  1. Thought I might as well make a thread about this.  As a gamer, I've played a lot of games, and I've become very attached to several of them, not only because of the gameplay, but because of the world that's created in the game.  I love feeling immersed in the setting when I'm reading a book or playing a game, and these games did just that.  If there are any VNs/eroges that are similar in setting and complexity (only one gameplay similarity I'm looking for, I'll explain later), I'd greatly appreciate being told about them.  Searching blindly on the internet doesn't usually work for me  :/  As a note, I prefer games with H-scenes, but if it's good enough, I'll play it even if it doesn't have any 18+ content.

    Settings/Themes Similar to:

Fallout 3 (post-apocalyptic nuclear wasteland, dreary and gritty scenery, degeneration of society)  I've only really heard of one VN similar to this, Swan Song, but it's a little too rape-y for me to handle.  I can deal with a few rape scenes, but I'd prefer them to be implied if they're there at all.  If you've never played/seen Fallout 3, you can use the book The Road as an example of what I'm looking for.

Mass Effect trilogy (science fiction, multiple alien races, moral choices, shades of gray morality)  Pretty much anything like any of the games.  I especially love all of the details they have in the Codex; it really helps immerse you and make you feel that the world you're in exists.

Dragon Age: Origins (fantasy, strategy, adventuring in party of characters, multiple races, moral decisions) The strategy part is optional, I just like the sense of immersion BioWare games give their players, and DA:O was a very good example of it.  Like Mass Effect, it has a Codex with a lot of info about the world and a lot of lore.

Bioshock (false utopia, horror, mutants, government abuse of power, degeneration of society, moral decisions) Just to be clear, when I say horror, I don't mean huge amounts of gore and really disgusting death scenes, I mean the everything-is-quiet-so-I'm-safe-HOLY-FUCK-THAT-HUGE-THING-IS-COMING-AT-ME horror with creepy music and semi-disturbing characters that are quite possibly insane.  Doesn't have to be underwater, I don't really care about that.  If at all possible, I'd like to avoid the horribly gory VNs, as I have a very weak stomach, and don't particularly want to have to go running for the bathroom while reading a VN.

Those are all the settings I can think of right now.  I'll add more later if I think of them.

    Gameplay Similar to:

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (fantasy, turn-based combat with parties, strategy, multiple classes, multiple races, insanely hard boss fights)  I love this game.  I played it so much as a kid.  If anyone has any VNs similar to it, I will love you forever and ever.  Just to be clear, I'm not talking about RTS games.  I'm hilariously bad at those.

Thanks for checking this thread out, and if you posted any suggestions, you are amazing and have earned my eternal gratitude.

EDIT: Forgot to include a list of the VNs I've already played.  Fate/stay night is the only one that fits into the category.

VNs I already have downloaded and are on my to-do list:

    •Cross Channel  •Grisaia no Kajitsu  •Tsukihime  •Kagetsu Tohya  •Kamidori Alchemy Meister  •Kanon  •Muv-Luv  •Muv-Luv Alternative  •Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo  •Tomoyo After

  2. With all this talk, I guess it's time for me to start Grisaia then.

20 minutes into the game and I'm already in love with Michiru.

Everyone seems to like her route the least.  Not really sure why.  I mean, she's pretty stupid, but she actually does care about people, and seeing how she acts while she's bleaching her hair is priceless!

  3. What's up with all the new people playing Grisaia? Not complaining, but.. was kinda sudden.

I don't know about everyone else, but I've had it downloaded for about a month.  I was finishing up Hoshimemo before I started on Grisaia.  Must be a coincidence, since I know I'm not cool enough to get this many imitators.

  4. Change of plans instead of DanganRonpa i'm going to be playing Boob Wars 2. Just felt like it xD

Gee, I wonder what audience that game targets  xD

No that sounds about right. The common route is extremely long and there's not much of a overarching plot in Grisaia outside of Amane/Makina's route. Grisaia is really mostly about the cast.

Oh, good.  I heard that the common route was long; Hosimemo's was, too, but at least there was almost always something happening.  Oh well, I'll keep on truckin'.  I managed to read The Lord of the Rings trilogy.  I can read this.

  5. I'm finding it pretty hard to get into Grisaia no Kajitsu.  It's not bad, but nothing really interesting has happened yet.  I though that there would be some kind of hook by now, but I guess it's a little farther ahead.  Anyone else have that experience, or am I just impatient?

  6. I only know of Shuffle! and Katawa Shoujo, uncensored genitalia is illegal in japan from what i know.

Yep, I was gonna recommend Katawa Shoujo.

