Parallel Pain
I just submitted mine yesterday. Anyone else?
OriginalRen
Normally I would apply to this program, but the pay for the cost of living I need with student loans doesn't allow me to take part in this. From what I hear of ALT programs though, there are some flaws with it and it's pretty competitive since almost every person applies to it. If you do get in, I recommend looking into a TEFL course if you haven't already gotten certified. Use this experience to look for actual teaching jobs, but keep in mind the interviews are pretty rough. I did 2 already. Anyways, best of luck! Parallel Pain
Thanks for the advice. I applied for CIR because I'd rather not teach, but if I get put into a teaching position instead I'll look into it. Also why does cost of living and student loans come into this? I mean you'll be paid for your work no?
OriginalRen
As an English teacher in Japan, here are some of the fees I need to prepare for: 1. Rent: 64,800 - 67,800 yen (utilities included)2. Taxes: 5,000 yen (income tax: 0.05 - 0.2 % of monthly salary)3. Employment Insurance: 1,000 yen (deducted from salary; 0.5% of monthly salary)4. National Health Insurance: 6,000 yen (This is an average per month)5. Internet: 2,000 - 5,000 yen6. Phone: 6,000 - 10,000 yen (depends on the type of phone and plan)7. Food: 40,000 yen (for a single person who cooks and goes out for dinner) Total = 124,800 - 134,800 yen/month In addition, I need about $400 put aside each month for student loans after graduating college, making my grand total somewhere around 170,000 yen/month. Just a thought.
Aceinthehole
I might be coming off as an idiot, but what is the JET program?

Parallel Pain
Thanks! @OriginalRen I don't know about your student loan, but I'm pretty sure the programme would pay enough for you to live in Japan.
OriginalRen
I looked into it, and the pay is actually less than the job I applied to. But thanks anyways!
Zakamutt
40,000 yen (for a single person who cooks and goes out for dinner) Obligatory note that my mum would probably recommend cooking dinner too id probably be more lazy myself

Yeah Way
Definitely planning on doing so as soon as I graduate. For now, it's just a dream of mine. :/ Do you intend to use it to get a full-time job over there or just as a job for a year or two?

For now, it's just a dream of mine. :/ Do you intend to use it to get a full-time job over there or just as a job for a year or two? Currently just a year. I don't know if I actually want to live in Japan all my life. The actual Japanese culture and what we see in fiction is different after all. Zalor
Necroposting Interview confirmed for February second. I know I should be delighted to advance but...time to start questioning my oral Japanese abilities and other skills I wish the best of luck to you. I want to do the JET program eventually myself, but I'm currently too young. Still have to earn a Bachelor's degree.
