  1. ^Enticing, isn't it? :makina:

I play Ikinari Anata ni Koishiteiru. What a rollercoaster it is. I might end up writing full review of this, because that strange title it is.
So. I really sympathize with protag, who is just abused by girls around him. I feel genuinely sorry for him, and if VN is making me feel actual emotions for characters (instead of, f.e. anger on writers for stupid plot), then it's really meaning something.

Common route was at points baffling, sometimes cringing, and on one sequence was really positively scary and creepy (school ghost interogations). (I can't wait for Subahibi, cause it was the same guy who wrote that and common route in Ikinari ^^). But it wasn't really good. It was fine. 6/10

Then I went on Tsumugu route. It was just shit. Badly written, horrible structure, very short and boring. 2.3/10

After this I started Ryou route. It started painfully. I was really negatively attituded to Ikinari at this point, so I took every scene with bad anticipation, but... It slowly redeemed itself. It even had a h-scenes which was further developing characters, and have a reall meaning to further relations! How often is that?! I happily gave it 6/10.

And now, Tane route. OH. MY. GOD. Reall people. Reall characters. Story. Developments. Great writing. Emotions. I even nearly cried. Twice! First when

    Spoiler

    Tane was bullied

and second time during buildup for a first sex scene. So much great, trully lovely emotions in here. I haven't got a teary eye (not in sad kind of way) during VN since first confession I read in Majikoi - with Miyako.

And that's not all! It is really great peek to a minds of adolescent first lovers. Their behaviour, their thoughts, they feel real! I was the same (when I was 13, not 16-17 like them, but still)!
And what really stealed my heart was this Chouji(protag) thoughts:

First he scolded himself for having 'lewd' thoughts on his newly girlfriended girlfriend. I was cringed. Then he said that he must stop his urges, he must treat Tane as his little sister. (I was cringed and baffled - cancer basically). And on top of this, he said to himself, that he must never look at Tane as a woman (I was left petrified with baffledness, totally stumped and dissapointed, cause route was good so far).
    Sounds terrible, right?

But... he reedemed himself. He redeemed himself oh so much! How? He just few scenes later explained, why he must contaminate his urges for having sex with that really busty, airheaded, not-very-smart, but lovely girl. He said that she IS JUST LIKE A CHILD. And he cannot touch a kid light that. That it is wrong to violate that immature person. That this is too early for her to have sex. F*CK YEAH! Chew that all you loli-violating protagonists! This is how you treat a child-like girl (note that she was childlish just in behaviour, not in physique!).
I was so happy that I unknowingly did a Banderas gif posture. Like that:
    QONVIyz.gif
and then it all turned out that she is mature enough (and not with just saying this, actually showing this in going-ons!), and finally after beautiful scene they had sex. Nothing rushed, great buildup, perfectlly (till now) written route. 9.5/10

I didn't finished it yet though. I have still around 4-5 h scenes to endure. :| And I'm really affraid that quality will just go down. But hopefully not very much.

To summ up - Ikinari, while really not perfect, and strange title is my second favourite (after MuvLuv series) title right now. I love it.

I disagree with this; I feel a powerful tragedy lets you know what'll happen, while making you think, "pls pls dont actually do that to them," but then shit hits anyway -- that's still tension. To me, at least. What do you think?

I hated it. Forewarning the player that something bad will happen. Like putting the sentencce "and that was a last time I have seen her" and then few hours in the game alter, protag finds out she is dead. It's killing the tension, mood, everything.

Also - I hate futanaris. Not a fan of tentacles (but if done well, like Marunomi, then can be fun) and guro. Anything else - I'm fine if story is good.

Clannad, Hoshizora no Memoria, eden*, Symphonic Rain (this is if speak only about "slice of life" aspect). Even Majikoi. And Grisaia.

Virtually anything is better than Extra. Even Katawa Shoujo and Everlasting Summer is better.

First diclaimer - Extra actually doesn't have any typical 'slice of life'. I would say it's just a pure 'slice of life based over the top comedy'. So comparission to something like Clannad is just... apples and oranges.
And indeed, Majikoi has some great comedy in its common route (don't know the rest). But so does MLE.

Buuuut. You mentioned Hoshimemo. Okay, thank you, we're done here. :) Nothing to talk to you about (I gave that boring piece of cancer shit whole 4.8/10).

If that bunch of idiotic brainless non-interesting time-wasting scenes named "Muv-Luv Extra" is fun and good slice of life comedy for you... Well, that's a bad taste. Read and watch more slice of life and comedies, educate yourself and if you come back to this one years later - I think you will change your opinion about this worthless time waster.

Any titles you would recommend to 'educate myself'?

Will Tsukihime remake's release get postponed that long?