Yukiru is also right about uncensored genitalia.  I quote from Wikipedia, "In Japan, under Article 175 of the Criminal Code of Japan people who sell or distribute obscene materials can be punished by fines or imprisonment. Article 175 was included in the original document in 1907 and remains relatively unchanged."  They can only get around Article 175 by censoring the participants' genitalia, regardless if said genitalia is real or digital.  It's probably impossible to find uncensored versions of the standard VNs, since they would have had to have been re-released specifically for the U.S., or have had the H-scenes edited by third party sources, which is illegal (I think, since I don't see why they wouldn't copyright their material).

Try looking for VNs made outside of Japan.  That's all I can say.

  7. On Kosame's route on Hoshizora, liking it so far! Yet I still can't help it but wonder what happens if you pick the choices for all the girls - a bad end, I'd hope? Gotta try it when I'm less lazy, skipping through the common route is a pain. :D

Also decided I'd finally give some nukige a chance, since I don't trust them at all (I generally dislike h-scenes), and Kyonyuu Fantasy seems like it could do the job. I do love kyonyuu heroines, so it might not be as bad.

Nope, no bad ends at all.  You's gonna end up happy no matter what you do.

  8. Oddly enough, I remember getting into VNs the same way, cause my friend recommended those as a starting point for VNs.

That's a big coincidence.  I just found Katawa Shoujo on the internet while I was screwing around, then joined Fuwanovel after that.  Tay recommended Fate/stay night to me; I'd never heard of it before, so I wouldn't have downloaded it otherwise.  I don't have any friends that play VNs, so it was great to find this site.

  9. Finished my first playthrough/route on swan song ...

    My good it's depressing.

Working on the walkthrough and a review.

I think if a post-apocalyptic VN isn't depressing then they're doing something wrong...I mean, post-apocalyptic stories are supposed to deal with the deterioration of human society, and that's never a funny topic.

  10. So, I'm just starting Grisaia, and I'm not quite sure which route to do after Amane's, since there isn't a forced route order or unofficially forced route order through plot.  I'm not used to VNs without a route order  :/

Anyone have any suggestions for which order I should do them in?  I'm planning on doing the good and bad endings for each heroine during back to back, so you don't have to consider that.

  11. Sorry for the late post, but yes, I'd be very interested in your game  :3  I've a fan of roguelikes and rogue-lites.  I played The Binding of Isaac for a long time; I got to Isaac (boss) before getting extremely frustrated and ragequitting for a while.  I've also played Rogue Legacy, FTL: Faster Than Light (yet another game that made me curse the heavens in rage), and Don't Starve, and I want to get Risk of Rain sometime in the future.  Sorry if you've already answered this before, but will it be a traditional roguelike, where any progress you've completed in the past will have no effect on future games (e.g. no unlocks or anything), or will it be more of a rogue-lite (like Rogue Legacy, you unlock new content and even though permadeath is present, you can still progress afterwards)?  Just wondering.

I'd be interested in playing the alpha.  Will I be able to run it on my Mac, or should I run it on Parallels Windows 7?

  12. i seen that lag.

was funny i wasnt affected and so was another teammate of mine.

rest of us dced thought and so did the entire enemy team.

so we kinda abused the lag.

Yeah...it would've been a lot funnier if I hadn't been playing ranked.  Like in ARAM, for example, I would've been laughing my ass off.

  13. Sooooo bad.  Worst lag I've ever seen in my entire time playing LoL.  I got disconnected at least 15 times, around 30-40 seconds each time, and I constantly got periods of lag where I couldn't move or cast spells, along with general lag that screwed up my CS.  Really wished that I hadn't been playing Ranked right then.

  14. Not gonna lie Grisaia was all Amane's route for me. Best bad ending too.

Coincidentally, she was the girl that I was gonna go for first  :3  My only complaint about her so far is that her breasts are a little too big, in my opinion.  Love her personality.  Sass is always fun.

  15. That's the point. Letting go of the past is one of the two main themes in Hoshimemo; the other would be "cruel kindness". I suppose you could say the secret route kind of muddies the "leave the past behind" message a bit in favor of the second one. However, it's more the girl's realization than You's attitude that leads to conflict resolution in the route, so it's at least not completely invalidated :s

Good point.  Still, I find it hard to like her character, even though I know nothing about her.  I guess I'm projecting my dislike of You's stupid obsession onto her, too, but still.  I dun like her.

Starting Grisaia no Kajitsu.  Hope it lives up to all the hype I've heard about it.
