When LeBron James used 3rd person to describe himself people didn't think him weird, people thought he was an arrogant dick. Some psychologists link the usage of 3rd person with narcissism. Other psychologists counter with the example of Pakistan victim Malala, who they say is definitely not a narcissist. They claim it's used as a coping mechanism to help keep emotionally distant from problems. 3rd person isn't just viewed as weird, the connotations run deep and it's very complicated and confusing. It can invoke some strong, negative feelings though. EDIT: Interestingly, this debate was a huge thing back in 2005, when Pokemon XD came out. The protagonist's little sister is hated by a far majority of the fanbase til this very day for the very reason of refering to herself in conversation. Goooooood. In Japanese it's used to emphasize a character's childish nature, so obviously the two don't match.