Well, "They announced a remake of the original Tsukihime in the June 2008" ;) So yeah. First arts, sprites, or something was shown last year I believe.

Ugh, seeing the word chuunige really makes me lost interest of Tokyo Babel.  :amane:

You have ultimate chuuni on your avatar mate. :P

    8 hours ago, gijimu said:

Well, I just happened to dislike chuunige I played (S;G and Comyu) that I dropped them, because of 'what the heck those guys are thinking/talking about' that came to my mind when playing them. Hmm, maybe I'm the only one in fuwanovel who doesn't like chuunige.

    :michiru:

Oh, you're confusing chuuni with cuunibyou, which is common I would say.
So, Chuunibyou is a 'superhero wannabe' and chuuni is a 'superhero'. You know, like in Steins;Gate, Okarin is only pretending to be a mad scientist who is taking over the world, while reall chuuni would be actually taking over the world.

So chuuni is great. :D Chuunibyou - depends. Still love S;G but I was trying to start it twice, and only a second time, when I know that protag is a madman (well, he is not, but he gives that impression at fist...) I was able to endure the beginning and really dive in that best VN I ever read.

    And that's how I see it. Maybe I'm mistaken, but I don't think I'm wrong much. ;)

[again - I don't know how to edit my previous post to add a new quote, somebody will teach me? :paranoid:]

  6. I personally don't really get why Muv Luv Extra (the first one) get so much shit. It's slice of life comedy, with short branching rpoutes. It's silly, it's over the top, it's rather dumb, but it's (for me at last) very funny. I remember laughing out loud few times, and that is not a common thing for me, while reading VNs. So don't believe in opinions try it for yourself.

But still - I would recommend to wait a few months with MuvLuv series. In March we will get official release, with polished translation of Muv Luv Extra/Unlimited, then few months after polished (and polishing is really needed here!) Muv Luv Alernative, and next few months later we will get photonlowers and photonflowers, which are basically all fandiscs combined in two 'packs'. So far I read only 'Muv Luv Altered Fable' from those fandiscs, and it is my favourite chapter of Muv Luv series (although not canon, it still not contradicts anything and could be canon). Especially right after Alternative, I found myself in need to live with those muvluv characters for a longer piece of time, and in some lighter form. And Altered Fable was PERFECT for that.

So basically - wait for a few months. And if translation of Kimi ga Nozomu Eien (which is being made as we speak) suddenly be done at that point - the better, and maybe you should think of starting muvluv adventure reading here, not on Muv Luv Extra. But I haven't read it yet, so will not voice my oppinion on it.

And you said there is like million - yeah, it is. Muv Luv chronicles, total eclipse etc. But don't mind them. Main story is MuvLuv Extra/Unlimited - MuvLuv ALternative - (MuvLuv Altered Fable which is perfect afterstory). Everything else is just additional stories with new characters in that universum, sometimes with recurring characters from main series, but not in main points of these stories.

Few words at the end of this post:

    - Kei Ayamine best girl in Extra
    - Kasumi Yashiro best girl in Unlimited (Tama far away second, cause no bond was made with Ayamine in my opinion)
    - Kasumi Yashiro best girl in Alternative (Kei Ayamine far away second)
    - Kashiwagi Haruko best girl in Altered Fable (although I HATED 'her' story in fandisc called Haruko Maniax - I will talk about that in spoiler below)

And while I gave MuvLuv series grades like 7; 8; 8.5; 7.8 is by far my favourite series. Although has it flaws, and f.e Steins;Gate is much, much better vn, my love for ML is incontestable.
It started with really hating the art style on screens on vndb, and really hating the game in first like 20 minutes (art style, stupid Tsundere right at the start etc), but it was really short time till I started loving this. Reall rollercoaster of emotions, really low level of 'cancer', really an Experience, not only a 'just a vn'.

    Haruko Maniax:

    Spoiler

Through whole MuvLuv series protagonist is Takeru. And after spending above 80 hours 'as him' I came across Haruko Maniax. I loved Haruko in Altered Fable so I wanted to check it out. And... it was painfull. Like really painful. Those h scenes, which were including a Haruko and some completly new guy, were so wrong to read. He was not a Takeru, he wasn't even a protagonist of Haruko Maniax! And he was so persistend in those h scenes, even when Haruko was saying him to stop, etc (I know it's a common thing in vns, but it still is wrong...). It was like reading a scenefrom a perspective of a rapist who is raping your favourite character [to not use the word 'waifu' :P]. It was painfull, it was terrible, it made me nauseous. If it was Takeru, in whom I projected myself - then fine, go on, it's fine, it's me. But here... I was jus terribly jealous. Painful, painful experience.

