  1. Niizuma Koyomi is one of a very, very few nukige I consider worthy of watching for the quality of the romance/story.  While there is a lot of sex in the game, it also is a really high quality romance SOL game with solid heroines.

Hikari no Umi no Apeiria is a seriously weird game... it doesn't fit into any greater genre except maybe the mystery/mindfuck sub-genre.  It is also full of absurdities.  However, if you can enjoy its inherent absurdities, this is a fun VN to read.

Fuyu Uso is the conclusion of the Uso series, focusing on the most mysterious and inscrutable of the four heroines.  Like all the entries in the four game series, it is a high-quality kinetic novel with a mix of fantasy, plotge, and charage elements.

Hatsujou Sprinkle is a medium-quality charage by Whirlpool that is only interesting if you have finished everything better, lol.

Mashimaro is just a standard-quality charage, nothing to write home about.

Sakura no Mori Dreamers 2 is a great fandisc for people who liked the original game, and it also links up a bit with Honoguraki.

Shin Koihime Musou Kakumei Souten no Haou covers Karen's/Cao Cao's rewritten path.  Very little of this game was left untouched by the hands of the writers, so it is a huge enhancement of the original path from Shin Koihime Musou.

  2. Haruru Minamo ni is a high quality charage with an actual central story.  Like all Clochette games, the fetishes tend to lean toward boobs, but I'm sure you are all fine with that, lol.

Hataraku Otaku is the second game in Akabei's Hataraku series.  Like the first Hataraku Otona, it is a somewhat sex-heavy romance story between adults.

Kamiyaba is one of the Yabai series by Hulotte.   For some reason, my rating for this one got deleted from vndb, but like all the games in this series, it is moderately amusing harem antics.

Otomelo is yet another failure by Ensemble to regain their extremely brief golden days that fails  miserably.  At best the game can be described as adequate.

Suisei Ginka no Istoria is a game I dropped because I didn't like the way they went for shock value so often so early in the game.  However, it is immensely popular with its fans, so if you like this kind of thing, you should probably take a look.

  3. On 3/10/2019 at 1:41 PM, Riku said:

Hmm, finished the original VN today and started the FD, but, is it me or the voices were recorded differently? Or it's a problem on my side?

I know this is from a while ago, but yeah, Sylvie, Elle's, and Ayaka's VAs are all somewhat off.  Ria, Reina and Akane are about the same, but playing them one after the other, it is pretty obvious that the voice director screwed up.

  4. Silverio Trinity is my favorite of the three Silverio games.  While I love Zephyr and Ragna, I would say that Ashley is the protagonist who makes the best overall presentation of the three protagonists.  In addition, the three antagonists of Trinity: Gilbert, Dainsleif and Helios, are just better as antagonists than the ones of the other two.  Ragnarok's antagonists are just too out there and Valzeride, while he is great in himself, has a few plot holes in his characterization that make me wince in retrospect.

    Ninki Seiyuu:

    Lovely Day:

    Hoshi Koi Twinkle:

  5. Yomegami...ok, this is a game typical of Alcot's main company, a fantasy comedy with a strong H element (generally speaking, Alcot's main team tends toward really sexy ecchi and H).  It has a good protagonist, excellent heroines, and a strong enough story to almost stand up to a plotge.

Sankaku Ren'ai is a charage, obviously.  I will note that it is a solid charage that might have been VN of the Month material in a slow month.  It is not a game I found memorable, but it also doesn't bring back any bad memories, which was something that started to become common about this time.

Aki Uso's description above is flat-out wrong.  All of the Uso series games are based in the same timeline, but the romantic portions diverge.  The order of the games is the chronological order in which the protagonist might have potentially formed relations with them.  Like all the Uso series games, it is of excellent quality but only stands up if you are familiar with the previous games.

Natsuiro Koi Uta is a middle ground game for Studio Ryokucha, a company that isn't very prolific but generally produces high-quality games when they do put them out.  It doesn't get anywhere near their top titles, but it isn't the worst title they've ever put out, either.  It is a bit too SOL-centric for fanboys of the company (in other words, its base plot isn't good enough for the fanboys), but if you wanted a charage with a strong setting and plot, this would be a decent choice.

