The LN gathered too much attention from the public (more than your typical harem LN) and the author was too pressured to make a legitimate Kirino ending so he chickened out of it. Can't really blame him much I guess, no one wants society looking down on them. Nisekoi is different since there's no complicated family situations, it's just a generic harem romcom.