Hah, yes! I remember my laughter at Isuzu route from Hoshimemo, when he, while working few hours a day, few dawys a week at a cafe with zero to little customers suddenly was able to pay for

    Spoiler

brand new telescope, and trip to Australia for two

  8. So... traits. Searching by them on vndb seems impossible. Or maybe I'm just too stupid? If I'm wrong here, then please enlighten me.
But right now I can't see the way to easy find a vn from particular genre (lets take charamoege for example) where heroine is wearing glasses/heels/hoods.
Do you know how to find that? I don't want to go to trait list and open every single one character and check her vn, genre, translation avaiability, etc.

And if I'm right and it's impossible to find that on vndb, then maybe can you help me with those traits?

    Note:
Ikinari Anata ni Koishiteiru has 2 heroines with hooded sweaters, and one of them is even wearing hood on her head, which is great. So this is all I know.

  9. After first bad end of Kara no Shoujo.

Damn, it's so much better than Cartagra. Not as dark unfortunatelly, but besides music, everything is done right. Charactters, plot, detective work, protagonist. It's good.
BUT. The system. These blind choices are painfull. I want to read this without walkthrough, but I'm unable, because there is no way to know, what I did right or wrong. Just shooting in blind... It kills the mood.

Well it's intended if you actually know color psychology. Artists don't just color an anime character's hair for nothing. They want to convey a character though it.

Green means nurturing and taking care of others, a trait that maids are known for.

Same thing with most pink haired heroines' mannerisms in VNs. Pink means outgoing, affectionate, intimate, and kind. I can name maybe 30+ pink haired heroines right on top of my head who have all these traits.

    Know any article about that?

THATS IT!! theyre both poor. i knew there was one more.

Basicaly the biggest similiarity is probably that both of them vere charage, that came out translated at the end of last year (4 days difference between them). ;)

  12. I youtubed Noble Works to check that dynamics of sprites and indeed. They're really active, which is really nice. From my point of view (check my vndb ;) ) it's like crossing Muv-Luvs' sprites poses with Ikinaris' sprites movement during talking.

Still - no lip sync, which is sad. But we're going more and more into full animated territory. Animated h scenes, high sprites mobility... I wonder if we lived to day, when most of new vns will look like School Days.

Also thanks for answers everybody. ;)

Clumsy/Childish characters. I know a lot of people hate characters like Chinami, but I just can't seem to get enough of these helpless things, although I admit it can reach a breaking point, but so far I've always had good luck with these characters. I do despise when a story flips these personalities upside down during their routes though.

Agree...to some point. Clumsy/childish characters can be great but they must by shy. Chinami was pure opposite of shyness, obnoxious and loud, so thats a big no-no for me. But cute, shy not loli heroines? Luv'em all.

Other cliche... strange/cold~deres. Don't know the proper word. :P But those girls who are cold, speaking with little amount of words, and acting a little strange. Basically Rei Ayanami. Best thing ever.

A general thought about G-Senjou no Maou

Note: Don't open it Fred (seriously don't)

      Hide contents

Yeah so hearing about people talk about G-Senjou and their ideas about Maou's identity, to my surprise the vast majority believes that it's protag's dual personality.
I mean when I played G-Senjou, I was convinced that dual personality isn't the answer simply because the hints towards it were just too blatant. And looking at it from the writer's pov, making such obvious signs would only be used as a kind of trap.
I knew all along that Maou wasn't Kyosuke but obviously didn't know who it actually was until they showed that flashback where we first learn about the existence of Kyousuke's older brother. At that point itself I was pretty convinced that Kyouhei was Maou.

So all in all I think the whole deal was pretty obvious. What do y'all think ?

    Spoiler

I was believing that he's Maou. It was just shoved at our faces that I just took is as truth. I didn't took this as buildup for 'great twist - Kyosuke is Mao', rather simply slow reveal of this 'truth - Kyosuke is Maou'. But in the end I got that big twist reveal, but instead of Kyoske I got Kyouhei. Which was fine.

So far I'm enjoying it. Although there are some comedy, the dark mood is still there when it comes to protagonist doing his job. Well, in every murder mystery, the investigator always risk his life and depending on the choices, I think it's possible to solve the mystery in some way. Way to go, though, I only played for two in-game days.

Bolded - main issue is, he's no doing his job at all. But this is a discussion to after you finish it. ;)

  16. Tonight I'm starting Kara No Shoujo. I'm so pumped up!
Cartagra had sooo much potential, great technical side, great dark mood, great art style, music, but all it was wasted on shitty characters, absolutly no detective work from protag, bland plot with unlogicall plotfarts and hilarious branching endings.
But I heard that Kara is much better, so my expectations are high. I really, really hope to not be disappointed like in Cartagra.