Karenai Sekai to Owaru Hana... I've posted on this game twice, but I'll go ahead and give you a few high points.  Karenai Sekai falls in the zone between an utsuge and a nakige.  To be blunt, too many bad things happen to characters in this story for it to completely fall within the nakige genre, but the endings are happy ones, disqualifying it from being considered an utsuge.  This game has huge emotional impact, enough catharsis for anyone trying to blow off some emotional steam, and an excellent set of characters that are worthy of caring about from beginning to end.

  6. The second half of the Utawarerumono 2 duology is an excellent strategy/vn with great characters and great story.

Sen no Hatou is yet another game by August with spectacular production values ruined by bad choices in how to handle the scenario.

Tayutama 2 is a decent sequel to the original, but it suffers from poor pacing and definitely needed more extensive heroine paths.

Natsu no Majo no Parade is a good fantasy charage with a decent cast of characters and just enough comedy to keep you reading.

  7. Baldr Heart was the last truly good Baldr game.  It is based centuries after Baldr Sky, in a world that has slowly rotted on the vine due to excessive technological development.

I played through two paths of Gin'iro Haruka, but that was my limit.   It wasn't because the game was bad, but rather because it was just too long for an SOL romance.

Ichibun no ni Koigokoro is a kusoge.

Inochi no Spare is a 'soft' utsuge that I enjoyed a great deal at the time.  It has a solid protagonist with a somewhat shakier heroine, and I recommend it for people who thrive on catharsis.

  8. Amatsutsumi is a great game, despite utilizing that awful ladder-style path structure.  Purple Soft reached its last peak (for now) with Aoi Tori, but Amatsutsumi is a game of excellent quality.  I recommend it for anyone who wants a good mix of SOL, plot, and catharsis.

Floral Flowlove is one of my favorite Saga Planets games.  It is a game with just enough fantasy to scratch my itch, a top-tier protagonist, and a great concept.  Definitely a game to recommend to fans of the company's earlier works.

Kimi to Yumemishi is a kusoge.  It is the worst kind of kusoge, designed by a company that creates 'meh' quality games that try to mimic the success and styles of other company's works without the heart of those same works.

Senren Banka was the last good Yuzusoft game.  It is in English, so the EVN fanboys are probably familiar with it already.

Aristear Remain is a game that joins a lot of Astronauts games in being 'not quite good enough'.  It is fantasy, it is action, but it never quite stops feeling empty.

  9. Natsuiro Kokoro Log is yet another low-quality charage not worth mentioning except to diss it.

Tarareba is a halfway decent charage by Aries, a company that generally doesn't produce high-quality games in the first place.

By now, a lot of you already no Sakura no Mori Dreamers.  However, I'll note that this was one of several horror mystery series that came out in this and the next year that were halfway decent.  If you liked Sakura no Mori, I suggest playing Butterfly Seeker.

Soshite Hatsukoi ga Imouto ni Naru... is a top class nakige that somehow - yet again - came out of a low-budget subsidiary of Alcot.  This game, like most of Alcot Honey Comb's games, is pretty reliant on the writer quality in comparison to most modern VNs, which tend to be reliant on visual quality to pass themselves off as being worth the money.  This game made me cry at least a half-dozen times each time I played it, because it was just that good.

  10. Island is the worst game Front Wing has ever made, including its nukige.

Wizards Complex is a low-mediocre charage.

Natsu Uso is the second game in the Uso series, and it is essentially Aoi's path.  Like all four games in the Uso series, it has a decent story, good romance, and is entirely a kinetic novel.

Dal Segno is a medium quality moege based in the Da Capo universe.  Honestly, if you don't like the DC series, don't bother playing this.

  11. Akeiro is one of my all-time favorites.  While I called another game the VN of the Year for this particular year, in retrospect, this game was probably the best choice.  Since it first came out, I've played it at least once a year, without any regrets or moments where I lost interest.

