  1. I wont lie, I'm looking forward to it - I've liked all the mini stories they've been bleeding out of us - so I'm alright with seeing how they do with a new take/cast.

But....it'd be nice to actually have the original trilogy finish up before hand, you know? :sachi: Still haven't read the second one, as I'm waiting on the +18 release (even though I've had it sitting in my steam library for months now)

  2. Pretty much of the same opinion as Okarin.

I feel it's a valid expression esp. for objective matters - a good example would be some circumstances I'm dealing with - many like to think they know what I'm going through, and how easy/hard it is - based on assumptions alone, etc. But unless you are going through it first-hand, all your doing is talking out of your ass - even if it's with good intentions (bless my parents, they mean well - but they're the sort i'm most tempted to say "you just don't get it". and not in a polite way, heh) Basically, it's a line of thought where it's a clear difference between experience and ignorance. You can never know what it's like to give birth, unless you've actually done so, etc. (odd example, but apt.)

As for matters of taste, well - you can try to explain why you like "X" to someone that doesn't like "X" - and sometimes a middleground can be reached, but it's dependent on why both parties like/dislike "X".

Example - I really cannot stomach rape or torture in VNs (so things like Maggotbaits, Euphoria, etc) - primarily because I'm close to someone that suffered a dark and grisly hell earlier in their life. So, I just cannot fathom taking any kind of pleasure from reading portrayals of that kind of suffering - even though it's obviously "not real".

But, that being said - it's purely based on my bond with the one involved. Someone that doesn't know the person - and cannot associate with such a dark subject in terms of "real life" will more easily just take it for the story it is.  (take my enjoyment of standing off against the cops in the GTA series - the carnage is cathartic - but if I had been a victim/or knew a victim of some massive shooting in recent history, I suspect I'd be harder pressed to find enjoyment in it. Ultimately taste is a subjective matter.

Anyway, that's my thoughts on "You just don't get it". Note: I volunteered those examples, but I would be grateful if no one derails the thread by focusing on the exact content in the examples themselves. Instead, stay on the topic of objectivity vs subjectivity. Thanks :sachi:

  3. Huge Innocent Sin spoiler below.

    Spoiler

One of the most cruel - and cunning - villains I ever faced in a game. Nyarlathotep. He made Innocent Sin (undub/uncut version) a real experience for me :sachi:  Probably the only one to have ever actually "won" at the end of a story.

The game hasn't aged well, but still left a memorable impression on me~

I finished Bakemonogatari, and it was mind-numbingly good. Immediately picked up Nisemonogatari, which I'm taking my time with.

In the meantime, a week or two ago, on a day when my brain was absolutely fried and I was completely incapable of doing anything requiring thought but still needed to burn a few hours before going to sleep, a friend suggested I watch something cute and mindless, so I picked up Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya. I finished the first season last night. Not bad, though the loli fanservice felt pretty skeevy at times. I was again reminded that Taiga is the most underappreciated character in the Nasuverse (and Rin is fantastic, of course, but everybody knows that). My favorite part was the very first ~three minutes of the show, where it showed Illya leading a normal, happy life, which is pretty hard-hitting if your most recent recollection of her is the Heavens Feel F/SN true ending, and if you're a feels sucker like me. The rest of the show was fine, and definitely had its moments, especially when Rin took center stage. I'll probably pick up the later seasons and keep feeling skeevy about watching it.

I really liked the Saber Alter fight, but beyond that I can't watch anything past the first season - just way too skeevy for me. (And that's coming from a huge Fate fan and slight loli affectiendo) :makina:

Be curious to read your thoughts when you get around to the rest - I've refused to even look in it's direction, but maybe a sound mind can convince me otherwise. :sachi:

  5. Lol, that clickbait title~ :illya:

Both sides on the extreme are fairly suspect - on one side, the typical SP hater I see is ignorant and usually misunderstands, and completely makes up/assumes things. The sort that will twist everything into something negative, somehow - even in the rare case it's not justifiable. It's like how people harped on SP for Grisaia (which I backed with heavy bag of $, so it's not like I have nothing to do with it), there's been so much utter ignorance and stupid on the net when it comes to why/how things are with those releases. Try to explain to these people that FW is jerking every company they work with around (like MG) and the person wlll be "nope, SP is just bad" with their hands over their ears~

And on the other side, you have the major defenders, that clearly have their lips wrapped around the proverbial c***, that will defend without any kind of middle-ground or consideration, for any criticism levied against SP. "SP can do no wrong" they mutter to themselves, while twitching slightly) :sachi: The sort that wear their bias on their sleeves and say "yup, I'm a shill". Kind of hard to take your opinion seriously when it's clear as day you have ulterior motives. (looking at you, shill - many may not see it - but I know what you are - wonder when that "that thing" will be announced? sure won't be a surprise to me.:makina:

  6. Ignoring the posts and drama in the thread - my personal stance is that any success that has been garnered, is fooling newer members/consumers of the genre. if low-budget indie-dev-working-from-their-house type short-stories are your thing, then I guess it's a success sure. :makina:

EDIT: i should clarify: "where" the dev works their magic doesn't matter so much, but it's about how professionally they are approaching the matter, and how high they are willing to reach.

