  1. I don't know if that's the original japanese text. It's likely that a lot of these things come from the translators and not the original script.

I forgot which novel it was but it said "..something FTW" I'm pretty sure FTW is not a japanese term. That might be just me.

Yeah, I thought it might have been the translators, since it's probably safe to assume that VN translators are semi-familiar with internet culture.  Even so, I didn't expect that at all.

Yeah, FTW is definitely an English term, but other languages have adopted various forms of internet slang into their own languages.  I seeing someone in a multiplayer game say something close to "JK" in Chinese (I asked a friend what it meant afterwards), and I know that didn't originate from China.

  2. If we do anything else after this, it probably won't be ponies.

Really?  I thought that if you were dedicated enough to make a full MLP VN that you'd want to do more, or at least keep working together  : /

Regardless of whether or not it's about MLP/influenced by it/whatever, I hope you guys do keep working together.  Even though the demo was a little rough, the base elements were solid.  It'd be a shame if nothing else came out of your partnership.

At least this novel encouraged me to watch season 4 of MLP which i never did start.

As a brony, I'd definitely recommend watching it.  It doesn't feel quite the same as the past seasons, but it's still the show it was.  The humor is still ever-present, and there's still a lesson to be learned at the end of every episode.

  3. It makes me happy inside too Nosebleed =3~

I prefer when translations keep all the honorifics. Sometimes, it shows character development. Character A might call B by her last name, then they grow close and he calls her by her first name. If the sub always uses the first name, that growth is lost. Same thing for san, etc.

I thought it would be standard to keep the honorifics in...you know, since most people reading the translations are semi-familiar with them already; what are the odds of someone reading a VN that hasn't seen an anime or read a manga?  Besides, it lets you know how familiar/close the characters are with each other, which is definitely lost in the translation.

  4. I started playing Hoshizora no Memoria, and I really got confused when Chinami started referring to herself as Chinami instead of "me" or "I".  At first I thought it was an error in the translation, but since it was consistent, I decided to look her up.  Apparently this is the explanation: http://tropes.wikia.com/wiki/Third_Person_Person

About how common is this?  Just wondering, since it was a little strange to see at first.

  5. A song of Fire and Ice is gritty, political, fantasy. You'll really struggle to find anything similar to that in VNs.You'll have more success with the science fiction stories.

Yeah, that doesn't surprise me.  There isn't a lot of realistic fantasy literature out there, so it'd be a logical conclusion that there wouldn't be many VNs of the same type.

I mentioned them in my previous post. :P

Muv-Luv contains both Muv-Luv Extra and Muv-Luv Unlimited, in that order, and Muv-Luv Alternative is just that. Extra is a very generic slice-of-life that introduces the characters, Unlimited is where the fun starts and Alternative is the reason why people read the trilogy in the first place.

In a slightly different vein Sharin no Kuni, G-Senjou no Maou and Grisaia no Kajitsu all have a high-school setting, but there's a lot of action and the protagonists are much more badass than the average VN protag.

Oooooh.  Duh.  Sorry about that, I thought that Extra was a separate VN from Unlimited.  Herp derp.  I really gotta look more carefully at the descriptions, I guess.

Grisaia no Kajitsu sound intriguing.  It's now on my list of downloads.  That one's gonna take a while, since it takes me a few hours to download a 1 GB VN, and holy hell, Grisaia no Kajitsu is big.

  6. Oh, I've heard of Muv-Luv before, but wasn't sure if I should check it out.  In what order does it go in?  I tried to guess, but I failed pretty hard, and VNDB wasn't that helpful.

Those two sound familiar...I think I've heard them mentioned.  Two more on my list to check out  :3

  7. I'll basically reiterate what I just posted in another thread (hi, Zeno!), if you want a long VN with a ton of routes, there's Clannad. If you want a long VN but maybe not a hundred gazillion routes, there's Little Busters. If you want a long VN that isn't entirely high-school slice-of-life, there's Rewrite. If you want a medium-sized VN in a wintry setting there's Kanon. If you want a medium-sized VN in a more supernatural setting, there's Air. If you want a short VN there's Planetarian. In fact, even if you don't want a short VN, read it anyways. :P

Hai!  Pretty funny that the VNs I suggested were the ones that you suggested to me, huh?

Glad to have been of some help, Trident.  If you want to know more about them, I'm not the one to ask, since I've never played any of them  :/  Flutterz seems to be fairly knowledgeable about them, though.

  8. Hmm, do you like stories that involve parallel worlds or anything with fantasy or action elements in it?

Do I ever.  Lets see...I've read the entire A Song of Ice and Fire series, the entire Ender's Game series, I played the crap out of the Mass Effect games.  Those are the books and games I like that have to do with fantasy off the top of my head.  Regarding parallel worlds...can't really say one way or the other, since I haven't had that much exposure to it as a plot device.

     I'll check out your suggestions.