Koi no Essence was a truly trash VN.  I don't know why Ensemble decided to screw up so badly in the execution of the heroine paths, but they did.

Shoujo-tachi wa Kouya o Mezasu... tbh, I have mixed feelings.  I hate VNs and anime that cover the entertainment industry.  However, this game was moderately amusing, with a lot of oblique references to rl VN staff drama and personalities mixed in.

Toki o Tsumugu Yakusoku is a high-quality charage with a solid cast of characters.  While some people I've talked to have disliked this game for various reasons, it is one I still go back to on occasion.

  12. Wagamama High Spec is a mediocre charage that is still given good ratings by some for some reason.

    Ditto for Amaekata.

Bara no Seibo is an excellent sequel to the original Shugotate.  It is somewhat darker than the original and reveals a lot about the protagonist's past that was sort of glossed over in the original.

Noraneko Heart... to be honest, this game is one I have mixed feelings about.  I found the narration in this game off-putting, but it is pretty popular here in the West, to my surprise.

Tsumi no Hikari was the last Minori game I played.  After this one, I just couldn't bring myself to endure Minori's style anymore.  However, like most Minori games, it is a high quality story, if somewhat overly dramatic for what boils down to teen romance.

World Election was Whirlpool's last truly great game.  It has one of their best protagonists, an excellent and amusing cast of characters, a good story, and just enough hilarity to keep you watching.   The epilogues for the main heroines are all pretty good, and there are a lot of sub-heroines with short paths to enjoy.

  13. Tokyo Necro is Nitroplus's best game since Muramasa.  Excellent action, excellent story, and an interesting setting (despite the fact that I normally hate zombies).

Hataraku Otona is interesting for different reasons.  The most obvious is that the protagonist is an adult and a lot of the early story is him just getting his act together and beginning to seriously search for love.  The other part is... no high school.  Yay!  lol  Anyway, the paths in this game are surprisingly high quality, so if you want adult SOL romance, this is a great choice.

  14. Haru Uso is the first game in the Uso series by Campus, a subsidiary of Light.  This series is actually fairly high quality, but I recommend that it be played all at once, as it is otherwise just a bit frustrating.

Hatsuru koto Naki Mirai Yori is probably Front Wing's best non-Grisaia game by far.  It has an excellent story, great characters, and a great setting.  The only downside is that it is profoundly uncomfortable to consider a zombie loli to be a heroine.

I rated Kodomo no Asobi fairly highly, but that was because it was a quality game, despite me finding it a bit outside my tastes.

Koi Suru Kimochi no Kasanekata is one of the few VNs Ensemble has made since its decline that didn't fall apart entirely during the heroine routes.

Koko Kara Natsu no Innocence... let's be clear, Clochette doesn't make bad games.  Even their worst games are about two stages better than the best the average charage company can do.  However, their aesthetic (hint: oppai) often puts people off.  One of the better games by the company with an interesting concept.

Yome Sagashi is an excellent harem-ge.  I re-reviewed it recently on my blog if you want a fuller opinion.

Maggot Baits needs to be mentioned, if only because of its potential.  If it were possible to excise every last H-scene in this game and censor the torture scenes, it would be a first-class chuunige.  Kurashiki really went all out on the writing in this game.  Unfortunately, the numerous torture and torture-sex scenes ruin everything.

  15. Kenseiki Alpha Ride is an example of a game that would have been so much better... if 1) there had only been one protagonist, 2) the gameplay was more well-balanced, and 3) Said protagonist wasn't a whiney little bitch.

I gave Sakura no Uta a relatively high rating, but most of my positive comments on it exclude the true path.  I say this because, while Sca-ji constantly annoyed me throughout the game, it was only on the true path that he managed to send me over the edge into rage.

Kyuuketsuki no Libra... it should be noted that this is a watered down Draculius with a much weaker protagonist, less interesting humor, and an unnatural obsession with loli+urination.  I liked the game, but it was so obvious that they were trying to create a spiritual successor to Draculius that it ended up falling short in every respect.

