  1. I thought I'd finally get around to reading Air now that my workload is much lighter, but I'm having some trouble with my saves. To be specific, they keep disappearing randomly when I start the game. It doesn't happen every time (for example, it worked fine both yesterday and the day before that), but now they're gone again and it's getting more and more annoying (and time-consuming) having to skip through the game to find the point where I left off in my previous session.
The saves are still in the SAVEDATA folder, but the load screen in the game is completely empty.
Any idea what causes this and how I can fix it? I've tried running in compatibility mode and as administrator, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Actually, I wonder, does not choosing to allow Aoi to explain her actions lead to different result?

    Spoiler

Haven't tried it myself, but from what I understand, rejecting Aoi by immediately throwing her out of the house without any explanation leads you back to Miyuki's route. (Which would also prove that what Miyuki says during the baseball bat scene, about Shinichi fucking Aoi despite her unfaithfulness being the trigger for Miyuki going berserk, is actually true.)

But if, like you said, there was a scene where Miyuki was blaming the player and not Shinichi for forgiving Aoi, then this doesn't really make any sense.

    Spoiler

She doesn't specifically mention anything about the player forgiving Aoi (as far as I can remember), but she's holding the player accountable for forcing Shinichi's hand in that situation and thus ruining Shinichi's and Miyuki's "eternal love". The problem is that the thing that became the last straw for Miyuki was when Shinichi slept with Aoi despite her unfaithfulness (Miyuki explains this outright during the baseball bat scene), and that isn't something the player actually had any say in. Well, technically, it was the player who made the choice to have Aoi explain her actions, eventually leading to her being forgiven by Shinichi and them having a threesome with Haru, but it's kinda ridiculous that you should be held responsible to such an extent for a couple of choices that don't by any means reflect the consequences that come of them.

I understand that the MC forgave Aoi simply because he is the protagonist and she is the heroine, and this is how eroge work, but why do I have to do the same?

    Spoiler

This is honestly one of the biggest issues of the game if you ask me.
Later on in the story, the player is held accountable for forcing Shinichi's hand, but in reality, he's the one who forgave Aoi, not me. The only thing I got to choose was between throwing her out of the house right away or letting her explain her actions, and doing the latter should have no bearing on the matter of forgiving or not forgiving her. Miyuki says that she thought her dream of being together with Shinichi would come true, until he walked into the room to join Haru and Aoi, meaning she was ready to forgive him up to that point.
I never chose to forgive Aoi or agreed to any of the things that took place in that room, but the game moved on as if I did and based the entire escalation of the story and the fourth wall interaction on a couple of
vague choices that I couldn't possibly imagine the consequences of. It would have been another matter entirely if you actively had to choose between either forgiving or not forgiving Aoi, but there's just no way to know what's going to happen based on the choices you're actually presented with.

I kind of want to see the photo of my face when I was reading this scene, lol.

This illustrates the situation for myself:
    o97iiG.png

They also pretty much completely dismissed the notion that girls might want to read this VN.

  5. Ah, they're referring to how hard it is to understand the mystery in each individual chapter? Seems like a kinda pointless thing to mention, to be honest! When I was about to start chapter 1 and saw that notice, I figured the difficulty thing meant there might be a lot of bad endings and/or some sort of puzzles, so I was kinda surprised to find out there were none of that.

  6. Yeah, it's another one of those VNs I've been looking forward to for a really long time! I've heard it's preferable to play Higurashi first, so my Umineko playthrough has been delayed until now because of that.

By the way, what's this about "difficulty" that's mentioned when you start a chapter in Higurashi? The difficulty of chapter 1 was described as "extremely high" despite it being a purely kinetic novel, and I tried booting up chapter 2 just now and saw that the difficulty of that's supposedly "lower than Onikakushi, but extremely vicious". Is this something that will make sense eventually or is it some kind of inside joke I'm not quite getting?

  7. If the console arcs aren't that important, I think I'll just focus on the main series for now. I'm planning to read Umineko, which I'm even more psyched about, as soon as I'm done with Higurashi, so I might as well delay any Higurashi side stories a bit in favor of that!

  8. Just finished the first chapter of Higurashi! I thought they'd start off slow since this is basically just the prologue for the series, but it turned out more intense than I expected it to be.
They did an excellent job of building atmosphere. Despite my high tolerance for horror, some of the scenes actually managed to creep me out a bit. First and foremost, the one where you find out

    Spoiler

Rena was idling just outside Keiichi's room for an hour, while he was on the phone with Ooishi.

I expect things will only escalate from here.
Honestly, I would love to continue with the other chapters right away, but if I plough through them like that, I'd probably be done quite some time before the 07th mod for chapter 8 is released, and it would suck having to wait weeks for the conclusion.

A question: When should I read the console arcs? For example, according to this flowchart, it seems like Taraimawashi, Tsukiotoshi and Someutsushi take place between chapter 3 and 4 of the main series. Would it be preferable to actually read them before I read chapter 4 or should I put off reading all the console arcs until I'm done with the main series? (A couple of the console arcs haven't even been translated yet, apparently.)