Until something really wows me, and shows the true potential of the "new" scene, I'll stay a member of the old guard.

  7. Spoilers below:

    Spoiler

I loved this game so much - until they broke the actual "4th wall" - I sometimes wonder how I would have viewed this story if they had kept it vague - hinting at it, but not actually letting the player know about the false reality? Take the story in a different direction, contained within the eternal sphere itself~ ( I guess it would have been something similar to SO4? eeeewww)

Ah well, beside the annoying plot twist, still a great game - it's what made me dig up the one that came before it - Star ocean 2 - and man that one did not disappoint on any level at all.

It seems like the opinion is pretty divided between these two titles, I'd really like to play both if I have time... I think I'll go with Tokyo Babel since I like biblical mythology more than Japanese.

@Suzu Fanatic I kinda expected that Deus Ex Machina is unavoidable, but the fewer that is, the better. That's why I really dislike some major shounen manga, where almost every battle must end in deus ex machina in some ways. Also, which flaws were you referring to for Tokyo Babel?

Was more just trolling Zaka :sachi: Though I do have a dislike for the stylistic choices made by the editor and translator for Tokyo Babel - but that's a matter of personal taste.

I did feel there was a fairly large disconnect between the characters though (within the initial concept writing) - the pacing felt off - like the whole thing was slightly rushed, and thus none of the characters really had "time" to grow on each other in a believable fashion. That aside, the mythology in Tokyo Babel was very well researched, and is used extensively throughout.

*Sigh* I guess that's where the time loop comes in. Five chapters and each is pretty much the same story with slight differences and a glorified mass suicide at the end. And all that with super cutesy moe art. Great!

Why can't Japanese VN writers simply accept death and go on without silly returns?!

    Spoiler

One of the reasons I can't stand a lot of Key's stuff. ( at least when it comes to story direction)

  10. I'm pretty forgiving when it comes to (sopposedly) bad TLs, to the point I can completely ignore some of the flaws unless pointed out to me - but the TL in the screenshots (and all of Chapter 1) are pretty shameful for an official release.

And knowing how things typically go, they'll blame the fanbase for the low sales.

If they can't be bothered to offer a educated, professional translation (or at least written in proper English without spelling errors), I can't be bothered to invest money into it.

Spelling errors are kiddie level - zero fucks are given if they can't even bother with those.

  11. Having read all of Ayakashibito and all of Tokyo Babel I would definitely recommend Ayakashibito here. Tokyo Babel has quite a few infuriating flaws Ayakashibito does not suffer from.

    (:Kappa:@Zakamutt )

Jokes aside, it's the same author for both, so you can more or less expect a similar feel, even if the separate localization teams used different methods. But as for deus ex machina - there's no escaping that in most chuuni :makina:

For my personal standpoint, i found the relationships built in Ayakashibito much more personable, as a reader I grew much more invested in the cast. Plus all the lore behind Japanese mythology provides some cool insight on several occasions.

Thank you. Tokyo Babel looks really good. So I think I am going to try it neverthless. Ayakashibito looks interesting too. But before deciding can you tell me a little about the protagonist's personality? Is he like classic wimpy anime protagonist?

He's a "nice guy" but he doesn't mess around if someone seriously pisses him off. He's the sort to try and show mercy when possible, but I wouldn't call him a wimp. He's quick to make up his mind on matters, and acts quickly. A bit dense though at times and doesn't always read the mood very well.

Personally I liked him well enough - at least compared to alot of the typical anime protags.

true that, altough my personal opinion is that subara would have been better off if he was a little more like kanta from desert punk.
And by that i mean, I disliked subaru as a character and i truly wish he was not so dislikeable.
He was in more than one way the worst thing about the show, and in some ways also the best i just don't think the good about subaru made up for the bad. (not as a person but as a character)
Meanwhile kanta, well he is just as much of a dick, but in his case you just love to hate him. And that means there is no bad thing about his character despite well and truly hating him.

I hadn't heard of Desert Punk until now, I'll have to look it up. Though I did have a brief "love to hate" moment with Subaru - I took a guilty pleasure in his suffering in one of the lives (I'm not normally a vindictive person, but it was a "you reap what you sow" type feeling).