Primal Hearts 2... is basically the same as the first game.  It is a great charage with hot H and decent humor, but you won't find any deep insights or truly interesting plot elements to it.

Unlucky is an isekai SOL charage.  While it is a fantasy world, it is a fantasy world that has tech at around the same level as the 1980's modern world, though lacking in some areas.  Decent story and characters, and it is definitely worth playing for people interested in any of the genres.  However, it isn't so exceptional that you should play it even if you don't have an interest in the genres involved.

  16. Psychologic Love Comedy is... nothing like the title indicates.  It should be called Psychopathic Love Comedy.  I actually rated this VN fairly high later on, and I really should have played it at the time.  Still, it is a doujin game, and as a result, its visual effects suffer somewhat.

Boku wa Tomodachi is the second doujin game from this month I played... and it is extremely unusual.  I gave it a low rating because the sheer stress of self-inserting into the protagonist is unbelievable.  Essentially, the protagonist is the 'best friend' of a bunch of harem protagonists, cursed to always be on the outside and despised by the heroines.  He also has to watch as the heroines - whom he generally is fond of - lose everything when they aren't 'chosen'.

Traveling Stars starts out pretty good, with a large cast of non-humans and a really unusual protagonist... unfortunately, it is just too sugary.  It needed  more spice to be VN of the Month material.

Tou no Shita no Exercitus is a decent dungeon-crawler VN.  Honestly, the story is interesting enough to make the game worth reading to the end, though the gameplay isn't exceptional.

Tenkiame is kitsune nukige.  An excellent kitsune nukige with enough non-H content to make you like the characters.  Does anything else need to be said, my fellow fetishists?

On the surface, Koi to Mahou to Kanrinin should have been a good charage... unfortunately, it stumbles repeatedly in execution.

  17. Himitsu no Otome is a failure of a trap protagonist game, so I won't bother saying much about it.

Neyuki no Gen'ei is a horror game that has some similarities to Clock Up's style.

Maboroshi no Dystopia is a game that channels Kinugasa Shougo in that the endings are inconclusive but fails to create as powerful a setting or characterization as that particular writer is capable of.  As such, the game feels a lot like a pale imitation of Akagoei.

Love Rec is a high-quality charage with a solid cast of heroines.  It's one of my few unreserved charage recommendations.

  18. Hyakugojuunenme no Mahoutsukai is just a worthless kusoge.

Ayakashi Contract is one of AXL's better SOL plotge, but it is really only suitable for people who already like AXL.

Chuunibyou na Kanojo is a mildly funny charage that doesn't really do anything special despite having an obvious theme.

Koitama is a decent game that is half-charage, half-plotge.  It's major flaw is that no backstory is ever really given for the main characters.

Love, Vampire flowers is a plotge/charage hybrid focused on a centuries-old vampire (who became a vampire in order to overcome hunger and then ended up getting sealed away) who has just entered into a period of a vampire's life cycle where he searches for a potential eternal mate.  It is a good VN overall, but it definitely has its flaws, not the least of which that the protagonist is the opposite of what you'd expect of a vampire in most ways.

Natsuiro Recipe is on my 'Chicken Soup for the Soul' list for a very, very good reason.  If you want iyashikei in a story, this game is an excellent choice to play.

Rensou Relation is one of several kusoge that LoS put out in this period.

If you can get past the dated visual style, Sumire is actually an enjoyable VN, though it is done quite a bit differently from more modern-styled VNs.

  19. Bansenjin was the sequel that should never have been written.  Why couldn't Masada have just created another new IP?

Chrono Clock is at the lower end of the post-Mirai Nostalgia Purple Soft games in terms of quality, but that is still well above the average for a VN.

Evenicle has decent gameplay but the story is crap.

Kami no Rhapsody has a decent concept and story, but the gameplay suffers from inherent limitations due to a system that was probably designed with eventual mobile ports in mind.

Puramai Wars is a decent charage... but it doesn't go beyond decent.
