VNDB changed its rating system

Basically, the idea behind this change is to make newer VNs more represented in the rating. I'm not sure how I feel about this, honestly. On the one hand, it makes it easier to find some less known but interesting VNs. I noticed that a lot of VNs that suddenly appeared in the top-25 were already on my wishlist. On the other hand, I feel like the troll voters will downvote these less popular VNs into oblivion, and in the end, it will make ratings even less useful than they used to be.

I was watching this new rating system develop over the last days and I think we have to pay attention to it for at least one more week before making a verdict that it is actually better or worse. I do have to say that all the titles in there are actually talked about the most in their respective niches. F/SN leaving the top10 for Tsukihime is wild though.

It's a remake that came out recently, so it's understandable that most people who played it are already Type-Moon fans. I'd say, the rating is likely to fall in a few years.

And, honestly, Fate is classic, but it has quite a few flaws, and the translation is terrible.

I agree, but it makes it easier to find these niches. I guess, when I just started reading VNs, I mostly played either highly rated VNs, or the ones that had interesting reviews. I guess, this change would make my experience back then quite different.

I think the fact that this and this are now ranked higher than the Grisaia trilogy, G-senjou no Maou, Majikoi, Aokana and a ton of other great VNs says a lot.
Let's just hope the system will improve over time. At the very least, I think there should be some rule about the minimum number of votes to hit the high rankings, just to prevent single digit vote VNs from reaching the top.

The ratings for the first one are clearly rigged. It's definitely a bad sign that the ratings are affected so much by crap like that.

Whoa, I checked it, and G-Senjou is not even in the top 100 anymore. I don't even like it that much, but it's pretty wild after it was #17 some years ago.

And what is really insane is Saya no Uta being #301. Just what?

Yeah, at this point I'm not sure that niche exposure is worth it. Vndb ratings used to be at least somewhat usable compared to most other websites exactly because they didn't show all the garbage with a small number of votes. You could still find all the niche stuff using tags.

I can see that the two VNs with few votes I mentioned have now moved down the list quite a bit (currently rank 324 and 294) compared to when I wrote my last post. Dunno if that's because of adjustments to the system or if it's just an example of it working its magic. In any case, I'm interested in seeing what the rankings will be like a month or year from now.

Most likely, adjustments. I noticed that the first VN has a lot of 10s and 9s from users who only voted once, and it hasn't changed. And the parameters of the system aren't supposed to depend on time.

Now that it's been almost a year since the implementation, I think at least it's somehow manage to worked to a degree. Although, it also help the initial sorting is also based on the number of votes which is the closest one to the old Bayesian system. That said, while it's still uncanny with some unfitting title enter top 100, at least the staffs tried to curb the situation by placing the threshold at 100 votes for the top 50 list and weighted the score for the title less than 100 votes.

PS - I would say that the threshold should be higher to filter more thoroughly, as in between 150 to 200 votes, but it's good enough for now.
