  1. Hey everyone! Just thought I'd introduce myself, even though I've been lurking for a few months now. Favorite VN's: Muv-Luv Alt, Kara No Shoujo, Katawa Shoujo, Little Busters. I've been playing/reading VN's for a few years now and I wanted to get a little more involved. Earlier this year, I was talking to a friend of mine and we randomly discussed creating our own VN. We tossed the idea around a few times over and decided to actually give it a shot. If we lost interest in it, no big deal right? I have been in charge of the plot, character development, story writing, and coding. I had never done any of those things before, so I've had to educate myself quite a lot lately. I will also be looking for an artist(s) for the character sprites soon. I lost my job a few months back due to COVID (but I start my new job in a few days!), so once I get financially stable again I'll be happy to pay for someone else's talents. I am planning on making the VN free for everyone though. I simply just wanted to have the experience of creating my own project from scratch. I'm about 120k words in atm, and I'd be a fool to guess....buuuut I'd say I'm maybe 70% finished. Anyway, I'll be lurking some more and eventually post a few things here and there. Thanks! -Joe

  2. Hey, everyone! We're starting the new year by finishing off the Redemption storyline from last month. I'm really pleased with how it turned out, I think it's another strong story, and I hope many of you will agree! But I'm happy to now be moving on to other things that may be a little more fun generally~ Besides that, there's another trio of excellent CGs to brighten things up, including a first one for the Villainous Sleeper Agent storyline that was long overdue. Penlight's really got a lot of CGs going for it now, huh? And I've got no intention of stopping anytime soon... As ever, you can find this month's release in PC, Linux, Mac and Android versions, on my Patreon or itch.io pages. I've also linked the most recent flowchart guide on the public news post on Patreon. Anyway, that's about it for this update! Next month's release is going to be a bit of a mixed bag with no clear writing focus, while I have a feeling some of the art additions I have upcoming are going to be very well-received! Enjoy the new release and I'll be back soon enough~ What's New Redemption storyline fully scripted to a conclusion along one path New CG for Sayori's Doll storyline, just before the epilogue New CG for the Villianous Sleeper Agent story path New CG for Hiroko's original storyline, near the end The dialogue for the Villainous Sleeper Agent scene where the CG appears has been revised slightly Word count is now around 256,000 Spanish localisation: Various edits and corrections to the existing script Minor typo corrections Known Issues Changing the language on a line where an animation occurs (like screen shake) will throw up an error.

  3. I managed to get rlbabel working by messing around with the addresses in the .map using a hex editor, using the genmap output as a guide as well as some guesswork (I guess the output has a bunch of other "possible alternative" addresses, but screwed them up on my reallive or something?) But yeah, getting any of this stuff working has definitely been an extraordinary hassle Maybe a futile hope, but still, hopefully the worst part of the technical hurdle is over. I'll keep that in mind in case I get severely reallive'd again Definitely past the prime of modding reallive VNs, but in case someone has this same issue ever, here's a guide of what I had to do. The version of genmap I still could find a link to has been modified somehow, and spits out map files that think they're a different version, which seems to have caused some issues. I'll get back to this later. Anyway, I didn't even get genmap to work properly unless it was in Windows XP. It might sometimes work on Windows 7 and on older versions like 2000, and I didn't test on Vista, but let's be real, you're going to want a Windows XP VM to do this. Once you run it with your VN's reallive.exe, you will get a .map file and a report file called genmap_output.txt. Here's what the .map file looks like if you open it with a hex editor (such as HxD): I got to see which addresses were meant for what by peeping at what source code I could find, in autoconfig.cpp. But now, you don't have to! You can change the view to only show one address per row in HxD by going to View->Bytes per Row and setting it to 4. Now, if you take a look at genmap_output.txt, you may be confused to notice that there are several addresses for some of the items. Keep in mind that the addresses are stored "backwards" for some technical reason that I've long forgotten. So while the first Current Scenario address is 00 7C FD C0, it's stored as C0 FD 7C 00 (the value of each byte is preserved, but the order of them is in reverse). Unfortunately, it only stuffs the first ones of them into the map file, but after messing around with replacing some of these with the alternate values as well as some trial and error, I managed to get English text to display properly. My VN (Snow) wouldn't even launch if the map version is set to 1... so that's fun. But I had to mess with the other values enough so that the text would actually display properly without crashing or any strange issues as well. These are the only values I needed to modify to get rlbabel working for me, so hopefully it will be the same for you. I also ended up chopping off all the excess values below offset 54 so that the filesize would match those of the .map files that come with rldev, but it's probably unnecessary. I can't guarantee to be of much more assistance than this, but if you're still struggling with things and have no clue what to do, feel free to reach out on Discord: Mhmd_FVC#8760

  5. Hello again! This is another monthly update I'm really proud of. First things first, I've gotten one path through the Doll storyline completely written up to a conclusion! I'm mostly really happy with how this one came out, and I'm sure it'll become a few reader's favourites~ There's "only" three new CGs with this release, but they're all spectacular, and you'll deffo want to revisit the Devotion, Reversal and Hiroko's first storylines to see them! And finally, I also developed an entirely new story path almost entirely from scratch! The Redemption storyline, where Kyou initially starts on the path of villainy (the Devotion path to be exact) only to turn away from it and try to right that wrong, is now available in this release. It's... definitely not what people would expect to find in these kinds of games, but it's a very Penlight kind of story and it's the kind I've wanted to tell for ages. I hope folks will enjoy what's currently written and look forward to a concluding part after Christmas Once again, you can find this month's release in PC, Linux, Mac and Android versions, on my Patreon or itch.io pages. I've also linked the most recent flowchart guide on the public news post on Patreon. Happy holidays, everyone! I'll be back in the new year with another fun update~ What's New Sayori's Doll storyline is now scripted and playable up to a conclusion! New story path "Redemption" scripted to the end of the eighth day, and outlined to a conclusion New CG for Villainous Devotion storyline New CG for Nozomi's Reversal storyline, near the end of the currently-written script New CG for Hiroko's original storyline, near the end Akiko's sprite has been upgraded, featuring a new pose, casual outfit and some new facial expressions Word count is now around 252,000 Spanish localisation: Various edits and corrections to the existing script Known Issues Changing the language on a line where an animation occurs (like screen shake) will throw up an error.
