  1. It's one VN where I love to see the reactions of other players when they read it. Also, in case you're wondering, there is enough clues in Ever17 to get what's going on. I personally enjoyed trying to put all pieces of the puzzle together myself, but, yeah, I was slightly spoiled before I started. It didn't really break my experience, but I had a clue where to start looking for hints. Or, you know, you can follow the usual path and be completely mindblown at the end. Both approaches work. Obviously, I am not going to comment on your current ideas.
  2. Continuing to read Ascendance of a Bookworm, and I really feel a great urge to learn Japanese simply to read this LN. And supposedly it didn't even get to a good part yet. Just how good does get later?!
  3. Don't worry, it wasn't in that sense. More like, in this sense. And don't worry, you won't say that you're the same with her after finishing her route. No spoiling though.
  4. I wonder if you are going to have the same impression after finishing her route. I would like to meet you in person in that case.
  5. I confess that sometimes I like to make up concepts for ridiculous horror stories. Like a story about a kindergarten that was infected by a virus that turned all infected people into evil zombie-like Santas. Am I weird?
  6. Install some messed up guro nukige and start playing it when everybody can see. You won't need to do anything after that.
  7. Actually, it was 21 minutes. lol.
  8. Not really. Their social media page was updated 21 hours ago, so it's not dead. And apparently it's almost ready...
  9. You know, I kind of agree with that, in a broad sense. Though, ironically the best written VNs in that sense would be nukige and purely comedic VNs (and, probably, moege). Every line there actually has a clear purpose: to lead to the next h-scene and have the player aroused in the process, or to entertain the player with every line, respectively. With plot-focused VNs... yeah, it's complicated. First of all, I'm definitely not against including slice-of-life scenes in a more serious plot, even though technically they are semi-pointless. Well, @Thyndd more or less said it in his post, so I'm not going to repeat it. At the same time, there's always a limit of how much slice-of-life should be there. Not every person is patient enough to sit through 20 hours of shitty comedy to get to the good parts. And, well, it's also true that technically you're supposed to develop the characters during the plot, not before the plot stars. I'm not sure how true it is in terms of VNs (for example, I simply can't imagine how Muv-Luv would work without Extra) so, maybe, it's just another method to do the same things. On the other hand, I agree that this scene from SubaHibi is completely random and probably shouldn't be there in the first place. Though, it's an h-scene, and we all know what its real purpose was. SubaHibi for me is a good example of how a needlessly fetishistic H-scene might actually hurt the story (and don't take me wrong, I love SubaHibi). Actually, the sex in It's My Own Invention actually makes pretty good sense to me: it shows well how completely messed up in the head a certain character is. My biggest problem is with Looking Glass Insects. I don't know. I guess, I have to accept that these scenes exist simply for porn and see them as such, but I'm still looking for a meaning for some reason. So, in general, I do agree with you that VNs tend to lack substance sometimes, and they do things much more slowly than they are probably should be done, but there are too many details to speak of. Ultimately, I'm not dissatisfied with the current state of VNs to the point where I stop enjoying them. There's still enough good things they bring to me, and I'm willing to bear with things I don't particularly like. Well, if it changes at some point, I will find a new hobby, that's simple.
  10. I'm pretty sure it was translated after this thread was made, lol.
  11. Well, I guess. But at the same time, I don't know about you, but I wouldn't read Les Miserables as a VN if I can simply read a book. At the same time, it's definitely not the only way to make a VN work. For example, something like Mug Luv Alternative doesn't even need stellar writing, considering how much it relies on its visuals.
  12. By the way, would most classical novels even work if we adapted them into the VN format, simply adding sprites and fitting music? I'm personally not so sure about it.
  13. Wait, isn't this actually quite a lot? I think, it's practically impossible to enjoy some form of media very often. Even if you only read very good VNs, if there are too many of them, you will start finding faults in them. That's exactly why I don't try to read too many good VNs in a row, I'll eventually just burn out (happened to me a few times in the past). As for quality of writing, I think that books simply have more titles in general than story-focused VNs, so it's quite natural that the standards are higher. Plus, as I said earlier, the standards for writing are pretty relative to what time you live in and what media you are talking about. Most light novels, for example, are pretty badly written if we compare them to "serious" literature, but it doesn't change the fact that some of them have pretty good world-building or interesting characters. To me this matters more than mostly technical stuff like the quality of writing, so, I guess, I'm lucky.
  14. I think it's pretty much the same for every country.
  15. Ah, yeah, I know about Kira, but I wasn't talking about it. Actually, I guess, I misunderstood some things. I was talking about this: I thought, the OP knew about 07th-mod project and wasn't considering a true adaptation for Sui for some reason. But now, as I think more carefully about it, this was probably referring to the PS2 patches for the old PC version. From what I know, both the new patches for the original PC arcs, and the extra arcs port (I think?) actually have CGs, as well as character voices. So, yeah, @Naku-Chan, the project you were talking about actually already exists. Sorry if I confused you. And, by the way, some of the extra arcs from Sui were based on the manga-original arcs for Higurashi, Onisarashi-hen and Yoigoshi-hen. You may check them out if you still haven't. While I didn't really like the second manga, Onisarashi is pretty great, and it has exactly the same feeling about it as the main story of Higurashi. From what I know, Sui adapts Yoigoshi as it is, while Onisarashi is divided into a question arc and an answer arc in the usual Higurashi style.
  16. Well, there is a project about adding some extra arcs to the Steam version of Higurashi. I don't really understand why you don't like it, but I'm not particularly interested in it anymore to be honest, so maybe I'm missing something.
  17. I was talking about Higurashi. I thought it was released by Alchemist (which went bankrupt), but, apparently, it was this company, which is also marked as "closed" on VNDB. Well, it depends on who owns the rights on Sui right now. Most likely, the official localization will never happen. As for fan-tls, I don't know. Well, the common knowledge is that the original arcs are pretty bad anyway, so it's probably not worth it.
  18. You simply can't fan-translate a PS3 game without porting it on PC. It's impossible due to the technical limitations. And the company that released it went bankrupt, so it probably won't be officially localized either. So, no. And, from what I heard, the new arcs aren't very good anyway.
  19. Really, what makes a story well written? With all honesty, is there even an answer to this question? I'm pretty sure that in the current world where 99% of all writing manuscript get rejected after an editor reads the first page, classics like Les Miserables, which takes several chapters in the beginning describing the life of an important but secondary character, would never be accepted by any publisher. I don't think VNs in that sense should even be compared to literature, because they aren't literature. Grisaia, for example, would never work as a book, but it's a pretty good VN if you ask me or a lot of other people around here. And I'm not even talking about something like Ever17, which is practically impossible to adapt to any other form of media. For me good writing in a VN always comes down to whether I feel entertained or bored while reading it. And, you know, DDLC, with all its flaws, actually managed to keep me interested before its end, so I would argue that it's actually a pretty well-written VN. You may disagree with me, but I don't particularly care. I'd say, if you are dissatisfied with what some VNs do, just don't read them. And yeah, I'm always for a bigger variety in VN types, and I really wouldn't mind if a new genre of VNs suddenly becomes much more similar to regular books. Actually, I will love that. I just hate when some people imply that there is a correct way to enjoy media, no matter what it is.
  20. I use Youtube for that. Or, you know, eating is actually the only time when I can shamelessly read VNs without bothering that I still have work to do.
  21. Exactly. Well, I do sometimes when somebody else watches it. Overall though I don't even know why you even need it nowadays when you have the Internet.
  22. And what if VirginSmasher is actually a terminator sent from the future with a quest to destroy all moege?
