I love the Arifureta web novel too; nice to see someone talk about it on Fuwanovel. I'm not caught up on all the after stories, though.

For those who shy away from pure novels, the Arifureta manga is also a very solid adaptation, popular on sites like MangaDex. https://mangadex.org/title/248525ed-ad1c-4ddc-a834-5d6ce66a3ad2/arifureta-shokugyou-de-sekai-saikyou Also, those who want to read this novel in English should make sure to read the official J-Novel translation, which are really good and reads so much better than the mediocre half-MTL'ed fan translations. https://j-novel.club/read/arifureta-from-commonplace-to-world-s-strongest-volume-1-part-1

I agree that the connections Hajime has with the heroines are one of the best parts of this novel. I always try to find good harems like this, but it's hard. Campione is another great example.

P.S. On the subject of web novels, Kumo desu ga and Yondome wa Iya na Shi Zokusei Majutsushi are two other top-tier ones with antihero protagonists, which are (relatively) lesser-known. And I assume you've heard of Re-Zero, Overlord, and Mushoku Tensei... those are three other deeply unique web novels (well, Overlord at least abandoned its web novel version) with nice prose and amazing worldbuilding.

I'm reading Kumo right now... Campione I watched the anime for, but I honestly dunno if I want to read it.  Mushoku Tensei is fine as an anime, but I know for a fact that I'd hate reading the protagonist's perspective.  RE-zero I hate, so no chance I'll read it.  Yondome I just found on syosetu, so I'll probably start it at some point.

  2. Akatsuki Yureru Koi Akari is a prequel to Kizuna Kirameku Koi Iroha.  The main heroine is Tsubaki's elder sister and Tsubaki's child version makes an appearance during the story (ridiculously cute).  I will say that this protagonist is much, much more badass than the original's protagonist.  However, just like in that one, he is more of a support role than anything else.

  3. Love Destination is one of those games you either love or love to hate.  It is, on the surface, a 'do it over again' story where the protagonist tries to change his dismal past.  However, it is really about a bunch of psychologically-twisted heroines and heroines in horrible situations forming twisted relationships with a protagonist who is part old man, part late-adolescent.  Yes, this game is massively enjoyable... IF you like twisted relationships and heroines with warped (truly warped) personalities.  However, if you want something vanilla, this is a horrible choice (thus erogamescape's ratings, since erogamescape's voters are mostly vanilla people).

I recently played Death:end 2, and I do believe I reviewed it on my blog... but it is essentially a yuri-yuri horror story that is reminiscent of a combination of Persona and various psychedelic mindfuck horror series.

  4. Raillore no Ryakudatsusha is a classic example of what not to do when producing a chuunige.  There is no narration, the story is told primarily through dialogue and repetitive battle animations (seriously repetitive and constantly reused).  While the visuals are of 3rdeye's typical high quality as seen in Oratorio Phantasm and Sorcery Jokers, the fact is that this is a VN that defeats the point of being a VN.  VNs are meant to combine dialogue, visual aspects, and narration into one whole that tells the story (or makes you want to fap, depending on the VN).  However, this VN is an abomination that ignores the best aspect of visual novels entirely.

  5. Kimagure Temptation is based in the same setting as Akeiro Kaikitan and Nanairo Reincarnation.  Like those two, this is based around the existence of ghosts, but the entirety of the story is confined to the inside of the apartment building where the haunting occurs.  This is a kinetic novel (albeit with some bad endings) with a more sexually-specialized bent than the other two games.  It is still a quality game, though.

I didn't complete Cross Concerto, though this wasn't because it was awful.  Rather, it was despite the fact that it was interesting.  If you like mystery with mild fantasy, it will probably tickle your interest, but to me the former genre isn't that attractive.

  6. Tasogare no Folclore is a story about a predatory ojousama and her favorite prey, the protagonist (this relationship is literally like this), and it is a game about twisted nature, interdependent relationships, and uncontrollable urges.  I recommend it for people who like the Far Side paths in Tsukihime.

Dead Days tries to pass itself off as high-end psychological horror, but in the end, it all feels forced and pathetic.  It is based several years after Ookami.
