Hoshizora no Memoria, I've heard so many good things about it and its rating is so high so I always thought I was missing something when I read it, but if I had to describe it the story and characters just feel like cotton candy: fluff with no real substance to it.

Haha once you put it that way that does sound pretty logical. What do you think makes a game a megahit then, if not its quality? (I'm just curious about ur opinion not trying to be passive aggressive) Sadly the only conclusion I can draw is that Rance's success was due to it starting the wave, and now that the wave is dying there won't be anything that can make a breakthrough in this genre in terms of both sales and raising the genre's overall popularity. That's bleak man :c

Evenicle was amazing though, just because Rance was the first of its genre doesn't automatically make it superior. There's so much character depth in each and every heroine in Evenicle, the combat is simplistic and yet satisfying and quick, the setting and world making is so fleshed out and wondrous, and the MC really grows on you even despite how simplistic his nature is. I do agree that Evenicle will never be nearly as popular or have as many sales, because most people today hold such a prejudiced view towards 18+ jrpgs (which is justified, many are just smut with no creativity or insightful content) that Evenicle will be a gem that's lost in a sea of garbage.

Rewrite was my first ever vn and I think I re-read every single route 8 times in total (don't judge me). I'm guessing I clocked about 700 hours in total on that game, way more than any other vn I've played. Another VN that I haven't re-read but understand completely that it is a fucking masterpiece is Dies Irae, like c'mon everything in that VN is top notch from cgs to character development to fight scenes. Another favorite of my mine is Majikoi, as you can probably tell from the pfp XD However Most might not agree with my last one, World End Economica (WEE) is an amazing trilogy that I feel is severely underrated. The economic jargon is explained through meaningful and interesting examples, the character development of the main cast might feel subtle to some but is honestly really well done, and the conflict and emotional attachment between members of the cast feel incredibly realistic. Cross Channel, the overall setting is so unique and the novel plays on philosophical and moral ideas all the way throughout while managing to not be overbearing. The protagonist is also not a generic placeholder and is alpha as fuck It also treads a dangerous line where it allows the reader to genuinely despise the MC for his actions and inner monologues whereas in most other vns the protagonist's thoughts and actions are usually relate-able and therefore likable, in my opinion I think Cross Channel treads this line really well, and that the payoff in the end is even greater because your opinion of Taichi changes throughout the novel rather than being constant all the way through.

Tbh the gameplay element of Re;lord was decent: simple but still maintains its unique charm. The writing is also unexpectedly good for a game of its nature (no offense), the characters are unique and well fleshed out, Ria (the fairy accompanying the protagonist) in particular seems very realistic without falling into any archetypes such as tsundere. The main thing about this game that kept it from being great was just how inconsistent the MC's actions were from one scene to the next. For example, from helping his enemy on numerous occasions because he felt bad for her incompetent boss to straight up raping her in the next scene because "dAd sAiD sO xD". I understand that this really wouldn't be an 18+ game (thus losing a lot of its audience) if the MC didn't have a motive/incentive for fucking girls but c'mon even I could shit up a better excuse than having an extreme case of a father-complex.

Wtf why has nobody said Dies Irae yet that shit is actually gorgeous just look at any cg from the game

I mean she isn't strictly a tsundere but... she's also the best girl from any vn ever (except maybe Kotori from Rewrite)