Also I don't like how they keep trying to convince me that fucking my sister cousin is a natural thing to do

    Spoiler

Yeah, it felt pretty awkward how adamant Miyako was about Shinji and Hatsune hooking up.

How many chapters is this supposed to be anyway? I'm on like chapter 6

    There are

    11-13

depending on which route you pick.

  10. After going on a few emotional roller coasters lately, I decided I should read something lighthearted for a change. Here we go!

    9z6zNm.png

All jokes aside, I've been looking forward to this for years and have by some miracle managed to completely evade any spoilers all this time.
I figure now that the final chapter is just a week away, the 07th mod for it should be released by the time I finish chapter 7 if I play through one chapter every weekend starting now.

  11. Just finished Totono. I kinda wish I hadn't been spoiled to such an extent beforehand, but I still think it was a great read overall. It was shorter than I expected, though. I thought it would be somewhere on the upper end of the 10-30 hours listed on VNDb, but I finished it all in roughly 10-or-so, even though I'm a pretty slow reader.
I'm honestly not sure how to convey my impressions without giving away anything myself, so maybe we should just leave it at that in terms of unmarked text.

    A few random, spoilery notes:

    Spoiler

    - Some of the scenes kept me on edge to an extent few other VNs have managed to do.
    - I'm glad there was a happy ending. I was afraid it was all gonna end in misery.
    - The NTR was horrible. I knew before I started playing that there would be some form of NTR involving at least one of the girls, but it was way worse than I imagined. It honestly didn't even make sense to me why things went down the way they did. Aoi said she had to sleep with Haru to preserve her existence because Shinichi's route ended, but what decides that and what decides to which point Haru's route (or any other possible sexual partner she has in the future) can act as a replacement? It just felt like a stupid pretext to force NTR into the game.
    - I chose Miyuki over Aoi in the end, and it was mostly because of the whole NTR thing.
    - The h-scene where Miyuki has sex with the player rather than the protagonist was a pretty interesting twist that I haven't seen in any other visual novels.

  12. I'm reading Totono at the moment, and it seems the skip function is broken after

    Spoiler

Miyuki "rewrote" the game UI and whatnot.

It worked just fine before, but now it skips unread text as well although that option isn't selected in the game settings. Is this something I'm going to have to be concerned about for the rest of the game or will it eventually start working properly again?

EDIT: Done with the game, and it turned out the skip issue didn't affect that much in the end.

  13. Yeah, I know that part; I just don't know if what happens in SnMD2 is considered the true route of the story or if it's just another "what if" scenario. Kureha's route in the original game felt somewhat like a true route, since it had more chapters, actually had a "final chapter", and

    Spoiler

it's the only route where the main antagonist returns,

but that's probably not the case.

I'm guessing the fact that Sakura no Mori Dreamers 2 is a sequel rather than a fandisc might be an indication that what happens in it is canon.

  14. Finished Sakura no Mori Dreamers yesterday! My only real complaints are that the motives of the main antagonist were pretty uninteresting, and there were some major inconcistencies between routes (just like in Princess Evangile, which I also read recently). The one that annoys me most is the fact that

    Spoiler

the main antagonist returns in one of the routes but not any of the others, despite the circumstances being exactly the same.

Other than these things, I think this was a nice read. The art and the general ambience of the game was great, and the pacing felt well optimized. I liked all of the main characters, and I'm also very happy that there weren't any tsunderes or other overly tropey/stereotypical characters in the cast.

Is the sequel, which is currently only available in Japan, considered a canon continuation of the story? I guess that would mean the heroine routes in the first game are only "what if" scenarios.
In any case, I'm looking forward to reading it. I have no idea if it's even going to get localized, so it looks like I'm leaning towards reading it in Japanese at a slowass newbie pace. (Well, at least there's less risk of burning out if it's a story I actually enjoy.)

To be honest, though, I went into VNs exactly to escape from gameplay, which in narrative games can often just become pointless padding distracting from the parts I actually care about.

I completely agree. The reason I got into VNs in the first place was because I was looking for a more story-focused experience. If I wanted gameplay, I'd just go play one of the many regular video games in my backlog, but I've found myself less and less inclined to do so these last few years.

    Crackling laugh, extended laugh

This is a major issue for me in Sakuranomori Dreamers. There's this strange, extremely drawn-out laugh that you hear occasionally, and it's obviously meant to sound malicious/creepy but actually comes off as too unnatural to be believeable and thus loses its intended effect.

  17. Well, I'm glad it's getting localized, but I can't understand why Sekai would pick this over Akeiro, which is Silky's highest rated VN. Furthermore, Kimagure Temptation apparently contains both character appearances and other references from Akeiro that will be lost on anyone who hasn't read it.

  18. The only one I've read is the one on Steam, meaning the all ages release.

    Spoiler

From what I can tell, the 18+ version is the original one, so you're saying that one's even more depressing than the one I've seen? (Which is sort of inconclusive, but it's strongly inferred that Tomoya either died from the operation or was left with permanent brain damage.)
