.

So... maybe we could do it as follows? For those interested in doing this sometime in the next little while, post the following data tidbits:

#1) Are you in?

#2) Relative timezone

#3) Recommended Game

(just a suggestion, if you can think of a better way to do this please post it)

I've never used teamspek before, but that's certainly an interesting thought and worth looking at.

This is the third time this sort of thing has been mentioned. I really haven't meant to be cryptic in my comments. Honest. : )

I just had an excellent idea!

If we really get the TS going and all, we should pick a non-H VN like little busters or clannad or something well known like that and make that official fuwanovel stream with us commenting over it and making it even more fun = thus bringing people that don't even know what VN is into the scene smile.gif

don't know how we would make the audio and video synced as we would also have the stream delayed - maybe if the person has really really fast internet he could make a presentation using teamviewer and we would join that and watch the VN instantly and comment on it in real time on the TS.

We should get all VN folks to watch and bump it to high position on twitch and thus bringing more people who dont know about VNs

I might be interested in streaming, I've done a little before when I played other games but never streamed my voice x)

Back then I had 24/1 internet connection, now I have 100/10 so should be fine on that part.

My timezone is gmt +1.

Just interested in how exactly we would do it. Will we commentate and discuss the VN or just play through it, will there be any events or something like that?

I'm gonna agree with those that say we stream silly/over the top (not necessarily bad) VNs for fun so everyone can laugh about it on chat.

Streaming something popular, like Key VNs and such is really nice and all but might heavily spoil the story for eventual newcomers to the stream, due to its lengthy nature, heavy story focus etc. It's probably better to mention those visual novels in the description/bio field if the streamers are interested in reading more. Although you guys might get more viewers with well-known novels, hm..

don't mind 18+, although twitch will terminate one's account without prior notice if they deem it inappropriate, it's a fine line to walk on with cartoon imagery...

Yeah, its something we need more time to prepare, what the program would be and all.

We would need people with at least high quality headset. Studio microphone isn't necessary but definitely not a mic from walmart or Tesco xD

What would definitely bring lot of people would be some famous guests or even better actual host.

If I look at how much attention Jesse Cox's final fantasy VI stream got, if we got someone like that to host, so many people would find out about VNs xD The ff one was like 35 hour stream finishing the whole of FF6, I think during the ending parts the peek was about 15000 viewers, don't remember right, however they had really good production so even I who never played any FF game really enjoyed it.

(He made one VN video:

xD ... and he mentioned several times he plays actual VNs too on stream [well this is a VN too but more like a parody])

And its key 15th anniversary this year too so it would be perfect opportunity xD

But well it would be ultra hard to get him do it, bu he is a quite nice guy and might actually do it just for fun, we wouldn't know without asking.

I still think LB would be an excellent choice, but not have it a whole of LB, maybe only common and one route we would get into selecting completely random choices. It has all the minigames which would make it fun. Maybe even finish rin and komari before doing that (as those 2 you can repeat) to increase base stats and getting a better change of actually winning the baseball game or something.

Live bets on battles etc xD

But well all that is only in stars now, it would probably be hard to pull off but if we could do it, it would be awesome.

Yeah, I would actually feel more inclined to read some of these VNs if there's company. VN reading is a solo endeavor, but at the same time, you know how it is ;). Looking forward to getting more of this stuff organized.

And yeah, I'd be happy with Little Busters because I've never played through that one before. If anyone is up for sitting through some older games, let me know and I can get something set up (nobody cares X'D).

Little Busters sounds like a great choice to me, too. I've been trying to think about how to find an ideal time to stream -- (since we're all over the world) (so cool. Have you thought about that? We're gonna be playing a Visual Novel -- one of the solo-ist of solo-ventures, with friends all over the world) -- and all I can think of is we choose a time in one part of the world, and everybody converts it to their own using http://www.timezoneconverter.com/ .

I'm going to assume that a weekend would be best for most of us?

Yeah, weekend is pretty much the only time I can do~

Well time doesn't matter, it can be 24 hour streaming session, all the timezones will get equal treatment! xD

And still we would need many of those to finish LB xD

Lol, but doesn't that mean the host has to be up 24 hours clicking away? That's a long time for anybody to be able to spare (let alone stay awake). I suppose it's possible to switch between hosts, and maybe at each switch upload a save point for the next host/any followers to jump right in...

Could be cool?

well tbh all it would require would be a pc capable of running LB, teamviewer, TS and streaming soft with good connection (id say 10mb up should be good, 20 would be better). There wouldn't have to be a person there, he would just set password for full control and who would want would use it and control the game.

Or maybe little better remote desktop, I used to be able to "play" wow via remote desktop on 100mb lan connection.

And TBH other than the baseball minigame there is no need for fast response in VN, reading can be set on auto-mode, fighting is only clicking.