Well Key is essentially Nakige - The Company, so if you want a long VN you have Clannad and Little Busters, if you want a medium one there's Kanon and Air, and if you want a short, kinetic novel there's Planetarian. There's also Rewrite, but it's pretty different from what they normally do. Although I'm afraid I can't guarantee that none of the endings are heartwrenching, but if I told you which ones to avoid it'd be a pretty big spoiler. :/

I also really like to recommend Symphonic Rain alongside Key stuff, because it's very similar to what they do but made by other people. The ones you have downloaded are pretty good too, as well as Ever17 and Steins;Gate which are two of my favourites.

Well, that's a coincidence.  I was reading one of the Top 50 VNs list here on Fuwanovel and started downloading Kanon.  I'll have to check out the other Key VNs, too.

  9. I can't give you any recommendations from personal experience, but I can list a few popular Key VNs that I've heard about.  The Spoilers just have the descriptions of the VNs in them.

    Clannad

Although in his third year of high school, Okazaki Tomoya does not pay too much attention to school. His classmates are worried about him, but his best friend does not mind.

He does not want a girlfriend but he does not realize that he is popular with the girls.
However, his life changes when he meets a girl on the way to school...

    Little Busters

Riki was a child when his parents died, leaving him hopeless and depressed. What saved him was a group of four kids calling themselves the Little Busters. They took Riki out and played with him during his time of need. He really enjoyed being together with them, and his grief gradually faded away. Now in his second year of high school they still hang out, fight and live together, and enjoy their school life.

    Kanon

Yuuichi Aizawa, a high school student, returns to a town that he last visited 7 years previously to live with his aunt and cousin. For a reason he’s not quite sure of, he can hardly remember anything about his last visit, but initially this doesn’t seem to worry him too much.

The day after he arrives he goes into town where he (literally) bumps into a girl named Ayu Tsukimiya, and Yuuichi’s memories slowly begin to return.

  10. I made a thread like this a while ago, but since it's been so long since I was active (excluding today, of course) that I thought I might make another thread asking for recommendations.  I started getting into VNs with Katawa Shoujo, with my second VN being Fate/stay night.  I have a few others downloaded but haven't started playing them yet, including Hoshizora no Memoria and Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo.  The last two were recommended to me by someone in my last recommendations thread, so I'm not sure if they're in the same vein as Katawa Shoujo and Fate/stay night.

Anyway, for the types of VNs that I prefer, I guess you could say that I like nakiges, as long as they aren't too depressing and have a decently good ending.  Anything that ends badly tends to get me down, and I have a hard time coming out of funks, so, again, I prefer to keep my VNs not too sad.  For example, Katawa Shoujo is pretty much ideal in it's lack of any material truly deeply depressing, at least outside of the bad endings.  I can handle some slightly more intense content, but I'd prefer if it wasn't that common, or at least was spaced out throughout the story and not all at once.  I like most of my VNs to have explicit content, but if the story is good enough, it's okay if it doesn't have any 18+ content.  I do need them to be translated into English, since the only other language I can speak (brokenly) is Spanish.

If I left anything out, feel free to ask!  I'm a little new to VNs, so I might not be up to snuff with all of the lingo.  Thanks for your time, and if you gave me a recommendation, thanks again!

EDIT: I didn't expect this thread to get replied to after 12 days.  I have more than enough VNs for now, so while your recommendations are still appreciated, I only have so much room on my Parallels virtual hard drive, and may not even be able to download them any time soon.

  11. Well, Wavedash, I downloaded the new demo, and the autosaves and manual saves from the old demo showed up, but unsurprisingly they couldn't be opened.  The manual saves that I had tried to create hadn't shown up when I tried to make them in the first demo.  The autosave worked, but other than that, I'm not quite sure what went wrong.  I could have just been saving over them, but I don't think that was it, since I could only see the autosaves.

Kinda pointless pointing this out now, since I'm able to save and load in the new demo perfectly fine, but oh well, better late than never.  The current saving system seems to work fine on Macs, or at least on Mavericks.

  12. O.O  Wow, I didn't expect Wavedash to pop up in this thread.  Not every day one of the creators of a VN shows up.

I tried the demo on my Mac, and at least before the demo was updated with the new names, I was unable to save.  It didn't crash, it just wouldn't save anything.  Not a huge problem, since it was just a demo, but I hope that won't still happen in the Mac release.

  13. Sorry for my increasingly large amount of posts, but I thought people might appreciate a list of the characters with their new names and their appearances, in case they don't want to go looking around for them.

    Tom Stone, the protagonist

    Tai Saito, aka Twilight Sparkle

Paulina "Polly" Parks, aka Pinkie Pie

    Faith Summers, aka Fluttershy

    Annabel-Jean "Anne" Smith, aka Applejack

    Robin Douglass, aka Rainbow Dash

    Rosalyn “Rose” Montgomery, aka Rarity

    Side Characters:

    Dixie Hayes, aka Derpy Hooves

Headmasters Selena and Lynette Solomon, aka Princess Celestia and Princess Luna

Also, if you're interested, here's some NSFW commission art Zap Apple did for someone, featuring Annabel-Jean "Anne" Smith (Applejack) and Robin Douglass (Rainbow Dash).

