Hi Eldin. I look forward to talking about semi-obscure anime titles with you :-) At least, if it's 80's or newer. I started watching older and older anime out of curiosity, first 80's and then 70's, but kind of hit a roadblock in the 70's. The oldest show I've watched where I like the artwork is Future Boy Conan; so far everything I've tried that was made before that, I had to give up because the art was really not good enough. Well out of all the things on Ryoji's list, the only one I've seen is Dragon Century. It's pretty decent, I like how the art style is different from the way it is now, but still definitely recognizable as anime. I have it on VHS, it came from a used record store near me. They still have laser discs for sale in that store (the big ones that are the same size as a vinyl record).

Sure, why wouldn't it be painful? If it's that kind of game...where each girl is in love with you, then of course when you ultimately choose one girl over the other, the other one's heart will be broken. So why is it weird? Because it's a game? If you don't react emotionally to the game you're playing, the suspension of disbelief has failed, and what good is it at that point...

Yeah, I hate that sound too. Though sometimes I just turn the sound off temporarily instead of skipping text Yes! Ever 17 was also the only game I ever remember skipping (non-H) text on! It's been years, you understand...but seems like there was some hologram girl or something(?), trying to lecture me on the meaning of life, the universe, and everything, Blah blah blah she went on, until I started skipping it. ...And I eventually dropped it anyway to play Kanon. (Yet, Ever 17 was far from the worst VN I ever played. That honor belongs to another game published by Hirameki. But that is another story...)

I don't really know any VN players, or for that matter, any major anime fans, in my hometown. But I know a few people in surrounding towns. Through cons mainly. And speaking of cons, at least a couple of people live in NC, I see. I suppose y'all go to Animazement? I've been once; I usually go to Anime Weekend Atlanta though.

Does the document you want to work from preserve the order of the scripts in the game's data files? Or is it more of a document written by someone while they're going through playing the game? Seems like they don't necessarily match. If the VN has a branching plot, it seems like some extra work might be needed to place each line of the translated text exactly where it's supposed to go in the files.

I stopped D.C.P.C. for a while and switched to Brighter than Dawning Blue. Whose route I will try for this 2nd time, I haven't decided yet. There sure is some fine cuisine in this one... more appetizing than Flyable Heart, even. I might be biased toward Italian food, though... Well, seems like no one on here is waiting for this translation, but there is one coming in the not too distant future.

Sounds like a very good start. Any readings yet, or just meanings? Oh, I don't know...it's not any harder than 3D vector integral calculus... Okay, the grammar IS hard. But, you can learn short, simple sentences first. What are you using as a guide? Is it Tae Kim's? I don't have it installed or anything...if you really want, then could we see the Japanese text? Don't forget, you could always try ignoring the narrative and focus on just the dialogue, that would make it easier to understand, maybe.

Okay, well here's some other games that maybe you can try besides Flyable Heart: Nursery Rhyme Kanon Memories Off Brighter than Dawning Blue (Personally, seems like I didn't really find Flyable Heart any easier or harder than these)...

Sorry, I don't use annot player right now, so I don't know what all it supports...but from what I've heard, the vast majority of visual novels are supported... But when you say "learn the meaning of words written entirely in kana with no kanji". So you're basically talking about vocabulary, right? Because kanji is not the same as vocabulary (maybe it is in Chinese). Given the set of all existing Japanese words, the ways of writing them are numerous and vary with each particular word: -almost always written in kanji -almost always written in kana -almost always written in kanji+kana -sometimes kanji, sometimes kana -sometimes kanji+kana, sometimes kana only etc. etc. Regardless of how it's written, you still have to know what each word means. Knowing the meaning of kanji is helpful, but that's all it is--helpful. Not guaranteed results. Sometimes it works great. Sometimes you can see a multi-kanji word, and if you know the meaning of each kanji, then you can guess the meaning of the word even though you've never seen it before. BUT...sadly, the reason why certain other words are written with certain kanji have been lost throughout the centuries... About は, see Down's response. Basically the same symbol は is used to write both the sound "ha" in normal words and the sound "wa" of the particle which is the topic marker. Also the same symbol へ is used to write both the sound "he" in normal words and the sound "e" of the particle which is the directional marker. But when you are learning hirgana for the first time, just think of "ha" and "he".

Sorry, I didn't come across a grammatically complete sentence that only use kanji. Phrases, yes (noun phrases). But it's easy to find sentences that only use kana. Ready to learn kana now? :-) Yes, I'm still learning kanji--slowly. Not a Kanji warrior. Just trying to get 1000 most common kanji with their standard on readings and kun readings fully memorized. I have a normal day job, so I'm usually around evenings and weekends

Beethoven's is a completely different piece, but it's awesome. Requires you to jump long distances across the keyboard with octaves...and hopefully land on the right notes :-) One synthesizer is a keyboard, the other is just a module. Both have MIDI ports In, Out, and Thru. I just got a MIDI-to-USB cable today. It just has one MIDI In and one MIDI out. But, MIDI Thru on one synthesizer can be connected to MIDI In on another (daisy-chain). Next, I have to learn to use a MIDI sequencer... To sail the stormy seas of kanji, I bought a Canon pocket electronic dictionary for manga. For VNs, I use AGTH+Translation Aggregator but without the translation, just setting it to JParser which is the EDICT mouse-over mode. For websites, I use another EDICT mouse-over dictionary called Rikai-chan.

Heh... yeah, I've messed around with playing some VN music on the piano...like Air and Kanon. But I'm also a big classical music fan. Since you mentioned Fur Elise, I figure the Turkish March you played was Beethoven's? I really like that one, though the one I learned was Mozart's, and that one's good too. But I don't play much classical anymore, it takes a lot of work to learn, and I realized I just don't have the personality type to perform on stage, no amount of practice can overcome that. I still listen to it a lot though on Youtube. Btw, last fall I bought a couple of synthesizers off Ebay. Now, I want to learn how to control these from a PC. Because with MIDI you can record each instrument separately, and have them all play back together. Should make for some interesting covers/remixes maybe even some original songs, if I ever make it that far... Japanese was HARD, that's true enough, because I'm no genius, just an average guy. I wouldn't have even tried except for 3 things: -Watching subtitled anime lo these many years made it seem less "foreign" -It wasn't the first foreign language I learned -Computerized lookup made it possible to read decently without knowing all kanji (so the "reward" came earlier)

Yeah, it definitely will have problems reading its own script files if not in Japanese mode. I made a big post on my own blog about this... Maybe in fuwanovel's entry, the little note "Requires non-unicode set to Japanese: Yes " should be in a font about 10 times bigger...in flashing text.