Dunno, we would have to try, if someone has for example 100mp up then its would be solved, even baseball should be good with that speed from same region. And well it might add fun trying to hit the ball in laggy game xD More so hit dorj with the ball xD

Host switch might be good because then you can have the stream on a lot more than if only one streamed.

As for using teamviewer, it might be good but you never know if something will happen like power outage at the person who are running the game, I think just giving over the save and let another start the game on his computer would be good.

But yeah I think it needs some planning if we want a good stream, after all we aren't streaming some popular games. :)

Ooh, sounds like interesting. Count me in! My timezone is gmt -8.

As for what VN to stream, I think we should start with something short first as a test run (i.e. Planetarian, Mirai no Kimi to; Rin ga Uta, Narcissu, etc.) and then move on to the longer VNs like Little Busters. Also, that way it won't overwhelm those that are completely new to VNs that happen to watch (which I doubt will happen, but you never know).

Daeyamati, that's a good point. Shorter games might be preferable in this case. I was thinking of maybe doing some different forms of streams as well. For example, I collect quite a bit of Narcissu goods, so maybe I could do a stream where I show them off while we all just talk about the game and VN in general. That kind of thing. This way, there's no need to be concerned about missing a stream and thus parts of a game. Of course, any one of us could do something like this B)!

I like all the ideas put out so far. I think regardless of where this goes, we should start with a test stream -- maybe an hour-long test run one weekend to make sure we're set up and ready to do this. Narcissu could be a good candidate. After that hour, we could switch the stream and check out InvertMouse's goods smile.gif.

The next step is to choose a streaming service and chat mechanism.

Video StreamingFuwanovel has a twitch.tv channel. We could invite contributors like InvertMouse, but host the regular sessions there. If we went with that option, we could upload the latest save game after every session so people could jump in and play along any time.

I don't know a while lot about the other services out there. I've heard there are even ways to utilize Skype...

Chatting During the StreamsI don't know a lot about this. Twitch.tv gives some chat options, but I don't think audio chat is one of them. There is always the fuwanovel IRC channel.

Is audio chat important? Any ideas?

I guess with audio chat, if there are many viewers we might end up talking over each other XD. The advantage of text is that you can just go ahead and type it without the fear of interrupting another person.

Yeah? If twitch.tv has a channel, and we do end up sorting something up, I could try and get something done :).

As for ensuring others can keep up with where the game is up to, is it possible to save a stream session and upload it? So the game will almost be presented in episodes.

  • 3 weeks later...

hoooooookay

personally I plan to do streaming of VN's myself (with other games, since I'm not too restrictive on *just* VN's, as I play a lot of other games - I think of it, that if I have enough people watching and bored enough to watch even when I switch to another game, they can have exposure to multiple genres. such as from SC2 -> VN's, or VN's to say... Speedrunning lol)

Several things:

~~~~~~~ in general streaming ~~~~~~~
- for twitch.tv, you can't do the 18+ types as those are actually considered pornography. (so find all-age versions)
~~~~~~~ about me streaming ~~~~~~~

- I can actually stream PSP versions which 99% of the time are all-ages anyways, although I can't write any programs to automate it (>_>) [uSB connection, custom firmware, remotejoylite)

- personally for me, I'm setting up my schedule once I actually get a day job ~_~ oh well

- on that note I also can stream PS2 but I don't have a modchip so w/e. but this is more personal stuff