  14. Doubt it. Tom was a huge boulder picked up in some episode during the season 2 debut if i'm not mistaken. Didn't have much plot relevance either.

Though it'd be hilarious if it was based off of that.

Sorry to reply again without an official source, but I remember Zap Apple saying they didn't want to use an official Hasbro MLP character for the protagonist, rather that they wanted a "blank slate" to work with.  Dat rock pun.

You hit it right on the nose with Tom's origin.  "He" appears in the first episode of Season 2; Rarity is hypnotized by Discord into believing that a giant boulder is a huge diamond, which she proceeds to carry around and call Tom.

One thing i disliked was how they renamed the characters. I mean I get that Hasbro asked them to change the original names because of legal reasons but the alternatives just.. don't click with me. They could have done better.

Yeah, I thought the new names were a little strange, too.  To be fair, though, they probably were under pressure to release the new names as fast as possible after Hasbro's letter hit the net.  If it makes you feel any better, Zap Apple pretty much said that you can mod the names back in; they had to hint around to avoid getting into trouble again.  I'm sure someone will have the edited files available a few days after the release.

    EDIT: Confirmation of name modding

  15. Definitely prefer VNs on PCs.  I've never really liked tablets, and feel that they're overpriced for what they offer.  I will never buy one, but I'll use one if I have to, at least if they aren't iPads.  I decided that the last Apple product I'm going to use will be my new iPod Touch, which was a gift.  I don't like Apple's business practices, the quality of their products for the price, or the way the newer OSs are heading.  [/rant]

Anyway, I don't like letting people see what I'm doing on a computer, even if it's not embarrassing.  I'm a rather private person, at least in real life with people I don't know.  Getting a tablet would be weird for me.

  16.

I really hope it has voice acting. It seemed like that voice was just for the trailer. But i'm keeping my hopes up.

If they do voice acting it'd be really amazing and I'll probably enjoy it 10 times more.

There also might be an 18+ version at some point. They didn't fully deny it

It's actually confirmed that there will be an 18+ version.  It used to say that it their FAQ, but I guess they just wanted to sound more professional and cite the primary release's rating.  I've been following Starswirl Academy for a while, and before they changed they FAQ it said that the secondary release would be the 18+ version.

EDIT: Here we go, Zap Apple DID change their FAQ, but according to this question, I don't think that their plans for an 18+ version have changed.

  17. I'm pretty excited about this.  I saw it a while ago while browsing a MLP subsite, and I followed them on Tumblr ever since.  There's gonna be a SFW and NSFW version, so that'll make everyone happy.  I played the demo, and while the actual character designs are a bit...well...derpy...it's still worth the time to try it out.  The demo's save system didn't work AT ALL when I tried it out, so unless they patched it, you're gonna have to complete it in one go.

@FruitsPunchSamurai: Unfortunately, there won't be any voice acting.  They said, at least I remember them saying, that all they were going to do with voices was put them in the trailer.  If you have any other questions, check out the Starswirl Academy FAQ and follow them on Tumblr.

  18. Hey Fuwa, it's Zeno again, if anyone here remembers me.  I'm not dead yet, even though that would be a logical conclusion of why I stopped posting.  I stupidly upgraded my Mac's OS to Mavericks without saving a copy of my current computer to Time Machine just in case I didn't like Mavericks, and sadly, my current version of Parallels stopped working because of it.  I'm now unable to play PC VNs, or even access my files from my Parallels application.

So, for right now, I can only play VNs on my Mac.  I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.  The few VNs I've played through fully so far are Katawa Shoujo and Fate/Stay Night (on Parallels  :/ ).  I'd prefer eroge VNs, but as long as it has a good story with feels (preferably not too depressing, I don't like to get depressed because when I do I don't leave the house lol), it doesn't have to have 18+ content.  I prefer male x female, with the male as the protagonist.  And, as you can tell, I kinda need them to be in English, as I can't understand any other languages at a basic level.

Thanks again for looking at my thread.  If you actually remember me (that'll be a surprise), feel free to say hello even if you don't have a suggestion.

  19. I have several! ^_^

"The night is darkest just before the dawn. And I promise you, the dawn is coming." -Harvey Dent (The Dark Knight)

"Listen Simon... Don't forget. Believe in yourself. Not in the you who believes in me. Not the me who believes in you. Believe in the you who believes in yourself." -Kamina (Gurren Lagann)

"You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life." -Winston Churchill

"Men are not prisoners of fate, but only prisoners of their own minds." -Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Of course, this list wouldn't be complete without the quote rant from my signature:

“When life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons, what the hell am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man who’s gonna burn your house down! With the lemons! I’m gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!” -Cave Johnson (Portal 2)