- I personally don't want to give away what I plan to do as I haven't even started it, and need to get some other stuff settled in my life before I start doing it, so people can easily steal my ideas == which would be saddening )

~~~~~~~ for fuwa stream ~~~~~~~
- "I would like too. Would it be any VN of our choosing or would we vote on it in a group? I was thinking of doing a few VN lets plays on Youtube too."
> I would say if you want to make it a public one, have a poll on forum (and/or fb page for example), and play that.
"If there are any locals here who manage to set up a stream, yeah, I'm up for dropping by to hang out for a bit . Playing through a VN from start to finish is probably too much, though. Maybe a shorter game? If it's a VN I happen to like, I do enjoy hearing about what other people have to say about it."
> just install xsplit. easily. then again I have the paid version of it too, free version has lesser quality but oh well.
> honestly you don't need to do a VN all in one sitting either.
"Chatting During the StreamsI don't know a lot about this. Twitch.tv gives some chat options, but I don't think audio chat is one of them. There is always the fuwanovel IRC channel."
@ Twitch.tv chat channel: yes it sucks, use your rizon/whatever IRC channel if able, just point people there, maybe make an IRC bot that connects to the twitch.tv one to make people go to the correct one...
""If we really get the TS going and all, we should pick a non-H VN like little busters or clannad or something well known like that and make that official fuwanovel stream with us commenting over it and making it even more fun = thus bringing people that don't even know what VN is into the scene""
Like I said, yes, do a non-H VN. or if there's a VN with H scenes but not part of the story (e.g. say, I guess fsn? idk saa idk don't ask me, me noob with most vn's) then maybe just switch to another xsplit scene when you KNOW an H scene is coming, and note that.
"don't know how we would make the audio and video synced as we would also have the stream delayed - maybe if the person has really really fast internet he could make a presentation using teamviewer and we would join that and watch the VN instantly and comment on it in real time on the TS."
Skype, turn on connection from xsplit to skype, make it your cam, show the stream that, iirc at least
"ell tbh all it would require would be a pc capable of running LB, teamviewer, TS and streaming soft with good connection (id say 10mb up should be good, 20 would be better). Or maybe little better remote desktop, I used to be able to "play" wow via remote desktop on 100mb lan connection."
while true, LB/vn's in particular don't exactly use too much memory, teamviewer/ts/skype don't exactly need too much, and then the stream, if you don't care about having 1080p with stupid amount of bitrate... lol no you don't need 10mb up
I have 4mb up and I only use 1mb when I stream sc2 for example (and sometimes with skype/etc), mirc, foobar2k, and random other programs at the same time.... so not really
as for the 2nd thing, the remote viewer, in that case, if it becomes big enough then either make a bot or something to auto press on options (autoit mouseclick or something) depending on viewer choice/poll (.poll start 3, 1/2/3 choice from irc members, end poll, bot automatically does it) assuming vn's don't really change where to click (which is usually consistant throughout the thing)... although that's a pain to program.
on another note you could just yes, make someone do remote desktop, which could work (but who would host it/etc)
"short vs long"
hmm
either ok, probably short if you want to keep it in one sitting, but it could be longer honestly, just use the save button
twitch.tv also saves the videos (for X days, forgot, probably like a month or more...) and then gets auto deleted, and you can export it to youtube.
also xsplit saves the videos on your computer, so you can reencode it from flv to mp4 and then upload it to another service (or clean it up and then upload to youtube)
"Video StreamingFuwanovel has a twitch.tv channel. We could invite contributors like InvertMouse, but host the regular sessions there. If we went with that option, we could upload the latest save game after every session so people could jump in and play along any time."
save file?
```````````````````````````````````

personally for a fuwa stream, I think a good idea would be to have like maybe 1-2 polls, one poll for which vn (winning vn gets taken off for awhile), and another poll for when to go live (and I can't do it at most times as I actually need to do work.. ``)

and then once you start streaming it, take input from the viewers (and other listeners on skype for example?) to decide which option to select (maybe commentary would be good too, but I don't know what you can talk about so /yawn)

*(xsplit or obs project which is ok, and free, fmle which sucks really bad, and ffsplit dunno)

ook firstly try using quote tag xD this was really hard to read to know where the quote ends and your reply begins tongue.gif but managed to read anyway xD

anyway... I didn't think about this being some constant show or whatever so it doesn't need to be that complex to have autoit clikers etc, I was maybe thinking key 15th anniversary or something like that.

Therefore having all the hosts connected through teamviewer (to see it instantly to be able to comment without delay) and then stream 1080p zone including the game, chat, cams possibly would really use lot of UP. And also lot of cpu xD

xsplit is not a problem, there is cracked premium version with all the functions, nobody will know the difference smile.gif

and as mentioned, the remote viewer is not for the controls, anyone can do that. Its more so the hosts have synced image and can produce synced audio.

Anyway I think how we could attract lot of people would be by playing VNs like Paca Plus, Hatoful boyfriend etc and just randomly having fun over it xD But then it would lose the point of key anniversary stream

.

Alternatively we can just make it some big podcast, not actually play any VN and mostly only discuss lot of the key ones.

However there we would meet a difficulty having to talk about something and not spoiling anything at the same time xD

It could possibly be a MAD session from key products, there is lot of them xD

well hard to say what is best.

MM

well it depends the purpose of the stream really

and you could technically do multiple things, depending on how important this is rofl

like you can have it that one part of the stream (on certain days) is to get people attacted to VN's (like the purpose of fuwanovel?)

and then one for key anniversary

and in general either a talk show (see: SotG (SC2 talk show), ITG (SC2), state of the league (LoL talk show)) as well. [oh. minus the freaking drama] once a week... etc (which then you can also reference the site, and give people up to date news about new translations or VN's out there?)

or you can just play the game and let viewers decide which option to pick

etc

depends really rofl ;D

nice that google doc :) However doesn't take in consideration teamviewer and xsplit running at the same time, thats 100% cpu usage on my lynnfield i5 overclocked to 3.3 xD

xsplit has really bad encoder tbh, I think friends were able to get much better results with ffsplit where you can use mkv encoder which is much better for saving cpu xD

anyway I might as well scrap the idea altogether, VNs are too niche and there are imo better ways to attract people to play them, stream on the first sight seemed like a good idea but after some consideration I pretty much gave up on that idea and moved on xD

you just reminded the topic with your intro xD
